However the guy at the bar who "served" us said he refused to split the check between me and my friend and the reason being is we wouldn't tip him . The food here felt really similar to the stuff I had in Mexico City. Huevos Rancheros - plenty of flavor from the tortillas inside and from the salsa over top. Mole Almendrado - intensely spiced, with some nice floral notes, and pretty rich. The mole doesn't come with tortillas, but I chose not to get more. I wish I had, because the mole was a bit overly intense on its own. My meal came out to about $45 with tax and tip. By the time I post this review, the menu will have changed probably at least a few times over, because they're always experimenting with new ingredients and bold flavors. They are quietly revolutionizing Bushwick's food scene in ways that rival a lot of the city's most acclaimed restaurants. You may have never heard of Sobre Masa but you've likely savored their tortillas. At the core of their menu is heirloom corn and all its glorious varieties. They're passionate about educating their customers on the significance of corn and the impact on Mexican cuisine. On a technical level, their tortilla factory has mastered the art of nixtamalization, producing the most pliant, earthy and delicious tortillas you've ever seen. Their commitment to heirloom corn and care and uncompromising quality really shows in every bite. I chafe at places that charge extra for chili oil or hot sauce, but here I don't mind, because their salsa mache is so good. I wish they'd go back to selling these in jars, but they sounded pretty firm on not doing that anymore. While they do always add new things to the menu, you'll still find their stellar guacamole, creative tostadas, and flan on their menu. I just spotted their chicken liver tostado newly added to their menu, and now I feel called to return. Current residents of Bushwick should be overjoyed because Sobre Masa is yet another gem of an eatery in their neighborhood. My friend told me about this place over a year ago and he was raving about their amazing fish tacos. The memory of those fish tacos is what drove us to go check out Sobre Masa a few days ago. What we soon found out, was that the menu changes frequently and the fish tacos were no longer on it. This was only a slight bummer, because everything we did end up having was absolutely great! The highlights for me were their guacamole (and accompanying sauces), lamb belly barbacoa, and the passionfruit/carrot juice. The guacamole was the most seasoned and flavorful guac I've ever had. No cap, no exaggeration. Some may find it on the salty side but it never crossed that line for me. The tortilla chips were perfect and strong. They won't fold under pressure and break when you go for that scoop of green goodness. A little toum, green salsa, and either red or orange sauce for some spicy kick on that chip is the way to go. If the lamb belly is on the menu, it is a must try! Pro-tip: save some of the guac and sauced to have with your lamb belly tacos and get creative. The lamb belly is juicy, flavorful, and a perfect protein to go with their delicious tortillas. The passionfruit juice is the base agua fresca for one of their alcoholic cocktails. While it may be a little pricy to some for juice, it was so refreshing, perfectly sweet, and I enjoyed ever last drop. The restaurant just has a great vibe to it. What got me here is watching a TikTok talk about how & how long they make their corn tortillas. So when I learned happy hour is until 7pm & it includes a free steak taco, I was very excited. Unfortunately it was hard and not good. I can do simple items when the seasoning is there. But it wasn't. Extremely disappointing. Should add an avocado crema or something. A friend and I came in for Sunday Brunch recently. The space is well decorated and feels welcoming. We were welcomed by one of the owners at our table, explaining their commitment to authentic flavors, celebration of rich heritage, and support to empowering farmers. We started off with the vanilla conchitas. Light, fluffy, and perfectly sweet. For our entrees we had the chilaquiles with avocado. The chips were high quality and flavorful, while the toppings were spicy, creamy, and delicious. The Sala Macha that seems a combo of salsa and chili crisp to me, was absolutely killer. Sobre Masa is a bit out of the way but I've been meaning to visit this location since their original location closed by the Williamsburg bridge. I had the opportunity to dine here several times and each time has been amazing! You would think the first time was a fluke, so I came by again. From December to April, they updated the menu, which I value. To me, it means they're always experimenting with new ingredients and ideas. For my most recent visit, we splurged a bit since we were celebrating an anniversary. They have a lovely window ceiling that allows for natural light to fall through. In the evening, dim lights are lit up for ambiance. We ordered roasted oysters, mole alemandrado, arrachera skirt steak, chicken liver tostada, and the chocolate cake. Roasted oysters came out first and were delicious and smoky. Mole alemandrado itself was fantastic. The broccoli rabe was nicely charred. I wish this was more of an entre. Arrachera skirt steak was done medium rare, served with tortilla. As much as I loved the steak by itself, I didn't enjoy the pairing with the tortilla as much as I thought. Compared to my last visit, I had the chicken served with polenta, and that complimented each other well. Chicken liver tostada - we were still a bit hungry so we ordered this to top of our night. I was amazed by how smoothe the pate was. This only came as one piece. As for drinks, it was a combo of alcohol and non alcoholic drinks of the Toronja, Cocktail of the day, Chinampa, No es in daiquiri, and a shot of mezcal. Went to Sobre Masa last night as a group of 5 and we had the BEST time. The host was so sweet, the food and drinks were amazing, and our waiter Sana (I hope I'm remembering their name correctly) made the whole experience so much fun, giving us drink and food recommendations and chatting with our whole table. We were the last group in there while they were actively closing up for the night and everyone was so courteous and sweet to us, despite us potentially overstaying our welcome the slightest bit. I found this place on the recent Eater's list and it sure did not disappoint. It's super convenient to get to if you live by the L train as it was on the same block as the Morgan L train station. I've never been in this neighborhood before. It's on the quieter and emptier side. We came on a Friday night at around 6:30pm and unintentionally but fortunately landed on happy hour. Happy hour included cheaper eats, but not drinks. The restaurant was decorated with art made by the owner. Apparently a lot of the material was from Mexico! We really liked the guacamole and the house salsas. The whipped garlic was good on everything. The queso was interesting in a light tomato sauce. The wings were ok, doused in a mole sauce. I didn't think the wings were anything to write home about. We shared the skirt steak which was perfectly cooked and seasoned with grilled leeks and onions and fresh cilantro. We were so full but still wanted to try the tres leche. The ambiance was so nice. I appreciated that it wasn't too loud or busy. A top highlight of my first trip to NY! We knew we had to come to this Michelin starred restaurant featuring my favorite cuisine. I live in Chicago and spend much of my time in Pilsen eating the most authentic Mexican food, so I was curious how Sobre Masa would elevate their offerings in a way that would garner such an honor. Totally deserved. The service, provided by an absolute GEM, Sunna, was superior. He was warm, fun, and most especially, excellent in providing guidance from beginning to end. He did not steer us wrong. We started with beautifully crafted drinks, one being NA, followed by the Chicken Liver Tostadas. The uniqueness of the flavors was ridiculous--we even had a moment of silence in deep appreciation for what we just experienced. This was followed by a vegetable side dish I can only dream about. It was fresh corn on the cob, which was sectioned into chunks and prepared with a vinegary and spicy home blend that literally bedazzled my taste buds. I doubt there is any way I can ever recreate this at home, so I will just have to return to NY at some point and hope it's on the menu. Our entree was shared between my sisters and I-- Pork Shank, carnitas made in the style of Michoacán, with pickled red onions and cilantro. My only concern was how could three sisters only order one entree? We were assured it was more than enough, and Sunna was correct. We barely finished it. When I say I've never eaten a more delicious piece of meat...really no words for it. The meat fell off the bone and was pure heaven. Seasoned simply, it seemed, to bring out the very best flavor. I just went to Sobre Masa for a group dinner. Right from the start, the vibe was a bit weird. Our reservation was for 7 people at 6:30 pm on a Sunday, but one of our friends was feeling under the weather and we didn't think she would be able to join. When we arrived 10 mins before our reservation, we let the host know it would actually be 6 of us. She gave a bit of an attitude about this but did seat us and we assumed it would be fine. After we had ordered drinks and food, the server mentioned that it was "family style" - which would have been nice to know before ordering, if true. We all got our own things for the most part except for the shared guacamole and salsas for the table. We probably should have ordered slightly more and planned to share things, but I'm not sure how feasible that would have been for our group with various dietary restrictions. However we would have appreciated the server's guidance in this regard, or even notes on the menu. Nothing actually seemed portioned or served as family style or even easily shareable. At this point, our 7th friend arrived (to our surprise also). This was about 30 mins into the reservation while we were still waiting on most of the food to come out. The host and our server both seemed exasperated. We were apologetic and asked if a seat could be added, as the restaurant was nearly empty besides us (1 4-top, 2 2-tops, and 1 at the bar) and there were plenty of seats. And of course our table had originally been set for 7 so we figured it wouldn't put them out terribly. They acted like it was a terrible inconvenience but did reluctantly give her a chair and a place setting. The guacamole, chips, and salsa were great. As well, we really enjoyed the cocktails and non alcoholic grapefruit cocktail. The huevos rancheros, milpa salad, shrimp dish, wings, trout, and chilaquiles were all tried by the group, and we enjoyed everything. Of course, the tortillas are very good and we got a few side orders (2 tortillas per order) for the table. Towards the end of the meal, one of my friends went to the restroom and overheard the staff speaking negatively about our table and our friend for coming late/ not ordering more (she only got an order of chips, which is admittedly weird, but the rest of our group more than made up for her with food and alcohol.) Overall, the staff was unfriendly and continually gave the impression that we were something of a burden. $350 later we were left hungry and uncomfortable with how the staff behaved. Disclaimer: I wanted to give 5 stars but my partner insisted I take a star off for the prices, and I agree it's a tad on the expensive side. For dinner for 3, including 2 drinks, the bill was $200+tip. (and we only ordered two entrees) Coming from California, we felt this was hefty for even gourmet mexican food. In terms of the food, everything we tried was delicious. The tortilla chips tasted fresh and hearty, the guac was perfectly smooth and flavorful. The salsas were fun to try. We loved the queso asado appetizer and felt the portion size was fair. However, for the flutas de mole, it seemed like a poor value to get two small flutas for $14. They were good, but nothing to write home about. Our entrees were the carnitas and the skirt streak. The proteins were both cooked perfectly and we found them very tasty. I would not say that the plating or the quantity measured up to the price point, and please note that when they bring tortillas for the table or refill the tortilla chips, this will incur an additional charge. The drinks were not very strong, but standard NY pricing. Service was quick and attentive. I have nothing negative to say about the staff. Location seems a bit mysterious for an upscale restaurant, as the immediate neighborhood does not feel super upscale, and there are hardly any businesses around. You feel like you're walking through a backstreet to find the entrance to this restaurant. My overall opinion is that the food you get at Sobre Masa is quite good and definitely close to a fine dining level, but it doesn't quite live up to its price point. I can understand the hype behind this place, but found that I would rather try a different mexican restaurant in the future than come back here. Sobre Masa has an incredible amount of potential, its just not all the way there based on what I had. It was a mix of incredible dishes and ones that just didnt cut it. The good: Everything there is made fresh and you can taste it. The fluke and scallops were incredible. The fluke ceviche looks more like a crudo but brings all the best flavors of ceviche. The scallops are buttery and paired with a spicy green salsa that goes well with fresh tortillas on the side. The drinks are hit or miss. They use a lot of ingredients I wasn't familiar with so I would suggest getting to know your bartender so you end up with something you'll like The not so good: So the papitas were tasty but a lot of them ended up coming out soggy. Soggy chips are not fun obviously. I think they have just not gone out from the kitchen quick enough. The wings. I just didnt enjoy the flavor. I didnt finish them. The verdict: Id normally give this place 3.5 stars but considering the generally high level of execution on their dishes and the fact I couldnt have 2 of their signature dishes (mole & al pastor tacos). When did saying "vibes" become so crucial to our vocabulary that we can't stop saying it? Sobre Masa is VIBES VIBES VIBES. You feel it in the playlist, in the playfulness, in the absolute joy in the air when you walk in. "Sobre Masa, the best place in the world," the servers chime in together. "Lo mejor," I respond, because it just might be. Fabrizio was our server and we couldn't help but laugh and dance, he was the best. The servers reassured me when I tried to make sure that there wasn't any cheese in the guacamole ("CHEESE? No authentic guacamole has cheese!") The scallop aguachile was summery and light- the watermelon and jicama "agua" was good enough to drink straight up from the bowl. Totopos crisp and thick, the salsa de arbol that comes with the guacamole was my favorite. Enchiladas de mole negro tasted like Oaxaca. My heart was broken because they had run out of tacos al pastor, so next time we'll just have to get there earlier. have been looking forward to trying this spot for a while and very happy to have experienced it. had a reservation for 8 pm on a Sunday evening of a long weekend as I heard it can be difficult to get a table, but it was relatively empty so think that it may not be necessary if i go again in the future. opted for the para las abejas cocktail even though im not a huge cocktail person i thought it was great! not too sweet, floral, and very pretty. it was mild enough to not overpower the other flavors in the dishes. we wanted the fluke ceviche but they were unfortunately out so we opted for the octopus salad instead. very delicious. fresh and tart i honestly thought it was great just on its own with a bit of avocado and crunchy tortilla. they provide an assortment of sauces/salsas which added a nice kick if you desired. for my main i opted for the skirt steak which comes with fresh tortillas. this was really really good. great flavor, great seasoning, meat wasn't too fatty and decently marbled, and soft. i love onions so the grilled onions on the side were appreciated as well. i know the chefs here are former pastry chefs so though i intended to try a postre i was unfortunately too full. hoping to be back soon for brunch where i can try something then! if i could rate this spot out of 10 id give it an 8 or 9. the food itself was pretty much a 10 but i felt the service was too fast/a bit cold and the meal felt a tad rushed for my liking. ill also say that while some parts of the restaurant were nice the decor wasn't as cohesive as i had anticipated. nonetheless, worth coming back for! read more

Another top 5 meals this year for me! I cannot believe this isn't Michelin Star yet as of this date - but everything from the cocktails to the meal was so on point and so interesting. The warm blue corn tortillas, the warm and mildly spicy barbacoa - JUST WOW. The green sauce was so sharp and a tasty contrast. Multi faceted business. It's a coffee shop up front, I believe a tortilla factory in the middle, and a mezcaleria in the back. We came late in the evening specifically for the mezcaleria. The mezcal selection is one of the best in NYC. Extensive list with ABVs listed but the pricing was obsolete. I had the La Venenosa Sierra Volcanes Cenizo, the Ranch Tepua Lechuguilla Shrevei, and the Gusto Histrico Jabalí. The bartender was also kind empty to offer a couple samples of a mezcal too. Mezcal was served with orange slices, sal de gusano, and cacao beans. For food, we started with the guacamole with chips. The chips has a flavor that reminded me a bit of popcorn. The guacamole is served with their five signature house sauces. The sauces were superb! For the main course, we shared a bunch of their tacos plus a crostata which was taco topped with grilled cheese (not a grilled cheese, but literally grilled cheese). Their signature sauces were fantastic on the tacos. My favorite was the orange pepper sauce. There are two gender neutral restrooms. Stumbled upon this place on a Saturday night, when you first enter the establishment it feels like a converted warehouse. It felt a bit off the beaten path, and the decor was lovely. The service was wonderful and attentive. We felt taken care of. The food was a solid 4/5 stars. Definitely a memorable meal, but the mocktails were overpriced, and the chicken and polenta dish was simply put...not good. The chicken tasted like boiled chicken, and I gave it to my partner to finish it because I couldn't. It was my first time trying Oaxacan polenta; I wasn't expecting the sweetness of it, but that was bearable. What was outstanding though, food wise, was the guacamole, cauliflower tacos, trout, and FLAN! Absolutely get the flan! Overall, worth trying, but in my opinion, overpriced. read more

Excellent all around: drinks, meal, concept ( coffee shop/ restaurant), vibe. Sobre masa impresses as a cute coffee shop when you first walk in, but keep walking back to a chill space offering really good food and drinks! They have an excellent mezcal selection. I opted for the Sana Sana, which is a unique drink with a great smoky flavor. For dinner we shared tacos and I really enjoyed the alambre, which was chicken, onion, peppers with melted cheese. This could be a 5 on the flan alone. Easily the best flan I've ever had and frankly it isn't close. In fact, it redefined what flan should be for me Servers were great. Helpful with recommendations and clarifications Chips and salsa were fantastic Chicken wings were great Pollo con polenta was incredible Bathrooms were pristine and restaurant was clean and comfy Outstanding stop. Sobre masa does not deserve the recognition that it has received. Every plate I ordered even after consulting the waiter was disappointing. I ordered a steak that was $38 and less than 6oz and poorly cooked an amateur chef could have seasoned that steak better than they did. Their guacamole was tasteless. I came here not knowing what to expect. I was familiar with their old location and looking to forward to finally trying their menu. I arrived here not even knowing the food was Mexican. (I only experienced the cafe in prior visits) And the food did not disappoint. I've had a lot of Mexican food but not quite like this. The server was extremely helpful in explaining the different flavors and textures to me. He was extremely attentive and a genuine fan of Mexican dishes. The vibe was low key and private. I like the decor & very friendly staff at Sobre Masa but the food was disappointing. I tried the Sunday night carnitas special for 27$. The portions were ok but the carnitas lacked flavor. The salsas were spicy. The tortillas were good. After reading so many highly positive reviews, I was really expecting to be impressed. If you've ever been to Oaxaca Mexico or the Rick Bayless restaurant Topolobampo in Chicago, both are good frames of reference. A dish costing 27$ plus tax? Should be amazing. read more
