Getting in is a bit of a pain, but that's to be expected because of the extra security required (this restaurant is on the West Point campus). Once inside, service is friendly albeit a bit slow. The servers are very friendly, but all seem just a bit frazzled even though the restaurant was empty (total of 4 two to four top tables at the busiest while we were there). The lobster bisque was overly salty and barely a hint of any actual lobster-- very disappointing, especially because the waitress forgot to put this in when we ordered and we had to remind her about it. The salad with the buratta was very yummy. The buratta was creamy and sweet. My husband ordered crab cakes for his appetizer, and he said it tasted good, but he wished it were a slightly bigger portion for the price. The short ribs I ordered were rich and flavorful. And the view! The view of the Hudson is refreshing and the grounds behind the hotel is gorgeous, so if the weather is agreeable, try to get a seat on the patio. 3 stars because of the meh-ness of the soup and the sloppy service. read more

This is the WORST place I have ever eaten. Honest. I literally never post reviews but this place is so disgusting I really can't find words. The reason I gave ONE star and not ZERO is because of the lovely view from the dining room. First, let me say while walking into the dining area, there was an odor that sometimes you smell in nursing home dining rooms usually coming from the plastic lids covering the food. The windows had handprints all over them. I mean REALLY? We were a party of 8 and the ONLY PEOPLE IN THE RESTAURANT. That being said we had one waitress who took our orders and served us. There appeared to be 3 servers "around" and at times they were chatting while we ate ....the horrible food. We were given a "bell thing" to ring if we needed anything. Again, REALLY? So we needed our server and rang.... Once, twice, three times, and it obviously didn't work. Now if one is responsible for this table, one may make attempts to check on everything I.e., the food, patron's needs, etc. NOPE. The ladies were chatting off to the side of the kitchen and our "waves" got their attention at last. I am so disappointed and disgusted that at WEST POINT, where our granddaughter had just been sworn in for re-enlistment, THIS was our experience. Today was the second time we went over to the Thayer hotel for their Sunday brunch. The food is absolutely delicious, and the waiters and waitresses are very friendly. They have a huge variety of food for their brunch buffet that even the pickiest person can leave there being stuffed. They offer unlimited mimosas and coffee and the water glasses are always being filled. If you go, you need to try their banana foster on a waffle...to die for. I would recommend getting a reservation for 10:30 through open table online, because it's the start of their brunch, and the food is nice and hot, and it isn't too busy first thing in the morning. I went with my husband and the bill came to around 90 dollars, so unfortunately it's not an every weekend thing, but when you are looking to splurg on breakfast/lunch, it's definitely the place to go, and we live over in Westchester county. The WORST service I've ever had in my entire life. Two different servers waited on us at some point, with no hand-off between them or communication about what we had or hadn't yet ordered. One server brought us a warm bottle of white wine and proceeded to pour us each half a glass, before taking the bottle and hiding it to chill away from our table for 15 minutes after I choked on the warm taster. We almost had to go hunt her down to get our wine after that because we were completely ignored. For a bottle of wine priced at three and a half times what I'd pay for it in a grocery store, I'd at least expect it to be cold. Then the food...the "bacon" on the bacon and deviled eggs was straight pork belly and not cooked evenly. Basically, eating straight pork fat. The food was generally bland and underseasoned, and didn't taste like it was made on site. Our meal was brought out from the kitchen by a random worker and left on a tray in the middle of the floor 25 feet away from us for over 10 minutes and left to cool while we sat and wondered if it could possibly be our food. When our server finally noticed it and delivered it to our table, her excuse was "well nobody told me." The scallops were cold by the time my partner got to try them. They were completely unsauced, and the corn and pea​ vegetable medley that came alongside it was straight out of a bag of frozen vegetables. The jolly green giant would have been embarrassed to serve those. There was no seasoning, no sauce, and no flavor whatsoever. Even the mashed potatoes lacked flavor, though we are reasonably sure they were recently real potatoes. As for my meal, the shrimp and grits were lukewarm, but benefited from having been moderately seasoned, likely a result of the prepackaged andouille, judging by the watery and tasteless grits that accompanied. The shrimp were cooked ok. There was a general lack of fresh ingredients and acid, and any resemblance this meal bore to fine dining was notional. I am so disappointed. As an army officer, I am embarrassed that this restaurant exists on west point grounds. General MacArthur deserved better. I will not be taking visitors here. I've had better food at a Panera bread with a C rating from the health department. Speaking of, there was no bread, no bread plates, no appetizer plates (despite the presence of appetizers), and the giant smear of honey that leaked off the ill-suited platter that the pork fat came on and covered almost the entire table was left to sit on the table for the entire meal. We were hesitant to try this from the other reviews, but I have to tell you, it was delicious! They do have a new chef, so I wouldn't necessarily judge this place by the older reviews. We were staying nearby and this was the best option to get to on foot due to a snowstorm. We got the food to go and it was very good even after bringing it home. We attended Afternoon Tea with Santa on 12/21/19. I was expecting an elegant but child friendly experience. The atmosphere is elegant, but the tea/food was lacking. Other than a wonderful Santa there was really nothing child friendly about the experience. The website promised a chocolate fountain and hot chocolate for the children. There was no chocolate fountain and I had to ask our server for hot chocolate. It was not offered. The tea sandwiches had been prepped and place on the tables so far ahead of time that the bread on top had gone stale and crusty. Scones were very dry. The double cream and lemon curd were delicious. There were only 4 tea choices and we were given one small pot of hot water for 4 adults and one child to start. Had to repeatedly ask for more hot water. When it came time to pay we paid half of the bill with cash and half on a credit card. We left a cash tip on the table. The server came back to the table saying the cashier was asking why we hadn't included a tip with our payment. I pointed out the 20% cash tip we left on the table. They apparently assumed we weren't going to tip. They had an 18% gratuity policy for parties of six or more. We were a party of five. Maybe my expectations were too high. I've been to other tea rooms in the area that don't have as elegant an atmosphere but have much better food, tea and service. read more

The experience was as expected. We knew that we were coming more for the experience than for the food. It was a beautiful Sunday early evening dinner after our tour of West Point. It was Sunday evening Labor Day weekend and the restaurant was empty. No one was inside. There were several parties who were also seated outside. Great view of the Hudson as well as the wedding festivities going on outside the hotel. (One of two weddings that afternoon/evening) We were promptly seated. Our water glasses were filled immediately. A pleasant server came over asking for a drink order. The drinks were delivered in a timely fashion. We asked about some of the buildings that were across the Hudson. She didn't know much about the neighborhood. We got the feeling that she was new to the venue. Shortly thereafter, a hostess was making the round and we posed the same questions. She knew about what we were asking but didn't know the answer. She said that she would ask. I said, we will be here for dinner, so here for a while. We never saw her again. One companion had a Malbec that was served in typical restaurant fashion, poured from a small carafe into an oversized glass that makes you wonder why they didn't just use an eyedropper. That companion said that it was mediocre. The salads were generous. Some of the main dishes were decent but a little oversalted, like the chicken and monkfish. The butternut squash ravioli was good enough as was the chicken. I would not recommend the monkfish, was chewy, dry as was the rice. I wonder how long they were sitting under lights. As we were eating finishing our salads, the server asked, are we ready for the main course. Obviously ready for a while. We were not rushed. We enjoyed a leisurely dinner. We finished in time to walk the mile to the concert area to hear the West Point Band. Overall, we were satisfied with our dinner but it is not a destination restaurant. If we were to go back for a meal at the hotel, would probably have the pub food on the roof (Zulu Lounge) also overlooking the Hudson read more

We were disappointed with our recent restaurant appearance. We went to the Sunday brunch, and while there were a few good options, it wasn't worth $39 each to get diner quality food and careless service. Cons: 1. Over cooked prime rib 2. Waitress dumping orange juice, water, coffee on the flour and table 3. Diner quality options on the omelette bar (shredded American cheese, onions, tomatoes, spinach, green peppers) Pros: 1. Everyone was friendly 2. Staff was helpful, despite sloppiness in serving 3. Setting is great. We went here Sunday morning for their continental breakfast. It was buffet style, with several choices to pick from. The nitrate free bacon was very good. Their homemade Apple turnovers were incredible. Carol our server was very nice. Their waffle and omelette stations were sadly closed. read more

After reading the reviews I was not excited to eat here, but we're staying at the hotel and this is where the group we were with chose to eat. Very disappointing. The lobster bisque was a weird salty dark broth, the rolls (which were never actually brought to us because the server set them on an empty table next to us and forgot about them) were hard and unfavorable. The butter was frozen and in no way could be spread onto the hard rolls. When the server discovered the whole basket of rolls on our table she rudely grabbed the basket before everyone at the table had even gotten one. Drinks were slow to be refilled and food was slow to be brought out even though we were one of only two tables in the restaurant (and had made reservations). Brussel sprouts were hard and gross, mac & cheese was odd & crunchy and we were told to cut our steaks with butter knives. Meat was so-so but at least tender. The only plus is the beautiful building it's in. Other than that it's ridiculously priced for the mediocre food and service. read more

Oh my.... I thought I had seen it all until this past Saturday night at the Mac Arthur Room at the Thayer Hotel. It was a new low. Surpassing the Castle Hill Inn debacle from this past summer (see my review separately).We were guests at the hotel and our plan was to have a nice meal in the Mac Arthur Room after a day of sightseeing and go to bed. It was the worst overall dining experience I've had in 10 years. The Dining Room is stunning and deserving of better management. While the room was only half full, it was understaffed and the hostess/managers did nothing but straighten chairs. Our waitress Gerri, simply had too many tables. The staff went out of their way to let us know that they had four weddings at the hotel that day. We were seated promptly, received drinks, ordered and then just sat.. and sat. A couple that came in after us ordered just entrees received their meals and were finished before we were served our appetizers. For appetizers my wife had the Shrimp Cocktail which was fine. I had the $4 Lobster Bisque. It was simply Lobster Bisque thick broth without a chunk of lobster. Drinks sat empty as the staff attended to other tables. We were really getting angry. I saw our entrees come out and just sit in a serving tray. They were covered with a lid. When severed, I immediately felt the plate-- it was cold. My Rib Eye Steak (Choice at $31) was cooked ok but the food service gravy (not Au Jus as listed on the menu) the kitchen had poured over it had cooled and skimmed over. The mashed potatoes-- (food service quality again, ice cream cone scoop-- which I really do not mind) were so cold a pat of butter would not melt when placed on top of them. Naturally when we were done - we sat, I had to get up from out table to ask for the check. The meal was long, drawn out and horrible. "......renowned Executive Chef Brian Aspell" should consider his reputation in putting out food like this in a dining room with obvious service issues. Serving steaks on cold plates... really? I can empathize with the staff who had 4 wedding receptions to serve -- (thanks for letting me know about the hotels workload) but why is this my problem and why do I need be sympathetic? Please if you are accustomed to decent dining - this place will let you down. This meal was the worst part of our West Point trip. Do not eat here. The service and food was terrible. The ribs were extremely over cooked. The baked potato was hard and barely cooked. The salmon was over cooked and dry. With four years left to work here at West Point I can think of no circumstance where I would ever return to this restaurant or recommend it to a friend or colleague. 5 Star General Name - NO STAR RESTAURANT! Over priced and under delivered. Very sad experience for my birthday dinner. Came with my family from the city. For starters, everything took forever to be brought to the table. The waiter Justin kept apologizing saying he didn't know what was taking so long and would leave to check the basement. The service and food killed any ambiance that could've been there!!! The appetizers weren't bad but the entrées were a nightmare! 2 at my table had the pork chop (which was undercooked with a glaze like honey baked ham); Short-rib was ok; and one 14 oz. ribeye - 7 oz were fat & the other grisly meat. Very disappointing! The butter topping added no value to the steak. We asked for substitutes for the sides; the order was all wrong. Everything was under seasoned. The creamed spinach was milk poured on spinach w/ no substance; the mashed potatoes tasted worse than instant potatoes. I cook so I know what mashed potatoes look and taste like. Horrible! The whole order took so long, my family begged me not to say anything as I was about to. We kept thinking it would get better but didn't. For my birthday dessert, I ordered the bread pudding. It took 20 minutes to heat the 'hockey puck' clump and put on a plate. Despicable! We asked for a few of the somewhat palatable things to be packed to go - the items never reached our table! The clincher was when we came in, we were the fifth table with 2 waiters on staff. Thruout the dinner, the hostess, the floor manger & others were assisting the wait staff. You need to plan better. The other waiter Sandy, who never graced our table, saw my husband had an AMEX card in the guest check presenter and rudely and brashly stated as she passed by 'WE DON'T TAKE AMEX!' Was that necessary to be so rude? What happened to customer service? Won't be back and won't recommend. Perhaps they are preparing the cadets for battlefield bad food and service. read more

Came here on a regular Sunday buffet brunch, came here on Mother's Day special, and came here for their Friday night's seafood buffet. This place truly caters to Gods and Generals. The variety of the food choices is not much, but it's satisfyingly pleasing. But with Macarthur's Restaurant, it's not about the quantity, but it's about the quality. Their dinners are amazing but their breakfast is okay at best. I would give their dinners a 5 star and their breakfast a 3 star. The name itself uses MacArthur's name and thus has 5 stars around it not because the restaurant is 5 stars, but because General Mac Arthur was a 5 star general. Venue. The location itself is beautiful with gold designs decorated on the wall. The tables and napkins are set up in a manner where you will feel like you're dining elegantly. They have tables that can seat all parties and easily accommodate a party of 5 or more. Food. Their dinner buffet is amazing. Their steak is cut on the spot. The dishes are neatly labeled and despite being cooked in large proportions, they still have a delectable taste whether it be seafood, meat, carbs, or vegetables. Their breakfast buffet is why this review gets 4 stars. Their scrambled eggs and hash browns don't settle well in the serving pots. In addition, there is few variety for the price you're paying. Service. The waiters and waitresses are normally very kind and always refilling your drinks and taking away your plates. They all are very good at their jobs, but don't always smile. If you go to this restaurant you will definitely see cadets, soldiers, veterans, or anyone related to them. It is always a site to see soldiers in uniform. Do not go here! I don't know where to begin to describe how terribly disappointing it was. Let's start with the service. We had a 630 reservation, not crowded at all yet it took 15-20 minutes to get a drink. And the wine tasted like it came out of a box. The menu was limited and yet they managed to be out of the rib-eye by 630. Apparently they only had 6. This was a Saturday night btw. Zerolux ambiance. No music. Nothing. If you stay at the Thayer do yourself a favor and eat somewhere in town. We had brunch reservations for Sunday which of course I cancelled. Probably fake eggs and bad mimosas. read more

The venue is historic, and worth seeing. I was very hopeful the food would match the overall excitement/hype. It, sadly, did not. I had the Lobster Bisque to start. It was a little thin compared to others I've had, which I actually liked. Flavor was ok, but it was as if it had been in the cooler and they microwaved it. Literally one side of the bowl was cold, one hot. No joke I had to stir it to even the temp. My son had the French Onion, he didn't comment on it really (which means it was fine I suppose). My entrée was the Veal Osso Bucco & my son had the Hudson Valley Duck Breast. My veal, again, seemed prepared hastily. Seems that this wasn't slow cooked and braised, but, microwaved...and curiously, there was zero marrow, but a mushroom in its place...idk. I understand it these are cooked ahead, but at reheat it properly. The cheese grits, you guessed it, felt microwaved. Outer crust/shell was warm, the center was cold. It's not a good day when both people agree that the "hero" of the dish is the broccolini...simply because it was clearly the only thing actually cooked fresh. Yes, that means that the duck was suspect as well. It was served as medallions on what was supposed to be yellow jasmine rice but was clearly the same cheesy grits. Pieces were different temps and some were very chewy/rubbery. I had a couple, lol. For the money they want, I'd recommend hitting the chipotle up the street, you'll be just as satisfied. read more

Rude waitress, broken chairs, so-so salad, entree terrible. How can you screw up Fish and Chips? My wife and I ordered fish and chips, which arrived 35 minutes after we ordered, and the fish was cold and greasy, and the chips were stale fries that had been sitting in the warmer for some time. 15 minutes later our replacement arrive, greasy warm fish portions that were very small and mostly bread, with fries under the fish being warm and the rest being cold. My wife didn't eat, but I ate mine because it was already 2:30 pm. We had arrived at 12:45. Terrible food, terrible service, but spectacular views of Garrison and the Garrison Institute. This restaurant offers a nice view of the Hudson on a fully covered patio. The same menu is offered at the Zulu lounge which is completely open-air. They do an excellent job of adhering to Covid-19 prevention protocols. Unfortunately, the food is truly mediocre. My husband's $49 steak arrived drenched in a gravy. It looked like my much less expensive short ribs - which was so bad that I left more than half. Even my teenaged son thought it was vile. My husband finished his steak, but admitted that he was starved our tempura cauliflower would have been good had it not been DRENCHED in a sauce - what a shame! Food arrived cold, some dishes just failed like a pasta dish with beets, greens and goat cheese that was something a kid might whip up as a class project for Home Economics class. July 2nd we had dinner here. This was my son's last meal with us before he reports for BEAST. It was to be a very special dinner celebrating a very special event. The only thing we enjoyed about the meal was the fellowship. We have reservations for tomorrow for lunch and dinner. We have reservations at The Thayer three more times over this next school year. We will cancel our food reservations at this restaurant and drive to eat anytime we stay at The Thayer. I hate to give bad reviews but there was no excuse for the quality of service, food and the time it took to get our food. Wish our last meal with our son before BEAST would have been memorable in a positive way. Unfortunately we will never be able to get this waste of time back. read more

Hit or Miss!!! In the three meals we ate here, each was very different. Wait and hostess staff covered one another when busy or short staffed. Food was either excellent or terrible. There wasn't an in-between. This was for all: salads had too much dressing, salmon needed specific directions on how to make sure it wasn't over cooked, drinks needed to be refilled by asking for a staff member to come back and fill them, and asking for alternatives felt like we were asking for human sacrifice. Went for Mother's Day brunch and this was our first time at the restaurant. For the elegance and the price, the professionalism of the wait staff did not meet my expectations. We were a 2:15 reservation and waited nearly a half hour on line just to get in. It took an extra 10-15 minutes to be greeted by our server, who was attentive afterwards but lacked polish and sophistication. The food was delicious but our choices were very limited because at the time of the afternoon they were no longer refilling any of the offerings. Good variety across lunch and breakfast options - from prime rib to Apple turnovers. The frittata was surprising in that it had a custard like texture. I really liked it. One of the three worst meals I've ever had. What a shame, since the atmosphere was on the elegant side and the setting quite nice. I had fair warning, though-- on a Saturday night in July the dining room was completely empty, except for my small group of two. (To be fair, there were some people outside on the terrace, dining al fresco.) The problems began right away. First the waitress said they didn't have honey-mustard salad dressing, then she came back later and said they did. When it arrived, it was the hottest I've ever tasted. Our server seemed befuddled and said they'd just whipped it up in the kitchen (using Beelzebub's recipe, apparently). My lettuce wedge was warm and amateurishly served, with about as much elan as you'd expect at Mel's Diner. Our entrees were no better. My filet mignon wasn't cooked at a high enough temperature nor properly rested; one slice and all the juices ran out. Roasted Brussels sprouts were as hard as rocks and inedible. The salmon entree wasn't flaky, but somehow sticky instead, and barely edible. We each received one ordinary roll from a basket and were never offered another. The best part of both our meals was the asparagus. Maybe the chef should take his name off the menu.... When our server asked, we told her our concerns. She didn't know what to say. The manager soon appeared, who was far more empathetic and without our asking reduced the bill by 20 percent. We were very excited to try this restaurant so we went for Sunday brunch. The setting is beautiful overlooking the Hudson. The service for brunch started off well as two servers immediately appeared at our table to pour coffee and mimosas. For the most part, we never saw them again, lol. Never offered a second cup of coffee, never offered us any other drinks, and had to chase the waitress down at the end to get our check. All in all I give the service one star. Very unimpressive. The buffet had some wonderful selections but nothing was amazingly over the top. In fact, every single "hot" item I tried, was in fact cold. Nothing worse then cold buffet food. Eggs were cold, frittata was cold, potatoes were cold, bacon and sausage cold. Come on, just get us some hot food so we don't feel like it was sitting there for hours. For presentation I give them 4 stars. The food was arranged nicely and there were no lines to get to the food. As far as food quality goes, I would give them a 3 (would have been a four if it was warm). Probably would not return again for brunch unless we were guaranteed a seat outside on the balcony in the warmer weather. The view is spectacular. read more

Our reservation was at 10:30 am which is when they open. I think that is a good time because you can get parking and it is not that busy. The dining room is beautiful and the view out the windows of the river was beautiful. We could also walk out the door to the patio and look at the view and walk down some stairs to the lawn along the river to walk around. We were there in December and the lobby was very pretty with a Christmas tree and wreaths and lit garland on the railings. Santa also came into the dining room during brunch. Our waitress (I think her name was Carol) was extremely friendly and cheerful and really enhanced the experience. They had unlimited mimosas and also put a carafe of ice water on the table. I thought the waffles were delicious. My husband said he would avoid them next time. My husband loved the layer cakes. We both loved the hot apple turnovers. My husband thought the breakfast potatoes were too mushy for him, but I thought they were pretty tasty. My husband really liked the honey mustard ham which had pineapples. I really enjoyed the chicken mediera and the blueberry muffins. I wish they would have had french toast or pancakes. All in all a wonderful experience! read more

We went last summer to Macarthur's for a nice dinner out. We were seated outside overlooking the Hudson, and it was beautiful. The service was good. Cold bread and butter are such a pet peeve of mine. Who actually likes eating a cold block of butter?! Either way, I started off with the lobster bisque (just lobster flavor and cream, no actual pieces of lobster) and my boyfriend had the southwest rolls. Those were actually quite flavorful, and the bed of bean salad that the rolls were presented on was also delicious. Our entrees were nothing to write home about. My chicken was over cooked, and his beef was undercooked. For the quality of the entrees, I thought they were a little pricy. read more

The Thayer Hotel is over 200 years old. It is restored, perfectly maintained and pristine. Brunch on Sunday was a very, very nice experience. The MacArthur Dining Room is beautiful. It is a formal Dining Room that has gorgeous views of the Hudson as well as the hotel grounds. The dining room opens on to a covered outdoor formal eating area overlooking the Hudson. During brunch there was a piano player playing on a baby Grand piano and the waiters and waitresses were offering champagne and Mimosas. The food was excellent our favorite being the dill salmon. I have been to many brunches and I rate this one right at the top. Over the next several days, we ate breakfast twice and dinner in the MacArthur Dining Room. Every meal was great and I recommend it highly. read more
