Why did I not know that this place has karaoke. It was a busy one today and the last stop was Home Depot, again. As Lulus was right across the street, a nice cold one was brewing. The place looked empty as there was only give or take 4 cars in the whole massive parking lot. Didn't bother us as we only wanted to stop in for a quick cold one before heading back. Well, they were a few people at the bar. From what I get from it, they were regulars. Also a different bartender than usual. Chatted up with him a bit and found out that he normally works the restaurant section and was taking over for someone lately. Well, it was karaoke which we didn't not know. More like the same one who was up and singing. It's not a younger crowd which I believe they're trying to lean in on that. Trying to mix up the crowd. Also we caught the last of happy hour. I thought it ended at 6 but this place goes on till 7:30. Drink specials on drafts beer, specialty drinks and so on. And half off on appetizers which is a major plus except the sampler platter. Got a cold one which lead to wanting something to munch on. I do like their fried mozzarella sticks with warm marinara sauce and the fried zucchini with ranch sauce. A good appetizer item and for the price, it was perfect. Cheesy thick mozzarella sticks which were perfect with the sauce. Also the portion was great for both dishes. Quick and easy snack, can't beat that. Deep fried food which calls for another round. The crowd was pretty fun. Same two guys up and singing. They were having a good time which made the vibe pretty chill and mellow. Cheap eats and drinks and it goes in till 7:30. Can't beat that. There's plenty of parking in the lot. There's also a restaurant which I I believe ive eaten at over 15 years ago. We normally stop by for a beer if we're in the area. Service was great. I don't live nearby, but I pass by Lulu's almost daily to and from work. I often wondered if this place was even open. Anyway,... I was there midday for a work event and my expectations were low. Unfortunately, this place was abysmal. There were a variety of appetizers ordered for the table that were clearly previously frozen and not great. Potato skins, chicken strips, mozzarella sticks, wings etc. all blah. I tried a mozzarella stick and didn't finish it. My workmate across the table ordered a salad of some kind that arrived slightly brownish, wilted and it had a bonus HAIR in it. She sent it back and ordered a chicken parm to-go. Yikes. The chicken parm looked not so good.. I ordered a NY steak "RARE" as I know most places will overcook it just a bit. It arrived shockingly thin (26 dollars!) and very much well done. Mashed potatoes & gravy were cold and tasted like they both came from a box. And the veggies were limp and oily. Sigh... They did have bottled Pellegrino so that was a solitary positive thing. This is a perfect example of place with a very large menu that can't possibly do everything properly. And unfortunately, they couldn't do much of anything right. Servers were struggling to serve us and I understand how that can be difficult. They did their best. Our group was seated on the semi-outdoor patio and there were many mismatched chairs. Upon closer inspection, Lulu reminds me of a Hobbit like structure with undulating roof line, round, red brick lined window, and organic, earth tone interior. It only needs a round door entrance. I would imagine Bilbo Baggins would dine here. Many different environments so you can sit on tall stools at the small bar, main dining with standard tables, banquet hall, outdoor patio. Theme is airplanes since Lulu sits near the edge of Van Nuys airport. The menu is mostly American diner fare. But what caught my eye was the Jambalaya on the menu. Thanks to Yelpers who took detailed photos to see if this Jambalaya were composed competently. We're not in Southern Louisiana in places like Lafayette, Duson. Rayne, Saint Martinville, but considering we were in Van Nuys, California, Jambalaya here is definitely a must get. The roux is not smokey, nor redolent with butter, but seems more of a vegetable oil and flour mix. The thickened, dark sauce, which may be fortified by soy sauce, has a good fond de cuisine Umami. The Cajun-Créole Mirepoix or the Aromatic Holy Trinity of onion, bellpepper, celery is well represented. Two, whole shrimp shell on, chicken breast strips which were meaty & moist. Traditionally there would be Andouille sausage, but what seems like dense, savory Italian sausage bits were there to add a bit more chaw with flavours of porkiness, fennel and black pepper. Standard is rice, which I have plenty at home. So the taciturn waitress suggesting linguine pasta, that was not quite al dente, was a good suggestion. Service is adequate. You don't get the feeling of a friendly small town diner. If you're a single diner, this isn't the place for even a bit of short, small talk. Basically, you're just a number. Only for the Jambalaya, Lulu gets a B- for effort. May be the best thing on the menu that has some culinary imagination instead of standard diner schlock. 4- stars read more

I've driven past this place for the past 6 years or so, and never bothered to check it out. So me and my family decided to try it this Friday for something new and comforting. And to say this place was comforting would be an understatement! Everything from the decor, to the servers and the food felt like we were all back in the 80s & 90s. Huge portion sizes, friendly staff, and a great atmosphere for a place that's been around since the 60s. For a first timer, I can definitely say I'll be back, either on my own, or with other family! We came for Father's Day brunch and luckily there was no wait! The service and servers were pleasant and accommodating. There was a few hiccups with some sides missing but they fixed that right away. Restaurant is a little outdated but I guess that's the vibe with all the old school pictures and planes. The entrance is also not very welcoming. The food was good, standard no complaints really but nothing outstanding. Just a pretty good diner feed! I enjoyed the raisin French toast it was pretty good nothing crazy. I understand the authenticity of Lulu's as a locals diner and I've been here a handful a times but my recent visit... man. We were part of a group of about 16 people. Since it was earlier in the morning I wasn't too hungry so I thought ordering some chicken tenders would be a good idea. I have also been craving some nachos and shared that with my sister. The orders were all taken, everything was correct and the food was brought out in a timely manner. Things were great until the chicken tenders and the nachos arrived. The nachos were really sad looking. To me it seemed like someone just plopped some items over chips and called it a day. There wasn't enough cheese to even call it nachos, plus what little cheese that was there wasn't even melted correctly. Then we have the chicken tenders. I was confused if it was chicken tenders because it looked more like fish and chips. The batter was very bready and some parts were undercooked. Decided to tear through and just eat the chicken parts but that wasn't good either. I couldn't even tell you what kind of dipping sauce they provided was. Overall the service was great and I am glad that Lulu's is still around serving the locals. I only gave it 2 stars because our server was nice enough. The food was mediocre at best. I ordered the chicken sandwich but with nothing on it. It still arrived with everything on it minus the sauce (what part of nothing on it is so hard to understand?). We were there around 4:30 on a Saturday, there was one other table with one person at it so not busy. The most IRRITATING part of our visit was the bartender. He kept meandering around the restaurant singing to the music. Not just singing, singing LOUD. Very obnoxious. I know there was only 2 tables occupied but come on, nobody needs to hear the bartender annoyingly singing for the whole restaurant to hear. Welp, I tried again. Upon returning something to Home Depot - we came to Lulu's for breakfast. I have to say I wasn't pleased. I've not been here for lunch, so as a breakfast place, I'm disappointed. Not with the idea of the menu but of the execution of the dish I chose. I chose the Bear breakfast, over medium eggs, hash brown well done, cinnamon raisin French toast. Hubby chose chicken fried steak, home potatoes. He was okay with his. First, coffee. Water. We both chose a morning cocktail. Me a mimosa, hunny a Bloody Mary. His Bloody Mary was good. Mimosa came with ice. I was confused. I could tell the orange juice was not sweet. So when you have two bitters and it starts to water down, there's no interest in drinking it. Half way through drink I stopped. Focused on coffee. Two different sized coffee mugs. Hubby grabbed the bigger one, and I got the small one. When it came time for another cup, it took awhile for a refill. I usually get three to four cups of coffee at breakfast, I got one and a half. Why the difference in cup sizes? How do you want your eggs? Over medium. Please do not ask, if you cannot deliver them as asked. I got over easy. Yuk! Over easy is barely cooked runny runny egg with eggy mucus boogers all over. Over medium is egg whites cooked to perfection. No boogers, egg yolks are thick and creamy and a controlled run. Well done hash browns, is crisp crispy dark golden brown slight fluff in the middle. This came burnt casserole all fluff and burnt, no crispiness! Black. Gross. Oh and cold. If it's burnt why were the hash browns cold??? Made no sense. Chewy fatty bacon, cold. Okay f this, I'll taste the French toast. Omg the cook sucks! You can't even make a French toast. Or the bread is super old. One or the other. A French toast is custard, not egg. A custard is half milk half egg and a dash of cinnamon and I throw in a teaspoon of sugar, so that on its own, with no syrup you get a batter, that bread lightly soaks in and isn't scrambled eggs on bread. I took it all home to finish it the way I would eat it. Then piece de resistance! I lifted the empty plate to stack for easy table cleaning. What do I get on my fingers?!? Avocado. This is a diner style restaurant with a diverse menu of everything from Mexican food to BBQ. They do excellent breakfast dishes eggs potatoes and prepared any way you'd like. It is a long standing spot that is great for a meeting spot when you have a group and need to have a brunch or to meet with friends midway in the valley. Lulus has been here for many years with ample parking and large comfortable seating. I give them a solid thumbs up for food and service. read more

First time review, so I may change stars later. Lulu's was convenient for a late night stop between two locations. We were seated immediately, and it was not too busy. There was variety in the menu and reasonable prices. One lady in our group ordered the tostadas, about $17, while the rest of us had soup. Her tostada was huge and packed with vegetables and steak slices. One gentleman did not care for the tortilla soup, but he was not familiar with it and didn't know what to expect. The signature onion soup was very flavorful, but it would be better with some steak bits and Gruyère instead of mozzarella. We will go back to try other items, especially dessert. read more

I've been meaning to write this review for a while. As a server for 15 years turned restaurant investor and owner for the last 20 years? I was really looking forward to going to a mom & pop restaurant in greater Los Angeles area that I haven't been to before. I came with a big group on MLK day, and we were seated out on the patio because the weather was amazing. I was already prepared to give our waitress Sylvia the benefit of the doubt because every server has been stuck in the weeds with a large party on a busy holiday, but that changed VERY quickly. Sylvia ignored our requests for drink refills constantly to the point that we got sick of waiting and had to go inside the restaurant to ask OTHER staff who weren't our server for refills. After over an hour of waiting for my food, Sylvia brought out a plate that even wasn't mine, and she did the same to a number of others in our group. She couldn't keep our orders straight, she wasn't around for us to give the food back and tell her that, so it was just a mess, one that could have been avoided with a better server. To make matters worse? She claimed the delay was from the kitchen being overwhelmed, and I would have believed that if the plate I was given wasn't SCORCHING hot while the food itself was mildly warm. Meaning she left our food up under the heat lamps for an excessive period of time, then proceeded to blame others. As a 35 year veteran of this industry? I can confidently say with absolute certainty that those kinds of shortcomings don't come from being busy, they came from Sylvia's blatant negligence thus why she attempted to lie her way out of it. There are two types of servers when automatic gratuity is included on a restaurant bill. The first type go above and beyond, and work hard for their tip which shows their efforts throughout the meal. The second type like Sylvia? They do the bare minimum because they know they'll still be tipped regardless of their poor performance. She barely smiled, she acted like every request we had was an incredible insignificance, and if one of the servers at my restaurant treated a large party the way Sylvia treated us? They wouldn't be given the privilege of serving another big group again. Period. I'm going back soon because I want to give this place a fair shot considering I was disappointed in the service we received, not the restaurant itself, but I'll make sure not to sit in Sylvia's section. Word of advice to management and ownership? Hire servers that are competent and capable, because I assure you, Sylvia isn't doing you any favors. read more

Experience/food was better than before but they came to bus the table while we were still there. I don't mean just clearing dishes. I mean clearing the table completely with us standing there. One of our party went to the restroom and left her leftovers on the table. Bus boy almost took the containerand tossed it. My leftovers and a cup of diet coke I had to go almost got tossed. We went for breakfast and were craving a traditional American diner breakfast. Lulu's nailed it. They have a extensive breakfast menu with many egg and pancake options. I had the meat scramble with biscuits and gravy. It was fabulous. The hash browns were cooked perfectly. The biscuits were very good and while the gravy was a bit thin, it has great flavor. My wife had the bacon and avocado omelette which she really enjoyed. It was huge and she took half of it home. It was still great the next day! The service was prompt and professional. Horrible experience with online ordering through yelp/grubhub. Their menu isn't right. They no longer serve gluten free pancakes. The woman called me and off bat was high volume "WE don't HAVE GLUTEN FREE PANCAKES". So I was calm and said ok, please issue my refund. That's when it went left. She outright said NO. Emphatically. And told me she would provide me a normal pancake or I could take the time to call yelp/grubhub to get a refund as she wouldn't be issuing one. Eating a normal pancake would hospitalize me. No issuing a refund when you aren't providing the product or service is loony tunes to me. And yelling at me and refusing to help is horrible service. read more

Straightforward diner in Van Nuys. Cute airplane theme, as it's near the airport. When I arrived it was pretty empty. All the customers seemed to be regulars coming for years. Not a very bustling scene for a Saturday morning breakfast. The service here was great. Our waitress made sure our coffee cups were never empty. The food on the other hand was a little disappointing. My omelette was a little overdone and didn't have a ton of flavor going on. The cheese was poorly melted and wasn't very tasty. The menu had a ton of options like sandwiches, salads and more. I would maybe come back when I have a hankering for something simple like a BLT, otherwise this wouldn't be my first choice for breakfast. Plenty of parking available. This place is on point!! This place is way unassuming. In fact I have been driving by here for years and never ever thought of stopping by. On this day I was at Sky Zone around the corner and we decided to just pop over here for a bite since it was close and the reviews were good. Well not only is this place unassuming but it is a a true diamond in the rough! Everything was perfection. Top diner in this area or in Los Angeles period! Parking is easy. The service is top notch. Everyone is so nice. It is a tad drab in the inside but again do not judge a book by its cover, its clean and that's what matters. The food here is amazing. Have been coming back here weekly. Came here several times now with some guys. It's a solid diner with a large menu. The food is either a hit or miss, but I always seem to come back. You'll get your money worth's of quantity, and it will fill you up. Maybe bloat. I really appreciate the convenience. You can get breakfast, lunch or dinner at varying points of the day. If everyone in your group feels like getting something different, Lulu's is a safe bet to satisfy everyone. The restaurant has a parking lot on site with lots of space available. The number of seats available matches the parking. You can choose to sit indoors or outdoors. It is pretty big, so it's possible your server might forget about you if you're in a remote corner of the restaurant (it happened to us once lol). read more

The price for the Thanksgiving dinners did increase nominal, however I'm going to still say, very small portions for a man!! For women they are fine. The quality of the food is good, but they do have restaurants coffee shops that serve quality, with larger portions!! Kee in mind they do get a crowd here of mostly elderly patrons, the 80 to a 100 bunch, and for them the portions as well are fine. The server tonight a female not very good, no personality, no warmth, not welcoming, time to retire!! I would gladly pay more per dinner with larger potions. Everything on the plate is small!! A small potion diners paradise, for value for me not good 3 stars. again let me repeat, the food is good!
