My wife and I have been attending Lulu's restaurant for over 25 years. We've seen it grow from owner to owner UNTIL the busboy from the start took over and it's was paradise ever since then, until now. Although, Michael took over ownership eventually and along the way he hired his two brothers & family to work for him. But when when the pandemic hit as most businesses, we all had to sit outside. No big deal. We had no problem supporting our go to nearby restaurant. But AFTER the pandemic died down the owner went thru a divorce. Now prices went up like we've all have gone and continue to fight the inflation. Okay to the point, today after multiple employees have been laid off and or they're hours cut like almost every mom and pop business has. Right?! Today when my neighbor and I went in to enjoy a refreshing cold beer, the regular bartender called in sick. Now we have have one of the owner's family and more they pitch in to fulfil the positions. "Homo" (Homero) tells the current (family) to charge me $7:50 for a bottle of imported beer. WHF!?! When I went to the middle brother to complain, he shook his head and said just give me $5.00. I said I'll give you a tip next time I see you. I LOVE EFRAIN! Again, I understand as a family business, it's got to be hard to know all these precious jobs will be lost. But don't take it out on the LGBTQIA community. Not fair HOMO!!!! MOFO!!!! HOW DARE YOU!!!!! I am so sorry your lease will be up JUNE 2024. I came here for breakfast on Sunday morning with my daughter and my boyfriend, and we were seated in the very back where they had the heater on so hot you could barely breath. After being sat for 3-5 minutes without any service we noticed a pile of ants on the table. We flagged down a bus boy who re sat is at another table and told me they were going to clean the ants. After 10 minutes goes by no one came over to clean up the ants and a hostess sat a family with a little baby at the table that still had ants. Being distracted by their crying baby they didn't notice the ants for a couple of minutes. Our waitress was super rude and burned out. By the time our food came out, which was truly truly terrible I ordered the Mexican omelet without ground beef. It came out tasting like straight burnt onions and corn tortillas... Ick! The hashbrowns were so bad. They were mushy in the middle and burnt on the outside, literally the worst hashbrowns ever! And the biscuits and gravy... We're honestly yellow and in edible. Which sucks when your really hungry! After they finally moved the other family from the table now crawling in ants, they finally wiped down the table and cleaned off the ants. Lulus is one of our new go to spots. We've only had their breakfast and can't wait to try their lunch/dinner. We get the amazing cinnamon raisin French toast and chicken fried steak. Yesterday I decided to take home some carrot cake since it's my all time favorite cake and desert. I got home and had a bite and couldn't believe how delicious it was! I had to finish the whole slice! It's getting 1 stars because of how long I've eaten here and loveD them. We sat for 10 minutes before our server came by, and it wasn't busy in the section we were in. Took our order, drinks (1 coffee and 2 water) dropped 10 minutes later. Food dropped and 5 minutes went by before we got silverware, that we had to ask for. My hubs ate his chicken fried steak and waffle with his coffee spoon because he was starving and by the time silverware were dropped, at the end of the table, away from us, he was half way done. Server saw this and didn't phase her. WTF ???? His waffle was cold to the touch AND inside. My omelet was burnt outside while the veggies were raw inside. The country potatoes had a sour taste, like spoilage. Never asked if he wanted his coffee refilled or if the food was fine seeing that I didn't eat and pushed my plate to the edge of our table. Never asked if I wanted something to drink when I said to start me with water while I look / decide on the bar drinks. Went up to the front desk to pay and sharing with with lady that seemed like the manager (Latina, older about late 40s to about 50ish, dark hair, black polo and glasses), she had not a single care of our experience, instead told me that she took 10% ($3) off our bill, like I should be grateful, for cold, burnt and spoiled food with bad service. She was the worse and the reason for this review. I'm a senior manager that comes from a large restaurant company that is 210 stores, nationwide, so I know guest relations When I stated a recognition of our experience would have sufficed, she gave me a cold stare and said "ok". WTF kind of customer care is that ??? Such a sad pathetic way to treat ANY guests. Just ordered breakfast through UberEATS for my bf and I since I am stuck at home with a horrible cold. When we got the food it did not look nor smell too bad. Once we tried it felt like they add a lot of butter and other stuff to make their products. For example my eggs tasted more like butter then actual eggs. The pancakes I had had so much whip cream that it did not make it enjoyable. After less then an hour both my bf and I have an upset stomach after eating from this place. So this is my first and last time eating from here, feels like a waste of money and definitely don't need something to make me feel worse then I am. read more

Later called rest to ask for special order, Efrain answered and later i found out he also was one if the managers!! He was so sweet and accommodating, food came on time and it WAS amaaaaaazing!!! I kid you not, i used to live in London and the Fish and chips we ordered was how i remembered it 40 yrs ago!! This was once a very good place. Their food has gone downhill a bit. The French onion soup has no liquid and entirely too salty. I'd driven past LuLu's hundreds of times and ended up going in because they were one of the first places open after the initial quarantine lockdown. The waitstaff are friendly and accommodating. The decor is interesting - airplane themed with intricate model airplanes hanging from the ceiling and flight memorabilia on the walls. The menu offers comfort food and it's decent. I can recommend the nachos - one order can comfortably feed 2 people. The standouts are the desserts - I don't know where they get these, but they are excellent. The cake portions are LARGE; about 6 inches tall - the kind that can only be served on its side because it's too big to stand upright. The cinnamon rolls are regular size with a generous dollop of icing and are obviously home made (you know how some look store-bought? These don't). Hands down favorite is the caramel brownie. People people this is the quintessential diner, bar and grill. It not fancy but it is unique with its airport themed decor and great service. They serve a wide variety of foods and beverages. How to categorize Lulu's, I see it's listed as an American Traditional restaurant and "sports bar". I am not sure I get the sports bar tag that but 1 out of two ain't bad. I have only been here for breakfast and lunch and not much else. It is hard to find a decent place for breakfast beyond IHOP or Denny's in this area so I figured why not give Lulu's a go, it had been eons since I had dined there. They offer a decent selection for breakfast and some items you may not find everywhere. Case in point the Chorizo Scramble. Minced chorizo and eggs just like the description. Chorizo can be oily and thankfully this was not overly fatty or oily with the right mix of egg and sausage. Old, I mean OLD, school diner/coffee shop spot right next to Van Nuys airport. The manager is always great and welcoming when you enter, and the servers, though often hit-and-miss with timeliness, are very nice and helpful, especially to your elderly grandmother. The food is pretty good - dare I say, surprisingly good, because they could probably 'mail it in' with their clientele and have it not effect their business. The BBQ is made on-site and is really good, as is the broasted chicken. Everything else is standard, but it's a good institution to have in Van Nuys. Enjoy! read more

A visit last week reminded of why I am not that big of a fan any longer. We came in for breakfast and ordered the usual breakie things. omelettes, pancakes and eggs, combo's and 1 giant cinnamon roll. This used to be a slam dunk for this place, breakfast that is, with lines out the door. Something is missing from the days gone by, the hash browns or country style potato's lacked any zip and were bland. Yes the portions were still large but the flavor in nearly all of our items was equally flat. It seems a bit on the dingy side and looks like a make over is in order. Sadly, I thought I would have rather brought the family to Denny's ? WTH ? I did a DoorDash order. The ribs, chicken, were very good. The TRi tip was dry. I ordered pulled pork and sausages, and did not get them. I got onion rings , bread instead. When I was young my family used to frequent this place as there weren't too many restaurants in the area to choose from and the portions were excellent for the price. I don't know what happened in the several years that I didn't go here but the food has gone downhill. I ordered a beef dip sandwich and I wish I could say that there was anything good about it. I was honestly tempted after having a tri tip sandwich from JV's in Calabasas the following day to take a picture and show it to you guys so you could see how messed up your version really is. We're talking one thin slice of low quality overcooked roast beef on soggy bread with tasteless au jus. My Mother ordered a philly cheesesteak sandwich which looked marginally better but she was as equally displeased. I am sad about this because I have fond memories of going here with my grandparents as a kid. My grandma always ordered a monte cristo sandwich and a bowl of french onion soup, usually burning herself on the melty cheese on top and never finishing the sandwich yet always coming back for it time and again. I will give it a shot for breakfast as some of my better experiences here were with your homestyle American breakfast menu. Oh, and when someone comes in to pick up an order and is really nice to you, please have the common courtesy as they are leaving to actually turn around and say goodbye cordially. I went here for the first time in roughly 28 years, and it's still solid. The interior looks pretty much the same with the rose pink banquettes and stained glass window - smaller than I remember, but I'm somewhat bigger now too so... I got the avocado BLT with fries - the fries (similar to Burger King, but better and more flavorful) surprisingly held up better as leftovers than the BLT, but maybe the flour seasoning on the fries contributed to that. I did eat and enjoy the leftover half of the sandwich, but the bread (a thickly cut & toasted sourdough) got particularly tough as the hours passed. I was mildly jealous of my brother's monte cristo sandwich plate, which looked like chips with triangular fish - however, it was really a club-style turkey, ham and swiss sandwich covered in egg batter and deep-fried(!!), then dusted with confectioner's sugar, served with a side of jam. Damn. Why oh why oh why was I ever so silly as to lack an appreciation for cheese back in my early misguided youth...oh well, next time. I'm not sure if they've always had a full bar, but they do now, and if I could, I would've taken full advantage of the $0.99 mimosas and bloody marys. Alas, it was not the weekend and I was heading back north that day so it wasn't meant to be. Excellent giant onion rings, and some of the best fried zucchini that I have ever had (sliced wide and long). The Bleu cheese and ranch dressings are thick and delicious and is great when you sprinkle the coarse cracked pepper on it. The food here is surprisingly better then IHOP and Denny's. it has a really cute vintage diner feel and cool airplanes everywhere that fits in because it's close to van nuys airport. great place to bring little boys.
