After spending the afternoon with my friends in the area, we decided to try this place out for dinner. Everything started out good. We were sat down quickly since it wasnt crowded for a sunday evening. The servers were helpful with the menu. We ordered about 10 minutes into our visit. We ordered appetizers to include Taiwanese popcorn chicken, spicy wontons, and cucumber salad. We also ordered our meals, too. A beef lamen, pork soup dumplings, crab and pork soup dumplings, and I originally wanted the fried chicken curry lamen but he talked me against it due to spice level and I opted for the sake chicken, per his recommendation. The soup dumplings came out abt 15 min later at which I was told that the cucumber salad was sold out and asked if I wanted anything else. I passed since I had ordered the popcorn chicken already. My friend wasnt a fan of her pork soup dumplings and didnt finish them at all. She stated a severe lack of flavor. The crab/pork ones were a hit for the other friend. I cant eat pork nor beef, so I was still sitting and waiting for my popcorn chicken appetizer to hold me off a bit. About another 20 minutes passed then the beef lamen came out for one friend and then an order of the curry lamen. We were confused on if this was our actual order until he realized that he wrote down the wrong dish for me after I explained that he told me to get the sake chicken instead. He apoligized but by this point, I hadnt had food in roughly 6 hours, I was starving and asked to keep the wrong order, please. He refused and said he would get me the correct item because it's just in the back. Keep in mind that the spicy won tons were still missing and so was my popcorn chicken. About 10 minutes later, the spicy won tons finally made it and she enjoyed them more than her pork soup dumplings. Then the other server comes to tell me that there is more cucumber salad. Im not sure how we go from sold out to availability nearly an hour later but I still refused since I was ready for my main entree at this point. The other friend ended up ordering it instead. She said it was good. I didn't try out of frustration of how this experience was unfolding for me. My entree finally came out after another 15 or so minutes, which meant it acrually was NOT sitting in the back and ready. Im exhausted. Im starving. Ive sat here and watched my table eat while my orders were fumbled for some odd reason. The sake chicken was okay. Its really like katsu chicken with a ton of yum yum and eel sauce over a bed of rice. Best way to explain it. I probably would have enjoyed the original curry dish more. About another 10 minutes later, my popcorn chicken arrives, which beyond upset me because I asumed this order wasnt put in at this point. It had been over an hour! I gave it to my friend instead after trying one and not enjoying the flour-heavy taste. I'm not sure if this was an off night or what but I cant say that I will return just from the sheer time it took to get our orders! The Food Breakdown: Grandma's Style Pancake (4/5) - I was admittedly skeptical at first about the item, as the beef was presented wrap-style within the scallion pancake. However, it was actually a refreshing bite with a slight kick from the red pepper. It made for a filling starter. Pork Xiao Long Bao (5/5) - Very delicious and flavorful. There was a good amount of soup in each dumpling as well, properly wrapped so it was easy to pick up and add in the complimenting sauces. Steamed Vegetable Dumplings (4.5/5) - Unpictured, but I was pleasantly surprised by the seasoning in the veggies. This is such a cute place! My mom and wanted a quick bite to eat before a movie. And because it was so cold outside, dumplings and soup sounded perfect. And it was!! From the outside, Reren doesn't look like much. But once you go upstairs into the restaurant, it's very cute and sophisticated. The rib tips were of a sweet-n-sour nature and their gooey sticky sauce paired well with the traditional sticky rice served alongside. Despite the offputting conversation about reservations, my wife and I ate there before seeing Merry Wives at the Shakespeare Theater. My experience on arrival was inauspicious. I've tried their Chinatown location years ago, however maybe it's this location or my memory is wrong, but I thought the food was average/ok at most. We shared the taiwan style popcorn chicken and I got the dandan noodles and passion boba passion. The popcorn chicken was ok, slightly dry, could be crispier, and needed more flavor. The dandan noodles wasn't spicy or even slightly spicy, and lacked flavor. The drink was ok, but I wouldn't get it again. Have been to Reren in Chinatown but didn't know they also have a location in Georgetown. They other day just walked past and made an impromptu decisions to try it for lunch. The place is in a town house on 2nd floor. Well decorated very atmospheric, more spacious than the other one. Menu not extensive but their soup dumplings are very good - the skin a bit thick but there is so much juice inside the dumplings you absolutely need to use the ladle they give you to eat them or you'll lose all the juice. Also had dan dan noodle and wrapped sticky rice. All tasty and service is friendly and courteous. Seafood fried rice - plenty of properly cooked shrimp, bits of crab, and scallop. Great flavor without relying on soy sauce, though maybe just a little bit on the salty side. Still well liked. Taiwanese braised pork over rice - probably the favorite of the night, with tender pieces of pork, mushroom, pickled vegetables, bok choy, and half a tea egg. I came here for dinner because I had heard good things about it online. The restaurant was very small. It has only a few tables and a bar with a couple of barstools located by the front door. Despite how small it was I had no problem getting a table because it was pretty empty. Unfortunately the service was kind of disappointing. My server was nice but she didn't introduce herself, explain the menu, or even ask me if I had any allergies. She just asked what I wanted. I decided to try a few appetizers and then one of the ramen soups. For the appetizers I ordered the takoyaki, vegetable dumplings, and the crazy fish. I got the dumplings first. The wrapper for the dumplings wasn't a normal dumpling wrapper. It was green and made of a veggie substitute so it was steamed which made it kind of mushy and it fell apart when you tried to pick it up with chopsticks or a fork. The filling for the dumplings had no flavor. All of the flavor came from the dumpling sauce. Honestly I wasn't a fan of the dumplings but all of the other options for dumplings were pork which I don't eat so that was my only option which wasn't great. Next came the takoyaki. I thought this was pretty decent. While this wasn't the best I have ever had I did like that they didn't drown it in sauce like a lot of places do. After that came the crazy fish. This was also disappointing. The fish was a battered and fried white fish. It was cooked well and was nice and flakey. Unfortunately this also had no flavor. I thought that they would at least season the batter but they didn't. They sauteed onions and garlic and put it on top of the fish as a garnish. I didn't finish it. It was at this point that the service went downhill. I finally ordered the grilled chicken ramen but because they only had pork or veggie broth I asked for veggie broth as a substitute and I asked for no green onions. The server had repeated "veggie broth" and "no green onions" so I know she heard my requests. They ramen came out and it had veggie broth but they had put green onions in even though I had said not to. I was not convinced that the meat in my soup was chicken. The meat that was in there looked a lot like pork so I didn't eat it. The noodles and veggies were fine but once again the broth had no flavor. At this point I had no desire to stay so I paid and left to find food elsewhere. They may have other choices that are better but honestly I have no desire to find out.
