We were there for on August 31, which was apparently a day when not much else goes on at the academy. We had read about needing a real-ID to get through the gates, but they were not checking them that night. The hotel is beautiful. MacArthur's is better than most hotel restaurants we have been to. There were only about five couples dining that evening and all chose to sit out on the terrace under the canopy despite some on and off rain. I had timed our reservation so we would be there for the last hour of daylight -- and it was overcast anyway. Still, the views out over the grounds and over the Hudson River were lovely. We started with the burrata appetizer which we said we would share. They split it on two plates for us which we thought, at first, was two separate full orders because the portions were huge. They assured us that was one order split in half. My wife had the Frenched Chicken breast which she enjoyed greatly. I had the 14oz beef ribeye which was cooked to perfection. I had mentioned in our online reservation that it was our anniversary and an order of their flourless chocolate cake arrived decorated for the occasion, on the house, which was an appreciated gesture. read more

Ambiance was amazing- it's a beautiful setting overlooking the Hudson and the rooms are spectacular. Service was great, our waitress was fantastic and was back and forth often. Our reservation was at 1:30 and they wait down to the minute to seat you- but check in to the restaurant and wander around looking at how beautiful the hotel is until you can be seated. Food: The carving station only had a pork roast (no other carving meats). It was one of the saltiest pieces of pork I ever ate. We complained to the waitress and she said she heard the same complaint last week. The apple raisin compote was good alone, but didn't rescue the saltiness of the meat- but is good on its own or would be good on a waffle or gelato. Chicken osso bucco- meat was tender but flavorless. Manicotti- was probably one of the best on the buffet- could use more sauce but creamy was very good. Salmon- very good Shrimp- good Caesars salad- good Potatoes, bacon- good Sausage- dryish Waffles with bananas foster- delicious. Cannoli- soggy shell and waaaaay too sweet Gelato- very good Key lime pie was overly sweet which somehow made the tart of the pie terrible. No balance whatsoever. Muffin- meh- could take it or leave it. Bloody Mary was good as was the mimosas. Waitress was on top of refilling the mimosa. Historic location. Wanted to love it but couldn't. Avoid at all costs! Poorly run. You may or may not ever get your food! If I had read the Yelp reviews I would have seen a pattern going back years of poor service and meh food, with the Business Manager responding to each review with something like, "I'm sorry your experience did not live up to the excellent service and quality we pride ourselves on. The restaurant is in the historic Thayer hotel at West Point. It had a steakhouse feel with a white tablecloth ambiance with a great view of the river (there is an open-air covered patio with even better views, but too humid for us to be out there. We requested a window table and were seated as requested. Service was warm and friendly, but honestly could have been more attentive - especially when drinks were finished or waiting for the bill. Wine by the glass was fine, but very limited on spirits, especially bourbon. Gentleman Jack was all they had and that of course is a whiskey and not a bourbon. Prices were reasonable, but despite the restaurant not being crowded at all, it was a slow wait for our initial order and refills. To start, we tried the Beet Carpaccio and were not disappointed. The dish was fine to share for two and had several types of thin sliced beats with goat cheese and a delicious dressing. I highly recommend it. We shared a ceasar salad after our appetizer and it was easily big enough for three people. The salad was pretty good, but no anchovies as advertised on the menu and way too many croutons. For our entrees, we had the duck and the roast chicken. Hudson Valley produces fantastic duck, but this was a bit disappointing. While and ok flavor, it was a small portion (only 1 small breast), overcooked beyond medium, and slightly tough. The roasted chicken my wife had was excellent. It was a complete half chicken, so too much for my wife and a to go box was supplied. We ordered some sauteed spinach as a table side and it was perfectly cooked. We tried the homemade rustic apple pie ala mode for dessert. My wife loved it, but I thought the crust was way too soft. Overall, very good flavor though and worth a try. My wife & I went to their Easter Brunch today at MacArthur's Riverview Restaurant in the Hotel Thayer, at West Point. We were lucky & got table # 20, right in front of the window. The facility is magnificent, with old world charm & military paraphernalia. The entire staff was friendly & efficient. Estefani was our server & she was excellent. She constantly came by to make sure we had coffee, mimosas & anything else we might want. The food was delicious & there were enough choices to please even the pickiest eater. They expected 1,200 people for the brunch today, yet it did not seem to phase them at all. More restaurants should be run like this. Can't wait to return. read more

MacArthur's Riverview Restaurant is just now opening post Covid closures. If they've had staffing issues, like most dining establishments, you wouldn't know it! They didn't seem to miss a beat this evening! The dining room overlooks the Hudson River, has a stately, grandeur charm and makes for a special evening out. Right off the bat I had a hit and miss. The Maine Lobster Bisque was a big strike out and two bites was all I could tolerate. A bisque is normally creamy and velvety. This bisque had the consistency of a thick chowder but very heavy on a bland flour roux, seemly no cream and void of any lobster flavor. The server was gracious and removed it from the bill, thank you! Unless the Lobster Bisque is improved, it should be removed from the menu. The home run of the evening was the fantastic Candied Bacon: applewood smoked with a lovely, slightly caramelized whiskey-turbinado sugar glaze. The side of house pickles were a wonderful addition, and I'd love to take home a jar! I enjoyed my entree of half of free range chicken, herb roasted. It was tender, moist, flavorful and beautifully plated on a bed of mashed potatoes. The side of "charred asparagus" was thankfully perfectly cooked. A difficult feat because it's easy to overcook asparagus when cooking this technique. The server was attentive and friendly! read more

Beautiful setting. Service was poor. When ordering drinks they did not provide a drink menu so you had no idea the brands of wines available nor did the waitress. Took over 40 minutes to get our drinks and had to flag down waitress to make her aware we still did not have drinks. They did comp our drinks given the experience. Our waitress was not very personable or attentive. Portions were large. Clam chowder was nothing special. Wedge salad and short rib were very good. Seafood risotto was inedible. We have been up at West Point celebrating my son's Ring weekend and just had the most amazing brunch at MacArthur's. We had a large party and the service was wonderful. Everyone was so friendly and attentive. The food was absolutely delicious and there are so many options that even our guest with food allergies was able to enjoy a variety of things. Just came from a family celebration. Very disappointing brunch. Mediocre food and non existent service.

This was a nice restaurant setting with a beautiful interior and high ceilings. We loved most of what we ordered (with everything ordered being the favorites of our waitress, we took her word for the best dishes on the menu). The sea scallops were cooked perfectly, just a little too much salt for my liking. The Cedar River strip steak was also very delicious but again was a little too salty for my liking. The truffle Mac and cheese had a good truffle flavor that you could taste but I was not too much of a fan of the cheese sauce accompanying the Mac and cheese and would likely not order that side dish if I came again. The salad in my opinion was also not worth it. I was expecting the wedge salad to come out in a wedge head of lettuce version but instead it came out as romaine hearts (which I am not a huge fan of). OMG so much potential just WASTED - I mean honestly McDonalds does a better breakfast. This place could be AMAZING.... but it's not.. it's terrible. And given the incredible building and location that somehow makes it even worse... Think about the worse cheap crappy motel breakfast you've ever had... this will be worse. The buffet appeared to have been sitting for an hour without being refreshed, ie the cheese slices were looking waxy and the desserts looking droopy. We ordered a la carte instead. The service was atrocious. The restaurant was not particularly busy the afternoon we dined, yet it took 2 hours to complete our meal. Our server disappeared for a half hour at a time. I really want to like this restaurant. It has an iconic location, great ambiance in a historic hotel. I've had steaks a couple times and they are flavorless and seems to be a low grade of beef. The selection of appetizers could be better, but probably wouldn't be an issue if they were not so generic tasting. The craft cocktails were fine, but they really need to stand out better for such an historic location. I also feel like the food is prepared by cooks rather than by a high-end chef. I would suggest that MacArthur's consider hiring a top-tier chef to match its great historic location. UPDATE: Ginoh Luz, the MacArthur Director of Food and Beverage Services, reached out to me after reading my earlier comments. Ginoh explained that the poor attitude and unacceptable food that my spouse and I experienced was unfortunately due to a number of reasons that unfortunately, simultaneously occurred, and invited us to return another day for Sunday brunch. What a difference! The food was tasty and replenished, and the service excellent. A completely different experience, and one similar to the brunches we have enjoyed at the McArthur in the past. Ginoh Luz is a treasure, and an enormous asset to the MacArthur restaurant. We will continue to go there and enjoy, so long as he is in charge. read more

The restaurant is on the left, half flat down from the lobby of the Thayer Hotel, which is on the compound of the United States Military Academy. Exposed brick walls, fresh flowers - mostly carnations, but overall it feels stuffy. $11 house wine: Merlot is better than Pino Noir. The crab cakes (enough for a main course) are good, so is the salmon but the veggie cassoulet is subpar, tasteless. Each table has a bell (not an astray) - I thought it's pretty military-ish. We didn't have to use it because the restaurant was very empty, even on a game night. Patton's Tavern is on the same level as the lobby but it was filled to the brim when we got there - probably due to the game: ice hockey team vs SHU. read more

SAVE YOUR MONEY AND EAT OUT IN TOWN OR ACROSS THE WATER IN WESTCHESTER. EXTREMELY BAD SERVICE. There were 20 of us there as part of a wedding rehearsal dinner. They gave us one (1) slow, confused-looking waitress to serve us. We were sitting down for nearly 2 HOURS (no exaggeration) before the food started coming out in dribs and drabs. Some of us were nearly done eating by the time others finally got their food. Meanwhile, for the 2 hours before the food came out, all we got was ONE roll each and ONE round of drinks. Sad. FYI, we are a very laid back and tolerant group of people. No Karens here. We were just happy to be with family on this occasion, but they really tried our patience and our good will. And if all that wasn't bad enough, they threw us in the corner of a HOT room. Meanwhile, on the other side of the restaurant and the lobby it was nice and cool. What makes it all the more insulting is their lack of appreciation for all the business we gave them. The wedding party accounts for more than 20 rooms @ 2 nights each. If that hotel has any decency, they would comp the bride and groom for their hotel room for BOTH nights. read more

We were here many years ago before the "new-to-us" renovation for Sunday brunch buffet which was very good. This visit was shortly after their reopening the week before. We were informed at our visit yesterday that the Sunday champagne brunch buffet is up and running again. We stopped at the Thayer on the spur of the moment driving back home from NYC and because of the weather we chose to eat inside at the MacArthur. (Even with the lousy weather the rooftop Zulu bar and lounge was open.) We called from inside the hotel to make a reservation and the person who answered said she would have to check if there was a table for two available. (See pictures). It was cold and rainy yesterday and the only difference between inside and outside was the no rain inside. The air movement was chilled air and there was never a feeling of warm air. We never removed our light jackets. The menu is rather limited. I am not sure if that is because things are not up and running to full capacity yet or not and I also don't know what their pre-COVID-19 menus looked like. We were waited on promptly (see pictures) and drink orders were taken. Our food orders were taken a bit after. Wait staff offered a veal special with limited availability as it was the special on Thursday also. We ordered the veal and a scallop entree. A few minutes later wait staff returned and said she was misinformed and there was no more veal left. We both got the scallops. The scallops arrived. There were 5 sea scallops seared to perfection surrounding a conglomeration of spinach, roasted small potatoes and a certain bacon with a delicious sauce. The food was filling and . While we were eating we were wondering where the bread was. We asked the wait staff near the end of our meal and were told it was not served due to COVID-19 precautions. Welp......I have to say that we have been eating out since it was ok in NY and we have always had bread at a meal where you would expect bread to be served. Hmmmmm.... So, in the end I chose 4 stars because I couldn't choose 3 1/2 stars. We thought the food was very good but the chill in the air, the lack of bread and the perceived (by me) false implication of "we're really busy" reservation process brought it down to 4-ish. And not that we were craving any, we were offered coffee or tea but not a dessert menu. We will probly go back for the champagne brunch at some point. This bad meal was being served while at the table next to us the "manager sat handing out with other employees who acted as though they were on vacation. But.....they really need more waitstaff to serve coffee, tea and cocktails, etc. This was the only downside - the staff were very pleasant, but way overworked. ​I was there on the evening of the June 16 and think every single person who dined in the restaurant that evening deserves an apology. Many people there were guests at the same wedding I attended and everyone had the same experience, some people waited 2 hours for their food which was underwhelming and in many cases cold. 3 of this 6 dishes at my table were poorly prepared and cold, the dishes were either sent back for no substitution as hope had been lost or eaten begrudgingly as hope had been lost. Getting in is a bit of a pain, but that's to be expected because of the extra security required (this restaurant is on the West Point campus). Once inside, service is friendly albeit a bit slow. The servers are very friendly, but all seem just a bit frazzled even though the restaurant was empty (total of 4 two to four top tables at the busiest while we were there). The lobster bisque was overly salty and barely a hint of any actual lobster-- very disappointing, especially because the waitress forgot to put this in when we ordered and we had to remind her about it. The salad with the buratta was very yummy. The buratta was creamy and sweet. My husband ordered crab cakes for his appetizer, and he said it tasted good, but he wished it were a slightly bigger portion for the price. The short ribs I ordered were rich and flavorful. And the view! The view of the Hudson is refreshing and the grounds behind the hotel is gorgeous, so if the weather is agreeable, try to get a seat on the patio. 3 stars because of the meh-ness of the soup and the sloppy service. read more
