I took advantage of a Living Social deal since my company did not offer Vision at the time. I saw the great reviews and that sold me. I will admit... it is quite a drive out there, but it is located in a beautiful area of West Austin. After the trek out there, I was greeted right away and felt comfortable as soon as I stepped through the door. I quickly saw Dr. Packer and he was great, probably the nicest Dr. that I've worked with. He was helpful in explaining what and why he was doing things. He gave me all options and his recommendations. It was quick and painless. After the exam I started to shop for some of the glasses there. I will admit, the prices are up there and of course the glasses that fit perfectly were some of the most expensive ones on the floor. I know it is a commitment to quality for something I will use everyday though. I'm still on the fence about getting the glasses but I really enjoyed the experience I had there. Justin, the person helping me with the glasses was also very friendly and we chatted up about a mutual love for comic books. I definitely would recommend this team and I plan to be a return customer. Update from my 2014 Review - It's now May, 2016 and I still see Dr. Packer, still LOVE his office, and still refer friends and family to him. I originally found Dr. Packer through a social network coupon about 2 1/2 years ago. I am so glad I did! I have now had three visits in his office and the last one I was able to see any changes in my eyes from the previous year with the new updated technology they use. The apt. is completely painless and completely relaxing. I love his office, all of the people there are very friendly, happy and nice. He takes great care of your eyes. I bought the Living Social deal for Lone Star Eye after doing a quick Yelp to check out the legitness of the business. After seeing the solid 5 stars (which rarely happens) it was an easy decision. I have to say after visiting the office yesterday, I can say the 5 stars is well deserved. The staff at the front desk was very very friendly and helpful, not to mention good looking. I was a few minutes late to my appointment but they didn't have a problem getting me in and serving me quickly. The Optomap scanner they use to scan your eyes without having to have them dialating is so cool and quick. The girl leading me through the process helped to ease any fears I had as the crazy contraption I was about to look into started rearing up like an airplane. But , that was it, a few crazy scans with a green laser and I was done. I met Dr. Packer soon after. Dr. Packer is a very young and well kept guy. He is extremely friendly and more importantly, you can tell he is very knowledgeable about his profession and has a great way of explaining the technical aspects of anything I asked. After meeting with Dr. Packer, I went on to get fitted for my first pair of glasses. The "Optical Wizard" as her business card says really lived up to her name. Knowing it was my first pair of glasses and seeing my style she quickly passed me on a few pairs of glasses and by the 3rd one I knew which ones I wanted. Not to mention how awesome she makes you feel by telling you how good the glasses look in a very enthusiastic and yet genuine way. Overall Lone Star Eye is the best medical office I have ever been in and would say that despite the drive out to Westlake (from North Austin) I will keep returning each and every time. read more

Lone Star Eye is where it's at. I decided to come here because of all the good reviews I read on Yelp (despite it being 33 mins away from my home). The drive on 360 is always an enjoyable one. I walk in and was greeted. The waiting area is pretty small, they have a love seat and a chair.... that's it. BUT.... they have a keurig and free water that was available to patients. THEY ALSO HAVE A NINTENDO 64 in the waiting room (which is great for kids, or adults, no judgement).... I opted in to do the $40 alternative instead of eye dilation. This option is great, they basically take a picture of your eye ball and let you know what is back there. Apparently, you have no pain sensors in the back of the eye ball so unless you get a picture of it, you'll never know what is going on back there!!! It's also a lot easier than getting air blown into your eye haha. The guy that checked me in was super nice and patient. Dr. Packer was honest and straight forward with me which I appreciated because I hate when Doctor's beat around the bush. He put me into some new contacts and so far (2 hours into them) I think I like them? haha. I was so scared to find an eye doctor because I just dread the yearly visits... BUT, Lone Star Eye was amazing and I'm glad I chose them! read more

So am I leaving a third 5 star review for the same business? You're damn right. Dr. Packer and friends knocked if out of the park again. Not only do they still have the 64 with a quality lineup including Mariokart which was running when I came in, but they still are the friendliest people. Lindsey was quick to ask about my medical insurance and if she wanted me to have her call to see if they covered the Optimap which takes place of eye dilation. They then took me back to run the vision tests. Dr. Packer, friendly as ever, came in and we shot the shit longer than it actually took for him to get me set up with new/improved lenses. Doctor even prescribed me a cheaper eyed drop for my puffy lids. Doctor packer noticed the Tom's frames I picked up last year and he and Lindsey checked to see if they were still under warranty because I let them get scratched. At the end, I was greeted by the very nice frames expert (can't remember her name) and they even let me try on the new Tom's frames they hadn't put out on display yet. I'll be going back to pick out some sweet frames when I have more time. Also they are affordable as far as nice frames go. Do yourself a favor and see them and quit the rest because they can't mess with the best. P.S. After finding out the pharmacy I picked didn't carry the drops, rdoctor Packer called me personally to tell me they wouldn't even order them and that his team would find another pharmacy close by and let me know. Less than an hr later I heard from Lindsey who let me know that it was getting filled and she confirmed they had one available. Love the dedicated and efficient team. read more

I walked in late to my appointment frazzled from having a weirdly chaotic day and the staff was immediately friendly and helpful, and check-in was super quick. I don't have kids but there's a game console to occupy them, and coffee/tea/water in the reception area. This was my first eye appointment ever, so I had some questions during the weird (but not uncomfortable) tests, and they were all answered. Dr. Packer gave me the rundown on my results -- he's very personable and seems very knowledgeable. Afterward I was assisted with choosing frames. I ultimately went elsewhere, because the prices were steeper than identical frames I found online, but they were helpful and had a good selection. read more

Dr. Packer and his assistant did a very nice job. They have a Keurig (whaaaat) instead of regular old coffee, and bottled water on a self serve bar. I was the first appointment in the door on a Tuesday morning, so I didn't have to wait at all. They have high tech everything and it was very interesting to see a panoramic view of my eye on the Optomap retinal exam. It was pricey, even with my Yelp Deal, but I did get a new patient exam, contact fitting and a new set of lenses, so I guess not really more than can be expected. I've been to many!! eye dr's. This is totally the best I've had in years, maybe ever. No waiting, very modern equipment--no dilation--how cool. Visit went like clockwork, everyone friendly and competent. He took more time to explain an eye condition more thoroughly than any MD, O.D., , even opthalmologist, I've ever had. I tried on, and kept the first pair of contacts--usually go through several at least. He wrote RX for restasis that I had asked 3 other O.D.'s and Retina specialists for and they refused bc it "cost too much" and "would take too long to work."--Huh? In fact, he suggsted it. I had purchased LIving Social deal. Turns out, everything was covered except my contact fitting and the contacts under my insurance--which is normal, and deal would not cover anything. I was able to get refund w/Living Social w/no prob. Only thing I could ask for to be better-he had a nice smelling room deodorizing thingy. I'm chemically sensitive and was having some bad reactions. However, office people actually do not wear perfume. Can't speak to $, but it's your eyes..I'm actually confident I would not get a better fitting anywhere. He told me bc of some recent surgery that I would have to go back and expect changes but if w/in 3 months, there would be no charge. Not to anyone, as far as I know--contact lens fitting, glasses, and contact lenses are never covered under any insurance I've had. That's SOP. It didn't come up until the end of the appt, but perhaps that info should be included for new patients before exam? A well-earned 5 star. read more

My husband and I came here for him to get a Lasik evaluation. This was for a second opinion, as the first one I just didn't feel right about. (They had told my husband that the ONLY option for him was lens replacement, and that his cone was too deep for lasik and he had pretty severe cataracts.) We did not tell Dr. Packer about the previous diagnosis, just asked for Lasik consult. He looked at my husband's eyes and told him he has stage 1 cataracts, which is not a big deal at this time, and that he is candidate for lasik or for multifocal contacts, and that if he did Lasik he would still need reading glasses. Explained that for our active lifestyle a lens replacement is not the best option, and explained why. He was interested in actually HELPING, not just telling us that we needed the most expensive option and putting us in a hard sell position. I appreciate that SO MUCH. I felt he was very honest and explained the pros and cons of every option. I would highly recommend this office! read more

My husband first discovered Dr. Packer thru Yelp and we decided to give him a try based off all the glowing reviews. We suspected our young daughter needed glasses and we were correct. I was able to get my new glasses in two days and the doctor is letting me use trial contacts to see how if I like it before I have to pay for a full set. He is very knowledgeable and provides great customer service! The lady that helps pick out the glasses is great too. I first visited Dr. Packer for a LASIK consultation over a year ago. The entire staff was super friendly from start to finish, and their office is comfortable and always stocked with complimentary Keurig coffee and bottled waters. Dr. Packer has wonderful bedside manner; he was super gentle and patient in answering my endless questions and making sure that I understood everything about my LASIK options. He set me up with my excellent LASIK surgeon, and even came to my surgery appointment to check on me and calm my nerves. My post-op appointments were easy and consistent with the excellent care I received from Day One. Now that I have perfect vision, it almost makes me sad I don't have a reason to be Dr. Packer's patient anymore... almost! :) read more

Dr. Packer has a calming personality, a great handshake, answered all my questions, and provided excellent care. I have been wearing pharmacy/Walmart type cheaters and finally decided I needed prescription glasses when I could no longer read at 400+ magnification and I had difficult recognizing people in the distance. Based on his Yelp scores, I decided to give him a shot. I am generally don't give much credence to reviews but I figured I could always walk out, if it wasn't a good fit. I used to work in the medical field and I know how good professionals (front desk staff, medical staff, and doctors) are supposed to practice their craft. Be clear that the front desk staff and medical techs are professionals, as they practice their own craft. The Lone Star Eye staff are true professionals. I will continue going to Dr. Packer for my eye care and I would not hesitate to recommend him to my family and friends. read more
