While I know several other people who have enjoyed their meals here, the flavors, pacing of the meal, value, and menu descriptions made my meal less than desirable here. We ordered the fish tacos, hamachi crudo, tuna tostada, charred octopus, and Frijoles de Olla, which is their namesake tamal. I couldn't tell based on the menu descriptions how large these dishes were so I asked our server for some guidance, but these ended up being much larger than he described. We ended up with 5 dishes that we thought were small plates to be much larger, and ended up with way too much food. The hamachi crudo was so fishy I didn't want to eat it, the tamal had no flavor, and the charred octopus, while pretty tasty, took nearly an hour to hit our table, which we weren't given a heads up about. The tuna tostada was the best bite and topped with a very aromatic salsa macha I quite enjoyed. The cocktails were pretty good as well. These didn't really hold up as leftovers, so I found myself kind of disappointed so much food was wasted and that the food didn't taste very good to begin with. read more

I made a reservation for two for dinner on a weekday, and I guess I didn't really need a reservation since there were a good amount of tables available at 6:30pm on a Monday. There's a lot of bar seating and tables available, and I got to sit near the entrance (the seats are so comfy). I really appreciated how attentive our server was with refilling our waters, and I never felt any pressure to hurry up and finish / leave. We ended up staying for three hours. Between two of us, we ordered the hamachi aguachile, the guacamole, the tacos de pescado, and the pistachio tres leches. We also got tortilla chips which were large circles and I actually liked the shape a lot since I could then break it up into smaller pieces. Everything was soooo good! It is a bit more on the pricier side, but I loved the overall ambience, quality of service, and the food. I would highly recommend! read more

Really great Mexican food! We came here for Sunday lunch/brunch and had a delicious meal. The cocktails were outstanding. I had the Bonnie & Clyde and my husband had the Pepino. Both were meticulously made and beautifully presented. I don't remember the exact names of our entrees, but we cleaned our plates. They ask about food allergies, and are very good about modifying dishes accordingly. The space is new, modern, clean, with maximalist decor. The service was on the more relaxed/slower side. Our server (who was also the host and bartender) and was very kind. We'll definitely be back for dinner and cocktails. read more

Delicious! The enchiladas at brunch came with a rich sauce full of warm spices, hearty potato and carrot hash, beans, and a fried egg on top. The tortillas were soft and tasted fresh. Everything came to about $24 after tax and tip. read more

I would rate Frijoleros 3.5 stars. We had the aguachile and tuna for appetizers. Loved the aguachile -- very refreshing and tart with the green apple and yuzu flavors. The tuna dish was a great concept in theory-- thinly sliced tuna on a chicharron-- but the spicy mayo overpowered the delicate tuna flavor-wise. We also had the steak which came with 2 bean enchiladas. Steak was mediocre in terms of the quality. It had a chimichurri sauce on top which had more of a mustard taste, which overpowered the flavor. The enchiladas were undersalted and bland. The water was refilled mostly consistently but I would have appreciated if a carafe would have been left at the table for convenience. Two restrooms available. Ample seating on a weekday, making a walk in dining experience feasible. read more

Saturday quick bite... looking for someplace new and went through my "to try" list.... Always welcome a margarita so Mexican just felt right. What a pleasant surprise.. open for almost 9 months and very lowkey (I've passed a couple times without even noticing). Arrived early it was around 5pm, good crowd , tables available but opted for bar seating. Very comfortable bar, chairs were perfect and the concrete slab countertop perfect height and texture to rest my elbows on. Started of with cocktails, selected the Branzino and after seeing tacos head to the other table, had to try the fish tacos too! Everything was delicious, drinks on the higher end, but definitely mixed with love, Bartender Kevin was skilled and gracious in every manner. Also saw some grilled octopus come out to another table and mental note, I'll try that next time!!! Lowkey spot... flavorful twist on Mexican food... different from the regular comfort Mexican, definitely trendy and unique. Look forward to returning to try other items, every cocktail I tasted was made very well, and typically priced for craft cocktails (approx 18$). How how how did this place get such great reviews??!!! I am SO bummed to have gone here for my bday dinner. Drinks were very good. Skirt steak for $40 was clearly precooked. Ordered it medium rare came out well well done and cold. Grey pile of mess. Shrimps and clams extremely chewy. Hazelnut Mole had a good sauce but very little duck and it was mostly masa. Guacamole never came out. Server never checked on us, asked if we wanted more drinks, etc. Took two hours for three small plates. Server was absent and clueless about hospitality. Whatever went on at this place tonight truly sucked. 2 cocktails, 1 beer and three small plates were over $100 not including tip. read more

I'm not sure what it was that brought us to Frijoleros last week. I didn't have a reservation anywhere but wanted to go out. There are a dizzying number of options in NYC which makes a last-minute decision potentially agonizing if you have decision paralysis and/or FOMO like I do. Something in me said I needed Mexican food and, despite living in uptown Manhattan, something in me said I needed Brooklyn vibes. Call it spidey-foodie senses or call it a well-organized Google Maps, but we ended up at Frijoleros and, if I do say so myself, it was as if I successfully manifested my exact fantasy. Neither the cocktails nor the food are the main event here, they share the spotlight well and both are excellent. Tons of variety, tons of flavor, and the prices are pretty fair. The vibes are somehow both lively and chill which seems paradoxical when you write it out but vibes are not written, they are felt, so IYKYK. We came here at around 9PM on a Saturday night. We didn't have a reservation but I'd seen tables available on Resy so we tried our luck. We were seated immediately though place was probably 80-90% full. Again, couldn't have scripted it any better (I'd rather wait 15-20 minutes for a table than go show up to a relatively empty spot). We were both eager to dive into food and drink alike, so we wasted no time before looking at the cocktail menu. As folks have mentioned, there's quite a lot to choose from and all options are seemingly good ones. To start, I got the Taiyo (yuzu vodka, mango, vermouth, yellow chartreuse), a fruity martini-type drink served with a sidecar that was a little sweet and dangerously smooth. My partner got the Holy Smoke (Manojo mezcal, earl grey, peach, l'orgeat, lime) which was also an excellent sip. I then got the Pepino (mezcal, cucumber, lime & agave) with tajin because, despite all of exciting creations, sometimes a really really good marg is all you need. There were many other drinks I wish I could have tried but had I kept making my way through the menu I probably wouldn't have any memory of what I ordered and couldn't review it for you anyway. The food at Frijoleros is equally impressive. Plenty of options for folks with a range of preferences/diets (i.e., GF, DF, vegetarian, pescatarian). Most dishes are great for sharing (and sharing is recommended), aside from maybe a soup or something like that. We got a solid range of cold/hot/smaller/larger and overall it was a good amount of food. Didn't quite finish our last dish because we were full but we happily enjoyed leftovers the next day. I usually grade dishes individually but in this case it was As across the board. Eats, below: Hamachi Aguachile w/ prickly pear, strawberry, habanero, cucumber, jicama I love aguachile and this one is particularly vibrant, in color and flavor alike. I could have taken sips of this marinade straight all night - fruity and bright and a little spicy. A perfect way to start the meal and wake up the palette. Tuna w/ flour chicharron, soy-lime, macha aioli and avocado I can see why this is highly reviewed. Incredibly flavorful and umami, more filling than you might expect before it's served to you. The aioli and texture from the chicharron make the dish, though it is totally viable to eat the tuna and avocado straight and skip the chicharron should you prefer to do it that way. Gambas w/ recado negro, Mexican beurre blanc Hard to pick of favorite of the night but these are in the running. The seasoning on the shrimp was just divine and the beurre blanc was perfection with great consistency, having us both trying to extract every teensy morsel we could get out of each shell. Gorditas w/ lamb pansita negra, queso oaxaca, chile ajo nopales I hadn't tried anything like these before this meal, which are basically arepas - in this case, decked out and rich, served with a lighter, slightly spicy sauce for dipping which perfectly complemented/balanced the flavors of the gorditas. Mole Blanco y Negro w/ brussels sprouts and squash I could easily have this as my veggie side for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. All veggie, so so good. The mole was delicious, the brussels were roasted to perfection and the squash was very lightly fried and wonderfully crispy. A seasonal sensation. read more

To the detriment of everyone living in Greenpoint (I'm sorry), we must rave about this place. The cocktails were creative, expansive, outstanding and well-worth the price point. The ambience is warm and cozy and impeccably adorned. The vegetable-forward spin on Latin cuisine is so welcomed. And then we have the quesadilla with corn and fungi. My friends. Do not wait.
