Saturday evening dinner while in the area. Parked the next block over and walked in. We don't have reservations but we were given a tip to come around 6:30pm for a table of 2. We took a table in the rear enclosed patio area near the bar. To start we ordered the meatball sliders. Two come with an order and they were good. I liked the toasted slider rolls, the tangy sauce and the spiciness of the meatball. Recommend cutting it in half to eat it without it flying out of the roll. Overall a good start. I ordered the gnocchi primavera which really wasn't in the traditional sense - as the vegetables were puréed together into an orange sauce. Had a good flavor and was served with burrata. Starters and entrees came out very close to each other which wasn't a bad thing. We also added a margherita pizza to share which looked weird - but tasted great. Nice crisp to the crust and thin. I usually think of a doughier crust with this kind of pizza but still good. Dessert was the fudge cake - rich in flavor, adding a coffee. Overall - would have loved to sit inside and get that experience but still good considering we didn't have a reservation. I've been eating at Nido's/Cucina Masi for 33 years, and sadly it is not what it used to be. My meal was bland. I ordered the veal massi. The shrimp were cooked perfectly, however the veal was soggy and chewy. Despite it being prime summertime for vegetables, the tomatoes and asparagus were pale, flavorless, and hard. The mushrooms seemed boiled, not sautéed, and had a saline, canned taste. The entire dish was swimming in a wine sauce that made it seem like I was eating slippery noodle soup with a fork. The head hostess/general manager became hostile, defensive and combative when I communicated that my meal wasn't up to par. She was adamant that everything was fresh. I was shocked to have been treated in such a way after being a loyal patron for decades. I will be taking my business to Il Porto, Manalu, and Ricci's. read more

I think this is one of those places that people don't know about in downtown but a great spot with a cozy outdoor seating in the back - the food is solid- I don't think the pasta is homemade but I enjoyed everything we ordered. We really enjoyed the Cristina pizza and refreshing orange crush! The bread is that crispy thin crust with a warm soft inside accompanied with homemade whipped butter. We came in on a Friday night before a wedding event and I would definitely suggest reservations. It was rather busy! Thankfully they took our name and number down and we could walk around for a bit until they called. We sat down and our waiter was awesome and friendly. My husband and I both had chicken dishes and would have loved for the chicken breast to have been cutlets. I felt like for the price we paid, chicken parm or chicken piccata shouldn't be that thick. read more

Cucina Massi us beautiful located in downtown Frederick. The restaurant appears to be in a former residential home. For your awareness, they only accept reservations of 10 or more in your party. There wasn't a wait when we went since it was a weeknight. The server was very friendly and immediately sat us at a nice table located in the front room. Our server was very attentive and polite. They serve complimentary bread and butter at your table (traditional Italian sliced bread). The decorations and devour is very quaint and what you might expect form a small Italian restaurant. Photos on the wall, art, and playing cards on the ceiling :) We ordered carbonara and spaghetti with meatballs. The food came out pretty fast and was nice and hot. The meatballs were nice and soft hike also very flavorful. The carbonara was very creamy but did need a bit of salt. For dessert we had the homemade tiramisu and chocolate fudge cake (all of their desserts are homemade and some made daily). The tiramisu isn't a traditional one as it's more like a cake consistency rather than soaked in coffee (doesn't have a coffee taste). But they were certainly not frozen and I would have the cake again. Overall, I really enjoy yes our dinner there and would come back anytime! read more

We were in Frederick to see the Carroll Creek Lighted Sailboats and stumbled upon Massi through Google--what a perfect find. The moment we walked in, the staff made us feel welcome. Everyone was friendly, attentive, and genuinely warm. The restaurant itself feels like an old house converted into a cozy dining space, giving it a relaxed, family-dinner vibe that's hard to find these days. The food? Incredible. They had fried calamari on the menu, but we asked if they could grill it instead--and they happily did. It came out perfectly tender and delicious. Great location in the middle of downtown but little parking, so find the garage before making your way. The calamari had a good breading, not too heavy with a good crisp, while the bruschetta was soggy - seemed like it was too watery and had strong garlic notes that I wasn't a fan of. The shrimp in the scampi were a good size and had a good flavor, while the meat sauce was average, nothing too special. What a lovely gem in the heart of downtown Frederick! The weather was nice so we asked to be seated on the patio out back....which is really an enclosed patio with windows that open. It has its own bar and plenty of seating and you can seethe brick path which is exploding with flowering vines and flowers. We could see heaters so it looks like it's still an option even if it's not so warm outside. The main restaurant is very elegant and peaceful while the back is causal and comfortable. The Aperol Spritz sangria was yummy and refreshing! The eggplant rollatini was divine! I had the veal piccata and my friend had the capellini caprese. The veal was fork tender and the lemon caper sauce was just the right touch of lemon. The capellini dish was wonderful! Service was prompt, friendly and professional. Headed out to Fire and Ice this past Saturday without much of a plan. Went to a local brewery and then our small group decided we needed some real food. Every place was packed! We went to Cucina Massi and we were told a 30-45 minute wait for a table. No problem, we said, may we wait at the bar? The front bar doesn't have any space but "we do have a back bar that is available", she said. Back bar?? We didn't know there was a back bar area! After a quick walk down a back alley, reminiscent of a small European village, we were welcomed at the back bar and wow! What a cool little area (enclosed and heated!). We quickly sat down and the staff was super accommodating and incredibly friendly! They were able to squeeze us in to an open table and we commenced with a lovely bottle of Cabernet and appetizers! We ordered Arancini and beef carpaccio. We absolutely LOVED their version of Arancini, which had small bits of ground beef (or was that meatball pieces?! ) truly delish! The carpaccio was super tasty but the portion of meat could have been a smidge larger, unless you are looking for a single serving appetizer. For mains, hubby and I split the Veal piccata, which was cooked perfectly our friends ordered meatball sliders, lasagna (huge portion) and spaghetti carbonara. EVERYTHING was prepared perfectly, and served piping hot! Not an easy feat with a super packed restaurant. I would order all of this again!! Pricing was very reasonable. We had a party of five with a bottle of wine, 6-beers and an espresso martini.. all in with tip, just over $200. Kudos to the manager (and superb waitstaff) for being so very respectful and accommodating for our group, truly appreciate your kindness and next time we will book a reservation ahead of time!! Friendly service, fresh bread and a great view. Went early on a Saturday night, sat by the window and had a great view of east Patrick street. The shrimp cocktail was delicious, however the arancini came out almost cold which was disappointing. For the entree's, I feel they skimped on the prosciutto for my saltimbocca and the sauce was just ok. The penne black and blue was delicious, highly recommend. They give you bread with your dinner as well, which was hot and fresh. Not shown was the dessert we had, I always get tiramisu at every Italian place in Frederick to see who has the best. Unfortunately here the tiramisu was just ok, however, the chocolate chip cookie cake was BOMB. You should definitely get that. 3.5 rating for me, but would like to go back and try more soon. read more

When you are in the mood for Italian food, well, you have to answer that call. However, as a fan of the "Big Bang Theory," I was disappointed that there were no hot dogs cut up in the pasta (kidding)! 1. The meatballs were the right mix of sauce and meat. Yum. 2. The tiramisu floated off the plate and disappeared. Light and airy, with the right amount of espresso on top! 3. The pasta was perfect, not squishy just al dente. Everything was prepared just right. I will say that their Marinara was perfect. Big pieces of tomato, onion and garlic. The right mix and consistency in my book! Another add to our list of places we will return to visit! read more

We really like the food and service here. I had been looking around town for a good pork chop and have eaten that here twice. Excellent moist chop with potatoes as a side as well as spinach (not a fan of spinach). My wife had excellent ravioli which I tasted The only downside here is that's it's noisy unless you get on the patio - like can't hear your dinner companion without speaking up - then of course everyone speaks up and away we go. On a recent Wednesday night with 70 percent of tables occupied it was noisy - when the place is full it's really noisy. read more

We were going to Frederick to see a show at the Weinberg theater and Cucina Massi was recommended by a friend for a pre theater dinner. They don't take reservations, but told us of we get there by 5, we would have no problem getting seated. Good advice, because by 5:30 every table was taken. Our server was excellent, she knew the menu well, understood food allergies and helped us navigate the smaller menu ( I personally love when a restaurant doesn't try too do much, but has a variety of what they do best to please every pallet). 2 of our diners had different veal dishes, which they loved. Another dinner had pasta dish with a vodka sauce. I had a shrimp dish, and while the pasta, sauce and onions were delicious, the shrimp were quite chewy. I had to cut them into very small pieces to eat them. Even at that I left 2 on my plate. I WOULD go back, but would skip any dish that had shrimp. This is our second trip .. we have now been there 3 times. (To say we like it is an understatement.) We DEFINITELY preferred the service at the bar. That's just a personal opinion. The meatballs (I don't eat anyone else's meatballs) are phenomenal.. and the homemade pasta (i Don't eat carbs) My husband kept putting a linguine on my damn plate.. it was the lightest thing ever. In the mood to try something new to me, I ordered dinner from Cucina Massi. I don't get downtown very often, so I ordered this meal via Door Dash. With that said, this review is only about the food. The food made me wish that I was sitting at the restaurant enjoying the whole experience. We ordered the eggplant rollatini, cream of crab soup, pear salad, and the NY steak strip meal that came with spinach and roasted potatoes. Every single thing was delicious and felt like it was made just for me personally. The meal tasted like a home cooked meal but with the technique of someone who is accomplished in the kitchen. We went on a Friday night about 6PM. We planned to put in our name and go down the street for a drink. However, they said they could seat us then and it might be busier later. So we did our plan in reverse. We ate first, had a few drinks after dinner. Our server was really good. Super friendly, answered our questions, gave us advice, and had a bit of a sarcastic sense of humor that we love. We had a charcuterie board to start. It was actually a bit large for two people so we didn't eat it all, but it had a nice variety. 3 meats, 3 cheeses, and several other items. I had the lasagna and my wife had baked ziti. They were both above average, but not great. I love lasagna, but thought it was missing some spice/flavor. The portions were large and we brought home some of each. It's a nice atmosphere. I loved this place back when it was Nido's and have been so excited to get back and try their new "Cucina Massi". Today we had the opportunity, for happy hour and a few apps! I drank Irish Coffees cuz I'm in constant need of caffeine. My boyfriend tried three of their signature cocktails -- Italian 75, The First Blush, and the Cherry Limoncello Crush. He really liked each, but the Cherry Limoncello Crush was his favorite. For appetizers, we had the sautéed calamari, which was OK. Good flavor, just rubbery. The bread and the sauce was great, and the table next to us got it fried, which looked awesome. We also got the white pizza, which was and always has been the bomb dot com. Service was good -- the owner/GM made a point of table-touching and thanking the guests for their support, and the whole team seemed to be very aware of empty drinks and plates. And the upgrades to the venue itself were great. We sat on the patio where they had upgraded seating and tables, and plexi-glass "windows". The atmosphere is great, lots of heat lamps for chilly nights, and an overall well-done renovation. Love this place. Always have, and look forward to returning for a full meal! read more

Some friends and I were in town for a horse show and needed a place to go for dinner. We were willing to spend a little extra money, dress up a little, and have a nice meal. We were fortunate enough to get in on a Saturday night with no reservation, a table of five. The place is small, but has a beautiful ambience. They have a nice wine selection, a cocktail list, and were accommodating of our friend who is not a drinker. They have a little bit of everything on the menu from seafood, to pasta, to full-blown entrees. Several of us ordered the caprese pasta dish, one friend ordered the salmon, and one friend had meatballs as their main dish (which is an appetizer). A couple of them also added on salads. The entrees and pasta dishes had generous portion sizes. My caprese pasta dish was delicious I ate about half and was able to take half home to the hotel. We selected several desserts including tiramisu and cannolis. Our server was also the bartender. He played along with a few of the rowdier table mates and had a good working knowledge of the menu. There's a party room in the back for large groups which really interested us the next time we come to this horse show. This restaurant is a beautiful little date night spot, great for small parties, and has the space to accommodate a large group away from the main floor. It's not going to be the most inexpensive meal that you have in Frederick, but I think the price tag is well worth it.
