I went to Chaplin's for DC Restaurant Week and, as usual, it did not disappoint. I started with the fried wontons, which were really good and a perfect appetizer to kick things off. For my entrée, I got the Chaplin ASS ramen, which I've had plenty of times at this point and is still my go-to. It's easily my favorite ramen on the menu. I probably should branch out and try something new one of these days, but honestly, it's hard not to order it when it hits every single time. The atmosphere here is always a vibe. I sat at the bar, and the bartenders were attentive, funny, and genuinely engaging, which made the experience even better. Drinks came out quickly, service was smooth, and the energy of the space just works whether you're there solo or with friends. Chaplin's is one of those places where you really can't go wrong. Great food, great service, great atmosphere. It continues to be a reliable favorite, and I'll definitely keep coming back. read more

Wasn't expecting much for ramen in DC because I've had my fair share of bomb ramen in the Bay. But this place took me by surprise! I hate to give Chaplin's this low of a score. I love this place, always fun and normally great service and pretty good ramen. It is my second favorite place for ramen in the city and I have so many good memories here! We came in for HH and I legitimately got sick from 1/4 of a drink there. I am glad that I had a friend with me and could drink water to be better. Their tea that their bar manager made with the brown sugar that they used for their hot drink saved me and was the redeeming choice from the bar. The vegetable gyoza are so good and I liked how they had options to have either pan friend or deep fried. The menu was clearly labeled for dietary restrictions and I love that. Honestly the service was beyond unacceptable. The bartenders were openly drinking with the servers and we felt that all of the staff was drunk. In the few hours we were there they had at least four heavy double shots that everyone took, including who we thought to be the GM or some management. I love this place and want them to succeed, but the glassy eyes, slurring words, and inability for the staff to handle orders or properly ring in receipts makes me question if we will come back again anytime soon. We get bar culture, but being openly drunk before 7pm on a Saturday evening when you are pretty booked is pretty off putting. read more

I am happy to report that Chaplin's is an amazing restaurant service up delicious food with top notch staff. Thai restaurant has been on my radar for a while and finally made it over there to see if they belong in the coveted Michelin Guide. They definitely do with what I witness there during my visit. I definitely can recommend the pork Shumai and the Miso Ramen. Both were excellent and packed with flavor. They also have a strong cocktail program with many house created cocktails. I definitely enjoyed "The Cure" more than once on my recent visit. Highly recommended cocktail. The staff member behind the bar that was taking care of us was friendly and attentive. 2/15/25 Used OpenTable to reserve a table for our Valentine's Day dinner. The waiter was attentive especially after my date inquired about a good rum to drink and suggested the bartender choose. He ordered the Chicken Curry which was PHENOMENAL; brought back memories of the BEST curry I've ever had while visiting Cape Town, South Africa. I wanted to come back here strictly for the Tan Tan Men. This time I ordered it vegetarian w/a stamina egg. It was BLAND! I had to request spices to make it remotely to how I remembered it. I ate here last night. When I went to the restroom, another patron loudly banged on the door and attempted to fight me when I came out of the bathroom. This person was so drunk they could barely stand up. I told the manager about it. Instead of asking the person to leave, they continued to serve him more drinks while him and his party harassed other patrons. Next time I'll just deal with the problem personally. We had a great time hosting a birthday dinner on the upstairs floor, big party of 15 and the service was amazing. They did an amazing job staying on top of it and attending to all the people in our group, despite having another huge birthday group in the other room. I was very impressed! Our food and drink tasted really good as well. The server lit the rosemary stem in my drink on fire at the table to smoke out the aromatics which was fun to see. On my 25th birthday I came to Chaplin's with a group of 8 of my girlfriends, this was in 2022. We had pre-gamed and had plans after so we came with the intention to have a good time. Our service then was good (considering we were a large group), we were given a round of shots to celebrate. The atmosphere of the restaurant was loud and had great tunes playing. I had appetizers prior to coming at home, so I wasn't remarkably hungry. I remember the food being good but it was not the best ramen nor dumplings I had in my time in DC. I remember excusing service issues and timing due to the size of our group. This month I came to Chaplin's for my cousins birthday, it is now my second time being here. When I walked in with my sister we could barely get into the door because of a group of 30 at the already very small bar. There was no host or anyone to escort us to the table, and we waited for our party to text us where they were sat. We were sat upstairs at a round table with about 5-6 others, service was slow and I again was not satisfied with the food selections. The ramen I ordered was not as flavorful as I would expect the signature Chaplin's broth to taste. The dumplings I ordered were crispy, exactly how I like but the filling was overwhelmingly one vegetable so not as good as I would have liked. The lemonade I ordered tasted like straight sweetener and lemon, extremely sweet and bitter at the same time. Some of the other guests ordered NA cocktails that were on the menu, and sent them back because for the price they were offered at they were underwhelming. I had a better experience when I came with the intention to party, but the food still was underwhelming for the price. If you're looking for somewhere with a party like atmosphere and casual/slow service, this is the place for you. read more

A friend and I went here for dinner last night. The place is very cozy and quaint in the Shaw neighborhood. We had a reservation that we got pretty fast and the table was ready when we arrived. The reason I gave 4 instead of 5 is because the bartender seems like they didn't want to be bothered last night. I understand everyone has a bad or off day, which I am not taking that away, and I will probably come again for happy hour. We got there in the middle of happy hour, and we were seated upstairs at the bar area. For the cocktails, we ordered the A Day of Pleasure and Woman in Paris. We realized cocktails are literally the same ingredients minus one ingredient. They drinks were really strong and tasted more like an old fashioned without the smoke. We order the gyoza appetizer and the mazemen Ramen.. The dumplings were great, and the ramen was very flavorful. Overall we had a great time, it was a bit of noise but that was expected due to it being happy hour time. I can tell they are always filled because the food is really good. Will definitely plan to return in the future, maybe during the summer, to experience outdoor seating. read more

Daikaya has been my ramen go-to since it opened, however my friend and I wanted a more comfortable dining experience last Thursday. We hadn't been to Chaplin's for nearly 4 years so we decided to try it again. The restaurant was half empty at 7:30 pm, and it looked like it needed some maintenance. The overall the experience was lackluster. The wakame salad was excellent, however both of our ramens were served with lukewarm broth, and the noodles had no springiness or flavor. Service was very pleasant, but largely absent. We noticed a very drunk, very loud group at the bar on our way out. Will be sticking to Daikaya after all. read more

This is an overdue review but this was back around August when I went. It was getting late. I had a shift at a club next door and I was looking for something to eat before it happened. Chaplin's was on my search since it was up the street from where I was and I started to crave slurping down on some good ramen. Chaplin's was packed when I went. The time I went was during the dinner rush so I was kinda expecting to be in for a wait. That didn't really happen as I was immediately sat at the counter and I was able to freely place my order. The theme of Chaplin's is well, themed after Charlie Chaplin. For those whom don't know, he's a famous movie actor and perhaps one of the greatest silent movie stars of all time. This restaurant pays a homage to him and 1920's culture so I think it's an interesting choice for theme. For starters, I got the usual. If you've been reading any of my reviews now you know a good Gyoza is one of my favorite appetizers. This is no exception as I got the Pork Gyoza. It came out on a big plate, fried and maybe a bit deformed but looks don't matter here. There was a crunch in every bite and I could taste many flavors. The pork mixed with mushrooms, scallions, napa, garlic, ginger just had a nice combination biting into it. With dipping it into soy sauce, you really can't go wrong. I ordered the Chaplin ramen which was the common ramen dish that I kept seeing from pictures of this place so I had to try it out. The look is.. interesting but it's no different from Tonkotsu ramen. The black sesame paste gives the dish and interesting look in profile and in flavor. With toppings such as chashu, scallions, bean sprouts, an a stamina egg with the surrounding hearty Tonkotsu broth we know and love. Honestly the ramen did it's job and it covered my cravings for food at night. I think everything turned out to be really delicious but didn't feel like I got enough chashu. It was great and perhaps from the pictures it looks a bit plain but there's always a future trip for sure. The noodles were firm, chewy, just the way I wanted them. I guess I just wanted more. Next time I'd come back when it's not so busy rush time wise. I think that just leaves for another follow up review at some point right? read more

Chaplin's is such a cool spot and I really enjoyed my first visit. I had heard great things about their happy hour menu but didn't get a chance to try it this time. Still, the regular drink menu did not disappoint. I ordered "The Cure" which is a strawberry-flavored cocktail with smoked rosemary. It was so delicious and had the perfect balance of sweet and herbal notes. I was also curious about the "Snow Monkeys" which are their frozen drinks. Our waitress was kind enough to let me try both flavors and while they were fun and refreshing, I decided to stick with a classic drink on the rocks. The service throughout the night was kind and helpful without feeling rushed. For dinner, I ordered the Chaplin which is their traditional ramen. This was actually my first time ever trying ramen and I really liked it. The flavor was rich and comforting without being too heavy. I was dining with a group so we also shared appetizers across the table. The pork gyoza and fried wontons were both solid and full of flavor. Dined at Chaplin's when my family and I were visiting DC. Arrived at 4 PM with a reservation. We were seated immediately upstairs. Service was great, not overbearing, but I think they may have assumed that my family (not my real family, it's my HS best friend's family, and they are Caucasian) was not well-versed in Asian cuisine when we asked for recos because they described the food as if we've never eaten it. Not worth removing a star, we kind of laughed at it. Overall, service was fantastic. Food - we got gyoza, ramen, and mappo maze. All very, very, very flavourful and generous by big city standards. Vegan and Vegetarian options were plenty and people in my party were able to order without feeling left out. One somewhat of a con, depending on where you stand on this, is that they don't have togarashi. Instead, they had chili sauce, and it was extremely spicy. The person who ordered this enjoyed the level of spice, but it was no togarashi. Cute place, loved the neighborhood. It was very easy to find street parking on a Thursday around 5pm. I initially came for the cocktails, such a great variety and half price during happy hour. What I really underestimated was the food! I tried the chicken karage, wontons and we each tried a different ramen. I really enjoyed the Mazeman (less broth than ramen)! I tried the Mappo Maze which was really delicious and even better when I warmed up the leftovers the next day.
