Millie's is a cute classic diner with ample parking right off the corner of Balboa and Vanowen. Its modest outside and faded sign hides a vibrant and bustling interior this Sunday morning when we came by. We were quickly seated in a booth and wow! The menu is huge. So many pages had me feeling like I had not adequately studied for an exam. My wife is in love with corn beef hash--if it is available she will be ordering it. She acquired a table pancake as part of her CBH order, and I at Ana's recommendation got the chilaquiles, which were very good! They had the right mix of tortillas, beans, egg, and not too saucy. She brought some "spicy" salsa with a bit of a kick--not enough for me but enough for my wife--next time I want some REAL spice, Ana!! :) As I am rather large and was rather hungry, I ordered an additional two scrambled eggs to add to the chilaquiles so if that's you consider adding eggs to the initial order. It was a lot of food, make no mistake. The plates on the first page are certainly ample. The atmosphere is cute. Lots of Knick knacks and pictures on the wall, kids from a baseball team running around, and plenty of people who had retired before you were born shuffling about and opening the blinds to see the menu better. We were very well taken care of. I would say the food is 3.5-4 stars, definitely solid. But the service really puts it up to 5 stars, Ana took the time to meet us and I know she expects us back soon! read more

Food lacked flavor and the pancake syrup was flavorless, cheap and runny. My sausage links were soggy and room temperature. My husband enjoyed the freshly squeezed orange juice. It's still pretty much the same as I remembered it. Your classic homely dinner vibe. As it was still pretty early, it wasn't that busy. Menu did seem to have quite more choices this time. Food wise, it's your typical diner meal. The fried chicken meal was ok, served with two choices side and a side of cornbread. Also, they did have a few soup choices on hand which is good. Millie's is an old-school diner/coffee shop offering traditional fare. It's clean and nicely kept, the wait staff is friendly, and the cooks move swiftly, putting the food out at quite a clip. You get the sense they have spent a good many years feeding breakfast and lunch to people with limited time. They have all the usual breakfast options, including some very creative omelets and specialty items like chicken fried steak, a chorizo egg bowl, and even a breakfast plate built around a fresh baked cinnamon roll. I ordered a simple dish of bacon & eggs with a toasted English muffin. The eggs were cooked exactly as I'd asked, but my crispy bacon was clearly made crispy in the deep fryer. As I wasn't in a rush, I'd have much preferred the bacon (always par cooked in a diner such as this) had been brought up to temp and texture on the grill. By contrast, my English muffin was under done, barely toasted. I had opted for no potatoes, so I can't speak to their flavor (though they looked good on plates passing by me) -- and to their credit, I was offered several side options instead of potatoes (I just wasn't wanting any today). Millie's will give you a good, breakfast at a reasonable price with quick and friendly service, but they could improve their execution a tad, especially when it's not very busy (as was the case today). read more

The entire visit was a pleasant experience. We were greeted, sat, helped in a timely manner. The service was great. The thing i can't get over is that my meal was hot (temperature), I mean hot, the whole time i was eating it! They must heat the plates. I LOVE it! I was there for breakfast (veggie benedict). Fantastic experience eating breakfast at the one and only Millie's. On the road north clear of the LA traffic we stopped for breakfast at this old style diner. The menu wasn't too special, but the product was very good and the service was exceptional. Our arrival at brunchyime meant that we missed any breakfast rush. I ordered a nice egg and kielbasa sausage plate with country potatoes and grilled onions and peppers. It was a good start to the day. The eggs were great, the sausage and grilled papers mixed well with the potatoes. The coffee was hot and bottomless. The kids ate of the kids' menu. They both opted for the build your own breakfast that came with eggs (cooked to their choice), pancakes, and hash. Nothing was left on their plates either... no complaints there. Service was fantastic. We didn't have to wait for a seat, and after we were seated we were doted upon for our drinks and our orders. They had some daily specials posted on a sandwich board at the front, but we were there ready for breakfast to get us ready for the trip farther north. For us, that is a good thing. Awaiting us was a good old-fashioned greeting and service. The menus were a bit frayed and sticky but featured a lot of great options... for any meal one chooses to have. I tend to like rather traditional foods and in this case I made a significant exception. The concoction I had was actually fantastic. I have no idea why I dared to do different and quite happy that I did. Fried Chicken Benedict $14.99 Piled high in this order! Mashed potato, country gravy, grilled buttermilk biscuit, fried chicken breast, two eggs any style (we like runny yolks!), hollandaise sauce, diced bacon and green onion. The iced tea was both great tasting and fun since it is served in a big Mason jar. My blushing bride had a vegetable omelette, her regular, and was quite satisfied. Food is great. Big menu, something for everybody. Here's why only 2 stars. They've starting to include the tip in your food total. You don't get to choose how much of a tip you want to leave them. if you pay by card right by where you sign it the receipt has a place that says "Tip". A year ago I could get an omelet that would be good for 2 meals. Now, I can eat it in 1 meal. Two adult breakfasts and 1 kid's meal was almost $55. Today, the food tasted good, but everyone's food was lukewarm. The service was mediocre at best. Someone was there, apparently getting ready to do work, and was literally measuring the back of the booth while we were eating. Pot roast, fried chicken, hamburgers, and so on. I decided on a Cobb salad. Just enough of all the goodies with a sliced chicken breast topping it off. The ranch dressing was light and flavorful. I could tell it was homemade. My favorite part of the experience was our server Ana. She was very kind and attentive without being pushy.
