I've seen this restaurant often when going to Walgreens at W Braker and Metric and FINALLY ate there for an early lunch today. What a smart decision! I had the soft shell crab appetizer (I was raised on The Eastern Shore of VA and I know good crabs!) and yellowtail tuna nigiri. Each dish was perfect. Crab was crispy, non oily, with that sweet white interior you crave and included lovely asparagus - an unexpected extra in an appetizer. I guess when you order a certain amount you are given a free miso soup, and the soup was steaming and so flavorful. I could not finish it and when given my to go container they had topped up my soup to a full bowl! What a gracious and surprising touch. The menu is extensive and I plan to bring friends and family to delve into more yumminess. We love Maki Toki angry hour and all you can eat sushi. We've been coming here for about 4 years. Sushi is amazing- have yet to try something we don't like. Staff is always really nice as well. Sushi rolls, hand rolls and burritos are stuffed with yummy fish. The sweet Stacy (sweet potato and cream cheese) is one of the best rolls I've ever had. So I used to work a couple blocks from Maki Toki and began going there about 6 months ago. The lunch specials were always rockin and the sushi was pretty darn good. Yes I have had better, but it is reasonably priced and has been fresh each time. I always noticed a sign for Sushi Angry Hour from 4:00-6:30, but since the lunch special was 2 of the rolls we like for 15 I thought hey how much better could the evening prices be? Well I went for the happy hour last night and a friend and I had 2 bowls of miso, 2 pieces of nagiri each, and 2 rolls and walked away with a 15 dollar tab. The people who work here are super friendly, the atmosphere is relaxed and the prices are killer. I am not a snob so theres probably alot better out there.. but if you are a fan of sushi and don't have a silver spoon up your ass then you'll love this place. read more

The 4 piece nigiri regular menu price is less than the happy hour menu price. 4. The escolar is labeled correctly. It's not hidden as "white tuna". But, why have "ex-lax" fish on the menu at all? People go home with an upset stomach &, if they don't know they ate something that causes an evac, they think they ate bad fish. The cons: 1. The selection is limited. 2. The nigiri is over priced. 3. The Maki rolls are under-filled. 4. There's a Mayo sauce on every roll. It's a small amount, but it's not mentioned in the description of the rolls. As a recent Vegas transplant, I understand that I've been spoiled & I'm a sushi snob, so I'm trying to adjust my expectations. I'm looking for fresh fish, fair prices and a good selection. After being allures by their "angry hour" pricing, I decided to dine at this off the beaten path joint. Upon entering I realized I was the only diner here. Not a good sign. Upon choosing my seat, I realize that the table was covered in something. I clean the table off myself and it's still sticky. I order three rolls and nigiri. As soon as the nigiri hits by table, I'm not feeling good about my choices. My first roll was something that I couldn't even make out. Whoever dropped my food didn't mention anything either. My 3rd and 4th rolls were dropped. I had to ask for napkins and accoutrements for the second round. 2 of the rolls were sliced so thin it made picking them up next to impossible. My very last bite of sushi had shrimp tails in it. I'm sure I've had better sushi at grocery stores and Chinese buffets. This stuff was just not pleasant in any way. read more

So I am a firm believer in customer feedback and I truly hope as an owner you're paying attention to my post. I walked into the establishment and right off the bat without eating your food I didn't want to eat here. Specifically of how I felt. The energy in the restaurant is at a all time low. As a customer you usually feel the energy that the business, owner, customers, food etc that is projected out but I felt nothing. I ordered the chicken Katsu and my girlfriend ordered the shrimp manago roll and the spicy salmon. Chicken Katsu: * presentation was bad, outdated and showed no heart or care. The presentation was done by someone doing what a machine could do. If your food presentation can't reflect the love you have for your business don't do it. * the Katsu being sliced is a no no in your case. The orange mayo dressing you have on the small place try putting it on the chicken for presentation purposes. The rice was over cooked, the broccoli florets shouldn't be fried (you need something fresh and green on the tray) the egg roll was horrific. I would invite you to eat the food you put out before you serve it to others. * the shrimp mango roll had no shrimp and also had way to much cream cheese I guess to substitute for having no shrimp. * advice: remove the big booths and put a open booth bench along the wall and put tables in front of that with single chairs on the other side. * the bathrooms are gross, the decor is outdated and music that was playing put it back in the elevator. Once again I'm not trying to be rude. I love entrepreneurs but you gotta step it up. You have so much potential to truly open up your doors to good business. Market yourself, reduce the menu options, focus on go toos. Your business is located right down the street from the domain!!! Make people want to jump in the cars, walk down the street from their apartments make a to go order, sit down and chill because the environment is right. YOU. CAN. DO. THIS! I don't know you personally but I believe you but if it's to much throw in the towel but if you truly want to do this then be better!!! I'm not from Texas. I lived in Seattle for 10 years so I'm a little bias when it comes to sushi. Good things: service. Bad thing: this is not sushi. I'm not really sure what is just ate. The pieces are are cut uneven; they're disproportionate. I'm sure they mean we'll and it looks like family run business but if you've never made sushi before it's not for you. Well in all honesty I didnt have high hopes when walking since we were the ONLY people in the whole place. I think we were asked by 3 different people how we heard of them. I guess they were hoping we hadn't heard the awful news: their sushi sucks. 1) the sushi restaurant only had 1 lonely lady making sushi. So we got there at 7 and didnt leave till 9:30 and we only ordered 3 rolls each. For an AYCE sushi place this was just unacceptable. I've had faster service at all other sushi places! 2) It was literally a 30 min per roll and maybe only 15 min. for the dessert 3) The sushi was all rice and we were lucky if there was any filling in the middle. The service (drink refill wise) was not horrible.. she refilled us. and served our alcohol. Not bad considering we were the only diners. That tipped me off but I was hoping it was just because it was a Monday night. I was wrong. Everybody already knows this place is the worst sushi place around. Ive eaten sushi across the country, this is right up there with those sushi rolls you get at the gas station. Even HEB sells better tasting sushi, with 10x more meat in the center.. not just a rice roll. That's what the name should be changed to. "Rice rolls are us" I would not come back. Great service today from a young lady. Went during their "Angry Hour" which is 4:30-7 every day, so that's nice. That being said the food was really mediocre. I ordered the Some Like It Hot that had cream cheese but it was only on the top and not throughout the roll, so some of the bites didn't even have cream cheese- which makes for a whole different experience. The one star is because they overcharge my credit card by two dollars every time. I know this because I am in Austin on business and must reconcile my receipts. I stopped in today to grab a quick bite with hopes of getting a good happy hour deal. As I entered the shop I noticed it was clean and quiet. I was instantly greeted by a woman with a big smile. I was promptly seated and was given the happy hour run down. I asked if I could substitute a philly roll for the hiro roll and they allowed me to do so. Finally! Finally finally finally a place in Austin that tastes like REAL sushi! We got a tip from my husband's co-worker [also from California] about this place and decided to give it a shot. I'll admit, we were a bit leery at first because of the advert in the window about fish tacos, but we went in anyway. It reminded us a little of one of our second-choice places with the bright colors mixed with the black contrast, so that was comforting. The waitress was really helpful and friendly- we hesitantly tried two rolls, and then ended up ordering more, and more and more! Everything was so good- the wasabi was sharp and strong, the eel sauce- oh the eel sauce! It was so right- we haven't tasted proper eel sauce in so long! And the eel itself was amazing- crispy, rich, warm, and broiled to perfection! Not cold, rubbery and flaky like I've gotten at other places here. [Unagi is to be served just broiled, people! Not cold, not Anago trying to be passed off as Unagi, but REAL Unagi! Oh, deliciousness!] Another thing I was pleasantly surprised to see was the use of Kewpie mayo and sriracha. None of the other places utilized those! Shocking! The rich mayo drizzled over one of the rolls was like an old friend. Yum! I only have one "complaint" and it's not even much of a complaint- the tempura is very heavy here. It was good, but very heavy. [Not something to be eaten towards the end of the meal...more like an opener.] They have an all you can eat deal at $22 a person [which we got]- and if you eat more than two rolls, it pays for itself, so it's a great value for those of us who aren't happy with just one roll! Not only that but most of the stuff was on the AYCE menu, so it was the most cost effective for trying everything. Maki Toki is in that little shopping plaza just behind the Walgreens and Wendy's on the corner of Braker and Metric. It's a welcome addition to North Austin dining. Maki Toki is very new, and the menu is still a bit limited, but what they have is served flawlessly. We loved their miso, served with a few raw mushroom slices on top, and the fish was fresh and tasty. The Spider Roll was nicely prepared and, like everything, attractively presented. They even have Mochi ice cream for dessert, should you be so inclined. The place reminded me of sushi places we used to go to in Brooklyn, it's small and has a nice big bar with stools and 4 or 5 big black tall-backed booths. There are two flat-screen TV's, so if you sit at the bar you can watch FoodTV or Discovery while you eat. They do have highchairs. The service has been nice and quick. Drawbacks? None serious. For my tastes the rolls have maybe just a touch too much sauce , but that's a matter of preference. Clearly not a real shortcoming. Tonight when we went the server asked us what we would like to drink and we said "tea", and she came back with iced tea. She quickly and graciously brought us wonderful hot tea when we set her straight, but that's a little weird right? Even in Texas? Also, although there is a big poster saying they have applied for a liquor or beer/wine license, right now there is no booze served. Seems funny to me to not have giant, bitterly-cold Sapporo with sushi, but they are working on it. The prices are great. Nigiri 2 for $2.50, rolls are $5.00 or $8.00, depending on what you get. A woman at one of my accounts up north has been raving about this place for months. So, today after work I decided to stop in here instead of sitting in rush hour traffic and what a great idea it was. I had the Philadelphia Roll with generous portions of salmon, cream cheese and avocado. The salmon was fresh and combined with the rich creaminess plus a high percentage of wasabi to soy sauce created a party in my mouth with a nice little "high" courtesy of the strong wasabi! I also had 2 Nigri Unagi that was just as good as the fancy sushi places at half the price. I don't know how they keep their prices so cheap. My meal was less than 10 bucks, about what I would pay at HEB for pre-prepared chilled sushi. Cold sushi rice is gross - inexpensive yummy fresh sushi is awesomeness...
