I came here not knowing what to expect. I was familiar with their old location and looking to forward to finally trying their menu. I arrived here not even knowing the food was Mexican. (I only experienced the cafe in prior visits) And the food did not disappoint. I've had a lot of Mexican food but not quite like this. The server was extremely helpful in explaining the different flavors and textures to me. He was extremely attentive and a genuine fan of Mexican dishes. The vibe was low key and private. Great for conversation and low stimulation vibes. read more

I like the decor & very friendly staff at Sobre Masa but the food was disappointing. I tried the Sunday night carnitas special for 27$. The portions were ok but the carnitas lacked flavor. The salsas were spicy. The tortillas were good. After reading so many highly positive reviews, I was really expecting to be impressed. If you've ever been to Oaxaca Mexico or the Rick Bayless restaurant Topolobampo in Chicago, both are good frames of reference. A dish costing 27$ plus tax? Should be amazing. read more

Sobre Masa is a pretty nice Mexican restaurant located in Bushwick. It's got the modern classy restaurant vibes going strong - hip music, candles, and a tastefully decorated bar. The service is really fun! Our server was super passionate about the food, and was really cool. I wish we could hang out as friends! We ordered chips for the table before getting in to our mains. The chips were absolutely freaking fantastic. Clearly house-made, with salsas that will leave your taste buds begging for more. For drinks, I highly recommend the michelada if you like beer. It's served in a super cool tall glass, with a straw coated in bandaritas tamarind candy. Classic!! I had the carnitas. They were STUNNING! Perfectly cooked and super tender. It was definitely giving socal taco vibes. I know we're on the east coast and as a socal boy I know what socal tacos are like, however this was super impressive! The handmade tortillas were phenomenal, and the fixings that come with it too (pickled onions, cilantro, etc) were the perfect addition. We ordered the tres leches to go, and I highly recommend that as well if you're in the mood for dessert! The tres leches read more

This is my favorite Mexican restaurant periodt! My friends and I have have shared pretty much everything on their menu and everything was a hit. It wasn't just good, it was all amazingly full of authentic flavor. The staff is also chefs kiss, they are so down to earth, helpful, friendly and really know a lot about everything on the menu including mezcal and tequila. I just haven't been to a brunch as of yet but plan to do so very soon. This place itself is on the smaller side and cozy but definitely large enough to go with friends. read more

FINALLY a worth the while Mexican restaurant in Bushwick. Bushwick has so many Mexican eateries but the majority lack care to ingredients, service and atmosphere. Sobre Masa does not. Excellent wine, beer, tequila and Mezcal selection from Mexico- not just your typical selection. Guacamole was delicious and fresh. For $16 was it overpriced? Heck yes but anywhere in NYC expect to pay and arm and a leg extra. Also came with a selection of 3 salsas and a fantastic garlic aioli. 3 scallops for $27 also very overpriced but I didn't mind as they were cooked perfectly, super fresh and with a great pepita sauce. The pepita sauce did not overpower the scallop which is very easy to do. Brussel sprout app was a very surprising star. I never though the acidity of a lime would raise the profile but they were totally crave worthy. This is a must order (and this is coming from a super meat eater). Steak quesadilla- steak was cooked medium rare and tender. Steak was the star and didn't need the cheese or tortilla but was very good. I felt the steak might have been better on its own with some sort of side but quality was there all around. Chicken mole enchiladas, definitely best mole I have had in awhile. I have had better in Puebla and Oaxaca but that's a super unfair comparison. Not too sweet and with a depth of flavor. Chicken was cooked very well and not dried out. Aside from Brussel Sprouts the other hands down star was the flan. I love flan and get it often to only be disappointed. This flan was perfect. Creamy, smooth, not to sweet and not too heavy or dense. Guac with chips, Brussel sprout app, scallop app, one steak quesadilla, one order of mole enchiladas, a flan, 2 beers and 1 michelada with 20% tip cost $200. Everything in NYC is a complete rip off at this point but I don't mind paying when the food is good, the service is on point and the atmosphere is good. Whoever is running this place cares and it is so nice to see. I will go back and I don't say that often. read more

Has reservations for Saturday night. Needed to make a last minute change and they were accommodating. Very good authentic Mexican. Loved the Queso and Cauliflower tacos as an appetizer shared with others. The lamb meatballs were amazing. Definitely get refills on the homemade sauces! Drinks were delicious and large! Only negative was it was a little too dark. read more

We had a 1030 reservation on Saturday night and the host sat us straight away. Our male server was full of positive energy and offered menu suggestions. I asked for celery and sea salt rim on the Paloma and he was happy to oblidge. The guacamole appetizer was a large portion with a light garlic flavor and fresh crispy chips. The server also brought four portions of salsa, my favorite was the verde. My tacos were delicious and had cilantro and pineapple for a bright flavor. The entire experience was relaxed and warm and the food was great. read more

Amazing new Oaxacan restaurant, cafe, bar in Bushwick. So glad to see them open up, a perfect addition to the neighborhood!! The servers are on top of their game and the delicious food is worth writing home about. The vibes of the space are amazing with the secret bar in the back that you can't see from the street and authentic heirloom corn tortillas hand-made on site! The owners are amazing people and always extremely friendly, you can tell their passion for Sobre Masa is felt in every detail. Can't wait to come back again this weekend! read more

Breathtaking place hidden on a quaint street in bushwick, at first I thought I had the wrong address. Storefront looks like it's just a coffee shop. Coffee shop entrance where I guess in the day serves its purpose. As you make your way towards the back through another small side entrance you enter a beautiful bar which makes you feel like you are in Mexico. When given the option to sit at the bar or a table of course it was right at the bar where the ambiance adds to the experience. Let's start with drinks. Very unique liquors and honestly I didn't know what half were. Very nice and talented bartender dissected it for us. Most liquors are uniquely crafted in Mexico. Didn't matter much because all of our drinks were excellent. They also make clear ice on site and I love how they branded the ice to finish ( see my pics) My favorite drink - de pasa- Mexican rum drink with a pleasant savory finish. This is the best cocktail I've had in months. Most places cannot impress me but this drink took my breath away. The other drink they are popular for was the papazote- served first portion with an olive second portion with lemon peel - also very good. Last drink which I wasn't crazy about pinche love which was a bit too fruity for my palate but when taken with the garnish tasted a bit better. For the food. Extremely small food menu. The guac and chips was solid. Tacos/ specialities only are served with barbocoa, pork or cauliflower. I can't have cauliflower and I don't like pork so that didn't leave me with many options. HIGHLY RECOMMEND THEY ADD MORE PROTEIN OPTIONS TO THEIR MENU-chicken or tofu anything more would be nice. That being said it was delicious. My favorite was the gringa served with queso fresco pineapple deliciousness!!! Also food is served with a side of 5 salsas which made the experience super fun. They make their own tortillas on site - they were delicious. You can purchase these to take home so of course I did. I really hope this place does well and expands their food menu. I will be coming back. read more

I love when I find a Mexican restaurant that tastes as good as the places in LA! This place is a little gem in Brooklyn with a great vibe and super friendly staff. The food was delicious!!! The guac is a very generous portion - just needed more chips. The cauliflower tacos across the board was my personal favorite. Flavored just like chorizo and with some crispy cheese? YUM!!!!! We left feeling so satisfied and full. Highly recommend. read more

I'm from the West Coast and visited this restaurant at the invitation of the owner a few weeks ago (was in NY promoting a film) and the owner was atrocious. She brought food and drinks (alcoholic) that we did not order, so we assumed it was on the house. That wasn't the case and she charged us for it stating, "You have money, so you can pay." Aside from the horrible service, the food is so-so... but I find that to be the case with most Mexican restaurants in NY. There are so many great places to eat in NY that this place really isn't worth your time and money. read more

Went there for dinner recently without reservations and was seated at the bar. We expected this and it was fine. But by the time we left around 7:30 pm, most of the tables were empty. So they could have easily seated us at a table (but we also didn't ask b/c we assumed they were all reserved). The food was incredible and they had the best salsa (at least 4 varieties) we have ever had. We only had the beer, but the cocktails looked beautiful and fresh (as we watched the bartender preparing them). The space was perfect as it was very Brooklyn/Bushwick, converted industrial warehouse vibe with South American artwork. And the dishware and glassware were perfectly aligned with the style and ambience. Prices were reasonable and service was great. Definitely go - we will go again soon! read more

I wanted so hard to give this place 5 stars, because I wanted to try it for months...but that bill made it hard to rate it more than "could've been better". The positive out of this experience, is that the heirloom corn tortillas are truly amazing, no doubt and just for that it's worth checking out (once). It looks like a popular place for drinks, which isn't my first criteria when I want to explore an authentic cuisine. I still tried their homemade horchata, which was truly delicious but really for the few sips and a $8 price that transformed into a $9 on the bill, that was not that sweet after all, especially when the ice cubes are almost as big as the ones you put in a glass of whisky, anyway that was a bit a bittersweet start. We got the prawns, the sauce was very unique and delicious but a price of $24, for 4 prawns, that was the next steep bitter note. Are these prawns from the beautiful waters of Mexico? Maybe there is a logical explanation, the economy, or something like that? No clue... I recommend you skip appetizers and go straight to entrees, and stick to those, they come with their amazing tortillas. Basically, the food is really good but I didn't know Bushwick was getting this overpriced, so overall nah. read more

I came here for brunch on a Saturday afternoon. It was super easy to get a reservation so take advantage of this before this place gets popular with eater and all the food bloggers out there. It's really authentic, they make their own blue corn tortillas. I got the juice that is fresh. You can see them squeeze the oranges in the juicer. It was super foamy and delicious, I got the huevos rancheros which was great, not too heavy or greasy, the salsa sauce that came with it was delicious. I got the tres leches cake which was beautiful and really good and I also got an appetizer the memela which was amazing and highly recommend getting that. My friend got the Chilaquiles and he really loved them. The space is beautiful and the service was great. I love the portraits and the orange walls and the lighting. Great experience all over I highly recommend everyone going there to get authentic Mexican cuisine for brunch or dinner and their cocktail menu looked amazing. read more

Sobre Masa is a fun restaurant located in Bushwick, not far off from Morgan L. The drinks were memorable, less so for the food. We ordered margs during happy hour and then orange drinks afterwards. Both the margs and the orange drink were delicious, strong, and really fun to sip. The food however, was overpriced for their portion. The meatballs were dry even with the gravy on. The fried cheese dish was interesting with the tomato dipping sauce. It's a good place for apps and drinks, but the food was underwhelming for dinner. read more

Great place for Mexican food! Got the guacamole, fluke ceviche, and scallops. This is more of a sharing place so would recommend doing that. The guacamole comes with three salsas and a garlic aioli and is deceptively filling. Scallops were extremely rich and ceviche was very fresh. All were super delicious and well worth getting. read more

Skip! This restaurant has so much potential but it misses the mark. The decor was absolutely beautiful. You can tell they were intentional about every detail down to the cool coasters. The issue was the food. The food was bland and it left me looking around for any sauce that might add a little flavor. The service was also slow and we were there on a quiet Friday night. I think there are better restaurants in the area for this price. read more

Had a really nice first impression of this place. Overall an extremely charming spot and the food was delicious. The sauce spread is a must, you can literally put it on anything. The menu is quite small and a little pricy but I would still return. The drinks were not my favorite. Perhaps I got something that just wasn't for me. Staff was friendly and attentive. Really nice date option or a catch up with some friends. I'd recommend getting a reservation as the space is a little small but they do accept walk-ins. read more

Came here for dinner early Friday night and sat at the bar. Cool vibe - big warehouse turned restaurant with bar in the middle. We started with the guacamole and chips (yum) and they brought out a tray of different salsas (double yum!! Definitely try them all). We tried all of the tacos (beef, al pastor, cauliflower) and I also threw the "gringa" quesadilla in there to try. Overall, the best things we had were the guacamole, the salsas, and the al pastor tacos. Cocktails were a bit disappointing for the price point. But would go again if invited! read more

everything we ordered was really good. we sat towards the back of the restaurant late on a sunday evening and we could hear the steak sizzling on the grill. i could smell it as it cooked. all of the servers who helped us were so very nice and friendly and helpful. we ordered everything i wanted to try and i loved it! we started with the aguachile that had a nice lemony taste. then we got the mole, the arrachera, and the beef tongue empanada. the mole had a nice authentic flavor and the broccolini's were perfectly cooked. i am not a fan of tongue but the empanada was good, due to personal preference i wouldn't order it again but it is worth ordering! the arrachera smelled amazing and the tortillas were nice and thick. for dessert we got the coconut custard that was topped with little popcorns that gave the custard a nice texture contrast. i love mezcal and every drink i got that had mezcal was perfectly balanced. read more

My overall experience here was alright. Came with my boyfriend for a date night and our servers were very nice and explained the food well. However felt the price was a little steep for the quality. Not that it wasn't great- I just think for what it was the prices did not match the quantity of food we got. Had some fat / bone in the meat that was rather unpleasant. Would still give it a go if your in the area! read more

I came here with a big group to celebrate my bday and the staff could not have been more patient, more kind, or more accommodating. I am so incredibly happy to have found this place! The vibes were perfect, the food was perfect, and it's just the best spot to have both big groups or an intimate dinner :) unfortunately, no pictures were taken because we were ravenous. I loved everything we ate but the standouts to me were: the skirt steak, carnitas, and the lamb meatballs. That steak was seriously.... Unreal. Highly highly highly recommend! read more

I was disappointed by the service where the wait staff we had seemed to have an attitude where they were "over it." The service really needed to reflect the prices here which are overinflated. We ordered the baby carrots and received no more than six long, thin carrots for $14. Absolutely astonishing. The portions are small, I went with two other people and we all shared chips, lots of appetizers and an entree and after a bill of $75 each with drinks, I still left feeling pretty hungry. Standouts were the asparagus esquires which were delicious as well as sprits served in a mini carafe on ice. Atmosphere is not the greatest either, concrete walls and a bathroom hand dryer that the whole restaurant can hear. A lot of this would be easier overlooked if the food were a little more reasonably priced and the staff more welcoming. read more

Bushwick, the Mexican food gap has been filled. Sobre Masa is an example of the next era of Mexican food. Not necessarily a list of traditional dishes (though you will find a few of those on the menu), but rather an "outside the box" approach that still delivers all the flavors, seasoning and ingredients from Mexico. This is Mexican food done right! Finally! Thank you Sobre Masa! And the drinks are amazing too! read more

The food here was very good! I enjoyed everything we ordered. We had the guacamole, which is served with a side of salsas all very good! We ordered a fried queso panela and fried chicken wings, the fiesta enchiladas in mole sauce, (mole was black and very delicious) we also tried the skirt steak, my favorite. Although smaller than I expected it was very tender and perfectly cooked and seasoned. The drinks were good, I tried a paloma and Margarita both were very good. Then desert was excellent flan and the pastel tres leches! This tres leches was incredible, highly recommend it. The service was perfect, not too over bearing and there at the right times. My only criticism stems from a peeve of mine, but not a deal breaker. Plates should be removed when customers are visibly finished. All the staff were very nice and lovely, made me feel very welcome, will definitely return. Looking forward to trying the carnitas. As for the ambiance it is a casual dining spot very modern decore, minimalist, organic and not pretentious which I love! read more

I read about Sobre Masa online and was super excited to come for the freshly made tortillas (I mean, the website pictures and descriptions of the rich history behind the tortilleria conveyed such passion!) We came with a group of 5 friends on a Saturday evening. Food - 5/5 AMAZING! Must get the big bowl of guac and chips to share. Delicious. With a group of 5, I thought they were really thoughtful to have brought us extra chips. For the mains, we tried the al pastor, chicken and cauliflower tacos. I think each one was executed very well and the tortillas were fresh (as expected). The food came out quickly and the drinks were plentiful as well. Pricing was also very accessible per taco. Special call out to the cauliflower taco that could be done vegan, as well as the tray of 6 special sauces they bring out to accompany the tacos. It's one of those places that doesn't go overboard with options, but everything is made simply and well done. For food alone, I would love to come back. Service - 3/5 Some minor interactions that rubbed us the wrong way but I think totally fixable. To start, I really empathize with the staff - they seemed to be overwhelmed even when it wasn't super crowded. I could see the waiter visibly running around trying to get things under control. However, their website said "walk-ins only" very explicitly. They weren't able to sit us when we arrived with 3 out of 5 (which is totally fine). We weren't worried since they had a lot of open tables at the time. But when the 2 others came 10 mins later, they said all the tables were reserved. They could have let us know when we walked in asking for a table of 5. Also, I would have made reservations if I had known. After some back and forth, they allowed us to stay if we ate within an hour and 15 mins. We were appreciative that they were able to fit us in but nonetheless, it left a weird feeling for us. Overall, the ordering system was a bit disorganized and it took a bit of probing to finally get our order in. I think if they can work out the organizational kinks, this restaurant would be a knockout. Enjoyed the food overall and I think this is a great casual spot! read more
