We had 3 meals -- crabcake sandwich, a pasta and beef concoction . . . and jambalaya. Drinks were strong, service very good. The crabcake was ok, but seemed " a little off," fairly common problem with crab it seems this season. The pasta and beef was nicely done and flavorful. But the jambalaya . . . oh, the jambalaya! The ingredients . . . sausage, shrimp, chicken, veggies, sauce . . . were very good and I ate it all . . . but all the while thinking something was wrong . . . the linguine was overcooked and downright mushy, ruining the normal jambalaya ingredients. Then after we left it hit me -- LINGUINE!!! Who makes jambalaya with LINGUINE???!!! It's supposed to be over RICE!!! I've since checked every jambalaya recipe in the world, I think, and every one calls for RICE!!! After church my wife wanted to try brunch. I must say that I feel they have the best brunch I've been to in the area. I've done brunch in and around the Baltimore/DC/Silver Spring area. But to stay local and still have a great experience was great. I must say that this isn't an all you can eat brunch. Too say I'm a regular here would put it mildly. I've checked in 48 times, probably missed a dozen checks. This place is my favorite in the frederick area. The place hits the big 3 for me, clean, fresh, and great service. I've got twin boys, that love the kids meal options. Cheeseburger and MacCheese. My wife has her 3 favorite options. Crab cake, prime rib, and fillet. The wood-fired grill makes the steaks and seafood just that much better. For me, ribeye, ribs, and the goat cheese dip app. My wife and I are enjoying the happy hour special. Dollar off beers and 1/2 priced appetizers. No place is perfect. I've had a few off meals. I wanted to love this place but was kind of disappointed. My intention was to go there for brunch but I guess they had switched the menu to lunch. The prices are very reasonable I'll give them that and the service is relatively quick and and friendly. However one dish completely threw me off unfortunately which was the jambalaya. Looked good on outside but was completely void of flavor and a gigantic portion. I just couldn't finish it and had to send it back. I didn't receive any resistance but I was just really disappointed that that was the case. I was expecting more from a restaurant that has been in the area for some time now. I will say the crab dip is absolutely delicious I loved great portion and the bread was fresh. Excellent food with many options. When I think of traditional food with a twist, I think of their menu. Good flavoring, home made and tastes like it. I would define it was traditional American, no ethnic twists. While I like various types of ethnic food, we were feeling something like traditional comfort food - and this exceeded our expectations. My only "negative" are the number of booth seating options, I prefer table and chairs and not having to slide in and out when someone needs to get up. Nice to be able to call ahead for seating. Madrones is on our playlist of to go places in Frederick. Wife usually gets the Penne Toscana which never disappoints. Lately I can't seem to pry myself away from the blackened salmon. Have been going here for years and really appreciate the ease of curbside pickup system they've implemented in the back parking lot. What's really good here? Umm everything on the menu. Must haves are the spinach artichoke dip, chop house salad, steaks (be sure to get the port wine or Gorgonzola sauce), crab cakes, and the deserts are all next level. Madrones is a totally underrated brunch spot in the Frederick area - it has a great weekend brunch menu with multiple eggs benny dishes, overstuffed omelets, ooey gooey pull apart monkey bread, and even some brunch drink specials. It's nice because it's less cramped, (usually) less wait time, and easy peasy parking than any of the brunch places you'll find downtown. I recently went with a group of five and we all thoroughly enjoyed our meals and our service. I've been for lunch/dinner as well and have never been disappointed. I'm not sure how I'm supposed to feel about this place. One one hand it has rustic aesthetic and dim lighting for an intimate mood, but on the other it has a bar smack in the middle of the dining area, surrounded by flat screens with sports on. Sports bars are fine, but this pretty much kills the atmosphere of the "upscale" intimate mood. The food was okay. The rolls brought to the table as an appetizer were stale, but the chicken sandwich I got was pretty good and the sweet potato casserole side I ordered was awesome, albeit not for those who are sensitive to sweetness; this thing is diabetes in a bowl. I think "aioli" is the Food Network term in season right now because it seemed like half the menu items were served with some sort of aioli sauce, including my sandwich. I don't want to come down too hard on this place because I'm sure in some circles this place would be fine dining, but anyone with a bit of diversity in their restaurant outing experiences could tell that this is pretty much three star chain dining with fancier decor. read more

This was my first time at this restaurant. My husband brought me here for my birthday. The menu is all-American. It is a family friendly environment with a casual feel. The decor feels like a merge with Cheddars and an Applees. The service was great. The waitress was helpful, attentive, and got our orders correct. She was attentive for any possible food allergies and provided great recommendations. They have a large bar seating area that can handle groups. They played songs that make you want to sing along. They played classic rock, 90's pop, and light rock while we were there. We ordered the chicken tenders that were fresh and well seasoned. The breading was thick but there was plenty of meat to balance it out. I got a Caesar salad but it came with roasted tomatoes which was interesting. Ultimately I wasn't thrilled with it. We ordered the peanut butter pie and cheesecake to finish the meal. They were both rich and yummy. My husband said that he wouldn't mind coming again. It was his kind of place with a menu that fit him like a glove...classic rock and roll, American menu, casual environment, and great service. My wife and I bring our kids to Madrones atleast once a month. We have always enjoyed the service we receive. I come only because of the Prime Rib. However, today we had a TOTAL DIFFERENT EXPERIENCE. Especially dealing with a manager by the name Rich. We had taken our dinner home to go since we were full from eating our appetizers and salad and their warm rolls. When we were unpacking our food we realized that my loaded baked potato didn't come with sour cream. No big deal. Then my Prime Rib didn't come with horseradish saws. Another no big deal. My wife order Steak Medallions, which she orders quite frequently. The food didn't taste consistent with what she ordered before. I called the Restaurant and the manager spoke to wife as she was trying to explain that her dish didn't come out well and especially the mashed potatos, I don't know what he was assuming but he kept making my wife feel as if she were lying about her distaste in the dish to the point upsetting my wife. He is a disgrace to the service business and will NEVER come in that place again!!! STAY AWAY FROM RICH IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM WITH YOUR FOOD. Madrones is a chain style meat and seafood restaurant...it feels like I've eaten there 100 times before. We stopped in for an early dinner on a Sunday and we were seated immediately. After a rough week of moving to this area, we were in the mood for a drink! We both ordered a beer, my boyfriend got the left hand milk stout(which is awesome) and I got the cherry ale, which was flat. We also ordered a super oak chardonnay, which came in a carafe, nice pour, lovely wine! Now the food, we ordered the "le grand" burger medium, it was cooked well done and the sirloin, which was supposed to be medium and came out rare and a little too salty. Their steaks and burgers are very thick, which makes checking the cook temperature difficult...If your going to go big, you gotta get it right! For dessert...key lime pie...which we were told it was made with real key limes...I doubt that but it was creamy and delicious. Overall, I liked Madrones. Would I go back? Yesterday was our first visit at Madrones. We decided to go for dinner with our family and we had an amazing experience. The food was delicious, and although they have a bar, the environment was family friendly. During our visit the star of the day was our AMAZING SERVER MAGGI ! She is one of the best servers we've ever met. She was friendly, attentive, patient, and extremely respectful. We made her aware that it was our first visit at Madrones and she went above and beyond to makesure we had a pleasant experience. Madrones is so lucky to have employees like her. Horrible service from the time my African American family and I walked through the door! The staff at the door are young and unprofessional. The four of them were sitting around the Host/Hostess Station laughing and talking amongst themselves as another African American family was leaving and we were coming in. When they noticed that we were not the same family, they scrambled to their feet to get to their respective areas. We were not greeted, only asked how many were in our party. The young man and girl chatted amongst themselves and then the young man walked away. We were left standing at the door for about three minutes with no information. I asked the girl what exactly it was that we were waiting for and then she told me that there was not an area big enough for 5 and they had to find us a table. Ok cool. The young man comes to take us to our table which was in the back of the restaurant in the corner where no one else was, past two clean high top tables that could have worked. Needless to say, we collectively felt uncomfortable with their prejudice and decided to leave. We informed the waitress that "we don't appreciate being stuck in the back in the corner and we will not be staying", to which she replied, "ok, I understand". She didn't call a manager or try to change our seats or do anything useful. She was just not helpful at all, nor was she empathetic. The other unfortunate part is that this restaurant was recommended to us and it's my birthday weekend. We were looking to celebrate as a family, have some fun and eat some good food, but it was ruined by their racist antics. We will not be coming back to this establishment and will deter other African American families from patronizing them as well. read more

Very friendly service, excellent rolls, delicious soups. Fries are excellent! Server recovered well when my daughter found a hair in her mashed potatoes. They reacted quick, and actually took the meal off the bill without asking. Speaking of which the mashed potatoes are country style with chive butter, which many kids may not like. The kids meals come with a drink, entree and side and dessert. All for $6 or under, which is a great deal. Soup and sandwich combo was excellent with fantastic service at $8.99. I ordered the French dip sandwich. I always order no matter where I go but this was my fist visit here. I dipped my fried dip once into the au ju and it was pure grease. I took the rest home. then tried it without the dip but it taste the same. pure grease to my stomach. I ended up throwing up because of the grease and no other flavors. I have no issue with great foot as long as it doesn't tase like grease with nothing more to offer. the fries were great and the service but I would never recommend the food. not 1 out of 8 even came close to finishing their meal for my sons graduation. Came in for the first time...tried the Colorado rolls, cheeseburger and prime rib. Prime rib.. 7 of 10. The horseradish wasn't pungent enough, the crust lacked flavor. My burger patty needed some seasoning. Colorido rolls, great flavor of you enjoy spicy. The Dijon that came with was yummy. Can't complain about the service, that was great, ambiance was also great. I am addicted to the portabella mushroom penne at Madrones and frequently order it either at the restaurant itself or for take-out (which they'll deliver directly to your car, out back). It's a very popular place, so it can be crowded and/or loud, but it's always a pleasant place to eat, even so, and I haven't had a single bad experience with the waitstaff. They've always been very pleasant and enthusiastic and entirely patient with any modifications I or my husband have wanted to make to the meal. The plaza that Madrones sits in has a lot of restaurants and other shops, so it can sometimes be a bit tricky to find convenient parking, but I'd say it's worth it! read more
