I made a reservation and confirmed they had a high chair available. We were seated upstairs, which was perfect - corner table by the stairs with a couch! The whole menu sounded delicious, but it was really warm out so it was hard to decide what to get. I ended up with a chicken curry, my husband got a ramen, and a friend got another noodle dish. I ordered the Chaplin... it had no depth of flavor and the pork belly was chewy. The crispy wontons were kind of tasty I really enjoyed the sauce but the filling wasn't nothing to rave about. I wouldn't order again, I was pretty disappointed. I decided to try a new place and unfortunately I didn't strike gold. We had a large party for restaurant week lunch and I think everyone enjoyed the experience overall. Chaplin's is pretty consistent with their food and service whenever I go. I had the fried pork gyoza for my appetizer. I would recommend getting them steamed and not fried. I thought fried meant just pan fried for a crispy bottom, not deep fried. The deep frying definitely makes the gyoza a bit less flavorful. The only hiccup with the appetizers was that one person asked for vegetarian gyoza and found that one of her dumplings had meat in it. The kitchen was able to quickly make her a new dish of all vegetable gyoza to replace it. I had the chicken katsu curry for my entree. I would have preferred a thinner chicken cutlet but it was nicely breaded and cooked. The rice was also cooked well. I've never had kimchi with curry before but it was an interesting touch as it made the dish slightly spicy. The portion size was generous and I took the remaining third home for lunch. read more

Bringing in the New Year with the ladies! It has been a while since I have been here, definitely pre-pandemic, and what a treat to start the new year off right. Everything we feasted on was phenomenal: the tori karaage, fried wontons, and the chicken yakisoba. Chef's kiss. I washed it all down with a green tea shot and Tito's and cranberry. I needed a pick me up, was craving ramen and the reviews seemed promising so I came last night. The staff and service were amazing, and the bathroom was clean, which is why I gave this place 3 stars. The shrimp and chicken shumai were bland asf and while the sauce and mustard that it came with were good, it still didn't boost the flavor of the dumplings. I ordered the Chaplin's A.S.S hoping that it would be everything that the reviews said it was, but it too was underwhelming. Popped in for dinner on a Tuesday evening and the place was packed. Reservations are definitely recommended. Inside is cute and dimly lit There was thankfully a two top available with no wait. Our server/bartender, Andrew, was amazing. He was attentive, offered great suggestions and answers our questions. I got the Chaplin and it was so good. The broth had great flavor. The port was seasoned and cooked well and the noodles were yummy. I slurped up every last bit. Andrew recommended a delicious dessert that I can't remember the name of. Such a unique brunch! I've been to Chaplin's a few times but never for brunch and I'm happy I finally gave it a try. The ramen is always delicious and having unlimited Veuve makes it better. The Chaplin's A.S.S. is my favorite ramen dish! Our server, Aaryn was incredible! He was attentive, funny, and kind. He made sure our glasses were never empty. Food and service aside, I love the outdoor decor to really highlight the Veuve offering. I've always sat downstairs but I love the upstairs bar scene! My one suggestion is to expand the brunch menu. I can't believe I have not done my review of coming her meeting up with my friend for happy hour! We went here I believe it was June 2023 because it was around the time the summer Olympics were happening. This place is such a unique spot as the decor gives the early 30s/40s vibes which I absolutely love. I can tell there are regulars as they can up to the bar downstairs and ordered off the top do their head. I did like that there was a parking garage close by in walking distance and arrest parking is also available. My for and I opted to go upstairs at a small booth near the upstairs bar where our waiter/bartender was the bomb. Because it's been awhile since I came I can't remember any of the drinks we had that night but all were really great! The chicken ramen and the karrage was the star of the show! I visited DC Friday and made a reservation at this place the day before based on good reviews, it was also my 17th anniversary which was noted on open table and now I will tell you my experience with this place first time. I arrived 15min before my reservation and have no problem being seated and I asked for outdoor seating and it was fine. For Friday night this place seems to be normal busy, what I mean by that is there are plenty of reservations open to book, and plenty of tables open but also plenty of people dining. The inside of the place seems nice but looked small and doesn't seat that many people. Once we were sat down, we waited maybe about 8-10min before the server came to us for water and food. I already knew what we all wanted so I went ahead and order everything. The appetizers came out in about 10min which was fine, but this is where it started to go wrong with this place and my service. First the only two main dish that needs to come out after the appetizers was the actual ramen and chicken curry rice, let me tell you we sat there for 40min before the server named Tony come out and ask if we ever got our food, are you seriously asking me this questions right now? I said no and he went to check, I can tell you either the order didn't get out in or something happened, I can tell you he wasn't doing his job because if he had the food would had come out way before 40min. When the food finally came out he said sorry they were backed up, I know he was lying because it's not, other people came later already got their food. This is where I would rate the service at 1 star, the reason I still give this place a 2 stars is because the ramen is good, everything else is just meh and everyone agrees. The Chaplin buns, the bun are hard and dry not soft, seems old and rushed heating up. The chicken yakisoba is using the wrong noodle, it was too soft and too sweet, it's not the correct yakisoba. The fried chicken is probably the most edible appetizer out there that taste decent. The ramen is about the only main dish that is why people come to this place to eat, the noodle is fresh, broth is good. The chicken katsu curry tasted too sweet, the chicken wasn't cut into the correct portion. I am not sure why so many things went wrong, it is the first time I came down here and in DC and this was the first place I picked for my family and it turned out to be a disappointment. People there doesn't seems to happy working there and seems to be putting up a fake smile, also when I received my check the server told me the 20% tip was already added to my poor service and no where said that it would. This place I would not come back and not recommend, being a foodie and eaten many places all over the world, this place is just not it. read more

All great in their own way and I feel like I drank them in the perfect order: The cure was delicious, fruity and refreshing The vagabond was gin based and citrusy And the woman of Paris was the perfect strong sipper to end the rest of my night For food, I had done some research and already knew I wanted the Tan Tan ramen and when it arrived, I know I got the right choice. It was flavorful, delicious and more importantly. WARM. I got this and added 2 eggs (insane during this egg-flation, but a girl was hungry) and a bunch of pork belly. It was perfect for the lowkey and cozy evening I was hoping for. Perfect visit to Chaplin's! I really enjoyed my ramen and most importantly the drinks. Third, and most importantly, the food and drinks were all delicious. I love the creativity of the menu and performative aspect of certain dishes - from freshly burnt rosemary (burned at the table) for "The Cure" cocktail (which was delicious) to the Pay Day injected dumplings (for the whiskey lovers out there). Chaplin's has been my favorite spot for Ramen for quite some time. I love the simplistic decor and dark ambiance; makes the experience feel relaxed and like a lowkey endeavor (right up my alley). I typically get the Chaplin A.S.S. (Phenomenal) but I decided to venture off on this visit. Per the recommendation of my waiter, I ordered the Mappo Maze...and MAN, was this good. I thought the reduced broth would decrease its appeal, but it was just enough. The flavors packed in this bowl were high and extremely balanced. The ground pork was delicious and the tofu tasted like it was soaked in a marinade beforehand. I decided to add corn and bok choy because I just have to have them in any ramen bowl. Also included was the obligatory spice bomb (Chaplin's has the best/spiciest I've tried. 10/10) and a Sapporo on the side . With that said: I may have a new favorite dish at Chaplin's. Pork and shrimp gyoza - 5/10 decent but the sauce they were paired with was a little too bitter to me. Nothing to write home about but the pork was better than the shrimp to me. Pork buta - 5/10 - very chewy and dry Crab wontons - 5/10 filling seemed to be mostly cheese Drink - the kid - 5/10 - it was strong but it wasn't tasty if that makes sense. The overall the experience was lackluster. The wakame salad was excellent, however both of our ramens were served with lukewarm broth, and the noodles had no springiness or flavor.
