I love the quality of the food but as a working mom I need to be able to rely on steady hours and over the years it's just been a hit or miss. You always need to call to see if it's open on a given day despite displayed hours, which feels like more work. Not sure what happened but i was not impressed by all the food we got here. They are only open for take out and cash only. We had the salt and pepper fried chicken, fish fillet with pickled vegetables, and the beef noddle soup. Everything was very mediocre with the fish being the worst dish . the fish was soggy, overly soft, extremely salty and had no aroma or flavor what so ever. The salt and pepper fried chicken is one of my favorite from Taiwan and the one here was not crispy enough and the meat was sweet and no basil. Basil in this dish is a must. The beef noddle soup was just okay. Overall perhaps they had an off day. The woman worked behind the counter was very friendly however. Great service, hospitality and food! I'm not Taiwanese but honestly I felt so at home with the food. You can taste a mom's touch in all of these dishes (maybe that's why they named it mama lee). The menu is short and perfect, we got eggplant string beans and pork chops. The meal started with complementary cabbage pork soup and they even gave us complementary fried chicken. This was the best Taiwanese restaurant I have been going to. When I got there, Mama Lee was always welcoming as she brought us soup. I know the price has changed over the years but the food never disappointed. There were two four seated tables on the right. We started with the soup after ordering four main courses. The soup was free and it tasted as natural as it can get. She changed the soup from day to day. There are few dishes I recommended which I believed it was the best around the area. Her lion head (meatballs) was the first dish to go for with the perfect balance of taste and texture. It came with two large size meatball on top of vegetable. The meat melted in the mouth while tasting the spices that was not over powering. I suggested you share with people. The sweet and sour fish was my second on the list. First of all, I hated fish because of fishy taste but here the fish was super fresh with no bone. If you like sour and sweet food, sweet and sour fish is a must order dish regardless of you like fish or not. Salt and pepper chicken was of the classic. Simple and crispy period. We used to really like this place but unfortunately after our most recent experience here, I can no longer recommend Mama Lee. I had heard of some changes in the kitchen and they had trouble finding a chef but it's really in poor shape right now. Thankfully, the prices have remained rather stable but that's about all that I have that is a positive. Interestingly, the container sizes are larger now and I guess you technically get more food but seeing as how it's actually much worse in quality, it's not a good deal at the end of the day. Beef stew- price has gone up to $20 but probably the best remaining item here. It comes with a good amount of Shanghai bok choy (filler or a nice veggie reprieve depending who you ask) with large chunks of beef tendon/meat. The flavor used to be stronger in the meat, the sauce more condensed. It's still a good recipe but kind of seems like it's mailed in. Mapo tofu- this was so strange. Like they put all the random stuff they had in the kitchen. A piece of broccoli?? Bamboo shoots, wood ear mushroom, other random veg. One of the other recent reviews has a picture but you can tell pretty quickly this is neither mapo tofu nor anything resembling it. Importantly, the flavor was not good. Fish with pickled vegetables (suan cai)- another in the strange category. Random peppers, other veggies ... not much fish to be found in here and the flavor was very bland. This dish was just wack. Peking pork chops- wow, just all stuck together with way too much breading caked on, and an utterly uninspired sauce. We also got a veggie dish which was ok but not anything one can't easily cook at home. They used to be very generous with soup and rice, and our order initially came with only three small containers of rice (for five entrees). I really don't understand what's going on with this place. Some of the people are still the same but they have serious problems in the kitchen. I feel bad leaving a negative review but honestly I am rounding up to 2 stars. Truly, it was a disappointing experience and not even all that cheap either. I hope they can right the ship and find a better chef but as of now, it's really poor cooking coming out of here. If you're looking for authentic Taiwanese food, look no further. A relatively small storefront run by a sweet lady who seems to run the entire place by herself! She seems to take phone calls, cook the food, pack the food and work the register all by herself so just be mindful that you will have to wait 30+ minutes for your food during normal peak hours. MamaLee's is that warm fuzzy Taiwanese craving that feels like a hidden gem on Bell Blvd. My wife and I simply called ahead to order take out of 2 Pork chops over rice take out rather than use any apps to order food so that the restaurant doesn't have to pay extra fees on our order. When she picked up it turns out they had already closed but she still took our order over the phone and stayed open which was really nice. She said about 15-20 minutes and we actually showed up early about 10 minutes. When we got there Mama Lee herself welcomed me in, gave me some hand sanitizer and the food was already ready. She even threw in some salt & pepper chicken for free (which we never asked for). I paid and took the food home. I know these are "small" gestures but during times like these, these small gestures are what keeps restaurants and businesses like MamaLee's so authentic. As I'm home eating the pork chops the portions are huge so my wife and I are saving one for tomorrow. They both came with soup with pork and veggies which is delicious and the pork chop itself is crispy and juicy! The salt & pepper chicken is also delicious and has that nice crispy texture and juiciness. This restaurant and its food sits dear to my heart (and stomach) because ever since my grandma passed away 7 years ago I haven't had home cooked Taiwanese food and when I eat at MamaLee's it reminds me of her and her cooking. Mama Lee is a very authentic Taiwanese joint. Family run i assume with the husband, son and Mama Lee. 3 people serving 6 tables that only seats 4 each. That's a lot of work and that's not including take out orders. You got the husband and son in the back cooking or in the front cleaning tables and serving. I have seen some locals or regulars get up and grab their own bowl of rice and helps them clean up when it gets busy. The Lions head meatball is a must try. Huge but not dense, fluffy, airy meatballs. The meal comes with a bowl of soup and rice either purple or white. First time here it's a a gem of a place. You may consider it a "greasy spoon". The food is not your regular take out. The flavor is definitely elevated and some dishes pack quite a punch. Let me start with the complimentary soup! It had two huge chicken drumsticks, some carrots, a little bit of ginger and some greens. Delicious! And for some unexplained reason, our waitress gave us a bowl of baby bok choy! I think she was the owner actually. Anyway, that was another unexpected surprise. Cute little spot for home style Taiwanese food. They're good but a little heavy handed on the msg, I can feel my lips and mouth a bit dry and dehydrated when I got home after lunch. This is a tiny little spot with about 6 tables, 4 seats to each tables. When my boyfriend and I arrived they had their hands full. There was one table available but left with empty dishes from the last group that dined. One server seems to help with table service but still overwhelmed. We cleaned up the table a bit for them and used the hand sanitizer to wipe down the table. My boyfriend and I have been craving for some Taiwanese food and it's been 3yrs since we visited Taiwan. I've seen great reviews for Mama Lee and finally have time to try this place. I ordered the beef noodle soup for the boyfriend, braised pork over rice for me and salt and pepper chicken to share. The meal comes with a chicken and turnip soup, purple rice and five spice peanuts. The beef noodle soup came out quickly and salt and pepper chicken followed. My boyfriend was almost done with his noodles and we have already eaten half of the chicken. They seem to have forgotten about the braised pork over rice and I asked for a follow up. Decided to venture out to Bayside from Long Island to get some Mama Lee and I must say, this was the BEST Taiwanese establishment that I've ever been to. There were plenty of metered and residential parking in the area, which was great. I had called in 10 minutes before their opening time to place my to-go order and the owner, Mama Lee told me to come on in, it's hot out...don't sit in your car. The restaurant was very small with only 5 tables of 4 but don't let that discourage you, the food here is excellent and the service you'd receive would most likely be one of the best you'll ever encounter. After ordering, Mama Lee offered me a cup of fresh watermelon slush while I waited and it was extremely refreshing especially on this hot 92° day. Within 5 minutes or so (@ 11 am), my order was ready and I paid her in exact change ($10.50) and she handed me back a quarter and said here, use it for parking, which was really sweet of her. As for the food, 4 stars. I ordered the Taiwanese style pork chop over purple rice topped with vegetables, minced pork and a tea egg along with their house special soup. Everything was very tasty and delicious. The pork chop was well-seasoned, tender and juicy. The minced pork and the egg, which was a nice addition, complemented the rice perfectly. Very nice family lunch! Came here with mom, dad, and a friend. We stood by the counter and waited a while. There were alcohol prep pads and purell. The table was also wiped down with rubbing alcohol. Very clean. Mama Lee started us off with a big bowl of soup on the house. It was filled with carrots, scallion, potato looking slices....and pork, We ordered 3 dishes: Taiwanese style pork chop, salt and pepper fried fish, and Taiwanese chicken roll. We got 2 bowls of purple rice and one bowl of white rice. I personally enjoyed the salt and pepper fish the most. I love the salt and pepper taste. No, this isn't regular salt and pepper. It is a special seasoning. I'd get this dish again. As for the other two, the Taiwanese style pork chop was juicy and flavorful. It isnt something I'd get again though. The chicken roll I tried because of yelp reviews I read. The texture was interesting. The outside was real crunchy and the inside was chewy and mushy. I didn't really enjoy the mushy texture. The purple rice tasted like white rice. I enjoyed it. I will be back here. I like how the soup is unlimited refills and that Mama Lee and the other lady are very attentive. There is a lot of water available near the front counter. Huge jug of it in addition to a water dispensing machine. Mama Lee let the family behind me pay their bill next time they come by because the guy only had a credit card and the card reader was broken. I have always heard amazing reviews from friends and family about this place but never got around to trying it until recently. In a quieter part of Bayside away from Bell Blvd, Mama Lee is situated in the middle of the block as a small cozy spot. The space itself is quite small, fitting only around 5-8 tables of four. We chose to dine in, but from what I noticed, most people call and choose to pick up. The restaurant itself is owned by Mama Lee and Papa Lee, two very friendly people who seem to manage the whole place by themselves (with maybe one or two others). They remind me of my own grandparents, and the food itself definitely reminds me of my mom/grandparents home cooked meals. Unfortunately for us, coming in at 7PM meant service was going to be really slow, between the people already seated and the people coming in to pick up food. It took us about 45 minutes to get our food (including ordering time). But let me tell you it is WORTH the wait. We ordered the Beef Noodle Soup and Minced Pork, Egg, and Rice. Beef Noodle Soup: I am not usually a noodle soup kind of person but Mama Lees has changed that for me. The most tender, juiciest beef slices mixed with rich broth, reminded me of home. I will say I eat pretty plain food so it did err on the saltier side for me but overall would DEFINITELY recommend. The minced pork, egg, and rice (not as good as the beef noodle soup but a close second). They give a lot of rice and the pork was flavored and seasoned to perfection. Mama Lee was even going around asking if people needed more rice. Both dishes together cost $23.90 (including tax and tip) and my boyfriend, who eats A LOT of food, and I were completely filled up! So worth it!! If you are in town, definitely stop by Mama Lee's for affordable, authentic, and filling Taiwanese food. So glad we were able to finally try Mama Lee's! This has been on our list of places to try on Yelp and while we were down the block, decided to finally try. We ordered the pork chop over rice and the braised pork, tofu and egg over rice. Both were delicious and the portions were large AND the owner- Mama Lee was very nice on the phone as well as in person. While waiting for the food, there was also a new customer ordering with his wife and as they were new to Taiwanese food.. had lots of questions and needed assistance with the menu in choosing their meals. I would've easily given mama's 5*, but I had to round down due to the inflated prices. Walking in, it kind of looks like a clean take out restaurant. There are about 4-5 small tables for eat in customers. All the customers that came in seemed like regulars. Like they were family, which I really liked. There were two middle aged ladies running the whole thing and they were both adorable and uber friendly. They started by serving us complimentary roasted corn tea. I loooved this tea! It had a barley kind of taste to it. I drank 4 cups! We ordered the chicken roll, ground pork with egg and tofu on rice, and spicy eggplant with basil on rice from the lunch special. They also gave us complimentary carrot and daikon soup which was also delicious and not overwhelmed by msg. They were so attentive about refilling our tea and even offered more rice and soup. Everything was seasoned well and made with fresh ingredients. It tasted like a Taiwanese auntie made the food, because a Taiwanese auntie did! I especially became addicted to the chili pepper oil made in house. That stuff is straight up crack! I'd eat cardboard if you put that chili oil on it! The food at Mama Lee's is excellent. Mama Lee's serves very good homemade Taiwanese food in Bayside with matronly love. However, whole establishment seats around 24, so don't bring a big group here. We came on a Sunday night for dinner and this place was packed! We waited by the door until a table left, so we could squeeze in 6 for a table of 4. They made it work! Mama Lee gave us barley tea to start off. It was sweet, savory and warm for a cold winter's night. We ordered large pork meatball, dried sautéed string beans, 4 order of red rice, beef shin stew with noodles, fried chicken and slice fish in sweet and sour sauce. The giant pork meatball was the best that I've ever had! Fluffy, juicy, so flavorful. These were famous in Shanghai and I remember trying one or two in Shanghai but this one was much better. I loved the salty fried string beans with sautéed black beans. The rice and beef shin stew were good. The fried chicken bits were addictive and so crunchy! Mama Lee also gave us daikon and carrot pork bone soup on the house. And she overheard that we wanted to order pork over rice with tea egg. So she gave us one in our take out bag! That was above and beyond anything we expected. And we don't expect this as a regular treatment but we were so thankful. The only pitfall was after dinner, we were slightly thirsty and could taste extra salt in the fried chicken. We will definitely be back with a smaller group or order take out next time! read more

This is our regular place for Taiwanese food. You should call before you come to this place. Sometime they close without notice or close early. Also, you should call on the menu as well because they sold out on their menu. There is no waiter at this restaurant. So, as soon as you come in, order at the counter. The food is home cook food. I love the food and she cooks healthy food. The food does not have any msg. They are now charging $5 for their soup and i think it is worth it. Mama Lee is like getting a to-go box for dinner from your grandma's house. This restaurant is not your usual dine in restaurant. Mama Lee opens her restaurant when she feels like it and when she is open, she would take orders 3 to 4 hours in advance of dinner time and then cook 40+ meals in one night. So call early before 4 pm and get your order in before the dinner rush pick up times. I was lucky and she said she would cook a Taiwanese Pork Chop Over Rice ($11.50) for me in fifteen minutes. I am ready to give Mama Lee five stars and update this review. For most of October/November, Mama Lee traveled to see her ailing parents and closed the restaurant the entire time. I called every single day to check whether she has returned. She recently opened back up and, not surprisingly, customers flocked to the restaurant again. She regretted to inform me that her chef recently retired, so she's doing everything herself, with one staff member. Therefore, Mama Lee had to shrink her menu to only six items. Food: I am pleased to report that all six items are phenomenal. My absolute favorite is the turnip and egg! The "lion head" dish (no actual lion and no actual head involved) actually became larger with Mama Lee making it. The meat and vegetables come together perfectly in this new head! Simple vegetable dishes that are on the menu remind me of home-cooking. Service: it can take an hour to get your food, but trust me, it's worth it. Be patient! Just a note: Mama Lee opens at about 5 p.m. on Wednesdays for the dinner rush. I called at 4:58 p.m. and got to order my food. I arrived a few moments later to notice that the entire restaurant was full, and by 5:29 p.m., Mama Lee had to tell the rest of the customers that she was not taking any orders because she was sold out. This demonstrates that she is not doing this for money, but it appears she's really into meeting people, friendly ones, around the neighborhood and beyond. True home cooked Taiwanese food in the heart of Bayside. All the dishes we had did not disappoint! Amazing flavors and hearty portions make this place hard to beat. Good thing my friend called ahead to find out that she reserved a table for a larger group so we hurried over there. I quickly went inside the restaurant to grab a table...thank god it was emptied! The beef was so tender and melted in my mouth along with those delicious potatoes. The Taiwanese Chicken Roll so crispy and very tasty. The pork bone soup was very tasty along with the mustard greens pointed out my friend and I was thinking Chinese broccoli but duh I don't cook lol to know the difference. The dishes taste like a home-cook meal from your mom's kitchen. I am so happy that me and my friend finally popped our cherries tonight! Mama Lee is so sweet. The food here is amazing. And the owner is the kindest person I've ever known. I used to live in the area so this was my go to place. I moved to west Chester 2 years ago, but I still try to visit here time to time since the food is too good to miss. I also get free soup every time. Overall great great place. Craving for some comfort Chinese food? Mama Lee got you covered! Both the food and service were outstanding! Mama Lee is no question one of the best restaurants at its​ price range! First of all, Mama Lee greeted us in all smiles, so welcoming that I was thrown off my expectation of a typical Asian restaurant service. I felt like I​ was going to an Asian grandma for some secret home cooking that would warm your soul. The food did not disappoint! While waiting for the meal, she brought out some legit pork and bone marrow soup. Not some watered down or powder miso like soups but a bowl filled with a fist-sized​ chunk of bone marrow and all its deliciousness. Honestly, she had me at the soup. The three cup chicken is a must try. The dish has a ​mouthful of flavors while the chicken was tender and juicy. The herbs and spice were distinctly​ fresh. The chili pepper beef had such a fragrant​ smell and the pepper was crispy,​ NOT saggy like your typical restaurant dishes. Both dishes had a wonderful balance of savory​ and spiciness. You can choose between white rice, fried rice, or purple rice... yes PURPLE origin rice, which was​ all complimentary​ with your dish. GET THE PURPLE RICE! Though the restaurant is small, having only 4 or 5 tables, the food is completely worth it. I wouldn't​ even mind eating while standing. The price is extremely reasonable, especially considering the large portion with the tip included!!! I swear Mama Lee is undercharging​ all of us! Bottom line, I am IMPRESSED by Mama Lee's hospitality and her food! Eating here made me feel like eating at my grandma's house. I will no doubt come back.
