Beet Carpaccio
John J.

The restaurant is in the historic Thayer hotel at West Point. It had a steakhouse feel with a white tablecloth ambiance with a great view of the river (there is an open-air covered patio with even better views, but too humid for us to be out there. We requested a window table and were seated as requested. Service was warm and friendly, but honestly could have been more attentive - especially when drinks were finished or waiting for the bill. Wine by the glass was fine, but very limited on spirits, especially bourbon. Gentleman Jack was all they had and that of course is a whiskey and not a bourbon. Prices were reasonable, but despite the restaurant not being crowded at all, it was a slow wait for our initial order and refills. To start, we tried the Beet Carpaccio and were not disappointed. The dish was fine to share for two and had several types of thin sliced beats with goat cheese and a delicious dressing. I highly recommend it. We shared a ceasar salad after our appetizer and it was easily big enough for three people. The salad was pretty good, but no anchovies as advertised on the menu and way too many croutons. For our entrees, we had the duck and the roast chicken. Hudson Valley produces fantastic duck, but this was a bit disappointing. While and ok flavor, it was a small portion (only 1 small breast), overcooked beyond medium, and slightly tough. The roasted chicken my wife had was excellent. It was a complete half chicken, so too much for my wife and a to go box was supplied. We ordered some sauteed spinach as a table side and it was perfectly cooked. We tried the homemade rustic apple pie ala mode for dessert. My wife loved it, but I thought the crust was way too soft. Overall, very good flavor though and worth a try. Despite some stumbles, I think it deserved to be rounded up to a 5. We would return.

Waffles with banana foster & vanilla ice cream

Thayer brunch was lovely. The food was high quality and kids eat free apparently! The waffle station was paired with bananas foster and vanilla ice cream. The dessert station had lots of options including key lime pie, pecan pie, flourless chocolate cake, cheesecake, Italian cookies, and high quality fruit. Service was quite slow but otherwise fine

Lobster Bisque

MacArthur's Riverview Restaurant is just now opening post Covid closures. If they've had staffing issues, like most dining establishments, you wouldn't know it! They didn't seem to miss a beat this evening! The dining room overlooks the Hudson River, has a stately, grandeur charm and makes for a special evening out. Right off the bat I had a hit and miss. The Maine Lobster Bisque was a big strike out and two bites was all I could tolerate. A bisque is normally creamy and velvety. This bisque had the consistency of a thick chowder but very heavy on a bland flour roux, seemly no cream and void of any lobster flavor. The server was gracious and removed it from the bill, thank you! Unless the Lobster Bisque is improved, it should be removed from the menu. The home run of the evening was the fantastic Candied Bacon: applewood smoked with a lovely, slightly caramelized whiskey-turbinado sugar glaze. The side of house pickles were a wonderful addition, and I'd love to take home a jar! I enjoyed my entree of half of free range chicken, herb roasted. It was tender, moist, flavorful and beautifully plated on a bed of mashed potatoes. The side of "charred asparagus" was thankfully perfectly cooked. A difficult feat because it's easy to overcook asparagus when cooking this technique. The server was attentive and friendly!

We went for a late lunch and were pleasantly surprised by how attentive the service was. The setting alone is quiet, scenic, and relaxing, adding to the experience feeling special. We're particular about cocktails, and the specialty drinks leaned a bit sweet and light for our taste, but switching to a Grey Goose martini solved that quickly. The standout of the meal was the special appetizer, the Lobster Escargot. Between the bread service and the rich, bisque-like sauce layered over the classic preparation, I could have happily ended the meal right there. We left no trace behind. I followed with the crab cake and wedge salad. The crab cake was generously sized, very fresh, and exactly what I hoped for. My husband ordered the branzino, which was absolute perfection, beautifully cooked and full of flavor. The sides, however, were less memorable; the smashed potatoes and green beans felt under-seasoned and a bit boring compared to the rest of the meal. Overall, it was a lovely anniversary lunch with memorable dishes and a beautiful view.

I have read many past reviews. I think this is a place that few areas have. It's a unique place,…read morethat serves thoughtfully crafted dishes. The main theme seems to be fresh fish, seafood, and it seems fresh everything else. (Confirmed that they get fresh shipments daily). With reservations for 9 at 6:30 on a Monday, where many places are closed, we walked into a fully booked restaurant. Our giant table stood out amongst all the other full tables that were in various stages of dining. So, we took up a decent amount of the restaurant space. A reunion with family and so were happy to talk and have some bread, and drinks while they were wrapping up their other patrons also enjoying themselves. The main purpose seemed to be to time taking our orders in a way that they would come out properly. As the food came out, it was one wonderful dish after another. I could name and describe eschar one, but fresh and flavorful is the best way. I can imagine that at the time when we arrived that the kitchen was hopping. The chefs seemed to focus very well on each individual order, so of course it took some, but not excessive time. As it took a little while to start we also were not rushed out. Perhaps if we had gotten there at 5 then I suppose we might have been moved along some, since restaurants need to get some turnover at the peak hours, we were happy to offer some well rewarded patience, which was reciprocated with polite, warm, service and great food. This is a regular place for locals who know what they like. It is well worth putting some effort in to explore the various foods and drinks offered, as they were all exceptional. So, I must give it 5 stars. The food is fantastic, the atmosphere is unique and actually stunning, especially during daylight where you are overlooking the Hudson and into the mountains across the river. Thus, it is a great landmark establishment of the Newburgh area.

The service was long, like 25 min waiting on a coctails, after 20min to order. And another 20 min…read morefor the food to come out. The portions were big. That probably the only great going going for them. It felt like a decent diner cook was given a fancy menu and they let him figure it out on his own. On a positive side coctails had decent amount of alcohol in them. That saved the night

At about 6:10 we were seated, with menus. At about 6:15 a bowl of chips were brought over, and that was the last we saw of our server. We saw people seated after us getting their drinks and food, paying their bill and leaving. And several tables turn over. We kept trying to catch the eye of any one of the wait staff running around, but they looked the other way. By 7:15, and 1 1/4 hours after being seated, we still hadn't ordered! We got up and left, informing the waitress that more than an hour after arrival, we never got to order. The food is terrific here, but there are plenty of good mexican restaurants where we would not be treated so shabbily. We never even had water brought to the table. Do better. We drove around looking for somewhere else to eat, but every place was packed. We ended up at an Indian restaurant, Tanjore (great place), in Fishkill where we finally had dinner at 8. 2 hours after arriving at Azteca and not being served.
