Hill East Burger was good. Great happy hour, good food, cute Tex Mex decor. I would visit again if I lived nearby, but I wouldn't make a special trip for it. I visited at 5 PM on a Monday, right after they opened. We got some burgers and fries. The Terlingua Burger ($13 for single patty) comes with cheese, beef chili, onion and yellow mustard. The chili didn't stay on the burger. It was basically beef with more beef. Tasty but not that interesting. The Lancaster ($12 single) had bacon, cheese, pickled onion, tomato relish, and arugula. It was a bit sweet with the tomato relish. Pretty good overall. Fries ($6) are "curly-ish" in a shape I've never seen before. I didn't think they would have the right balance of soft to crispy, but they were great. Happy hour includes a $2 tallboy beer which is impossible to beat anywhere in DC. The Montucky Cold Snap was a light lager, like you'd expect. The place is small, but cute. I like the two-person mini-booths and the Tex Mex decor. 20% auto-grat even thought it's not a full service restaurant. Our third time at Hill East burger for the Steeze pop up, and they crushed it once again! Get the Puebla burger, it's our favorite at Hill East so far. It's smoky and savory and flavorful, and the sauce has just the right level of tanginess. The Steeze Nashville hot nugs were properly hot, with a great batter and perfectly tender and juicy chicken. The Steeze burger was amazing as usual and we also enjoyed the curly fries and the Steeze dog. Chill vibes on a Friday night and great service. Love that they have a functional jukebox that fits the mood of the place. The place wasn't busy, so I grabbed a seat at the bar. The bartender gave me the menu, answered a quick question, and then let me take my time deciding. I went with the classic burger and added spicy mayo. It came out cooked perfectly, with a delicious bun that held everything together. I ordered the single, but honestly, I could see myself getting the double and being just as happy. It's less than 15 minutes from my home, so I'll definitely be back. Parking wasn't too bad either since the area is mostly apartments and houses, you don't have to fight through a crowded restaurant row. Great lowkey burger joint in Potomac Ave. I heard about the guest chef pop up with chef Kevin from Moon Rabbit and was so excited to try it! It did not disappoint. The crossover menu was limited but you could still order from the regular menu too. I got the beef burger which was sooo flavorful and rich. It had a really nice crunchy onion ring in the middle and was perfectly cooked and flavored. I also ordered the poutine fries that came with potato salad and all the fixins. I came here for the Capitol Jill Baking pop up called cake party! I looked at the menu before coming and it looked so good so I also got some snack with my cake. The chicken nugs were so delicious perfectly crisp and juicy. I wanted to try all the sauces so I got the flight. After leaving a meeting nearby, I decided to take my daughter out for a quick lunch date. She loves burgers so we decided to try out Hill East Burger. We were greeted right away and told we could sit anywhere and scan the QR code to order. I didn't mind that part because it made checkout much quicker. I ordered the single Lancaster burger, chicken nugs, and a kids burger and fries. The burger was smaller than I expected but I enjoyed it. I think all of the flavors worked well together. I also enjoyed the chicken nugs and the sweet chili dipping sauce on the side. My daughter ate all of her food, which is rare. There is a sign at the table that states there's a 20% service fee for all orders but I didn't notice until halfway through lunch. When it was time to pay, my $30 meal went up for $50 really quickly because of the fee and tip for the server. While the food was tasty, I don't feel like I got enough food or adequate service to justify the bill. read more

Catching up on Yelp reviews as I visited back in June. Hill East Burger was a cool place and it was small. I would recommend making a reservation during peak times. Once you are seated, you order through Toast and then they bring out the food to your table. Old fashioned was solid, but overly sweet. Fries were solid as they were super crispy. They had a great balance between crispy and potatoey. The sauces were good. Some were very vinegary tho. The Ok Burger is better than just ok (AT&T commercial). It's not a smash burger, which is a breathe of fresh air. Bun was a little tough and maybe a tad stale. This was the worst part of the burger, but it has potential. Though the rest of the burger made up for it. The patty had no seasoning besides salt n pepper on the patty, which is how you make a good burger. Toppings were insanely good. Pickle had a nice crunch. Cheese was off the charts. Sauce was very good. Service was solid and I didn't think price was overly expensive, especially since it's D.C. This might just be my new favorite burger in DC. I had the OK Burger, and it's smash-burger style, a little on the salty side but much less greasy than my current favorite burgers (Salt Line or Le Dip). Super flavorful and the onion ring gives a good crunch. The bun is perfection, super soft but with a good toast so it holds up to the patty. And the curly fries were awesome- it's impressive to have that level of crispiness on a curly fry, I imagine they do a vinegar boil plus double fry. It's awesome. Plus the vibe in here is great, cozy and you don't feel rushed. They use Toast ordering which makes it great for groups as each person can order and pay for their own food. They always host the best pop-ups - from Marcelle's Shababi brunches to Capitol Jill Baking's sourdough mash-ups. The food jut never disappoints here and they use quality ingredients. Came here around 530pm with a friend and my dad when they were doing a Rueben special. It's a small place inside, but they do have seating outside which is where we sat. You order everything via QR code and they bring it to you. The gentleman who waited on us was very friendly and during happy hour they had a miller high life for a dollar?!? You get the crispy edges, but there's just a little bit of thiccness in the center with a lot of juice. We came here for my boyfriend's birthday dinner and it was such a great experience. The chicken nugs were fried to perfection and I was a big fan of the fries. We tried all the sauces and my favorite was definitely the trademark sauce- couldn't tell you what's in it but boy was it DELICIOUS! We all had either the 'ok' burger, the dodge city, or the Lancaster- by far the 'ok' burger was our favorite. Listen to the recommendation of doing a double!!!! We were a little nervous about a new restaurant's operation and logistics, but we were blown away on our date night here! Immediately we were seated (no reservations needed as stated from the restaurant) at a cozy booth. We loved the vibe and interior decor. I think Hill East Burger did a wonderful job with renovations, mixing in a southwest and modern vibe that felt welcoming and relaxing. We ordered drinks (lemonade bourbon & draft beer), chicken nugs, curly fries and two burgers (Lancaster and the OK). Everything came out piping hot and absolutely delicious. The chicken nugs were fried to perfection- the fact that you did not need to use their condiments shows how amazing the breading was. The burgers were out-of-this world and are the new contenders to Lucky Buns. I think at one point, I rolled my eyes with approval when I ate my burger. I love that the prices are just right; servers were welcoming and made sure you were acknowledged (since we don't technically have to tip them during this post-initiative 82- but we do have to pay a 20% gratitude cost anyway to help the staff's pay); it got crowded by 7pm on a Saturday nights but the tables turned quickly for the next customer; and it's a great place for solo diners at the bar, too. Here's our experience. 1) Food: The brainchild of BBQ Sloppy Mama's and Tex Mex Republic Cantina, the menu combines BBQ with Tex Mex. On the menu are three burgers that come with 1-3 patties, three non-burger sandwiches, chili, sides, a salad, and chicken or veggie nuggets. Burgers come on a potato bun or a bed of salad. My wife ordered the OK Burger on salad and i the Lancaster. We loved both- full flavor and unique. Our five-year-old daughter ordered chicken nuggets. She had her choice of five different sauces on the menu. 2) Drinks: They sell cocktails, beer, wine, and sodas. My wife got the housemade ginger chipotle soda with rum and me the orange oregano soda with tequila. Both were very unique and refreshing. 3) Price: Prices are comparable to the D.C. market. Burgers are $12-$18 depending on how many patties you order. Cocktails are $13 with sodas being $4. 4) Service: Scan the QR code on the table and order and pay online. A 20% is already included on the bill to help pay staff. Within minutes, your food is out from the small back kitchen. 5) Space: It's a cozy space with a bar, window seating, and a small dining room. Two gender neutral bathrooms are in the back. Taxidermy decorate the walls and a free juke box sits in the dining room. It's a well-designed space. 6) Neighborhood: Along Pennsylvania Avenue SE, the Roost, a small food hall, is across the street. Great spot, so happy I finally made it out. The whole place is super vibey. Chill beats, dim lights, just a nice atmosphere. They don't take reservations, but there is a surprising amount of space, plus some outdoor seats during nicer weather, so we had no issues grabbing two seats at the bar around 8 on a Friday. For drinks, they have a good mix of classic cocktails and beers. For food, we weren't blown away by the chicken nugs or the curly fries, which both had nice texture but little flavor. The burger, though. Wow. Easily one of the best burgers in town. We shared their classic, which is the OK Burger - so juicy, little smoky, with onion and pickle, and their trademark sauce. I need to come back and try the other burgers, this one is so good. We had the double (you can get single, double, or triple), and it was perfect. read more
