We had really high expectations of Madre going in and while most of it was good, it fell flat in certain aspects. Drinks - skip the purple milk drink and the green mezcal drink. Barely any alcohol and tasted like a milkshake for the first one and the second one had way too much ice and was watered down. It tasted like drinking a Serrano pepper. Wine selection was good and glad we made the switch. Food - the Madeline's and the pork were the standouts. Flavor was great and felt unique. The chicken liver mousse was also good and came as a large portion but nothing unlike other places we've tried . While the ceviche and agnolotti came recommended we felt both were very overpowered by a sour/tart flavor which made it seem unbalanced. We also thought the complimentary chips and dip at the start was a nice touch. We didn't try any dessert in the end (we heard the soufflé was supposed to be great) because the party next to us ordered it and it came out looking kind of sad and we wanted to cut our losses. Excellent food with inventive cocktails, great vibes, and incredible dessert. Highlights include: guava souffle, sweet potato agnolotti, truffle croqueta, and cornbread madeleine. We ordered 7 dishes + 2 desserts to share among the 4 of us, which was the perfect amount. Gotta start with the dessert first because this one really wowed us. It takes a bit of time for it to arrive from the kitchen, but trust me, it's worth it!! Love the lobster in the sweet potato agnolotti, and the truffle croqueta (comes with 4) had a lovely crust outside with deliciousness inside. The cornbread madeleine was very unique as it was made with jalapeno cornbread and didn't have the characteristic lemony flavor (that I could taste) The tile fish was a hit, even for the husband who is not a fish lover. The kurobota pork was was tender and we appreciated the quantity of pork. The market salad was refreshing, and while we appreciated the generous amount of pecorino, the overall salad was a bit underwhelming for the price. The octopus had great flavor. Lastly on the cocktails- on paper they all seemed really interesting. It delivered on the "uniqueness" but I can't say I loved the 2 I ordered- the joe dirte was really savory and you might like it you like "funky" flavors. The spherified olive shooter that it comes with was really fun and added more of the olive flavor I was looking for. The grandaddy purp came in a highball glass that was 20% cocktail and 80% egg white, no lie. I guess that's typically the volume of a cocktail with ice, but I was a bit disappointed by the volume. Flavor-wise, it tasted like coconut water and was very mild, so that was kind of a bummer as well. BUT it was beautiful, so there's that. MY NEW FAVORITE SPOT IN GREENPOINT!! It's a bit off the beaten path but absolutely worth a visit. I was sold after finding out they had cornbread Madeline's and chicken liver mouse. They were both phenomenal! You order everything at once and the kitchen courses it out for you, deciding which dishes should go together and in what order. I have to spotlight the mousse. It had this gelatin later over the top that had an acidic almost pickled taste and I loved it! And the fluke ceviche was light but full of flavor. The braised cabbage that came with the kurobuto pork was such an excellent side. I liked to cut some of the cabbage and eat that with each bite of pork. Overall the flavors were fantastic. The open kitchen was a treat as we enjoyed watching the chefs cook and expedite the dishes. The food Presentation was the highlight of the meal! Each plate was presented uniquely and had its own personality. Chicken was flavorful and juicy. The sides complimented the chicken especially the salsa verde. The grilled octopus was definitely a tease but delicious (although a tad salty for my taste). It was grilled to perfection. I didn't enjoy the sauce and requested mine without the chorizo. For dessert, both the soufflé and affogato were delicious but then again, how you can go wrong with an affogato! A gem in the Greenpoint - loved that they pride themselves in supporting local farmers. It's perfect for date night or an intimate dinner with friends. Started the course with a complimentary rutabaga soup amuse bouche - very warm, comforting, and complex in flavor. My boyfriend who doesn't even like soup, enjoyed it. Their new cocktail was so good, we ordered another round! For appetizers, the highlight was the cornbread madelines (HIGHLY recommend - the whipped honey butter is insane!). Entrees, we ordered the kurobuta pork and agnolotti (both were amazing!). Agnolotti had the perfect mix of salty and sweet from the honeynut squash and pecorino, and pork was so tender! My current favorite restaurant in Greenpoint. My GF and I always pass by the restaurant and we decided to give it a try last month, and so glad we did. They get relatively busy so I would recommend a reservation. This spot has been consistently good every time I've gotten it, make sure you try this spot ASAP!!! Food: Cornbread Madelines: These are to die for, simply put "a must order". It was pillowy, buttery, and the right texture. Easily an item we think about daily. Papas Bravas: These were good, but nothing amazing. I enjoyed them, so if I was craving potatoes as an appetizer, I would order them, otherwise easy pass. Croquetas: These were simply amazing. The portion was a little small, but it more than makes up for it in flavor. Another great option for your starter. Chicken Liver Mousse: I was surprised I like this one so much. It is definitely like a mousse so keep that in mind when ordering. It does have strong accents of hibiscus. Agnolotti: This is currently my favorite pasta dish in all of NYC so far. What I thought would be a weird mix of flavors, actually blends together to make the best pasta dish. The butternut squash is not overpowering and provides the right texture to complete the dish. The pasta was well cooked. I think about this pasta daily. Kurobuta pork: This was really amazing as well. Its a little small for an entree but makes up for it in flavor. Pot de Crème: If you love chocolate, look no further, this is the perfect dessert. Affogato: Didn't know how I'd feel about crème fraîche gelato, but it was surprisingly really well done. Not sour at all, and mixed perfectly with the espresso. MADRE's Seasonal Souffé: Our Souffé of the month was a grape flavor I believe and even though I'm not big on fruit desserts, the Souffé is too good to pass up on. I would highly highly recommend if you order any one dessert, make this your choice. Dead Beets Bleed Gold: This is my current favorite cocktail. I love mezcal, so if you do as well, this is the drink for you. I'm not a fan of beets but this drink is not overpowering in any one flavor. Atmosphere / Service: The service here was amazing. Great date night spot, but I think even better with a group of 4! There are quite a few items on the menu, and we ordered most of it to share. The entrance is a bit confusing - don't go to the main entrance where it says 'madre' since that's closed. You have to enter through the Franklin guesthouse entrance. First off, we thought the food was much better than the cocktails. We tried 4 different cocktails and none really stood out or were too sweet with strong flavors. Favorite dishes of the night: - Cornbread madeleines: while the price is $$$ for such small pieces, we all loved these warm, crisp but soft, madeleines with delicious butter. We ended up getting another round of these because they were so delectable. You get flavors of corn, cheese, jalapeno - Chicken liver mousse: small portion, but just enough for the 4 of us because you can't eat that much of this anyways. It's served with 4 pieces of bread on the plate, but they automatically gave us another serving of bread and checked in after to see if we wanted more. Its' creamy, sweet and salty. I still like the pate at Bar Bete better, but this was slightly similar in flavor profile - Sweet potato agnolotti: with chunks of lobster! the parmesean foam was just enough flavor to imitate grated cheese, but in a unique way. The pasta was cooked perfectly al dente and we all liked this dish! - Octopus: good portion and perfect char. It's a little crispy on the outside, but not rubbery or dry at all - Chicken: we were a little skeptical about getting this as a main, but even the white meat was so tender and moist. We also loved the corn side it came with. It's basically a half chicken, so each person can get a piece Would pass: - Fluke ceviche: This was way too salty and had a lot going on, which I didn't think all went well together - Guava souffle: We were suckered into getting this because we were told only 12 a night are made and there were only 6 left! For drinks, we got the other green fairy, joe dirte, grandaddy purp and each was so creative and delicious. My date loved the green fairy and reordered a couple. The food was phenomenal, we got the cornbread madeleines, black truffle croquetas, fluke ceviche, octopus and the chicken. The black truffle is not to be missed and the chicken was a very generous portion. For dessert, we got the famous guava souffle and the chai creme brulee. Took a friend here that was in town from overseas and we were not disappointed. The fluke ceviche might have been my favorite but it's hard to pick. We also got the madeleines to start and then split the octopus and the agnolotti. Of course we got the soufflé for dessert. Every dish was truly unique and excellent. The service was excellent as well. The bartender was friendly without being overbearing. The servers all knew the dishes and explained things as they arrived. And the hostesses ensured everything was good and we were sated and happy. My only slight gripe is the ambience could be a bit nicer. I can't put my finger on it exactly, but the environment just doesn't feel as nice as the food tastes. We sat at the bar, which will never be on a par with a table, but the tables appeared to be about the same. I would rate Madre four and a half stars. My wife and I dined in for dinner on a Saturday night. They seated us at the bar. Looked like they still had a handful of tables available but the service at the bar was excellent, so I'd recommend grabbing a seat at the bar if they're available. I started with a glass of a beer from Grimm while my fiancée had one of their signature cocktails. Looked like they had two or three cocktails that most patrons ordered despite a list of about a dozen signatures. They served us a complimentary serving of their soup which had a much of warm flavors. It was quite good and certainly worthy of a full serving. Next we were served the chichiroon which was the most elegant take on cheese puffs. They were so crispy and just the right amount of cheesy. I could eat easily eat $100+ of these. The following item was the croquettes served with a truffle sauce. These were rich and super delicious too. I switched from beer to cocktails with my next beverage by going with the el Sancho which one of their most popular cocktails. It was on the spicy side and quite mezcal forward. After a bit of a wait, our next course was served which was the tortelloni. It was a cheese filled pasta served with mushrooms in what I thought was a chervil broth but was actually thyme. Another savory and rich dish that I could have eaten a ton of. After finishing my cocktail, I finished up with a glass of Real Mineral Pechuaga. It was on the pricey side but the bartender provided a generous pour. It's a triple distilled mezcal in clay pots. It was quite aggressive at 54.3% ABV. Definitely a worthwhile order for mezcal fans. Our next course was the market fish which was black bass. Ot was another nicely balanced dish. The fish had a nice char and was served with perfectly fried skin. However, the portion was quite small. There were only four to five bites of fish for a dish that was priced around $30. Portions were on the smaller side but this was the only dish where the portion size was critically small. I would have preferred to have paid more for a fuller portion. They served us a delicious chocolate / coffee crema for pre-dessert. Super rich and topped with a few bits of salt to balance out the rich and thick cream / moouse. For our main dessert, we shared the soufflé which was ultra light and fluffy. It followed a trend of dishes that o could endlessly eat. The service was superb throughout the night. The restrooms were comfortable and gender neutral. Madre! We stumbled upon Madre accidentally - we were on a mission to get falafel. Although I've walked past it before, I wasn't sure what it was all about or what to expect. They've been open a whopping 5 weeks at this point so I'm glad we got in when we did... while that new car smell is still in the air. So the scoop is, Madre is affiliated with Franklin Guesthouse, (next door!), as well as The Box Hotel and Henry Norman. Sounds like they're making moves in the neighb and bringing a solid vibe along with them. The decor is modern and hella OCD which I can appreciate. I loved the food here and I really appreciate the well socially distanced dinning experience here. I really liked how attentive the staff was, especially Steven, but I took off one star for how our server made us feel rushed and all of our small plates came at the same time despite we asked to have them paced. Props to John who called me to let me know the incoming storm and moved my reservation indoors. Thank you Steve for explaining to me, over the phone, that Madre takes safety seriously and the indoors tables are more than 6ft apart from each other. My friend and I, who haven't seen each other for more than 8 months, really appreciate that we didn't have to postpone our in person catch up. The indoor environment was lovely and as promised, more than 6 ft apart from the other table. The staff took our temperature before we sat down. Covid contact tracing form needed to be filled. I also appreciate that Steven stopped by to introduce himself after I sat down. I love this kind of customer service. We need to be reminded that it's a wonderful thing to be able to dine out, interact with people, and support local businesses. The waitress was new, so she wasn't too knowledgeable about the wine list. But Steven came to her rescue and answered our questions. I know we took a while to order and I am sorry. But the waitress came by a little too often that we felt rushed. It was a stormy Wednesday night, I was not aware there's a wait outside. This is why I took off one star. We ordered a bunch of stuff to share and asked if they come pace out the orders. The waitress said sure. Unfortunately after the first plate, everything came at the same time. We were enjoying our conversation and by the time we made our way to eat, everything was cold. However, the food was really, really yummy that's the saving grace.
