Reren is pretty good! I went in with no expectations, but enjoyed my lunch when I went with my friend last week. I got the dan dan noodles and she got the ghost pepper chicken. The noodles had a nice flavor and as someone who LOVES dan dan noodles, I'd say these were quite tasty. I wish there was a bit more heat and spice (I did end up adding chili oil that they had on the table). But the broth was flavorful and the added toppings were a nice addition--though I personally didn't eat the egg or tomato. The chicken is labeled as spicy, but isn't very spicy. I had a disappointing experience at this restaurant that fell short of my expectations. The service was particularly subpar; I witnessed staff members harassing a couple of teenagers about leaving a tip, which was uncomfortable to watch. Personally, I wasn't inclined to leave a tip either given the situation. As for the food, the noodles were excessively thick, which is a characteristic of Lamen, but unfortunately, it didn't work in their favor this time. The broth lacked any depth of flavor, making the whole dish feel uninspired. The pork belly was another letdown; it was of noticeably low quality and did not taste fresh. I had high hopes for this meal, especially since my first-choice restaurant was closed for the holiday. However, the soup dumplings were arguably the worst I've ever had. They were tiny and had almost no flavor at all. To top it off, they were served in a metal tin instead of the traditional wooden steamer, which only added to the disappointment of the presentation. History of Present Indulgence: After a few hours of shopping in Georgetown, AKA leaving expensive stores empty-handed only to go to TJ-Maxx to get the real shopping done, and massively hungover, some food was a must. Physical Exam: Taste - The food here took me back to some of my mom's home-cooking, as well as casual spots I would hit up whenever I traveled back to Shanghai to visit my grandparents. They have dishes from different Chinese cuisines, like the spectacular Toothpick Cumjn Lamb and the Chengdu Spicy Wontons, as well as Taiwanese-style dishes, but it was the sweetness of the Braised Smoked Duck that made me feel nostalgic for home-cooking I haven't had in a long time. The cumin lamb and spicy wontons were yum yum for my tum tum, but could've been spicier. But I also am a very spicy eater. The signature lamen (ramen, but spelled closer to the Chinese pronunciation) was also a simple, but rich soup noodle noodle bowl that was exactly what I needed that day to nurse the hangover I was having. Soupy noodles = Liquid IV for Asians. Service - Our server was LOVELY. She was so nice, almost NPC character from a video game nice. Which is sad how surprising that was, because that means I don't usually expect niceness. I won't go too deep into an expectations of human kindness in a Yelp review though. Environment - The 3 of us were all very jazzed about how fun this place was decorated. It gave a fun bar vibe and I felt like there should be some TVs around and a karaoke machine setup somewhere. The bar was lined up with beer towers, so they must attract a clientele (not to stereotype but probably a significant amount of the Chinese students from Georgetown). I mean it makes sense. Great snackable food that goes well with drinks that they have plenty of (下酒菜 xia jiu cai in Chinese would literally translate to "down wine dishes"), a fully stacked bar, and good music in the background. Food as the vehicle for fun while drinking on a Friday night needs to be more imbued into mainstream culture here. Assessment/Plan: It's kind of a hidden, inconspicuous place on a side street off of M on the 2nd floor of a boba shop. But definitely look for it and go try it out. I'm definitely going back. 5 out of 5 stars for food, service, and atmosphere. Really curious what the vibes are at night and hope it gets as lit as it seems setup to be. Prefacing this review by saying that DC's Chinatown is not a real Chinatown - it's very gentrified and there are very few ethnic Chinese still left in the area. DC's overall Asian population is only impressive if you have lived in ultra white suburbs growing up. It does not remotely compare to LA/NYC/Chicago - or even Chinese immigrant communities you'll see in college towns. As a result of this lack of Chinese community, the Chinese food here leaves a lot to be desired. I ordered a lamen bowl and it was bland - I've had better in the food area in a Chinese grocery store. It wasn't well seasoned and the noodles were overcooked so the texture was off. The service was quick and the waiters were nice so I did appreciate that element. But overall, like most Chinese food in DC, I was less than impressed. If you've never had Chinese food (beyond the standard takeout lomein and fried rice), the food would probably impress you - but if you're actually Chinese, it's nothing impressive and not worth the cost. The restaurant is up a set of steps which can be confusing coming in but once you're there, you're transported to another world that has cozy nooks that look out over the street. We had the restaurant to ourselves and a cute bay window booth that overlooked the street below. The excitement stopped there as the service was deeply troubling. We ordered their Taiwanese popcorn chicken which was good, would recommend. Then we each ordered a lamen. Mine came out first and then by the time I finished eating mine, the other lamen came out. While I was eating, we had asked the staff to check on the other lamen and never received an appropriate response. The noodles for the lamen that came out late, probs because they forgot about it, had undercooked noodles that were hard. Overall, taste of the meal was alright, almost underwhelming. It's not really anything special. It's not super authentic, as seen by the bell peppers and sliced tomatoes addition. Came here for dinner with our party of 4 adults plus 1 child on March 26, 2024. The food was extremely underwhelming. We ordered a variety of menu items and they were mostly subpar. The better dishes we had were the spicy wontons and the friend fish filets. The shrimp fried rice, spicy beef lamen, and dan dan noodles were all below average at best. Reren in Georgetown focuses on small plates and lamen, unlike its Chinatown counterpart, which focuses on more authentic Chinese fair alongside lamen. This was my second visit, one which I enjoyed slightly more than the last one. Some friends and I just wanted a snack, rather than a full meal, and ordered the fries and Chengdu Spicy Wontons. I do not believe that fries should be served with any sauce on top of them; sauces should be served on the side to retain the crispness of the fries and to provide more autonomy over how much sauce to eat with each fry. Despite the fact that Reren topped their fries with sauce, the fries were pretty good; the wasabi mayo was a fun twist on a typical fry. The fries themselves were crispy and tasty; had we gotten takeout and eaten them just 10 minutes later, they likely would have been soggy but mercifully were not. This dish earned a 4/5. The Chengdu Spicy Wontons lived up to their name and were pretty good. The spice was more of a numbing heat than a burning heat, which I appreciated, and the filling was tasty as well. I would have appreciated more green onion or cilantro, but was a 4/5 dish nonetheless. The decor and ambiance in Reren are great. The seating, bar area, bay windows, and lighting fixtures make for an excellent environment; the waitstaff is efficient and were quick to refill our waters. Unique style of ramen in Chinatown. Their ramen is Chinese-style rather than Japanese, so it was definitely different than what I am used to. I loved the noodles - they were a nice thickness and chew and the portion size was huge. For the signature lamen, I liked the seasoning of the pork and found it to be nice and tender, but the shitake mushrooms had a bit of a vinegary taste and I didn't like how the bok choy was just an entire head of baby bok choy as it was a bit hard to eat. Ah Reren....I have so many mixed feelings about this place. It's one of the only Chinese noodle soup spots in Georgetown, so if you're really craving a classic(-ish) bowl of lamen, then Reren is a pretty solid stop. They have a diversity of toppings, including two vegetarian choices -- a buddha-style lamen soup and a spicy sesame cold noodle for the hot summer days. I've tried the buddha style lamen a couple of times and it's honestly just very...average. The shiitake broth isn't doing too much for me, and the carrots, peppers, and brussels sprouts were still crunchy, which is great in a stir fry but less ideal in noodle soups (at least for my taste). The tofu was also quite bland and seemed like it had just been plopped into the soup right before serving. As far as vegetarian noodle soups go, this one is definitely toward the bottom of my list. The green tea vegetable dumplings made a stronger showing, with their cute green dumpling skin and decently flavorful fillings. They seemed to be stuffed with bok choy, shiitake mushrooms, and a few other goodies that I couldn't quite identify. They were solid, but still nothing special and about at the level of the frozen vegetarian dumplings that I pick up at the grocery store (and, at $10 for only six dumplings, I'd much rather pick up the ones at the grocery store). I was, however, thoroughly impressed by their Not Your Mama's Tofu. As the name implies, this appetizer truly was nothing like what you would find in a traditional Chinese kitchen, but, wow, it was incredible. After being breaded and fried to perfection, the thick slices of tofu are coated in a sweet, savory, and umami sauce, and then finished with green onion and sesame seeds. I'm not sure if they added tapioca / corn / potato starch to the breading, but it doesn't taste like your standard wheat flour. It has a nice bit of crunch on the outside, but the rest of the breading has a springy, mochi-like texture, both of which contrast the perfectly soft tofu on the inside. It was definitely unlike any other tofu dish that I've tried before, and I would definitely recommend giving it a shot! read more

Personally, I think all of them were a bit salty that I had to drink water frequently in between bites. I would say spicy wonton wasn't spicy enough. I had better ones in VA, and again the meat inside was extremely salty. It felt flavors were just a little out of balance (missing sweetness?), but they give generous portion for noodles. Reren specializes in lamen. In fact, it's right on the front of the building as a spot for lamen and a bar. "What is lamen?" my partner asked looking equally confused... I did a quick Google search and read the wikipedia definition that it's "a magical pendant or breastplate worn around the neck so that it hangs upon the breast over the heart...." Hmm... sounds amazing. But probably not the right one! On further digging, I found another site that claims lamen is the Chinese word for noodles, and the Japanese also call it lamen. So the word is spoken with the L sound in both China and Japan (Taiwan, too), not the R sound. Well, mystery solved. Kind of.... Whatever, I was hungry so we went in! I can't tell you how many times I've walked past this place. I decided on a whim to check it out (and was notably hungy) and couldn't believe what I was missing. Located right in the heart of Georgetown in a gorgeous historic row home, I always thought this place was on the first level and a take out spot. But to my surprise, the first floor is a boba shop (which I also love!) but keep going up and the restaurant is on the second floor. We grabbed a spot right in the front next to the window, where we could look out over the street and all the action below. This isn't a fancy spot, but just an all around nice place with good Chinese-style ramen and Chinese dishes including our favorite, xiao long bao (or soup dumplings!). My partner and I were doing a vegan cleanse (we're from California, so I know!), so had to skip the dumplings this go around. But instead had their Buddha entre (with tofu, mushrooms, vegetable broth and rice). One thing to note, their online menu isn't the same that we got. So if you see something online it might not match the menu you get. On our next visit, when we aren't doing some trendy cleanse, we'll be definitely trying some of the dumpling and the restaurant's signature "Lamen" dish. It's also pretty cheap for other spots in Georgetown, so more money for shopping! read more

Holy moly this was hands down my favorite restaurant we stumbled upon in DC. Wifey and I just finished touring the Georgetown Waterfront and had a hankering for some good Asian food. We were debating sushi but saw that this place served Chinese and Japanese fusion. Service was quick and their staff was very kind. Their Dan Dan noodle is one of the best I've ever had and the food quality all in all was excellent. So happy we found this gem!!!! Ready to try something new, my honey and I decided on this place! There is a parking garage right across the street but it was about $12 for one hour and $22-$24 for anything over. Though I will say it was quite convenient as we got caught in a massive rain storm. Slim staircase going up, the restaurant is very chic! I loved the variety in colors, styles, and chairs.
