The Viet game in NYC is coming up and Madame Vo is one of them. The thing is that it's so pricey compared to other spots, so the Vietnamese scene also becomes a more elevated version with nicer aesthetics too. I've been craving some noodle soup, so came here for their Bun Bo Hue ($22). I did look over at a neighbor's Pho with the Shortrib, which looked amazing. Luckily, we were able to add the Shortrib ($10) to the bun bo hue soup too. That shortrib fell off the bone and was so tender. It's a great way to add extra protein in your meal. I also loved the flavors of the bun bo hue broth making this soup so comforting. We also shared the Com Suon Nuong ($24), which is their pork chop rice. Now usually I find pork chop a bit dry, but they grilled and marinated theirs perfectly. The meat was so tender and tasty and left me wanting more. Both of these dishes were wonderful with the most tender meat and I'd be back for them again. We also had some appetizers which were just ok. They were nice to share and snack on before our meal, but could also live without it. We had the Banh Xeo ($17) and Banh Knot ($16). They both come with veggies to make into a wrap. Swung by one evening for dinner with my cousins, and I thought it was really good. I appreciated how well the menu was marked for dietary restrictions like vegan or gluten-free, and the food was tasty. I ordered a vermicelli dish w/ grilled pork and enjoyed it! Prices were on the high side, but that comes w/ the territory. Ambiance was really nice too - I'm starting to see more nicer Vietnamese places coming up, which is cool. This one has a nicer vibe than most I've been to in and around Philly, though. I guess that's to be expected of NYC. Service was really prompt as well, and the staff was very friendly. Food: The food is just okay here. I have been here several years ago and thought the food was very average but decided to come back and give it another try. I still find the food to be very average; there is much better Vietnamese food in NYC. I had The Madame Pho which is their classic pho dish with beef slices and meatballs. The broth was flavorful, but the flavor wasn't as deep as other Vietnamese restaurants. We also tried an appetizer (a crispy pancake with squid and bean sprouts inside) served with lettuce and mint for wrapping. This was also nothing special. There was nothing bad about the food at all, but it isn't special enough to make me want to return and also pay more in general for Vietnamese food. Having given it a second chance and still being unimpressed, I won't be returning here. There is much better Vietnamese food that is less expensive around the city. Service: Service was excellent, and we were greeted with a lot of smiles and warmth from all of the staff both going into the restaurant and leaving the restaurant. Our server was excellent and always around. She was very attentive. Ambiance: Decor and ambiance is very nice in this place. Tables are spaced very closely together, but seating is still comfortable. The restaurant is pretty narrow but can still accommodate both small and large groups. I came here for dinner recently as I was craving Vietnamese food and it hit the spot! We did walk-ins and were fortunately able to grab a seat at a bar. Service was polite and very quick. I appreciate the couple unique offers like banh khot and soy bean lychee drink. Fun ways to start off the dinner. The pho broth is fairly bland for my personal taste and I think it could be more seasoned or at least salted. The noodles were soggy as well so I never got a satisfying chew. Sometimes restaurants need time to improve, and Madame Vo is proof of this. When they first opened years ago, I left completely underwhelmed, with the flavors tasting muted and forgettable. At the time I had the kind of meal that made me wonder why others raved about it. I was confused by the hype back then, but returning recently felt like discovering an entirely new establishment. The banh xeo came out golden with turmeric, crispy edges and fresh herbs with nicely cooked shrimp. The garlic noodles were nice and springy. The rice cakes and grilled lemongrass chicken both hit bright flavor notes that Vietnamese food does so well. They seated us in this little back area that was great for my notoriously loud friend group. Some places just need time to hit their stride, work out the kinks, and find their voice. Great spot if you're craving something light, refreshing, and Vietnamese! I came here about twice in one month because it was just that good. The banh xeo is perfectly crispy, but not too oily. With the pickled vegetables and fish sauce, each bite possesses a burst of flavors. Portions are large, so I'd recommend sharing! (we split among 3 people) The vermicelli bowls are delicious as well. The meat is perfectly tender and vegetables are fresh. However, my only critique is that they could give more noodles... The garlic noodles were also delicious but not worth the premium price in my opinion. They are also on the heavier side, and can probably be shared by two people! Seating is limited with small tables placed close together so I wouldn't recommend choosing this spot for larger groups as it will get a little cramped. Servers are friendly and helpful. The fried rice also had a very nice char and smokey flavor that I haven't encountered before, The braised pork wasn't very special, and I was expecting much more from the caramel and pineapple sauce. I have been to Madame Vo many times since it opened. I most recently went this week. The restaurant is long and narrow, with a lot of bench seating. There is a small bar. Service is always good. My favorite dishes here remain the Pho Chay and the Garlic Noodles. I always want to order other items on the menu, but I never want to sacrifice getting these two things. The Pho Chay is hands down the best vegetarian pho I have had anywhere, and I do crave it a fair bit. The garlic noodles are always packed with flavor, and I always order them to split with my dining partner. The noodle salad I had was honestly delicious, I would highly recommend and it's a great item to get delivered. When my friend and I came here for dine in we shared a Bun Bo Hue, salty limeade, and a chicken wing platter. The wings were coated in this spicy, nutty, garlicky sauce that I still think about. My friend and I decided to do a LES girls day out and coming here for lunch, did not disappoint! We were in love by the beautiful photos of the dishes but not ready to make choices, lol. I love it here! The wait staff is so friendly and nice and very welcoming. I ordered the pan fried rice cake and the green papaya salad. This was by far the best green papaya salad I've ever had.
