Finally! Finally finally finally a place in Austin that tastes like REAL sushi! We got a tip from my husband's co-worker [also from California] about this place and decided to give it a shot. I'll admit, we were a bit leery at first because of the advert in the window about fish tacos, but we went in anyway. It reminded us a little of one of our second-choice places with the bright colors mixed with the black contrast, so that was comforting. The waitress was really helpful and friendly- we hesitantly tried two rolls, and then ended up ordering more, and more and more! Everything was so good- the wasabi was sharp and strong, the eel sauce- oh the eel sauce! It was so right- we haven't tasted proper eel sauce in so long! And the eel itself was amazing- crispy, rich, warm, and broiled to perfection! Not cold, rubbery and flaky like I've gotten at other places here. [Unagi is to be served just broiled, people! Not cold, not Anago trying to be passed off as Unagi, but REAL Unagi! Oh, deliciousness!] Another thing I was pleasantly surprised to see was the use of Kewpie mayo and sriracha. None of the other places utilized those! Shocking! The rich mayo drizzled over one of the rolls was like an old friend. Yum! I only have one "complaint" and it's not even much of a complaint- the tempura is very heavy here. It was good, but very heavy. [Not something to be eaten towards the end of the meal...more like an opener.] They have an all you can eat deal at $22 a person [which we got]- and if you eat more than two rolls, it pays for itself, so it's a great value for those of us who aren't happy with just one roll! Maki Toki is in that little shopping plaza just behind the Walgreens and Wendy's on the corner of Braker and Metric. It's a welcome addition to North Austin dining. Maki Toki is very new, and the menu is still a bit limited, but what they have is served flawlessly. We loved their miso, served with a few raw mushroom slices on top, and the fish was fresh and tasty. The Spider Roll was nicely prepared and, like everything, attractively presented. They even have Mochi ice cream for dessert, should you be so inclined. The place reminded me of sushi places we used to go to in Brooklyn, it's small and has a nice big bar with stools and 4 or 5 big black tall-backed booths. There are two flat-screen TV's, so if you sit at the bar you can watch FoodTV or Discovery while you eat. They do have highchairs. The service has been nice and quick. Drawbacks? None serious. For my tastes the rolls have maybe just a touch too much sauce , but that's a matter of preference. Clearly not a real shortcoming. Tonight when we went the server asked us what we would like to drink and we said "tea", and she came back with iced tea. She quickly and graciously brought us wonderful hot tea when we set her straight, but that's a little weird right? Even in Texas? Also, although there is a big poster saying they have applied for a liquor or beer/wine license, right now there is no booze served. Seems funny to me to not have giant, bitterly-cold Sapporo with sushi, but they are working on it. The prices are great. Nigiri 2 for $2.50, rolls are $5.00 or $8.00, depending on what you get. A woman at one of my accounts up north has been raving about this place for months. So, today after work I decided to stop in here instead of sitting in rush hour traffic and what a great idea it was. I had the Philadelphia Roll with generous portions of salmon, cream cheese and avocado. The salmon was fresh and combined with the rich creaminess plus a high percentage of wasabi to soy sauce created a party in my mouth with a nice little "high" courtesy of the strong wasabi! I also had 2 Nigri Unagi that was just as good as the fancy sushi places at half the price. I don't know how they keep their prices so cheap. My meal was less than 10 bucks, about what I would pay at HEB for pre-prepared chilled sushi. Cold sushi rice is gross - inexpensive yummy fresh sushi is awesomeness... Maki Toki: "You've got some 'splaining to do!" My first experience at this ultra casual sushi joint was mediocre at best. Let's start with the Pros. Maki Toki's staff is adorable, attentive and sweet. Our waitress came out promptly and took our orders with a smile. My Pros list was short (but I'm a glass is half full kinda gal). On to the cons: I like to stick with the basics when trying an unfamiliar sushi spot. Maki Toki - You messed up a simple spicy tuna roll! Let's be frank here. You gave me a tuna roll (with minimal tuna), splattered some hot sauce on top of it and rolled the rice in chili powder. This does not pass for me....no ma'am. I also had a few pieces of nigiri (salmon and smelt roe). These were fine (not OMG, but did the job). The rest of the menu was pretty basic - nothing inventive which I give them credit for since they are not trying to be something they are not. I will say this - I actually thought the pricing was rather high for such a casual strip mall restaurant. Their "fancy" rolls were on the upwards of $12 which is how much I'd expect at a more upscale sushi spot. My spicy tuna roll was $5, but as I mentioned before - it had barley any tuna inside. My suggestion to the restaurant: Perhaps advertise a reverse happy hour in the late evenings to give customers a better bang for their buck on just "so-so" sushi. What a day I had! Don't get me started... SO, as my day was crap by the time my 2pm lunch rolled around, even a beautiful Friday in Austin at about 75 degrees had turned sour. As I was walking towards Subway, I glanced over at Maki Toki, and said to myself, "Poor, poor, pitiful Shooey... you need sushi and a Sapporo; if not sake". a peek at the menu, and the lunch specials and I was in like Flynn. or at least, Mr Moto. Anywho, I ordered the lunch special--on Friday, it's Dynamite Roll, and Maki Roll--and *sigh* decided to forego the Sapporo or the sake. I sat at the sushi bar, and got fast service, and really good sushi. The Dynamite Roll (tuna, salmon, avacado, and a spicy mayo) and the Maki Roll (Faux-crab, avacado, cooked shrimp and a crunchy tempura topping) were both very tasty, and filling. The place was clean, the service was very friendly, and the price was decent for sushi. There's not a whole lot more I can say, but my lunchtime indulgence put me in a better mood, and was worth the mini-splurge (I usually don't like to crack a 10-spot for lunch during the week). I'd seen this place driving around the neighborhood and decided to give it a try a couple of weeks ago. When I went in, I was pleasantly surprised at both the reasonable prices and how friendly the staff was. The mom-and-daughter team (dad works in the back) that run the place were all smiles and very helpful, even though the place was packed and obviously operating at capacity. My wife ordered the tempura bento box, which is a great deal at $8. Their little mini egg rolls done tempura style were awesome (picked up 3 orders of them for her tonight). We also tried a variety of sushi rolls -- a rainbow roll, spicy yellowtail and some kind of tempura roll. All were delicious, fresh and reasonably priced. Is it absolutely the greatest sushi I've ever had? Maybe not, but having been twice, I've found it to be very, very good. Add reasonable prices and great service, and I'll be a regular. read more

Appallingly bad. I came by this place for lunch while running errands and decided to check it out. First disconcerting sign was the absence of other patrons. My optimistic side thought that perhaps this is a hidden gem. Big mistake. They were not carrying several menu items, always fun when that happens. I wound up ordering a $9 veggie tempura bento box. Surprisingly this does not come with miso soup or salad. Ordering those brought the bill to over $16 before tip. The bento box came with "tempura" that was deep fried in common American batter rather than Japanese style panko. It had roughly the same consistency as onion ring batter. There was a saucer of what can only be described as remoulade sauce on the side. The rice was long grain rice, not sushi rice! Really?! There was a cheap deep fried egg roll and California maki. Tastes ranged from bad to awful. The one positive was the waitress, who was polite and attentive. Never again. read more

Did you know that Central Market offers sushi-making classes? I think the ladies of Maki Toki know this, because what I ate tonight tasted a lot like what I made during the CM Sushi 101 class. The various different roll combinations were interesting, but I was disappointed in how many contained tempura-fried or cooked meat. I was trying to keep it healthy, and after eliminating any with fried fish, cream cheese, or mayo-based sauces, my selection was considerably more narrow. I went with a couple of almost all-fish rolls and was really underwhelmed. The fish didn't taste very fresh, and there wasn't anything else going on in there to distract me from the fish with the not-so-fresh feeling. (To be fair, the plainness of the rolls could be chalked up to my restricted ordering, but if you need more ingredients to cover up fish quality, that's a problem.) My friend's cream-cheese-and-tempura-something roll was better, but fried food and cream cheese are delicious anywhere, so they're doing all the heavy lifting. The biggest problem, though (and what several other reviewers have mentioned) is also what reminded me most of the Beginner Sushi quality: the rice. Overhandling of sushi rice makes it mushy and gummy in your mouth. Hey, it's what happens when I make sushi. That's fine when you're playing sushi chef in your own kitchen, but that's not cool when you're paying $10 for a roll. That said, the few pieces of nigiri we had weren't bad, and the service was very friendly. If you're not a purist and are inclined to order rolls with fried fish and/or lots of other ingredients, you'll probably like Maki Toki fine. This is probably one of my favorite places in austin. I have been hitting maki toki for a few months now, and it has been some of the most consistent, savory, and inexpensive sushi hands down. I take friends and family, both sushi lovers and non, and everyone leaves satisfied and full. also, SO CHEAP. Time and time again, from Austinites, to Los Angelites, to New Yorkers, always amazed that for the AMOUNT of food they plate you that you can comfortably eat for two people for under 40 bucks (and thats after ordering tons of food), when the same food and quality elsewhere, would run you more than 100. It is usually the first place friends in town, that have been before, will ask to go eat. The Food (what i regularly order, i've had everything, but these are the ones that are staples): Appetizers Edamame- (bowl for $2.50, and for someone who hated Edamame, to get me to now order it every time i sit down at a table is saying something) Egg Rolls (three, inch and a half pieces, $2.50)- Unusual but tasty, the wrap comes across as a stringed-philo dough made into a wrap, with an array of tasty julienned veggies inside and fried, yum!) Calamari ($5)- NOT a tempura batter, but more of a light breading, and not ringlets either, the calamari are excellent dippers, and the sauce they serve with it is an excellent companion. Nigiri Side-note: to quote several NY friends "I can't believe the nigiri is so phenomenal, but so cheap!" Salmon ($3)- Great texture and taste Tuna ($3)- Good tuna, but prefer ... Peppered Tuna ($3.50)- Favorite order #1- pan seared for just a second with a nice thick pepper coating. Warning: there are times they go a little overboard with the pepper, but the pieces are so large, the pepper will mesh well overall. Escolar ($3)- 97% of the time, spot on and an amazing price for two excellent pieces. I don't know where they get it, but it is some of the best i've had, melts in your mouth kinda good (in the interest of full disclosure, 1 time out of 30 or so, the escolar may be sub par) Rolls California Roll (6 pieces. - $5) (imitation crab, cucumber, avocado) Good, but, it's a cali roll Spicy Tuna (6 - $5) - Another fave, simple and tasty Asparagus Tuna (8 - $5) smaller in size, but 8 of them, excellent bite size, good with cucumber (they were out of asparagus at closing one night), and with asparagus even better. Rainbow (6/7 - $8) - "It's got all the colors" and is delicious. Overtime have had each piece, and each piece, delectable. Savory Delight (8 - $9)(tuna, salmon, yellow tail rolled and tempura fried) - Favorite order #3: As the name says, a savory delight. The breading is not heavy, and adds just the right amount of flavor and crunch. one of the "heavier" options, and to say heavy is liberal, it just "feels" like it when you begin noshing on it, but when you down it,"sushi shouldn't be so completely filling and tasty, i mustn't have more!" but you totally do. Spiro (8 - $8)(spicy tuna inside with salmon and avocado outside) - An excellent large roll. I met up with a group of friends for some Sake and the all you can eat sushi special. They service was horrifyingly slow, an obvious attempt to bore you before you ate enough sushi to recoup your investment. It took well over three hours for us to get 3 courses of sushi, and our glasses were empty most of the night. I went here for lunch the other day. I was a bit skeptical due to the other reviews here, but a sushi place so close to my work, I can't pass up. I had the $12 lunch special, which is a cali roll, spicy tuna roll, and spicy salmon roll. I had no idea coming in how big their rolls will be. They were 8 pieces a piece, so 24 pieces of sushi for $12, I think, is a pretty good deal. My friend had the fried pork bento box. It came with big pieces of pork, 3 pieces of cali roll, rice, 2 sauces, 2 tuna egg rolls, and 3 pieces of fruit tempura. That was a lot of food for $8. Overall this place won't match up to it's higher priced counterparts, but for what it is, and for what you get, can't hurt to give it a try. read more

I feel like there was a lot that could have been improved with the overall experience at Maki Toki. First of all I do not like the fact that there is no place to sit that isn't facing a television. It was too much the focus of the entire place, these two t.v.s. There were three of us and I was buying for two so I wanted a cheapish but still delicious sushi place close by, and Maki Toki definitely fit with in the cheap and close by requirements but the food was mediocre. I think that may have to do with me not being too much of a roll person. The edamame was way too salty and over cooked, but the seaweed salad was just right, the rolls were too heavy and thick, while the nigiri was good - not great, but not bad either. The peppered tuna was awesome, having never had tuna prepared in such a way, I was pleasantly surprised. The mochi could have been thawed a bit before serving but was perfect once it had a chance to melt some. I had never had creamy sake before, I really liked the unfiltered nature of it, thick and sweet, great with the mochi. We had the fried banana, eh -- I'm really not into fried thickness, I could see how some people would like it. Overall this place was ok. Good for cheap sushi, but I'd rather spend some more and go for more fresh of a selection. read more

The table next to me was having it out with the waitstaff about the fish tacos. Who knows, they could have been jerks and I could have ordered the wrong thing. I went there for lunch recently and my friend and I ordered three rolls, four pieces of nigiri, and two miso soups for just under $30. The miso soup was way, way off. The seaweed they put in there was two sad strips nori, not wakame (the appropriate seaweed for miso). The tofu in the soup also looked like it was sloppily scooped out of the tofu box, not chopped into small cubes. They also put mushrooms in the soup, which is not kosher for miso. I counted one small green onion floating around in the soup, and the soup lacked dashi. Needless to say, I won't be ordering miso soup there again. The nigiri was okay. The texture of the escolar was a bit mushy, and it made me suspect it was not fresh. Whenever you poke your fish with a chopstick and it doesn't return to its original form isn't good. The yellow tail was surprisingly good though. The spider roll was an awesome deal for the price. The spicy tuna roll was simply a tuna roll with sriracha sauce splashed over the rice. The tuna itself didn't have any spicy sauce incorporated into it. The third roll was cooked, but the salmon inside of it was cooked as well (I doubt that was the intention). Consequently, the roll lacked flavor. I didn't order any of the sushi combos b/c the menu didn't say that they included soup or miso. If that was the case, the prices of the sushi combos aren't a good deal at all. This has to be one of the oddest reviews I've written. There were so many hits and so many misses. I wouldn't recommend this place for lunch, as the prices weren't as inexpensive as everyone raved about. (I believe that sushi for lunch should offer good sushi combos). I stopped by here from Walgreens after I noticed their "Angry Hour" specials from 4:30pm to 6pm. I like sushi but I don't eat it very often and I would definitely not consider myself an expert. I lived in Japan for a bit so I do have an idea of what it ideally should taste like. The best thing about the place was that it was cheap(for happy hour). I ordered the Jade Roll, nigiri salmon and miso soup and it came out to $7.57. You can't go wrong with that. The rice was chewy and that was the worst part of the sushi. Otherwise it was fine. Although the miso soup is not what some would call traditional, I loved it. There were two things that were not cool. One, the manager took the parking spot directly in front of the restaurant instead of parking further away. That is just kinda lame. Secondly, they had two TV going and one of them was playing the Food Channel show where they eat weird things and the cast was in Vietnam slicing snakes open and eating their still beating hearts wiggling around between chopsticks. Seeing that after eating sushi was not too fun. Overall the sushi was fine, not great but not nasty as some reviewers have commented. The regular dinner price did seem a bit expensive and if I had a choice between this place and somewhere like mikado for a few bucks more, I would definitely go to mikado. read more

This place was my husband and I's second date when we were courting. I got lost and ended up here just as my phone died. They calmed me down and let me charge it there until I could contact my date. He met me, we ate there, and were amazed at the quality for the price! We come here for anniversaries, we bring family, we bring our daughter. If I could, I would come monthly. my husband and I went here for dinner after being recommended by a good friend. We had a gift certificate from restaurant.com which made us even more excited to try it. I'm from the Pacific Northwest where we get some of the freshest sushi around so I'm hard to please. That being said this place was good, one of the better sushi places that I have eaten at since moving to Texas. We ordered the calamari (which was not so great) as an appetizer, we also got miso soup. My husband ordered tuna, salmon and escolar sashimi (they don't have it listed on the menu but will gladly make it). It was super fresh and tasty. I got a couple different rolls, my favorite was the roll that was tempura fried. we got out of there for about 75 bucks which isn't bad considering my husband pretty much ate his weight in sashimi and that's not cheap! The only downside that I could see was the service. The waitress was nice but not attentive at all, we pretty much had to trip her to get her to stop at our table. read more

I frequent this location with my friend and we have never had a bad experience. It is family owned and the sushi is great with great prices. Everything always tastes fresh and we are always taken care of! Highly recommend. read more
