Really outstanding guac, chips, and salsas. The tuna tostada and shrimp cazuela were also basically perfect. The huarache and pork shank were excellent as well, although I'd consider subbing those out next time. Would also skip dessert next visit.
The food here felt really similar to the stuff I had in Mexico City. Huevos Rancheros - plenty of flavor from the tortillas inside and from the salsa over top. Mole Almendrado - intensely spiced, with some nice floral notes, and pretty rich. The mole doesn't come with tortillas, but I chose not to get more. I wish I had, because the mole was a bit overly intense on its own. My meal came out to about $45 with tax and tip. It's a bit on the expensive side, but the food is tasty and the restaurant has a really nice, modern ambiance.
By the time I post this review, the menu will have changed probably at least a few times over, because they're always experimenting with new ingredients and bold flavors. They are quietly revolutionizing Bushwick's food scene in ways that rival a lot of the city's most acclaimed restaurants. You may have never heard of Sobre Masa but you've likely savored their tortillas. At the core of their menu is heirloom corn and all its glorious varieties. They're passionate about educating their customers on the significance of corn and the impact on Mexican cuisine. On a technical level, their tortilla factory has mastered the art of nixtamalization, producing the most pliant, earthy and delicious tortillas you've ever seen. Their commitment to heirloom corn and care and uncompromising quality really shows in every bite. I chafe at places that charge extra for chili oil or hot sauce, but here I don't mind, because their salsa mache is so good. I wish they'd go back to selling these in jars, but they sounded pretty firm on not doing that anymore. While they do always add new things to the menu, you'll still find their stellar guacamole, creative tostadas, and flan on their menu. I just spotted their chicken liver tostado newly added to their menu, and now I feel called to return. The best part is that you can likely walk in without reservations, even on weekend nights.
Current residents of Bushwick should be overjoyed because Sobre Masa is yet another gem of an eatery in their neighborhood. My friend told me about this place over a year ago and he was raving about their amazing fish tacos. The memory of those fish tacos is what drove us to go check out Sobre Masa a few days ago. What we soon found out, was that the menu changes frequently and the fish tacos were no longer on it. This was only a slight bummer, because everything we did end up having was absolutely great! The highlights for me were their guacamole (and accompanying sauces), lamb belly barbacoa, and the passionfruit/carrot juice. The guacamole was the most seasoned and flavorful guac I've ever had. No cap, no exaggeration. Some may find it on the salty side but it never crossed that line for me. The tortilla chips were perfect and strong. They won't fold under pressure and break when you go for that scoop of green goodness. A little toum, green salsa, and either red or orange sauce for some spicy kick on that chip is the way to go. If the lamb belly is on the menu, it is a must try! Pro-tip: save some of the guac and sauced to have with your lamb belly tacos and get creative. The lamb belly is juicy, flavorful, and a perfect protein to go with their delicious tortillas. The passionfruit juice is the base agua fresca for one of their alcoholic cocktails. While it may be a little pricy to some for juice, it was so refreshing, perfectly sweet, and I enjoyed ever last drop. The restaurant just has a great vibe to it. Nice lighting, not loud or noisy, friendly staff, quick service. I was blown away and will absolutely be returning.
This is the best place to get authentic Oaxaca food in New York City! The tortillas are the best I've ever had and I've been to Mexico. Service is great, ambience was top-tier. Desert was delicious!

I got a reservation around 7, but it definitely isn't needed & a walk-in is easily attainable. The restaurant is absolutely beautiful and reminds me of my time in Mexico City. This is a weird statement, but I'm obsessed with the bathroom. It's so welcoming and warm and it smells lovely. Really good job. I came with a new friend so when I saw bar seats available I immediately took them vs going for a table. While the restaurant is rich in culture, around the corner of the bar was what felt like storage or trash. Since it's a fancier place, they should consider hiding that in a closet or in the back versus next to a bar. What got me here is watching a TikTok talk about how & how long they make their corn tortillas. So when I learned happy hour is until 7pm & it includes a free steak taco, I was very excited. Unfortunately it was hard and not good. I can do simple items when the seasoning is there. But it wasn't. Extremely disappointing. Should add an avocado crema or something. We ended up only getting guacamole & the tuna tostado. The guacamole was big and a great portion. The tuna tostado was very tasty and a nice redemption. But I definitely want to come back & try other items before a fair review. Also just noting there was only one waiter and one bartender. The bartender additionally acted as a waiter and the waiter also acted as a hostess. It's a big place, so was a bit surprised they didn't have a 3rd person.
A friend and I came in for Sunday Brunch recently. The space is well decorated and feels welcoming. We were welcomed by one of the owners at our table, explaining their commitment to authentic flavors, celebration of rich heritage, and support to empowering farmers. We started off with the vanilla conchitas. Light, fluffy, and perfectly sweet. For our entrees we had the chilaquiles with avocado. The chips were high quality and flavorful, while the toppings were spicy, creamy, and delicious. The Sala Macha that seems a combo of salsa and chili crisp to me, was absolutely killer. They sell it by the jar and I took one home with me! Definitely want to return and try their dinner menu!
Sobre Masa is a bit out of the way but I've been meaning to visit this location since their original location closed by the Williamsburg bridge. I had the opportunity to dine here several times and each time has been amazing! You would think the first time was a fluke, so I came by again. From December to April, they updated the menu, which I value. To me, it means they're always experimenting with new ingredients and ideas. For my most recent visit, we splurged a bit since we were celebrating an anniversary. They have a lovely window ceiling that allows for natural light to fall through. In the evening, dim lights are lit up for ambiance. We ordered roasted oysters, mole alemandrado, arrachera skirt steak, chicken liver tostada, and the chocolate cake. Roasted oysters came out first and were delicious and smoky. Mole alemandrado itself was fantastic. The broccoli rabe was nicely charred. I wish this was more of an entre. Arrachera skirt steak was done medium rare, served with tortilla. As much as I loved the steak by itself, I didn't enjoy the pairing with the tortilla as much as I thought. Compared to my last visit, I had the chicken served with polenta, and that complimented each other well. Chicken liver tostada - we were still a bit hungry so we ordered this to top of our night. I was amazed by how smoothe the pate was. This only came as one piece. As for drinks, it was a combo of alcohol and non alcoholic drinks of the Toronja, Cocktail of the day, Chinampa, No es in daiquiri, and a shot of mezcal. We sat by the bar so we got to see all our drinks being made. We had an amazing bartender who did his magic in front of us. He was knowledgeable and gave great recommendations. Lastly, we concluded with Rika's chocolate cake, which wasn't over empowering but provided the deep chocolate flavor satisfaction you needed to end the night.
Would so highly recommend trying out this spot. Felt off the beaten path for sure but definitely worth making the trek. We got the guacamole to start which was delicious. They also provided an array of salsas/sauces for the chips and tacos. The cocktails were also amazing (they have amazing tequila selection). For entrees, we got the skirt steak and carnitas which were both amazing. Personally I enjoyed the steak more but my husband thought the carnitas were phenomenal. We also got the chocolate mil hojas which was delicious. It was pretty empty when we went so we got a lot of attention from the servers and a lot of recommendations. They were so nice!
This place is located in the cut in Brooklyn. Back streets and hidden. Very cute and cozy inside. Dimly lit. Pleasurable ambiance. Our server Araseli was very knowledgeable of the menu. We just happened to stop in for happy hour which is from 5:30pm-7pm. There wasn't much of a variety of drinks to chose from on the happy hour menu. Some wine. One cocktail. And beer. We tried the cocktail. It was made with a in house fermented agave. It was just average. Totally not worth $12. The chips and guacamole was pretty good. First set of chips tasted a little stale. Second batch more fresh. We also had salsa on the side which when brought out was a little flight. They included: Salsas: White - garlic toum aioli Green - tomatillo and Serrano Red - chili Morrita Orange - chili de árbol They all were delicious! My friend ordered some wings. They were hot and I didn't really care for them. Wouldn't order them again. However, I would like to come back for dinner at some point. They have some Interesting choices on the menu.
I found this place on the recent Eater's list and it sure did not disappoint. It's super convenient to get to if you live by the L train as it was on the same block as the Morgan L train station. I've never been in this neighborhood before. It's on the quieter and emptier side. We came on a Friday night at around 6:30pm and unintentionally but fortunately landed on happy hour. Happy hour included cheaper eats, but not drinks. The restaurant was decorated with art made by the owner. Apparently a lot of the material was from Mexico! We really liked the guacamole and the house salsas. The whipped garlic was good on everything. The queso was interesting in a light tomato sauce. The wings were ok, doused in a mole sauce. I didn't think the wings were anything to write home about. We shared the skirt steak which was perfectly cooked and seasoned with grilled leeks and onions and fresh cilantro. We were so full but still wanted to try the tres leche. The ambiance was so nice. I appreciated that it wasn't too loud or busy. And given how well the food was done, I would definitely come again to try the other options on the menu.
I love this spot! Lovely, vibey Mexican... We got bunch of different family style meal and shared all with friends, such great comfort foods. They brought some salsa and chips. We got chicken wings, oyster mushrooms, shishito peppers, ceviche and some meatballs with tortillas to make tacos. I love the shishito peppers, ceviche and the dessert- flan was the best dessert I've got in NY. The chicken was nice, with some soury lemony taste, we enjoyed it. The meatballs are a bit heavy for my taste, and mushrooms were unsalted. But with the flan, they finished successfully!
The place has a casual feel to it. The service was outstanding. The food quality was great and everything was cooked perfectly. The empanada was pretty bland. The flan was incredible.

Ambiance/Atmosphere My second time here and it did not disappoint. The space is genuinely cute and beautiful, warm and inviting in a way that makes you want to linger. Appetizers The tuna crudo is amazing. Bright, clean, and easily one of the standout dishes of the night. Mains The fish over corn grits was excellent, and the pork shank stole the show. It was so tender and delicious, the kind of dish that falls apart with just a fork. Drinks Nice variety on both the alcoholic and non-alcoholic side. The jamaica was a great pick and a refreshing non-alcoholic option, always appreciated when a place puts real thought into that part of the menu. Dessert The coconut custard and the flan were both delicious. A perfect way to close out the meal. Service Amazing across the board. Attentive, warm, and it made the whole experience feel effortless. Verdict Five stars, no hesitation. Delicious food, beautiful space, and service that hits every mark. This is now a spot I'll keep coming back to. read more

Cute Mexican tapas place. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. We had a reservation for a table and were seated quickly. We were able to order quickly. Mostly small dishes and chill vibes. My favorite dish would probably be the lamb belly and the flan. We also had a few other dishes including the chips and guac and tuna tostada sauces and mole almendrado, but the lamb belly was by far the best. The flan was also delicious, the texture, the creaminess and the sweetness were perfect. read more
Grabbed a same-day reservation for dinner on a Friday and had a fantastic meal here. I tried: + Pasión comiteca cocktail - perfect, my favorite of the two cocktails we ordered + Naked in bushwick cocktail - also excellent + Apricot cardamom agua Fresca - good flavor but was a little too viscous + Guacamole - perfect + Fluke Aguachile - the best thing we ate + Tuna tostada - excellent + Lamb belly barbacoa - excellent + Chocolate crémeux - yummy but was hoping for more cake! Upon entering, we were struck by the decor; very cute and felt soothing. It was quite hot near the bar as we made our way to the back, but it cooled down once we were seated. The service was decent, though our waiter seemed a bit confused when we requested separate checks and receipts. Overall, the food was delicious and far better than the desserts. I'm curious if their menu changes often, as I'd like to try other items. read more

I just went to Sobre Masa for a group dinner. Right from the start, the vibe was a bit weird. Our reservation was for 7 people at 6:30 pm on a Sunday, but one of our friends was feeling under the weather and we didn't think she would be able to join. When we arrived 10 mins before our reservation, we let the host know it would actually be 6 of us. She gave a bit of an attitude about this but did seat us and we assumed it would be fine. After we had ordered drinks and food, the server mentioned that it was "family style" - which would have been nice to know before ordering, if true. We all got our own things for the most part except for the shared guacamole and salsas for the table. We probably should have ordered slightly more and planned to share things, but I'm not sure how feasible that would have been for our group with various dietary restrictions. However we would have appreciated the server's guidance in this regard, or even notes on the menu. Nothing actually seemed portioned or served as family style or even easily shareable. At this point, our 7th friend arrived (to our surprise also). This was about 30 mins into the reservation while we were still waiting on most of the food to come out. The host and our server both seemed exasperated. We were apologetic and asked if a seat could be added, as the restaurant was nearly empty besides us (1 4-top, 2 2-tops, and 1 at the bar) and there were plenty of seats. And of course our table had originally been set for 7 so we figured it wouldn't put them out terribly. They acted like it was a terrible inconvenience but did reluctantly give her a chair and a place setting. The guacamole, chips, and salsa were great. As well, we really enjoyed the cocktails and non alcoholic grapefruit cocktail. The huevos rancheros, milpa salad, shrimp dish, wings, trout, and chilaquiles were all tried by the group, and we enjoyed everything. Of course, the tortillas are very good and we got a few side orders (2 tortillas per order) for the table. Towards the end of the meal, one of my friends went to the restroom and overheard the staff speaking negatively about our table and our friend for coming late/ not ordering more (she only got an order of chips, which is admittedly weird, but the rest of our group more than made up for her with food and alcohol.) Overall, the staff was unfriendly and continually gave the impression that we were something of a burden. $350 later we were left hungry and uncomfortable with how the staff behaved. This might be a better choice for date night- the food and drinks are great and the interior is super cute. I wanted to love this place, but I wouldn't go back. read more

Disclaimer: I wanted to give 5 stars but my partner insisted I take a star off for the prices, and I agree it's a tad on the expensive side. For dinner for 3, including 2 drinks, the bill was $200+tip. (and we only ordered two entrees) Coming from California, we felt this was hefty for even gourmet mexican food. In terms of the food, everything we tried was delicious. The tortilla chips tasted fresh and hearty, the guac was perfectly smooth and flavorful. The salsas were fun to try. We loved the queso asado appetizer and felt the portion size was fair. However, for the flutas de mole, it seemed like a poor value to get two small flutas for $14. They were good, but nothing to write home about. Our entrees were the carnitas and the skirt streak. The proteins were both cooked perfectly and we found them very tasty. I would not say that the plating or the quantity measured up to the price point, and please note that when they bring tortillas for the table or refill the tortilla chips, this will incur an additional charge. The drinks were not very strong, but standard NY pricing. Service was quick and attentive. I have nothing negative to say about the staff. Location seems a bit mysterious for an upscale restaurant, as the immediate neighborhood does not feel super upscale, and there are hardly any businesses around. You feel like you're walking through a backstreet to find the entrance to this restaurant. My overall opinion is that the food you get at Sobre Masa is quite good and definitely close to a fine dining level, but it doesn't quite live up to its price point. I can understand the hype behind this place, but found that I would rather try a different mexican restaurant in the future than come back here. A top highlight of my first trip to NY! We knew we had to come to this Michelin starred restaurant featuring my favorite cuisine. I live in Chicago and spend much of my time in Pilsen eating the most authentic Mexican food, so I was curious how Sobre Masa would elevate their offerings in a way that would garner such an honor. Totally deserved. The service, provided by an absolute GEM, Sunna, was superior. He was warm, fun, and most especially, excellent in providing guidance from beginning to end. He did not steer us wrong. We started with beautifully crafted drinks, one being NA, followed by the Chicken Liver Tostadas. The uniqueness of the flavors was ridiculous--we even had a moment of silence in deep appreciation for what we just experienced. This was followed by a vegetable side dish I can only dream about. It was fresh corn on the cob, which was sectioned into chunks and prepared with a vinegary and spicy home blend that literally bedazzled my taste buds. I doubt there is any way I can ever recreate this at home, so I will just have to return to NY at some point and hope it's on the menu. Our entree was shared between my sisters and I-- Pork Shank, carnitas made in the style of Michoacán, with pickled red onions and cilantro. My only concern was how could three sisters only order one entree? We were assured it was more than enough, and Sunna was correct. We barely finished it. When I say I've never eaten a more delicious piece of meat...really no words for it. The meat fell off the bone and was pure heaven. Seasoned simply, it seemed, to bring out the very best flavor. Wowww. Take note of the pictures lol. Finally came time for dessert and we had just enough tummy left to enjoy three different choices. Hands down favorite was the flan. It has now ruined me for flan anywhere else. Sheer perfection. We can't wait to come again to NY and make this the last stop of our trip. I will add we came dressed nicely, but somewhat casually. A warm easy vibe. We were greeted with enthusiasm and felt taken care of from Hello to Goodbye. So well done!! read more

Sobre Masa has an incredible amount of potential, its just not all the way there based on what I had. It was a mix of incredible dishes and ones that just didnt cut it. The good: Everything there is made fresh and you can taste it. The fluke and scallops were incredible. The fluke ceviche looks more like a crudo but brings all the best flavors of ceviche. The scallops are buttery and paired with a spicy green salsa that goes well with fresh tortillas on the side. The drinks are hit or miss. They use a lot of ingredients I wasn't familiar with so I would suggest getting to know your bartender so you end up with something you'll like The not so good: So the papitas were tasty but a lot of them ended up coming out soggy. Soggy chips are not fun obviously. I think they have just not gone out from the kitchen quick enough. The wings. I just didnt enjoy the flavor. I didnt finish them. The verdict: Id normally give this place 3.5 stars but considering the generally high level of execution on their dishes and the fact I couldnt have 2 of their signature dishes (mole & al pastor tacos). have been looking forward to trying this spot for a while and very happy to have experienced it. had a reservation for 8 pm on a Sunday evening of a long weekend as I heard it can be difficult to get a table, but it was relatively empty so think that it may not be necessary if i go again in the future. opted for the para las abejas cocktail even though im not a huge cocktail person i thought it was great! not too sweet, floral, and very pretty. it was mild enough to not overpower the other flavors in the dishes. we wanted the fluke ceviche but they were unfortunately out so we opted for the octopus salad instead. very delicious. fresh and tart i honestly thought it was great just on its own with a bit of avocado and crunchy tortilla. they provide an assortment of sauces/salsas which added a nice kick if you desired. for my main i opted for the skirt steak which comes with fresh tortillas. this was really really good. great flavor, great seasoning, meat wasn't too fatty and decently marbled, and soft. i love onions so the grilled onions on the side were appreciated as well. i know the chefs here are former pastry chefs so though i intended to try a postre i was unfortunately too full. hoping to be back soon for brunch where i can try something then! if i could rate this spot out of 10 id give it an 8 or 9. the food itself was pretty much a 10 but i felt the service was too fast/a bit cold and the meal felt a tad rushed for my liking. ill also say that while some parts of the restaurant were nice the decor wasn't as cohesive as i had anticipated. nonetheless, worth coming back for! read more
Another top 5 meals this year for me! I cannot believe this isn't Michelin Star yet as of this date - but everything from the cocktails to the meal was so on point and so interesting. Our server was excellent, not only attentiveness, but patience with a larger crowd with some older folks. They knew the menu so well and made excellent recommendations. The paloma was excellent. Im a sucker for a paloma and it was tasty. The whole table got a sip and agreed. The handmade tortillas here are outrageous. The chips and guac were stellar. Such a round and delicious fresh avocado flavor and you could add from a variety of hot salsas to get it the way you want on the bite. YUM. The mushroom and cheese quesadilla was so good. Very meaty and flavorful mushrooms with lots of soft cheese. The vinegar based sauce was a stellar move. I got the barbacoa tacos. WOW. The warm blue corn tortillas, the warm and mildly spicy barbacoa - JUST WOW. The green sauce was so sharp and a tasty contrast. I didn't get a picture, but the flan was the best thing I think i've ever had for dessert. The tasting note was "vanilla." That's it. And boy did it deliver. The silky soft yet full of custardy texture with the strong vanilla - we ate it too fast to get the picture. I would go back any day or time of the week. read more
Excellent all around: drinks, meal, concept ( coffee shop/ restaurant), vibe. Sobre masa impresses as a cute coffee shop when you first walk in, but keep walking back to a chill space offering really good food and drinks! They have an excellent mezcal selection. I opted for the Sana Sana, which is a unique drink with a great smoky flavor. For dinner we shared tacos and I really enjoyed the alambre, which was chicken, onion, peppers with melted cheese. The tortillas were super fresh and tasty. Everything was flavorful. read more

This could be a 5 on the flan alone. Easily the best flan I've ever had and frankly it isn't close. In fact, it redefined what flan should be for me Servers were great. Helpful with recommendations and clarifications Chips and salsa were fantastic Chicken wings were great Pollo con polenta was incredible Bathrooms were pristine and restaurant was clean and comfy Outstanding stop.
