Turned out to be a very memorable first visit. We found this restaurant after using Google Gemini to find "Authentic German Food" when we arrived in the parking lot, we saw the chefs sitting outside taking a breather next to where we'd parked, but thought nothing of it at first. It was our first year of dating anniversary but we failed to notice when looking the place up that they closed at 7:30pm. We walked in at about 7:40pm and the bartender regretfully informed us that they had just closed. We accepted the situation for the error it was on our part and opted to go elsewhere. So barely 3 minutes after walking up to the entrance, we were heading back to our truck. The chefs were still there and immediately asked us why we weren't staying to eat. When we explained that we hadn't realized they closed at 7:30, they looked at us and said, "Go back in there and tell them we said we're still open for you guys." We were a bit concerned that we'd cause hard feelings and said we could just come back a different day, and they wouldn't have it. "We're the guys who'll be cooking, not them, if we're okay with it, then what have you got to lose?" We looked at each other and thought briefly and headed back up to the entrance. I had mentioned that I had a spur of the moment 'hankerin' for German Food, and he said, "Well, you're at the right place!" Before we got back in the front door, one of the chefs (we learned shortly after were the owners) was already letting the bar staff know to get us seated and taken care of. My girlfriend ordered the Chicken Cordon Bleu, and I ordered the Pork Schnitzel. We of course sampled each others' dishes and it was beyond amazing on both entrees. Some of the best schnitzel I've had NOT in Europe, and the mushroom onion gravy was so savory and rich. The Chicken was loaded with flavor and I could definitely see that being on a future order for myself. After we were beyond stuffed, we decided to split a dessert for the occasion and had the Chocolate Mousse Cake. When the bartender learned it was our first anniversary, she made sure to get a candle to put in the cake for us, it was a very nice and welcoming touch. The bar staff was on their game with the service, keeping drinks full and checking on us frequently to make sure we were good to go. There were only two other tables still seated in the restaurant at that point, and they were actually there already eating when we first arrived. They were still there when we departed, so we assumed they may have been family friends or locally important patrons. The ambiance of the restaurant has a very British Pub feel to it, and it is so amazingly cozy and feels like home. We both left with an amazing impression and cannot wait for another chance to try some of the other menu options. I'm very curious to try the Filet Mignon next time, but the Stroganoff looked quite tempting as well. I think we both found a place that we'll absolutely keep on the short list of places to revisit next time we're in town. It was such a memorable experience and we so greatly appreciated the flexibility and hospitality they demonstrated. That type of service is so hard to find these days. Don't look for modern trends in food and restaurants here, this restaurant not trying be those. Just very well prepared classic dishes in a quiet but cozy atmosphere. Great food and service. This was my first visit to Gladchuk Bros Restaurant in years even though it has been a staple in Frederick as long as I can remember. We met friends for a quick visit when we were in town and it was a perfect place to stop in for lunch. I had a loaded potato soup and it was so good and filling with and emphasis on the term loaded. Other members of our party ordered a sandwich, a salad and a burger and the portions were generous and the salad was quite large and full of fresh ingredients. Our service was great as we were there on a weekday at lunchtime so they were not very busy. The dining room is clean and kept in great shape. The décor is lovely with a nod to the historic buildings age. The lovely woodwork and hard wood floors make it so cozy , and a beautiful fireplace at the entrance complete the cozy feel of the restaurant. read more

Used to visit Gladchuk's when in the mood for German food or a really nice salad. It's been a while. Some things have changed,some have not. The good: the ambiance is warm and inviting making me think of Old Town Heidelberg. The staff are amazing - attentive, quick, and ready to offer refills without begging. This was especially significant as the dining room as packed and front-of-house staff was small. The less good: like every restaurant these days, prices are higher than I remember. Price points for non-apps were generally in the $24-$27 range; reasonable but not an everyday-lunch place. German choices were limited to a wurst plate or pork schnitzel with onion gravy. I chose the schnitzel and was not super impressed. Pork was not pounded thin enough, breading was not crisp and pretty much fell off the meat (because the oil temp was too low to cook the thick pork without burning the breading?). Gravy and accompanying sides were good but the mixed vegs were really, really soft. And - horrors!! - they had no German beer choices ( I do not consider Sam Adam's Oktoberfest a Germanbeer, sorry). I was very surprised. So will I go back? Absolutely, but would order something else. Maybe a nice winter salad with beets, Spousal Unit's go to when she would take her staff for lunch (and when it was available, being a seasonal choice). I got the filet mignon, it was awesome. I don't think I've ever had a more tender steak. My wife got cod. She said next time she'll get it stuffed with crab meat. So you might want to try it that way first. The service was great. One of the owners, Steve greeted us at the door as always. Very friendly atmosphere. It's been too long since our last visit. But i think we should start making it one of our regular spots. Give them a try, you won't be disappointed. read more

From S Florida, Gladchuk Bros is always a MUST when we are in the Frederick area.. The atmosphere is so warm and inviting. However, despite reservations, we waited nearly 45 minutes for our table on Valentines evening with nowhere to sit while we waited. Due to the busyness, our server did not interact with us in any way. However, the owner was very attentive. A wandering quartet was such a nice touch and each woman received a red rose which was so thoughtful. We will remember to avoid V-Day in the future unless it is the first sitting of the day. Staff was friendly enough but not particularly attentive. Food left a lot to be desired. Ordered the French Onion Soup and the Angus Burger. The cheese on top of the soup was burnt to a crisp while the soup itself was lukewarm at best. Ordered the burger cooked medium. Half of the patty was medium while the other half was still quite pink, and the bun was completely saturated with grease. My $9 White Russian was essentially a glass of ice with half-and-half, and looked as though they shook it vigorously for 5 minutes because the froth was almost deeper than the drink itself. Will not be eating there again. You're basically paying for the aesthetic. read more

Positive - service was good, waitstaff very attentive. Negative - food was less than fair, and for the price, I expected much better. The pierogis were soggy and gave with a weird sauce. The schnitzel was covered in a thick goopy gravy, the vegetables were overcooked and the scalloped potatoes were covered in rubbery cheddar. Even the bread pudding was lacking. This was our first time at this restaurant. We ordered the pierogies and the coconut shrimp for apps. Both are made fresh and were pretty delicious. Portion size is too small though. However, I ordered the chicken Parmesan and my boyfriend had the veal Parmesan . Unfortunately, we were very disappointed. The sauce was too sweet and ruined the meal. Also they were very skimpy on the pasta and vegetables. And they used egg noodles instead of regular spaghetti or fettuccini. Definitely not my favorite! Our other friend had the pork schnitzel. It slapped! Guess they should go with what they know. And off - food - topic, my boyfriend used the men's lavatory and he had to comment that the men's urinal is way too high. This coming from a 6ft3 man. He was shocked that while urinating his testicles made contact with the urinal. Slapping against the rim like a wet paper towel. I wonder how shorter men are able to reach the urinal without the use of a stepping stool or ladder. That seems like really bad placement. We did in fact notice on leaving the restaurant that the owner (possibly manager) is 7feet tall. Maybe he designed it just for him? We may never know. read more

Went to dinner with family last night for my husbands bday. My parents first came here 20 years ago when we first moved to Md but hadn't been back. My parents called and made a reservation for 7pm and we were seated on time at 7. It was a very busy Saturday night and they seemed short staffed as it took awhile to first get waited on and at that point we decided to give our complete order drinks, apps and entrees. The staff was friendly but very busy. Appetizers (mushroom caps) were delicious as well as the MD Crab soup. Unfortunately the entrees were not as pleasing. I had the stuffed Atlantic Cod and it, along with my veggies, were served cold in addition to the baked stuff shrimp my mother had. We had a nice family gathering but unfortunately the slower service and quality of the food was sub par. read more

I'll start with the positive aspect: the service was excellent. The mediocrity of the food, however, was really quite impressive. The trout was bland, the lemon butter was stale, the vegetables were obviously previously frozen and thus were gummy, yet served lukewarm. Pasta also flavorless and lukewarm. Strawberries in dessert cake tasted like they were from a jar. At least it wasn't too gross to get down my gullet, but that's about the nicest thing I can say about the taste. read more

A very dissapointing experience. A warm atmosphere, friendly if overworked waitress but the food was a c-. Most of the crowd in their 60's and 70's. I had the one of the specials "pot roast ", what a joke. It was sliced beef covered with dark brown gravy that tasted like out of a jar. It was a 12.95 quality (maybe) that I paid $22 for? Pot roast is also one of the easiest dishes in the world to do well - which makes the sliced tough beef all the more shocking. We asked about wines by the glass "well we have cab/merlot etc. ". So one type of each. The cab and Merlot were both way too sweet - my bride left half of hers on the table . One of the owners was clearly working the room with the regulars but showed no interest in touching base with our table. Very unimpressive food. read more

I have been to Gladchuck's a few times with a relative. The entire experience is always great. I have had the Chicken core don blu and the caeser salad. Both are very delicious. We were visiting Frederick, and our friends took us to Gladchuk Bros for a Saturday afternoon meal. The atmosphere was quiet and the decor was enjoyable. I had a selection from the specials menu, a chicken sandwich with honey mustard, which was very tasty. Others at our table enjoyed their meals also. The service person was very friendly and informative as to what was on the menu. The service from the kitchen was somewhat slow. Discovered this place by accident. Stopped by for lunch on a whim. Very happy with our choice. The place is lovely inside, very cozy, cute and clean, has real personality. Portions were generous and the flavors well balanced. my wife had the German platter and couldn't have been happier. The crowd was indeed older, but I thought that helped with the charm of the place. My wife and I had received a gift certificate for Gladchuk Bros last winter, and finally decided to stop in when she was asked to scout the place for a business dinner. We had been meaning to go for a while, but always ended up picking another place. The outside of the building reminds me of a cottage, and comes across as warm and inviting. The inside is similar, though a little more dated. It seems as though they cater to an older crowd, as we were the youngest couple in there by about 15 years (just an observation, not a critique). The service was very friendly, but the charm wore off throughout the meal as we found they were not very attentive or efficient. The bread was fresh and tasty, but our salads were mediocre at best (caesar dressing was too sweet). For dinner, I ordered the Veal German with red cabbage and spätzle; my wife got the crab stuffed cod. The veal was smothered in an overly-thickened "rich brown sauce" with too many onions and peppers tossed in. The spätzle (which I love, and part of the reason I ordered this dish) was over-cooked and not seasoned at all. The red cabbage was over-sweetened. As always, the wife and I traded bites...hers seemed better, but not great. She thought the fish was cooked well but under-seasoned,and that the stuffing was light on crab and over-worked. I also ordered an old-fashioned with dinner, which was rail whiskey (not bourbon) over cherries. Beyond the bread, I don't think I can say that anything was really good, though the prices would lead you to believe otherwise. We really wanted to like this place, but don't have any reason to go back. read more
