Horrible customer service! I will NEVER step foot in this place again. EVER! That is how bad my experience was! I was met by a Hispanic man whose attitude was extremely off-putting, enough to send me walking, which has never happened to me before. I was in professional sales for 30+ years, and I can't believe what retail sales have stooped to. I would fire him in a nanosecond. I went in there believing this was a good, family-owned establishment, with great reviews, only to be met with someone who really shouldn't be there - he had no interest in helping, did not smile one single time. He was cold, aloof, and rude. When I told him I was leaving and WHY I was leaving, he didn't blink an eye - he was completely fine with that. Unreal. Sickening actually. I love Gene Rogers Optical! A hidden gem in Austin. Not only is the selection unique and exquisite but they have excellent customer service as a family owned and operated business. Kyle went above and beyond when I tried to reorder a frame that broke. They no longer carried that model but he was able to track the last one from the manufacturer's warehouse! I actually stumbled across here some years back (2016?), when I was visiting from NYC. I was desperate for someone to adjust the frames I had been given with my Medicaid in nyc (basically, it was not the right type for my face and my severe myopia), and walked in with no appointment. He immediately adjusted my frames free of charge, made sure I was comfortable in them as much as I could be, and said to come back when I needed another adjustment. He also confirmed the type of frames I actually needed for my face type and heavy lenses, and I could tell he was appalled that anyone in their right mind would even give me the type I had (I basically have no nose bridge as well, and a wider face; the place in nyc basically got my plastic frames and widen them by force). I just wanted to say thank you for helping me, and giving me some suggestions on how to make it fit on my nose better, and the ear rash/irritation disappear. I had been carrying my broken pair of glasses around for several months (wearing my 5 year old, out-of-date, wonky backups), hoping to find a place that would indeed repair them and not try to sell me an exam and a new pair of glasses. Finally, here it Austin, I decided to do some research and came across several places that seemingly offered repairs only. I didn't know what the cost was going to be, but for a $450 pair of glasses, I knew I'd rather repair them, than re-purchase them. The spot that they were broken at seemed to me, unrepairable. But, nothing ventured nothing gained. We walked in and were promptly greeted, the glasses looked over, and told that they might not be able to fix them, but that they would try. When we came back to pick them up, they had been repaired. And when we asked how much? We were told no charge, but to consider them when we needed new specs. This place is P for perfect. I made an appointment to get my first pair of glasses ever. The eye-exam was one of the most precise exams I have ever experienced. The owner took all the time in the world to make sure that the correction I needed was just right. After the exam I spent about one more hour in the shop selecting frames (for both vision and readers). The selection of frames is large and the prices are reasonable. Gene Rogers is what I like to call a "crypto-stealth-hipster." Okay, I don't call Gene or anyone else that, but he - and his shop - are an absolute treasure trove of unexpected hip irony. You want frames that'll make you look like Elton John circa 1973? He's got 'em. You want frames that will make you look like your grandmother in the late 50's? Want some like she wore in the early 80's? Check and check. Which is odd, because Gene comes off as the most down-the-middle Texas good ol' boy imaginable. You just wouldn't think he'd be the kind of guy to have impeccable taste in eyewear that runs seamlessly from the retro and ironic to the current and tasteful. But apparently he is. I found a perfect pair of frames for a hundred bucks. A HUNDRED BUCKS, PEOPLE!!! The ones the stepdaughter picked out weren't a whole lot more, either. With lenses my new pair cost me about a half to a third of what I paid for the last ones at another trendy optical store. I read the reviews here on about this wonderful optical store! Tempting me out from my office last week I went to Gene Roger's Optical for what was without a doubt my best experience at an optical shop ever. Not only did they have a great selection of classic designed glasses (without a lot of modern fluff frames that i'd never consider), Gene's wife was also very knowledgeable/helpful in finding a frame that fit my face. I felt very informed by all the options I could have (customizations to some frames were available) and a definite feeling of concern for trying to satisfy my desires in a pair of glasses. The personal service here was so top notch I doubt you'll be able to find that type of experience at any Genericus Optical store. My total bill ended up ~300 which I feel is extremely fair for the quality of glasses I ended up purchasing with lenses (I notice also there is a yelp special going on this month of April 2010). On top of the price, their lenses have a very good no-questions-asked 2 year warranty which is really nice added bonus. Scratching/poor UV coating was a huge problem of mine with my previous set of glasses and I was happy to hear I could receive some assurance for poor-quality/accidents. I honestly felt like there were a great variety of glasses while I looked through everything they had. Styles for every face, for every occasion formal, casual, outdoors. I was extremely tempted to buy a second pair of glasses for more lighthearted occasions! I can't wait to go pick up my pair this next week. I've bought 3 pairs of expensive frames here over the years, including a pair I just spent $655 on (including the prescription lenses). When I went in to pick up my most recent pair, I asked if he could adjust a previous pair I bought from them. This was the new guy (not the father or son). He looked at my face and insisted they were not crooked. He then placed them on the table and we could both see they were obviously crooked. He then said, "Well, our heads aren't perfect. I don't adjust to tables, I adjust to heads". The glasses do not sit straight on my face. They need to be adjusted. I've spent so much money here, so it was disappointing for this guy to resist the simplest request. An adjustment is so basic. It was also disappointing that the son was standing near by putting frames back on display and said nothing. I was on the fence about whether this place was worth it. I won't buy anymore frames from them. I'll go to Optique next time. read more
