We were sat down quickly since it wasnt crowded for a sunday evening. The servers were helpful with the menu. We ordered about 10 minutes into our visit. We ordered appetizers to include Taiwanese popcorn chicken, spicy wontons, and cucumber salad. We also ordered our meals, too. A beef lamen, pork soup dumplings, crab and pork soup dumplings, and I originally wanted the fried chicken curry lamen but he talked me against it due to spice level and I opted for the sake chicken, per his recommendation. The soup dumplings came out abt 15 min later at which I was told that the cucumber salad was sold out and asked if I wanted anything else. I passed since I had ordered the popcorn chicken already. My friend wasnt a fan of her pork soup dumplings and didnt finish them at all. She stated a severe lack of flavor. The crab/pork ones were a hit for the other friend. I cant eat pork nor beef, so I was still sitting and waiting for my popcorn chicken appetizer to hold me off a bit. About another 20 minutes passed then the beef lamen came out for one friend and then an order of the curry lamen. We were confused on if this was our actual order until he realized that he wrote down the wrong dish for me after I explained that he told me to get the sake chicken instead. He apoligized but by this point, I hadnt had food in roughly 6 hours, I was starving and asked to keep the wrong order, please. He refused and said he would get me the correct item because it's just in the back. Keep in mind that the spicy won tons were still missing and so was my popcorn chicken. About 10 minutes later, the spicy won tons finally made it and she enjoyed them more than her pork soup dumplings. Then the other server comes to tell me that there is more cucumber salad. She said it was good. I didn't try out of frustration of how this experience was unfolding for me. My entree finally came out after another 15 or so minutes, which meant it acrually was NOT sitting in the back and ready. Im exhausted. Im starving. Ive sat here and watched my table eat while my orders were fumbled for some odd reason. The sake chicken was okay. Its really like katsu chicken with a ton of yum yum and eel sauce over a bed of rice. Best way to explain it. I probably would have enjoyed the original curry dish more. About another 10 minutes later, my popcorn chicken arrives, which beyond upset me because I asumed this order wasnt put in at this point. It had been over an hour! I gave it to my friend instead after trying one and not enjoying the flour-heavy taste. I'm not sure if this was an off night or what but I cant say that I will return just from the sheer time it took to get our orders! The Food Breakdown: Grandma's Style Pancake (4/5) - I was admittedly skeptical at first about the item, as the beef was presented wrap-style within the scallion pancake. However, it was actually a refreshing bite with a slight kick from the red pepper. It made for a filling starter. Pork Xiao Long Bao (5/5) - Very delicious and flavorful. There was a good amount of soup in each dumpling as well, properly wrapped so it was easy to pick up and add in the complimenting sauces. We shared the taiwan style popcorn chicken and I got the dandan noodles and passion boba passion. The popcorn chicken was ok, slightly dry, could be crispier, and needed more flavor. The dandan noodles wasn't spicy or even slightly spicy, and lacked flavor. The drink was ok, but I wouldn't get it again. Have been to Reren in Chinatown but didn't know they also have a location in Georgetown. They other day just walked past and made an impromptu decisions to try it for lunch. The place is in a town house on 2nd floor. Well decorated very atmospheric, more spacious than the other one. Menu not extensive but their soup dumplings are very good - the skin a bit thick but there is so much juice inside the dumplings you absolutely need to use the ladle they give you to eat them or you'll lose all the juice. Also had dan dan noodle and wrapped sticky rice. All tasty and service is friendly and courteous. Seafood fried rice - plenty of properly cooked shrimp, bits of crab, and scallop. Great flavor without relying on soy sauce, though maybe just a little bit on the salty side. Still well liked. Taiwanese braised pork over rice - probably the favorite of the night, with tender pieces of pork, mushroom, pickled vegetables, bok choy, and half a tea egg. Really excellent, but I would have preferred a jammier yolk. Service was friendly and food came out quickly. History of Present Indulgence: After a few hours of shopping in Georgetown, AKA leaving expensive stores empty-handed only to go to TJ-Maxx to get the real shopping done, and massively hungover, some food was a must. Physical Exam: Taste - The food here took me back to some of my mom's home-cooking, as well as casual spots I would hit up whenever I traveled back to Shanghai to visit my grandparents. They have dishes from different Chinese cuisines, like the spectacular Toothpick Cumjn Lamb and the Chengdu Spicy Wontons, as well as Taiwanese-style dishes, but it was the sweetness of the Braised Smoked Duck that made me feel nostalgic for home-cooking I haven't had in a long time. The cumin lamb and spicy wontons were yum yum for my tum tum, but could've been spicier. But I also am a very spicy eater. The signature lamen (ramen, but spelled closer to the Chinese pronunciation) was also a simple, but rich soup noodle noodle bowl that was exactly what I needed that day to nurse the hangover I was having. Soupy noodles = Liquid IV for Asians. Service - Our server was LOVELY. She was so nice, almost NPC character from a video game nice. Which is sad how surprising that was, because that means I don't usually expect niceness. I won't go too deep into an expectations of human kindness in a Yelp review though. Environment - The 3 of us were all very jazzed about how fun this place was decorated. It gave a fun bar vibe and I felt like there should be some TVs around and a karaoke machine setup somewhere. The bar was lined up with beer towers, so they must attract a clientele (not to stereotype but probably a significant amount of the Chinese students from Georgetown). I mean it makes sense. Great snackable food that goes well with drinks that they have plenty of (下酒菜 xia jiu cai in Chinese would literally translate to "down wine dishes"), a fully stacked bar, and good music in the background. Food as the vehicle for fun while drinking on a Friday night needs to be more imbued into mainstream culture here. Assessment/Plan: It's kind of a hidden, inconspicuous place on a side street off of M on the 2nd floor of a boba shop. But definitely look for it and go try it out. I'm definitely going back. 5 out of 5 stars for food, service, and atmosphere. Really curious what the vibes are at night and hope it gets as lit as it seems setup to be.
