I lost my R eye contact lens right before a flight. I was in a time crunch to make sure I can get to the airport. Patrick at modern eyes answered the phone when I asked to see if I was able to get one contact lens to hold me over. He responded with kindness, professionalism, and understanding. So many other places refused to help me and gave a list of reasons why they couldn't help, but this is a sign of humanity and truly understanding when someone can't see and how this affects their life. There was some information I needed to update before my appointment, and the staff reached out to be via text to get the new information! I've been long overdue for some eyecare and found Modern Eyes after a quick browse through the area's highest rated eye docs. Right off the bat, I was blown away by how responsive and helpful the staff were. Good communication skills go a long way-- especially when it comes to answering questions about health care. The eye exam itself was very thorough and Dr. Franklin was a delight to work with. I also super appreciate the whole team staying on top of their cleaning & COVID precautions game. I originally intended to look elsewhere for glasses, thinking I'd find better deals and lewks, but ended up purchasing pair at Modern Eyes. I don't write a lot of reviews, but the service I got today deserves one for sure. I developed a very red eye and realized that it was time to have a professional look at it. I started looking for optometrists around me and Modern Eyes was the only one that had an appointment option specifically for "red eye" so I was thrilled to see that instead of the standard "lens fitting" or "eye exam" options. When I got there, the team was cheerful and helpful. I was seen quickly and evaluated thoroughly. In rapid fire then, here's the other positives: + The doctor was thorough and helpful, taking time to answer my questions and explain to me their diagnosis + They gave me a small package of lens cleaner I could try out, and some other over the counter options to consider. + The entire visit only cost $50 (no insurance) and they were up front and transparent about that pricing even before I arrived. + Despite scheduling the appt same day, they texted me so I could fill out all the forms in advance. + They called around to multiple pharmacies to make sure they found one that had the RX's I needed. + Once they got it filled they called me (~2 hours after the appt) to let me know if was in, explain the prescription dosing again, and which pharmacy to head to. So if you're looking for quality care at a fair price, these folks are great and I will be back next time I need eye care. read more

i had never had prior issues with my eyes before, but at one point, one of my eyes was extremely red, burned when i tried opening it for too long & was starting to have hazy vision. i was able to promptly schedule an appointment, working around my class schedule. i did a few preliminary tests and saw dr. franklin shortly afterwards. what i had suspected was the problem turned out to be completely wrong, but she immediately put in numbing and dye, fixing the problem within minutes. she also gave me a "bandage" contact and some eyedrops. i was then rescheduled a few days later for her to check on the healing and take out the contact, at no additional cost. everyone at the office is extremely kind, patient & knowledgeable. the office is also extremely well up-kept and organized. definitely recommend! read more

Great service from start to finish. Dr. Franklin's team went the extra mile to get to the bottom of some insurance coverage issues that arose. Although they didn't *have* to address it, as it was an error caused by my insurance carrier, they worked out the matter without any delays to my appointment, and kept me apprised during the entire process to boot. Dr. Franklin is a true gem, professionally and personally - she gave a thorough exam and answers to all my questions, and most importantly, Dr. Franklin has an excellent bedside manner: she is very easy to speak with; I never felt rushed or 'judged' (it's been several years since I had an eye exam, and my vision had changed a bit during that time); and between the level of care I received, and the up-to-date diagnostic technology in use at this practice (I attached a diagnostic picture taken during my eye exam, which I opted for to avoid having my pupils dilated), I always felt I was in very capable hands - all of which are important, because vision and eye health overall are a big deal... :) I expect to be with this practice for as long as I live in the greater Austin area. Really great service!! Great selection and they took my insurance!! Also the staff was very kind, which can sometimes be hard to find. Anyways, I went in for a baseline vision test for medical purposes and the exam process was very thorough. I also was able to get some light prescription glasses...they recommended a style that I seen before and liked but didn't know if it would look right on me...well I ended up loving them and taking them!! They were also able to help me with some old prescription glasses (that I did not take care of tbh) by adjusting, adding padding, and screws...smh‍!!! Everything about this business is fantastic, from the Staff to Dr. Franklin and everything in between. On a fully booked day (& on a Friday nonetheless), Kylee went out of her way to reach out and accommodate my request to fill a spot in the event of a no-show/cancellation. Which was very thoughtful considering it would've been more convenient to keep my original appointment for the following week & I wouldn't have known the difference. Then, during my exam and throughout the entire process of getting contacts for the first time and selecting frames, I never once felt rushed or was given the impression that I was impeding clinic flow. In fact, the service I was provided was well above that which one would expect from an optometrist office. All of my questions, from specifics regarding my exam to most effective utilization of my insurance to which frames looked best on me, were answered thoroughly and with a smile. Dr. Franklin (who is extremely knowledgeable) and Kylee (who is as well) are kind, and make the overall experience a very pleasant one. I'll trust them to take care of my eyes for as long as I live in Austin and, if you're reading this and like to see clearly, I suggest you do the same. Also, shout out to the guy who cuts the lenses. I was a patient of Dr. Franklin's back in July 2017 and it was my first eye exam. She saw signs of a corneal disease called "keratoconus" which causes my cornea to bulge forward like a cone and to steepen, severely distorting my vision. Supposedly she discussed it with me, I don't recall. And if she did, she poorly communicated the severity of my condition. She never believed it was necessary for me to go go see a cornea specialist and instead chose to wait a year until my next eye exam. What? My corneas were literally degenerating! This is also a very questionable decision because she must know how transient college students are. When I put on the prescription that my Dr. Franklin diagnosed me with, it did nothing. I insisted this to the front office and they never inquired further. Don't you think that if you get a pair of glasses they should help your vision? I continued to just rely on my stronger eye. Fast forward to 2019 and I am formally diagnosed with keratoconus by a cornea specialist who notices that I have STRETCH MARKS on one eye because of how severe my cornea has bulged forward. I am completely blind in that eye; and if I had waited too long, I would have needed a cornea transplant. For over three years I saw out of just one eye. I called Dr. Franklin's office and addressed this situation with her. Rather than talking RESPONSIBILITY of her mistakes and or even admitting that she could have - and should have - referred me to a cornea specialist to at least INQUIRE about my degenerative cornea, she became indignant and defensive. Not once in our conversation did she admit that she could taken more proactive action or at least told me get my condition checked out by a second opinion; instead she gave an excuse after excuse saying that "a solution to my condition didn't exist back in 2017." They did exist. Since 2008. Regardless, she diagnosed me with a degenerative corneal disease and asserted that she made no mistakes, including how poorly she communicated the severity of this disease. Like I said, I have no recollection that she discussed it with me. If I had, I would have pressed her further. My fault was not pressing her further. That was my mistake. I want to be clear: My issue with Dr. Franklin is that she insisted she made no mistakes. My issue is not concerning her medical diagnosis. Dr. Franklin, with all due respect, even doctors make mistakes. All people do. It is how we respond and take OWNERSHIP of our mistakes that truly shows the nature of our character. read more

Don't go here. I. Ordered prescription sunglasses and paid a 50% deposit. Then they couldn't fulfill my order, and I'm having a hard time getting my money back. For some reason they insist I must come in to get my deposit back - not possible over the phone. I've explained that I have an young baby v and it is difficult to come in during their limited opening hours to get my refund.i see this as a tactic to inconvenience me in the hope I just abandon my deposit, or hope I chose other glasses. I've worked in retail and I know it is possible to refund a credit card workout a customer being physically present. You could also mail me a check. Now they are not replying to my emails. I tried Modern Eyes for my annual eye exam, and I was happy with the visit and service provided. The front desk staff was nice, and they got me started with the pre-exam stuff while waiting for the doctor. I was in and out pretty quickly, and ordered my contacts from them a few weeks later. One weird thing - they scheduled an appointment on my husband's behalf with a retina specialist, but didn't let him know the time and date of the appointment. He would have completely missed it, except that the retina specialist called the day before to confirm. Luckily he was able to make it! Sad to say, but I have to revise my initial review (based on my first visit & exam) as a result of the followup visits. I won't be back. The next two paragraphs are from my first review: Went today for a routine check-up and to order new glasses (I can't wear contacts) if need be. Modern Eyes is very easy to get to with free validated garage parking. Please note they are in the 2200 block of Rio Grande - you must approach from the south as Rio Grande is one way for cars (only) between 15th & 24th. I arrived on time and after just a minute for doing my paperwork I was in the exam room being prepped by a technician. In less than 10 minutes I saw Dr Franklin, as professional and pleasant an optometrist as I have ever seen (I've seen a lot). Now, here's the follow-up and the reason for my new (lowered) rating. The day after my initial visit I was called and told that since the technician filling the prescription at the counter did not realize it was for reading glasses the lens material he was going to have the lab used could not be used. End result, I had to agree to a change in material and pay another $40. Bullshit. By that Friday, when I was told the glasses might come in (this would prove to be Modern Eyes favorite phrase) I called and checked Friday and was told they were not in. Now, the same tech explained to me, 'sometimes they ship them and email us later so they might already be here and we just don't know it." Okay; I feel good about my glasses now. They did not arrive Sat or Mon. On Tues morning Modern Eyes called me and said they had come in yesterday but they did not see them until today. Okay. What does that mean? You can't see things in an optometrist shop? I go pick them up. After a fitting and some temple adjustments I take my reading glasses home and sit down to my computer to work. Guess what? I can't see the screen. Everything is blurred and fuzzy. Everything. I see better without the glasses. Several days later I trek back to Modern Eyes; see paragraph 2 - they are not easy to get to. (PS: Try getting to them as students come back to UT; this charming West Campus location is now a minefield of jaywalking newcomers to Austin. Not fun.) The same technician I've dealt with from the beginning listens to my story - basically I can't read with these reading glasses - without comment. I tell him the only way they work is if I hold something in front of my face - like trying to read a menu in a dark restaurant. Well, did you tell us how far away you hold things when you read? he asks. What? Are you freaking kidding me? Notice, he didn't say I'm sorry, or that's too bad or let's make that right. He said, "did you tell us how far away you hold things when you read?' No - I didn't. Since you didn't ask me about that , I didn't tell you. And since you were the one who screwed up the order in the first place and had to call me a day later to explain why you had to change the material - i.e., you "didn't realize they were reading glasses" I am wondering why you didn't ask me about the distance thing when you called if it mattered. Since the other three pair of reading glasses I've bought over the years from other optometrists' all worked as they were supposed to as soon as I picked them up without anyone ever questioning the "distance" I hold things from my eyes I think this is a bogus excuse. Reading glasses assume a standard reading distance range. The tech had no answer for that. There was a lot of dialog about adjusting for power and this and that and I said I don't really care: I want these glasses to work or my money back. Either one. After some adjustments by the doctor to a pair of goggles adjusting for power the tech said they would send the glasses back and I would have them by Friday. Friday comes and goes; no glasses. No glasses Sat. Or Mon, or Tues. Wednesday I called and the same tech said oh yes we have them; they came in yesterday and I was too busy to call you. That's great customer service by the way. I've now been to your shop three times (soon to be four) and I still don't have glasses (although you have my money) and you were too busy to call? I got the glasses on Wed and they seem to be okay. Am I satisfied? No. Did I feel like Modern Eyes really cared and tried to make things better? No. Will I go back? No. read more

Almost TWO YEARS LATER I found my glasses and came into modern eyes hoping they still had my lenses somewhere and the two girls at the front desk looked everywhere (even brought out a ladder) and eventually found them!! Today was my first experience with Modern Eyes and let me tell you it won't be my last! After walking past this place millions of time on my way to class, I finally stopped in today to see if they repair sunglasses. After too much merrymaking at the Houston rodeo, I had mashed one of the hinges of my Tory Burch sunglasses (while in my purse)- bending them pretty decently. The Modern Eyes staffer was not only able to quickly fix the bent hinge but they did it FO FREE! Who knew West Campus would have a business with excellent customer service? The staff were all very friendly and welcoming, all instructions and communications between them and Dr. Franklin were very clear and I enjoyed my visit overall. I gave this business two stars just because it is true that Dr. Franklin does appear to be a professional doctor with great bed-side manners. I took off 3 stars because of their business practices. This office seems to be great for one-off eye exams, but for long term care - I don't think so. Texas Optometry Board doesn't mandate how often an eye exam must be performed, leaving it up to each doctor to set an expiration date (which they do not have to set at all.) Modern Eye chooses to set the expiration date at one year, thereby requiring you to go through the exam an annual basis if you want to reorder contact lenses. And because we're talking about the contact lenses, it's the more expensive eye exam. For no reason except to apparently bill the insurance companies. To me, if I have something wrong with my prescription, and I can't see as well as I want to, I'd go in and ask for my eyes to be re-examined. To force me to have to go through the exam whether it's needed or not, all the while refusing to order contact lenses is just not a business practice I care to support. So if you don't mind paying an annual premium for your contact lenses, this is the place for you. Me? I'll "look" elsewhere. read more

Awesome place for contact and routine eye exam! Dr. Sonja F. was an excellent doctor and she really takes care of you. The rest of the staff that helped with the preliminary exams and at the counter were also for nice and helpful. Dr. Franklin answers any questions or concerns you may have in a patient way. They have free parking, but you must approach the store from the South as Rio Grande is a one-way street. I was VERY happy to find an optometrist near my apartment that accepted my Tricare insurance, woohoo! Beware of contact exams because they are almost always never covered by insurance, but my eyeglass exam was. They give you a free pair of trial contacts and I received a travel size bottle of (expensive!) contact solution. I am very happy with my experience and highly recommend Modern Eyes and Dr. Franklin! read more

I have gone to Modern Eyes for the past 6 years and Dr. Franklin is by far the best optometrist I've ever had. She is professional, patient, methodical, and listens to my concerns. The facilities are clean and comfortable and best of all, they utilize retinal imaging (instead of just dilation drops).
