Ice. 14° and very windy and we are at an outdoor ice sculpture walk! They were all creative and wonderful but it was hard to get a pictures of them because I had to take my gloves off. I love how some people made signs that said ICE not wanted at the Ice Festival. Joe and I stopped at a place called Wags to get warm and a late lunch. You had to go down some steps to enter this basement bar/ restaurant. It was a toss between Fells Point meets Peabody book club. Joe was entirely intimidated. Dark, dingy, crowded with everyone from bikers, to Boomers to yuppies to kids. Luckily, a couple was getting up and we found a table. Joe actually ordered a cocktail apple cranberry whiskey, LOL. The Waitresses were scurrying around efficiently and we were able to place our order. The menu looked like bistro comfort food that I found on Yelp as we were leaving the Glass Warehouse close by. We had no idea what to expect but walking downtown Frederick on Market Street is always a pleasure. The food and the service were outstanding! Totally exceeded our expectations. The quality, quantity and value for your buck totally unexpected. And Joe went from being intimidated to inspired! Joe liked Wags so much that he left a $30 tip, which doesn't seem unusual but the bill was only $40 including drinks! On the way out I shook hands with a guy named Carlos who introduced himself as one of the owners . With daily specials and a great basement vibe, I can see why people love Wags. As for the food: the burger was just alright - but what can you expect when your meal is less than $10 per person? It honestly was perfect for the price point. The Wag Burger claimed to have a special sauce but we didn't taste it, which was fine because the burger was juicy, greasy, and hit the spot. The Philly cheese steak had a bit more flavor than the burger and was also a solid choice. Fries are fresh and made in-house, and I appreciated that you can salt them yourself and decide what toppings you might want to add. This is the perfect basement dive bar with great food and a fantastic price. Their burgers and hand cut fries are outstanding and only about $10. The burger is very plump, juicy, and flavorful. The club sandwich is also really good. Their drink prices are the best in town and the service is also top notch. It can get a little busy sometimes and it isn't an overly large place, so get there early. read more

This place is not all that. If you don't like beef, don't come here. There were ZERO chicken dishes on the menu and only a BLT as a beef alternative. The fries were greasy too and the service is not great. The weirdest part was about a side of ranch. We like ranch with our fries, so we asked for some when they came to the table. The waitress brought two small containers of ranch to the table. When the bill arrived, we were surprised to see a charge of $2.50 for "side of ranch". Really??!!? Since when do restaurants charge for ranch? Lots of other better places in Frederick to go to. read more

Wags is a great place, it's Wags! You are in a basement but that is the cool vive. Service is very good and although the menu is mostly sandwiches that's what you come here for. I popped in here to grab food to take home after Frederick night out. I had never been here before, but they had a sign outside advertising their specials. The fried fish platter caught my eye as I am a pescatarian. I went in to order, one staff member was okay and the other was very welcoming. The atmosphere was great, reminiscent of a pub, small, lively, rustic and galley shaped. After waiting 30 minutes for my one platter, paying 16.95 plus a 20% tip, my food was ready. It was brought to me and placed on the bar, dirty container, no bag, no napkins, no silverware, which is not how the previous to go order was presented. I grabbed my container and drove the 3 miles home only to sit down to eat and open the container to what is shown in the photo, very little fries and 2 small overcooked dry pieces of clearly frozen fish. After breaking one piece of fish in half, I could not eat the food. I wish that I had taken the extra hour, gone to the grocery store, and prepared the meal myself. It would have been cheaper and edible. I am extremely disappointed and will not return. Maybe this review will help someone else avoid wasting their money and ending their night hungry. read more

Very hole a hole in the wall, or in this case, in the basement. If it wasn't for yelp, we likely would not have even found the place. Its pretty dim inside too, they really went for the basement speakeasy vibe. Service was friendly- we were seated quickly and taken care of the entire time. Side note- if you have a party of more than four, you may have to split up your tables- there are no large tables available. The burgers were quite good- well seasoned, cooked to the temps we wanted. For the kids, they offered to split a regular burger for us since they didn't have a kids menu, and it was the perfect size for them. My husband and I decided to come here for lunch in a Monday because we were craving...yep you guessed it: burgers! As you may have heard, as we did, it is located in a downstairs...storefront? Basement? Pub? Doesn't matter. Walking in, it is a small, dimly lit dining and bar area. The appearance is clean and reminded me of London pubs a bit. Good for groups of 2-4. I ordered the sour cream mushroom burger, added bacon, and my husband got the double bacon cheeseburger. We also got the lettuce, tomato, onion and mayo addition as well as a side of wags fries to share (the burgers normally come with a side of potato chips). Both cooked medium. I thoroughly enjoyed my burger and all the fixings!! It tasted homemade but better. It was nicely seasoned and very juicy. My husband said he really enjoyed his burger and appreciated that the bacon was "real" as well as nicely crispy. Our server was Casey, I believe, and she is awesome! She is extremely friendly and made sure to check on us frequently whiled we dined but not overbearing. Overall a great experience and we will be back. Maybe next time we'll bring our kids! This little diamond in the rough surprised me. You have to walk down a small flight of stairs from the street like going into someone's basement. Not a huge place but still had a decent size crowd. I barely managed to get a seat at the bar. Looking at the menu it's clear they specialize in burgers, although there's still plenty of other options to pick from. Their burgers are 1/4 oz so I ordered the double cheeseburger and their homemade fries. It did not disappoint. Juicy and delicious and their fries are legit. Speaking with the owner he informed me that the burgers are made fresh at a local farm, which is great to hear. If you're in the mood for a good burger and in the area it's a must stop. Only reason for the 4 and not 5 star is because of the slow service. On our way back from a great cycling weekend over on the GAP trail. My wife found this place in a search, read the reviews, and off 70 we dashed in search of the burger and fries all other reviews rave on. It was a busy Saturday. I've never been downtown here, quite busy, wonderful hustle and energy. Parking was tough, we drove around a bit, found a roadside parking spot, fed the meter and walked. The burgers were very nice, hand formed, cooked as we ordered, simple, good bun, fresh toppings. The fries are also very good. The staff is friendly, efficient. We would certainly come back again if in the area. There are no issues with the place, the food, the prices. So why not a five? We read through the reviews, and while many said the decor was old/dated [it is]. No one, not a single person mentioned the black elephant in the room, the gloomy, dim truth of the lighting. Remember that thankfully brief period of time where every fedora wearing film school grad thought that dark = artistic...yeah like that. This would be a great place to take ; - A witness protection client - A whistleblower - A date with "a great personality" - A 50s movie monster (think about it) I didn't ask, but I can only guess this is a choice by the owner(s). It's an interesting choice and must work for their normal clientle of molemen hiding from Superman. Trust me, pictures do not reflect what it is actually like in the basement bar. The digital camera's (and autoflash) compensate in ways that our eyes cannot. Do go eat here, it's good- just be prepared to trust what you feel on your plate, and check that the person you walk out with is who you arrived with. read more

My favorite place for sure , my go to place in downtown. It's a gem of Frederick downtown!! Very affordable and friendly staff. It could be a little slower service as they are always busy, but it's totally worth it to try out. The fries and burgers are good, reasonable price. Their happy hour is very good deal from 3-7pm Monday through Saturday (love it!), especially a dollar draft beer on Monday and Tuesday. They only serve draft yuengling or bottles, but I like Yeungling anyways. read more

Me, my husband and a couple friends who frequently visit wags, visited Friday night. Our bartender Jen was extremely inattentive. We sat at the bar top and on 2 occasions waited over 15minutes to get served. She disappeared once or twice or was busy talking to other people, it was hard to get her attention. We ended up leaving after 2 drinks and opted to go somewhere else instead. I understand it was a Friday night and it was a little busy, but with 2 bartenders (one of which wouldn't serve us because she said we were Jen's customers) and a server in such a small establishment, you shouldn't have to wait 15+ minutes to get served.
