I was thoroughly satisfied with Lowerline. This spot has a very intimate and local vibe. You can enjoy a very flavorful meal and still be able to have a convo with the Chef who hails from Louisiana! I had the half size portion of the Shrimp po Boy and a half size of the Crawfish Étouffée. My fiancé had the Seafood & Okra Gumbo. Being able to have half & half options was absolutely clutch. The crawfish étouffée was a perfect consistency and was VERY flavorful. The shrimp po boy was very good and filling, especially if you mix and match it with the étouffée or gumbo. The gumbo was flavorful too, you could taste the hints of okra. For folks who hate okra don't worry I didn't see the actual vegetable floating around. Once you reach the bottom you are met with a soft shell crab. The cherry on top for this meal was the complimentary dessert, a Coffee & Chicory Panna Cotta. This was my first time having the Panna Cotta. It is a thick custard that had a slight coffee flavor, it was a delicious way to finish this meal. I will definitely be back! read more

We were very excited to try this place as they have great reviews but unfortunately we had a less than pleasant experience. We were seated around 6:30, and ordered around 6:40. Our oysters came out promptly, but we never received our drinks. About 20 minutes later, we inquired about the drinks and the waiter responded as if they were on their way to the table. In the meantime, 5 people squished next to us and also ordered their drinks. Another 25 minutes passed by and the people who ordered after us were receiving their items. I understand that restaurants can get busy, and are occasionally short staffed but waiting almost an hour is insane. We didn't even receive our drinks in that time frame let alone our meals. Visited my daughter last week...Lowerline was one of the places she made a point to bring me to. We have the crawfish etouffee, bbq shrimp & gumbo. Etouffee is a favorite of mine. We were in New Orleans last spring for the annual jazz fest and I got my fill in that town but holy smokes! Lowerline killed it on their version! The seasoning was perfect! I've lived in NYC for 10+ years, and I've learned to avoid restaurants that promise creole cuisine. New Orleans is my childhood home, and everything I tried in NYC has paled in comparison... until now. Something told me to take a chance on this little spot, and I'm so glad I did. The gumbo was deliciously seasoned with a mild heat. The catfish poboy was savory and perfectly dressed. And the addition of a focaccia bun to a muffaletta was a fun twist. The space is small but cozy with Crescent City-inspired decor that isn't trying too hard. Our waitress was nice, too. I will be coming back soon! read more

So I love New Orleans food. But I wasn't sure how I'd feel about it in NYC. The restaurant is TINY. But you can eat outside if you prefer. They serve wine only not cocktails. The crawfish etoufee seemed like it wasn't piping hot but it was still VERY tasty. Like comfort food at its finest. I wish I tried the Muffeletta. The orange wine was delish, as was the Rose. The eats coast oysters are also much much better. I wish there were more vegetable options or sides. Like fried green tomatoes or fried pickles would go great with this menu. Damn is all I can say, I had southern Louisiana roommate in college and have visited NOLA a few times so I have had the pleasure of eating authentic Cajun food. During a lockdown trip to NYC (lockdown meaning) I ordered in and didn't go out this location was suggested to me by someone who lived in NOLA for 2 years. I was pleasantly surprised at everything we got and how well it traveled. I love all seafood so I picked out the seafood étouffée and gobbled it all down in one sitting, the spices were amazing, the rice cooked to perfection and there was tasty bits of shrimp and crab in it as well. The red beans and rice were so dang good, and I had some bites of the shrimp po boy. All around delicious food and I can't wait to visit the brick and mortar one day soon! read more

Have been here a couple of times over the past few years and always loved the hospitality, good food and vibes here. Just got back from a poboy binge in Nola last week and I had a lingering craving. Wow, this place brought me back with its fresh, crispy baguette. Oddly, my favorite part is the finely shredded lettuce and generous smear of mayo. I was pleasantly surprised with my roast beef po boy! It was juicy, flavorful, and unexpectedly larger than I thought it would be! That's no problem though because it filled me up for dinner. Was walking through the neighborhood with a friend en route to another friends house when we stumbled upon lower line. Now I don't claim to be an expert in New Orleans( pronounced noowallens) cuisine but I've been there 3 times in a year and a half so I'm a little knowledgeable. Immediately upon walking in I noticed they had crystal hot sauce on every table and Abita beer and root beer so they definitely were off too a good start. The menu was very limited so when I see that I assume they have really mastered the items they do have. I wasn't super hungry so I went with a cup of crawfish etoufee and a 1/2 dozen raw oysters. The cup portion wasn't huge but it was a good enough size to kill the hunger bug I was having. There was plenty of crawfish meat and it seemed like every bite had some. The rue was good and rich, I don't know if they let it sit a few days before serving but it definitely didn't taste like beginners rue. It is a small, cozy spot which explains the limited options but it's NYC so I get it. I didn't get our hostess names but she did mention she was from Boston and she was lovely, very pleasant and always checking on us. Great neighborhood eatery offering a break from traditional NY food, I'm all for it read more

Lowerline, located 2-3 blocks from the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens, is an excellent spot for Cajun/Southern Cuisine. The menu features Louisiana dishes including classics like the Po Boy Shrimp. We did get the Po Boy Shrimp, with roast beef: a surf n' Turf Po Boy. It was very, very tasty. The shrimp pieces were plentiful and the star of the dish. The pieces are deep fried after being breaded with corn starch, and both interior and exterior parts of the shrimp are great. The roast beef ended up being put to the side a little, overshadowed by its marine counterpart. We ordered two smaller dishes, as well. A cup of seafood gumbo, which comes with a small amount of rice. It's a great dish to try if you are wanting to try out Southern dishes, and I'd recommend pairing it up with a cup of another dish. We had the ham bone and red bean dish, which was solid, but not my favorite. The place is small, but it feels nice inside, with a welcoming staff. Really, our waiter/host was very friendly and the service was great. Finally, we were given a complimentary dessert. A coffee Panacotta courtesy of a nearby cafe (I wish I noted down the name!). It was just exceptional, and the perfect end to a very satisfying meal. read more

Their rosé and champagne selection is also quite good, and if you're into oysters, they offer a great variety. We stopped into Lowerline for the first time for a bite since we were in the area and just finished checking out the Brooklyn Museum. We were very satisfied with our entire meal and would definitely come back. My boyfriend and I ordered a few things to share: crawfish etouffee, seafood + okra gumbo + fried shrimp po boys. My favorite was the crawfish etouffee - the gravy was so rich + hearty. I truly loved every bite of it. My boyfriend really enjoyed the seafood + okra gumbo and said it was reminiscent of his grandmother's cooking. We ordered the fried shrimp po boys as well and while I still enjoyed them overall, I thought the bread ratio was a bit overpowering. The area itself seems pretty busy + lively! This is my second review of lowerline and it has absolutely solidified its status in my mind as the best place to eat at in Prospect Heights. The gumbo and étouffée are just so good. The oysters are also well priced for the quality and freshness, considering NYC prices. Our family comes from the islands so we appreciate the time and effort John made to ensure that the oysters were shucked properly. This takes a lot of skill and muscle power. I brought my mother here and she isn't easily impressed with food foreign to her but the NoLa food the kitchen cooked up was savoury and fresh. She loved it! I highly suggest people come in early to score seats before the dinner crowd rolls in. Even if you do end up queuing, it is always worth the wait. They serve free petite coffee panna cotta after dinner, a delectable treat I would have willingly paid for a bigger portion. Lastly, shout out to the friendly staff. It's really hard to find a good New Orleans, Cajan restaurant in NYC and this one is pretty darn good. FYI this place is really small, so if you hit it right you can get a table right away but if not, you might have to wait. I tried the fried oyster, surf and turf Po-Boys and the Seafood & Okra Gumbo and the Crawfish Étouffée, and I liked them all. I especially liked that you can get a half sandwich and cup of soup! We also got a muffaletta to go, to eat later, it's not quite the same as in New Orleans, but still pretty good. My favorite thing I've had here is the BBQ shrimp, very messy, but so worth it! I've had Lowerline bookmarked forever, but do not find myself in Prospect Heights very often. We stopped in for lunch this afternoon while exploring and had a great meal sitting at the bar. We tried both the oyster and shrimp po boys and they were delicious, along with a side of fries. The complementary coffee pana cotta was also super tasty! My only recommendation would be to get the full portion of the po boy regardless of how hungry you are. I guarantee you will finish it! read more

But boy does it have charm. As soon as you walk in it smells delicious. Never walked into a restaraunt that smells as good. Me and my boyfriend both got the half po boy half gumbo meal. Decent sized portion and filling. Flavors are amazing. The gumbo warmed my soul and the Sandwhich added some nice crispy fried flavor. Everything was delicious. I grew up in Houston, but my mom was born and raised in New Orleans. Her whole side of the family is from in and around NOLA. So, I was skeptical about trying this place. But, I'm happy to report it's one of my favorite NYC finds! The food is delicious and mostly authentic. My mom would have some notes on the Muffuletta, but everything else I have tried is spot on! Wow! Surprisingly hard to find fresh New Orleans French bread in NYC, and this place has found it and built the perfect po-boy. I've tried the catfish, shrimp, and oyster po-boy. All are delicious! My absolute favorite item is the muffuletta! The most refreshing sandwich you could ask for. Pretty good po boys quality wise. I just recommend that they should get some horse radish for the po boys like how it's done in NOLA. I don't expect piping hot oysters due to delivery, but expect them not to be cold. - Echoing someone else on here, $20 for 8 ounces of etouffee and 8 ounces of white rice is highway robbery.
