Absolutely visit the national treasure that is West Point, and consider staying at the Thayer for the history and convenient on-campus location. But, do not eat at Macarthur's. Trust the previous negative reviews. The service was brusque - no review of the menu, no touch of friendliness or hospitality. Then, it took a full hour for four of our five entrees to arrive - two of which were lukewarm to cool - with the fifth inexplicably missing. A casual inquiry was brushed aside by the server. The fifth entree finally arrived. Neither the server, hostess, or manager asked about our food, most of which was average and all of which was a poor value for the high New York prices. Later, as the server rushed by, she said "I'll bring your check" without asking if we'd want dessert or coffee. This restaurant is coasting on its location and lack of fine dining competition. Enjoy the bar off the lobby, enjoy your time at West Point...but try a casual spot in town or manage or expectations way down before eating here. read more

Four of us had a late-summer lunch on the terrace overlooking the river. The place was mostly empty. Great views out over the river, but the food was only passable and the service by our waiter "Larry" was particularly indifferent. Our food seemed to take a long time to come and then one of us noticed that the entire order was sitting on a tray at the other end of the terrace - for how long?. We waited another 5 minutes for Larry to appear and then just got up and retrieved it ourselves. We were well into the meal before Larry appeared and made a perfunctory apology. I had ordered a cup of coffee and was hoping for a refill, but Larry never offered and by the time he showed up again we were more oriented to leaving. Seafood buffet was excellent! We loved the variety and didn't think 40/person was bad at all. You can also order a la carte but it would easily add up if you had an appetizer and dessert with your meal. Nice views with big open windows. read more

MacArthur's is a restaurant fit for royalty. The staff is completely dedicated towards providing an exquisite dinning experience. I had the pleasure of both the diner menu and elaborate Sunday brunch - both well worth the price. This place has such great history and an amazing view. When I was there recently with friends I was disappointed by how rude our Hispanic waitress was. She was completely unfriendly and didnt want to be there. The two gentlemen at the desk in front of the restaurant were way more polite, professional and helpful. I do not recommend this restaurant at all. Service is just terrible. Here are the facts. Once seated it was twenty minutes before anyone came and took our order. Then it was another thirty minutes before the spinach dip pre-appetizer arrive with salads no where in sight. The restaurant was barely 50% full. If this place wasn't next to West Point and overlooked the Hudson River it would be out of business. Salad with "bleu cheese" dressing was terrible. Dressing was a watered down tasteless mixture with no bleu cheese. Reuben was fair , but the french fries came out cold and tasteless. Ham and cheese club was so-so. Service was horrible. We gave up asking for more drinks after three tries. I would never go back to this place. read more

We enjoyed dinner for six after an Army football game. The wines were excellent, the food( our table choose the salmon and steak entrees) was outstanding, and the historic building was wonderful. We cannot wait to return. At some point between the upstairs Pub and the restaurant downstairs, I dropped my glove. I was here for a conference and stayed at the Thayer Hotel which is very nice. They offered a NY Strip as an option which the waitress recommended. The consensus at the table was the steak was of poor quality and not cook to order. On top of that they served a huge tab of butter on the steak which was over the top. Ya know, I actually am impressed that this place was already 2 1/2 star before I reviewed it. I live about 25 minutes away from West Point military Academy. I've been coming to this restaurant sporadically for about 20 years. This morning we decided to try to go to their famed Sunday brunch. My challenges with the place or quite simple. The service is inconsistent and the food is totally mediocre for a brunch that cost $50 per person. The place, however, is generally always packed and this is the reason why they can't get better; they simply have no competition. If you want a buffet brunch in a very interesting setting set a top the Hudson river, they are the only option. Still this is not an excuse for their flagrant lack of attention to the very basics of hospitality. Our server never cleared dishes, he wasn't around to offer or even a refill drinks, and when he was he did, he seem to excel in sarcasm and attitude rather than service. They meander the dining room offering mimosas with Champagne in one hand, and a plastic pitcher of orange juice in the other hand like you would see at your town diner. They ask you to "take back" your silver" when clearing plates versus just bribing you new silver. For $50 bucks a person, it's lackluster. The food itself is basic but fine, and the view and piano make it semi enjoyable. Good luck. read more

Our family's experience at Macarthur's was HORRENDOUS. After we sat down, I asked for coffee and the waiter brought it without creamer. When I asked him for creamer, he rolled his eyes and made it seem like it was an inconvenience for him to grab it. After I stirred in creamer, I noticed that my spoon has food crusted on it. I told the waiter and he told me to just take one from another place setting at the table and he would replace it. I was telling my mom about this after she came back from the restroom, and the waiter stopped to tell me that "sometimes things get missed, and I brought you a new spoon to fix the problem." Not only was this rude to correct me, but it still wasn't an apology for letting that happen to a guest. He referenced it two more times throughout the meal, saying that they are always busy on graduation weekend. I would estimate only half of the tables were filled, so they were definitely not that busy at the time. Overall, the ease of the restaurant in Thayer is minimal compared to the AWFUL service you get in return. We will be going elsewhere to eat because this is not how you treat guests at any restaurant. read more

I was looking forward to a top-notch meal in the prestigious MacArthur's Restaurant. Unfortunately I left disappointed. If you are looking for stately ambiance, this is the place. Too bad the food does not equal the decor. Started off with the "asian rim" appetizer. Not a bad presentation, but definitely not mind-blowing. I ordered the Rib-eye under recommendation of the waitress. It was a tough piece of leather, with very little seasoning. Did not come close to the quality I expected and additionally, I make a better steak myself on the grill from shop-rite and sams club! mash potatoes were not quite up to temperature. My friend ordered the same rib-eye medium temp and came out very rare. The wife ordered a seafood risotto which, along with the bread was the highlight of the dinner, but still not enough to make the trip back. The menus looked like they were from the original grand opening 125 years ago with such small print you need a magnifying glass to read. The wine list is very small with many unfamiliar titles. And how about $15 Long Island iced teas? We pay $12 in NYC!.. I dont mind paying up for a great dinner, but we went to the cleaners last night instead of dinner.. Should have figured it out when we walked in on a saturday night and nobody there. Poor General Macarthur is turning over in his grave. read more

So Sunday Brunch at MacArthur's Restaurant in West Point this past Sunday was ok. Cost was $36.95 pp which included unlimited Mimosas, Champagne, and Bloody Marys. Drinks were good and refills plentyful. Ambiance was reserved, refined, classic, and true old world West Point, as you can see from the photo I took of the hotel's lobby. The food however was just mediocre and the buffet selection, very poor. For that price I would have preferred to skip the unlimited drinks, as I'm only good for two or three anyhow, and replace it with more of a selection of refined brunch dishes and better quality of the food and it's preparation. Fritatta was bland, bacon soggy and flavorless, home-fries flavor were ok, but soggy and mushy looking. Shrimp Cocktail ok. The shrimp again were soggy, flavor decent as was the cocktail sauce. The bagels and hard rolls were horrible. Again..a rubbery, mass-produced mess. Salads, they had 3, one of which was the Capressi Salad with small balls of Mozzarella and grape tomatoes. Dressing however....LOADED with dry basil. OMG it was horrible...and I like Basil. Way too much, it ruined the salad. The beet salad..canned beets. I could go on and on, but nothing was "out of this world" and NO Eggs Benedict. One last complaint: If your going to have a 1:30 seating and advertise it is until 3:30, don't cut off the live entertainment at 2:30 and start letting the buffet run dry at 3:00! Big NoNo! Anyhow, save your money and check out the Sunday brunch buffets at Torches-on-The-Hudson in Newburgh, or Soho Restaurant in Middletown, both only $15.95 pp and their food quality and selection are much more impressive, AND they both serve Eggs Benedict! read more

This review is for the Sunday Brunch at Thayer Hotel. Quality of food was nothing great, in fact fairly limited in scope. Presentations were not very appealing as the clean up was not quick enough. Further, food was left to run out with long intervals before they brought a replacement. The server, Kelly, was in a grumpy mood and took it out on the patrons. She actually told me we were only entitled to one set of cutlery for the entire buffet! When I called to complain, I was informed this is not the policy of the restaurant. We were forced to take knives, forks and spoons off other nearby tables which were not being used. Would suggest another venue for a Sunday buffet as this was no fun. read more

Please save your money. We had a large party and the one waitress assigned to us was completely overwhelmed and ill equipped. Worst of all the food was just plain bad. The steaks were cold, pork chop was dry and I actually didn't eat it because the meat tasted off as if spoiled. Since it was a large family gathering we opted to focus on enjoying each other so we kept the horrible food and service complaints to a minimum. I will also post these sentiments in trip advisor it was that bad especially for the price. Stay away from dinner here. Lots of options in walking distance. read more

I'd like to attribute the awful food to the Culinary Institute of America, but I don't see how even people who haven't gone to school can cook so poorly. Additionally, the service is slow and clumsy. DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY. This restaurant had the worst atmosphere and staff service I have ever experienced. We were sat down at a table that wasn't even set up, then waited 10 minutes for someone to take drink orders and get us more set ups. The tables and glassware were all dirty, and the whole place seemed run down and ancient. The waiting staff, specifically Sandy and Kelly, was exceptionally incompetent and slammed down our plates and glasses while talking about us within earshot. They were unprofessional and sloppy and ruined the dining experience. The food was mediocre for such a high price, and just plain disappointing. read more

We recently had the unfortunate experience of having dinner here. We had reservations and requested an outside table. We were a little early and told we would need to wait. No problem. We went for a drink and returned at our reservation time. Again we were told it would be a few minutes. The hostess then told us we couldn't have an outside table because there was no waitstaff for that area. I wonder how the people sitting outside got their food? They sat us at a table. The waiter gave us menus and left, to wait on the people sitting outside. He returned and took our order. We were never asked if we wanted something to drink. He brought our food, it was mediocre at best. When we finished, we both left a lot on our plate, he picked up the dishes and said he would get our check. I guess we weren't getting coffee or dessert, which at this point was fine as we just wanted to leave. Do yourselves a favor and eat at the MacDonalds outside the gate. The Spanish Armada has descended on this once fine restaurant. The new menu is gloppy ethnic cuisine, with the only traditional American offering a cheeseburger, which I ordered. It came gloppy surrounded by greasy French fries. Gone from the menu was my treasured chicken salad sandwich. When the dessert menu came, missing was my treasured Stars ad Stripes combo of cake, ice cream, sauce and whipped topping. There was no provision like fruit cup for those on limited diets. My letter of complaint brought a phone call from Victor Flores, assistant manager, who assured me that the new menu had resulted from taste testings. He seemed totally unfamiliar with the old menu. He said that a special order could be prepared for me, entirely missing the point that I don't go to restaurants to have to special order. The restaurant serves families of cadets from middle America whose tastes do not necessarily run to ethnic dishes any more than mine does. What's wrong with a few basic meat and potato dishes? It's sad to see a restaurant with a glorious history go into decline. read more

Food does not come close to living up to surroundings. Two night stay at Thayer Hotel, ate here both nights. First, in Zulu Lounge, bar food, low expectations fully met. The MacArthur dining room is gorgeous, with outdoor dining overlooking the Hudson; so far, so good. Ordered 'crab and lobster cake' appetizer at $13; nary a hint of crab or lobster, tasted only of bread. Ordered $30+ rib eye steak (the menu makes a big deal about their steaks being hand cut on the premises). Requested medium-rare, more rare than medium; served full medium, dry and tasteless. Server went out of his way to explain the meal would be served with steamed asparagus and whipped potatoes. It arrived with over-roasted potatoes (inedible, got rice as a substitute) and overcooked green beans. Server said kitchen changed offerings 'halfway though the dinner service' -- I arrived 15 minutes after they opened. My guess is the stuff was left over from brunch earlier that day. The alleged 'chef' should be embarrassed; he is an embarrassment to the profession. Sure, they have a captive audience since it's the only place to stay on the grounds of the Academy, but they don't have to rub our noses in it. Next time, I'll venture into town, a quick walk. It's hard to imagine being more disappointed than I've been with my dining experiences at the Thayer. read more

I had a date with my husband on a Saturday night and we went to Macarthur's for the beautiful ambiance. The food sucks!!! Plating was messy. They sat us at a table against the wall when there were plenty of tables by the windows. My husband ordered the prime rib medium rare. They served him well. I ordered the Shelton's New England Lobster Cioppino both dishes for $32.00 each. The lobster tail was frozen, not fresh. All seafood including scallops, shrimps, clams, mussels and the lobster were way OVERCOOKED. It was chewy, rubbery and salty to say the least. As I'm typing the review, I saw a previous review showing the restaurant serving seafood buffet on a Friday night. So, I guess I had OVERNIGHT seafood. The worst was when I got home I got diarrhea. I woke up Sunday morning to go to work and had diarrhea again!!!! Do you really think I will go back anytime soon? - - - negative star rating!!! :( read more
