Come here for the hot "something" if you're freezing your butt off. Use the bathroom, get warm inside and out before paying cash only for mediocre food. The Vegetarian Pho was ok. It was hot, had some flavor but nowhere near authentic flavors. But we're grateful for getting warm here on a cold day. A nice relatively inexpensive dinner with friends. There were three of us. Two ordered the Saigon Pho and one the Vegetarian Pho. We found the Saigon Pho flavorful with a decent amount of noodles and protein. The Vegetarian one also had a lot of veggies and more of a vegetable broth flavor (which makes sense) that was less flavorful than the beef broth. We felt they didn't give enough sprouts for three bowls, but I assume people don't even eat what's put on the table, and I'm we could've asked for more if we wanted it. Service was a little scattered because it was a busy and prime dinner time but everyone was nice. There was a wait but they were able to accommodate us and put us outside because we had a dog. There aren't many tables outside only 4 two tops and 1 one top. The place is cash only but if you order online you can pay by card (price is a couple dollars more) and the food will automatically come to the table. - Shrimp Summer rolls: classic, can't go wrong - Spicy S.S. We missed Saigon Shack last year. We made a point to visit this time. Some of the best Vietnamese food around the area. It always seems to be busy even at 2 o'clock in the afternoon. We ordered the Classic Banh mi which consist of Vietnamese ham, Vietnamese bacon, pate, lettuce, pickled daikon, and carrots, cucumber, and baguette. While this neighborhood has an abundance of appealing eating options, after noticing the numerous (approaching 3,000) reviews on Yelp, I decided to mosey over to Saigon Shack for food needs. Since it was closing in under an hour, Saigon Shack wasn't too packed but there were still people dining in and coming in. I placed my order, paid in cash, and then waited about 10 minutes for my food. I ordered the grilled pork chops banh mi ($12.95) which came with mayo, cucumber, carrots, and daikon. And cilantro but I elected to remove it. You also have your choice of spicy or non-spicy. They use a soy glaze for the chop, and I thought I detected some ginger in the glaze as well. The whole sandwich was pretty filling and tasty, with a reasonable portion of pork. The thai tea was the star of this meal - it came out unmixed, so you can tell that its using real tea and condensed milk; there wasn't any additional sweetener used either, so it wasn't too sweet. A little let down is the broth, it's lacking a little flavor. I've been to really good pho places but this didn't stand out. I ordered a side of grill pork chop on the side. It's kinda too dry. Fried spring rolls are great. I love putting them in a lettuce wrap, decked out with the cucumbers, carrots, sriracha, hoisin, etc, the works. The fish sauce is so good though on the more milder side. I like to keep the fish sauce for the meat that comes with the pho. Grilled pork chops pho. Holy. This is the one I get every time. The broth is so deep and flavorful. I wanted to take the left over broth to go so I could sip sip sip again at home. I never quite finish the pork chops in the pho though. They're a little tough and, maybe it's because the broth absorbs the flavor, bland. I usually dunk it in hoisin and sriracha sauce! Still worth for that a-tier salty umami broth. Thai ice tea is fine - I like the crushed ice they use. Usually there's a bit of a wait/it's crowded but I've never had to wait all too long for a table for 2. They only take cash. Heard great things about their vegetarian banh mi and had to stop in for one! My sister has never tried one before but was in love with the lemongrass chicken one! I basically devoured mine. They use soy protein (seitan?) and it was cooked so beautifully you'd almost think it was real meat. Pho was so much better than our expectation with a generous amount of meat but the noodle was overcooked to the point where it kept breaking into pieces as we tried to lift it up with chopsticks. I have been ordering here for years, but about 6 months ago I started ordering from an amazing Vietnamese restaurant that had recently started providing delivery service. Although the food is good, the inconsistency in their service make it difficult to continue ordering here. I thought I would give it a try again tonight and can see that things haven't changed. So tonight the restaurant ran out of sprouts. Rather than running to the store, giving me a call, or simply omitting it, they sent the pho goodie bag with a hand full of lettuce. Did they think I wouldn't notice... or actually put lettuce in my soup? Recognizing that they are missing an important part of the dish, one would think they would honor the request I type every time in the comments in all caps: "EXTRA BASIL PLEASE", but I was only able to fish out 3 tiny leaves. This place is legit. I have been really disappointed in the quality of Vietnamese food in Manhattan, but Saigon Shack hits. It's small, limited counter space and tables packed in, so it always feels crowded. It's not really a linger over your meal kinda place, it's more of a lunch joint. I've been twice and had the summer roll in warmer weather which was delicious, and just a few days ago had the chicken pho with a Thai iced tea. The Thai iced tea was good, strong, not insanely sweet. The chicken in the pho is grilled lemongrass chicken, which I am a big fan of. Even for places where the pho ga broth is good I don't normally eat much of the chicken cause boiled chicken is so boring. The lemongrass flavor infuses the broth, making it even more delicious. The beef balls were chewy, bouncy, and tasty. The brisket wasn't as tender as I had hoped, likely because it was on the lean side. The noodles were pretty standard. Appreciated how the broth was hot enough but didn't overcook my noodles. Flavor wise, it was well-seasoned with an appropriate level of saltiness and onions/green onions. Sprouts were fresh but wish they gave us more basil. Coming from the West Coast, I didn't think there was anything super impressive but overall their pho was solid for NYC standards. Food came out quick. There was a good amount of seating but mostly for parties of 2. We were seated close to the main door so it was unfortunately cold.
