We ordered steak and eggs, steak frites and chorizo/egg tacos. The steaks were outstanding, brandy peppercorn sauce and fries cooked in duck fat added an extra layer of yumminess to the steak frites. My birthday is the ONE day/time a year where I want to be a queen, celebrated, live it up and adored. I expect my birthday to include multiple festivities with a birthday dinner to top it off. Casalena in Woodland Hills has been at the top of the list for trendy, upscale restaurants recently and has even been a vendor at Yelp events (2025's CarnEvil). I finally got to experience Casalena in all it's glory for my 42nd birthday accompanied by fellow Yelper Michael B. Casalena holds real estate on the corner of Ventura and San Feliciano Drive in Woodland Hills in a building tucked behind large flora & fauna immediately giving a VIP aura and hidden mystique. This very special building was built in 1982 by the Makhani family and is currently owned by the Makhani children/siblings. Based on a fictional 'Lady Lena', a strong but nurturing idea of a goddess to the Makhani family; Casalena combines modern flare with elegance, boasting a Mediterranean menu and aiming to provide each and every guest with top-tier hospitality. We made reservations for my birthday on a Saturday at 6:40 and arrived to a PACKED restaurant - and I mean PACKED! - but I was blown away by the architectural design and ambiance of Casalena. Casalena is a dimly-lit, wooden accented, full glass walls, arched ceiling, paradise with a bar area, main dining hall complete with fireplace and a sunroom that somehow combines Hollywood with New York City vibes. I've never even been to New York City but it has that feel. I also hear there is an upstairs area but I did not venture to the second floor. We were seated on the east side windows of Casalena and I do have to complain that it was SO loud that you find yourself repeating conversation to your fellow diner(s) but it is the tradeoff to such a popular spot. Our waiter Cory took our birthday drink orders with my choice of a Golden Sour (bourbon, Pamplemousse liquour, port, lemon, egg froth - $20) and Michael going with The Juicy Scoop (passion fruit vodka, blood orange juice, lime, dehydrated blood orange - $19); while we also elected a starter of Hamachi Crudo (ponzu, serrano, crispy leek - $25). As you can see: prices at Casalena are slightly steep so bring your A-game wallet. Our drinks were beautifully crafted with my Golden Sour being a symphony of smoke essence, egg white, bourbon and sour; while Micheal's Juicy Scoop was the color of an island sunset and had the perfect pucker. The Hamachi Crudo started leads with Casalena tending to 'forget' the ponzu vinaigrette (they did to the table next to us, as well) so make sure to ask because the dish needs it. For my birthday meal, I selected the daily special of Pan-Seared Scallops (creamy polenta, micro mustard frill - $39) and Michael was in a pizza mood with the Spicy Soppressata (fresh mozzarella, scamorza, Soppressata, Calabrian honey - $26). I absolutely ADORE Casalena and its energy/design but I wouldn't say you get your money's worth in terms of food. My $39 dish was TINY in portion and although the polenta was tasty; it wasn't blowing me away and neither were the FOUR, baby-sized scallops. That's right: the entree only came with four scallops and not even jumbo-sized! The dish was also sort of bland in my opinion. I dislike upscale restaurants overcharging for mediocre, small-portion plates. Micheal's pizza was better, in my opinion, than my choice which I tasted despite being Celiac and not being able to have gluten. The pizza's crust was soft but crispy, lots of cheese and plenty of salami but again: not really anything I haven't had before. Not bad, but not out of this world and what I expect for the prices. I wanted a candle to blow out for my birthday (and I have plenty of wishes) so we ordered the Pink Lady Tarte Tatin - again, despite gluten - because Pink Lady apples are my favorite (butter caramel, pink lady apples, puff pastry, vanilla ice cream - $15). Although Casalena did provide a candle, they charged us for the dessert which most places give free for your birthday. Lame. The dessert was delicious though: the puff pastry was slightly flat but the combination of the pastry, thin, baked apple slices and vanilla was a lovely fall dessert treat. I know this might seem like I am picking on Casalena but their bathroom situation is WILD. The ladies' room is closet-sized and only has TWO stalls which is insane for the size of the restaurant and guest occupancy while the men were standing in a long line for the unisex bathroom. What?! Casalena has amazing energy and is a fantastic choice to impress a date or have a birthday celebration but just don't expect the food to send you out of this universe and bring your wallet. On a plus note: Michael received an email thanking us for us visit, which, although a form email, was a wonderful closing note. Not perfect; but I did love Casalena overall and would return.

Unfortunately, this visit left a bad taste in my mouth, and it had nothing to do with the food. We arrived approximately 15 minutes before happy hour ended, which was purely coincidental because I wasn't even aware of their happy hour schedule. Upon entering, I needed to use the restroom, so the person I was dining with was seated by the host. When I returned, I noticed we still hadn't received menus or been approached by a server, despite a waitress standing nearby looking directly at our table. Since no one had acknowledged us, my dining companion decided to walk over to the bar to take advantage of the happy hour specials. On his way back, he politely asked the waitress about getting menus. Her response was unnecessarily rude and unprofessional. She snapped, "This isn't self-seating! That's why you haven't gotten a menu!" She then proceeded to explain that it was her section. He calmly informed her that we had, in fact, been seated by the host. Rather than apologizing for her assumption, she went over to the host, said something while looking in our direction, and the host confirmed that he had indeed seated us. At that point, she disappeared into the kitchen, and another waitress approached our table. This second waitress was absolutely wonderful! She apologized for the confusion, took our drink order, and provided the level of hospitality you would expect when dining out. Unfortunately, the situation didn't end there. The original waitress continued making comments about us to coworkers as they passed by, making an already uncomfortable situation even more unpleasant. It was obvious that she had an issue with us, and rather than handling a simple misunderstanding professionally, she chose to make it everyone else's business. We eventually requested to speak with the general manager. He was understanding and offered us several $10 discount cards for future visits, along with a complimentary dessert, which I politely declined because I'm not much of a dessert person. I appreciated his attempt to make things right, but I want to make one thing very clear: We were not looking for discounts, free food, or special treatment. We simply expected basic respect and decent customer service. In fact, I ended up giving away the discount cards because, after that experience, I had no desire to return. The food was great, the drinks were good, and the waitress who stepped in to take care of us was fantastic. She deserves recognition for her professionalism and for turning an uncomfortable situation into a more pleasant dining experience. However, one employee's attitude can completely overshadow everything a restaurant does right. Customer service is about the CUSTOMER. You're not required to love every interaction, but you are expected to remain professional, respectful, and courteous. If dealing with customers bothers you that much, perhaps a warehouse position would be a better fit. It's unfortunate because La Popular has genuinely good food, but no amount of delicious queso fundido or complimentary desserts can make up for being treated like an inconvenience simply for walking through the door.

I've only been a small handful of times since 2021, but was nice to come back in again on a date night. This long-standing all inclusive lgbtq+ space is celebrating their 20th Anniversary this week as well as the birthday of one of it's awesome bartenders ChrisTopher, who served us up some great drinks tonight. This dive bar meets billiard bar meet karaoke lounge (two nights a week - Sunday and Thursday) meets double patio areas and more is a neighborhood favorite. When I lived down the street it was one of my favorite places to go whether walking along Reseda Blvd up to the street entrance or down Hart St to Canby Avenue through the patio and back door/main entrance via it's shared parking lot with neighboring businesses including a large music studio in an industrial-esque neighborhood block. There's plenty of parking between the lot and along Canby without restrictions, but also metered parking on Hart St and Reseda Blvd. It's a little more than a mile up from the Metro G - Orange Line and also rideshare friendly (back entrance drop off and pick up is often best as the front door is typically closed and/or locked at times. They have restrooms for all genders, remodeled and upgraded. Tall tables inside with seating as well as bar seating on all ends of their double sided bar. Drinks are a little more than your dive club prices, but loaded and generous portions. One downside is the AC system which is not powerful at all, and with the back doors generally open letting out in contained cool air it can be humid and muggy inside. It definitely cools off at night and in cooler months. They've made a lot of updates and small renovations, but the AC not so much. They have so cool themed nights like goth night via Club Caelum, drag events, drag race viewing Fridays, go-go dancing nights, competitions, Sunday BBQ and more. Come to the West Valley's only gay bar to make new friends and of course "C" frenz.

There were good times for sure but the bar, especially prior to covid was always dominated by cliques which did not make it an inclusive atmosphere for all...& many people stopped going. At one point it was very high school with a mean girl vibe. It's sad that with karaoke & the VR room (that was shut down) the vibe seemed way more inclusive in the last 3 years. I wish there could be another West Valley bar that is inclusive for EVERYBODY & not dominated by cliques that seem to think they can take over. Just my thoughts. M.
