Visiting St. Augustine this weekend we had our last dinner at Llama Restaurant. This is a small quaint Peruvian restaurant serving dishes true to the culture. The moment you walk through the doors the mixture of pan-flute music and simple lines of wooden beamed ceilings puts you right in the mountains of Peru. We started with champagne cocktails; Poma Rosa: champagne, pomegranate juice, simple syrup & fresh oregano. Flower Bomb; prosecco, elder flower, rose essence and an orchid sphere. Refreshing! Appetizers were: ceviche made with fresh Covina and an amazing citrus blend. We also tried the Anticuchos; beef hearts that had been dry rubbed, skewered and grilled .. the skewers were piercing fresh Peruvian corn and roasted potato slices! Waiting on dinner the chef sent out champagne & tamarind cocktails to sip!! Dinner was equally as amazing! Terry had the Lomo, tender beef chunks marinated & grilled with veggies and jasmine rice; Mel had Seco, a piece of beef slow roasted and topped with a cilantro herb sauce on top of beans; Nelly and I both enjoyed the Chupe, a prawn chowder filled with fresh prawns, potatoes, chunks of fresh sautéed fish, Peruvian corn, cilantro and a cream fish stock topped with a beautifully poached egg...sinful! Fantastic restaurant. Authentic Peruvian food. Some of the best I've ever had. The Chupe was so delicious. It's a Peruvian Shrimp Chowder and the portion was huge. After I was done I wanted more. The Paiche is a fish you don't normally see. It's cooked in a Banana Leaf. A awesome flaky white fish. The Yuca fries that comes with it is to die for. The Tres Leche cake is a must. Wow! First visit at Llama Restaurant and It won't be my last. My husband and I reserved a table for our anniversary. Every course was delightful both in flavor and presentation. The staff was kind and informative. I had a pesto pasta and pork belly dish that was garnished with small lightly pickled peppers and a soy glaze. What a wonder mix of flavors! This is the one restaurant that can change EVERYTHING in St. Augustine. Look at menus at the other local high end restaurants. They all look the same. I've bookmarked many. But the restaurant scene is pretty homogenous. Grilled local catch done in such and such way. Peel and eat shrimp. Beachy cocktails. Nearly the same thing, different place. This is the game changer. This is haute food. Llama is unabashed and unique in their flavors, menu and plating. I saw it before I moved here, eager to see what they had. And I was not disappointed. I hope more restaurants see Llama and emulate it in a way to make themselves unique. It's high end food without being intimidating. Great flavor. Unique. The ceviches were delicious. I had no idea what our table ordered as an entree -- we all ordered differently -- and we were all excited. The drinks are fantastic and made to order. Fairly attentive waitstaff. First time in St. Augustine and was looking for a dinner spot off the beaten path. Staying in a B&B downtown, so it was a nice walk across the bridge to the Llama Restaurant. This place is amazing! It's popular, despite its unassuming appearance, so make sure to get a reservation. We got lucky and were able to sit at the bar since we had not made a reservation. Noticed the tasting menu with wine pairing on the last page of the menu, but bummed because it said you needed a reservation for the tasting menu... NOPE! The chef made an exception for us, since we weren't in a rush, and spent the next 2.5 hours eating our way through Peru. The staff was so sweet and personable, chatting with us between courses, reminiscing about past trips to Machu Picchu, and taking the extra time to walk us through the nuances of each dish and the wines. My cousin and I finally made it to Llama after hearing all the great reviews. It's a cute Peruvian restaurant located in Saint Augustine. Not many tables inside but well appointed. They have a bar at the rear of the restaurant and have a good selection of European wines. They also make various champagne cocktails. We started with the ceviche appetizer and it was wonderful. I loved the marinade and the fish was very fresh. The presentation was lovely as well. My favorite dish of the night. For the second dish we shared the pulpo octopus. I was excited for this dish but I have to say it was boring. Nice presentation, the octopus was tender, but I didn't care for the way it was cooked. It was boiled and I prefer my octopus grilled. I've had octopus a few times grilled and I feel it gives the dish a much deeper layer of flavor. I also didn't care for the brown colored sauce that decorated the plate. For the final dish we ordered the Aji chicken dish. It was shredded chicken, peppers, potatoes and served over rice. It almost looked like chicken salad. This was my least favorite dish. I thought it was extremely salty and lacked flavor. I've had Peruvian style chicken before and was not expecting this type of preparation. I guess I had much higher expectations after reading all the great reviews. I was expecting to be blown away but I felt my dining experience was average at best. read more

You decide... My wife and I were looking forward to having dinner at Llama.. only to be disappointed. Upon arrival, our waiter (the only waiter) greeted us with a horrible attitude. I asked for the restroom and was told to exit the restaurant and go around the building. Rather confused, I joked and asked if it was less than a block away, to be answered with a disgruntled look. We were then seated. As I looked over the menu, hearing a slight accent, I asked the waiter if he spoke any Spanish, (considering we were in a PERUVIAN restaurant) seemingly offended, the waiter replied nastily, "No, we are in the US and I don't have to speak any spanish". Not willing to tolerate his aggressive attitude, me and my wife excused ourselves from the establishment. I did NOT want to write this review, as I felt it was not fair to the owner/chef (Marcel). The second you pull into the parking lot you can feel the charm, charisma, and integrity that Llama has to offer. We were greeted with a friendly face and after ordering a round of intriguing (in a good way) yet delicious drinks, I was recommended the Causa Trio off the brunch menu. The chicken was savory, yet smooth. The shrimp, had a perfect texture and was just the right amount of creamy, blending with the potatoes in a whole new way. The octopus was very well cooked and had a a semi-bitter purple black olive blend on top. A very different taste but those willing, excellent to say the least. As for the drinks and the very versatile bartender and waiter, they were top notch. Between the two of us we tried 4 separate mimosa blends, each better than the last. This place is overrated. Tiny portions at very high price. One of the most amazing and important things of latin culture (specially in Perú) is the tasty food at a reasonable price and portion. Period. Every latin american knows that. If you guys are trying to be a fancy and an upscale restaurant is ok. No problem with that. However, if your intention is to bring the latin traditions to the cuisine, well you must visit Perú first. For same or lower price you can go to Jacksonville or Clearwater (including the gas) to try a REAL peruvian food and experience. I grown up eating and cooking peruvian food. The best food ever! The place is smaller so definitely get a reservation but I'm convinced the whole menu is probably divine. Everything my husband and I ordered was very flavorful and beautifully presented. The chef is obviously very talented. The service was pretty good also, the waiter accidentally added an extra drink on our bill but gave us a cash refund so it didn't take as long to process. Get out of downtown St Augustine, this place hands down the best place we have eaten at our entire trip. The chef owner is from Peru trained at Cordon Blue Luma. The waiter, George everything he recommended was fantastic got traditional cerviche, then the salmon cerviche with egg wow too both, octopus good, the we split the Arapaima fish in banana leaf, with the queso Hellato . This place was phenomenal. Presentation so beautiful you almost didn't want to eat, food so delicious you forgot you were in small-town Florida, and fantastic service. They bring amazing flavors to you in a way that's unpretentious; just great, real food. I drank their pinot noir and shared the ceviche lima, pulpo, and anticuchos with my dining partner and then had the paiche for my entree. I'm not going to ruin the dining experience for you by even attempting to describe what these dishes looked or tasted like, but I assure you they were all spectacular. So spectacular, in fact, that I was too into the food to remember to whip out my phone and take any pictures. We struck gold - we arrived at 7 on a Friday without a reservation and were able to take a table, but I don't recommend this method. It's super intimate inside, so a reservation is your best bet. We remain so impressed with Llama's attention to detail creating one of the top intimate, high quality date night experience available in St Augustine. The restaurant itself is small and fills quickly, so unless you're planning to go immediately after they open, I _highly_ recommend getting a reservation through Open Table. We tend to gravitate toward their mimosas on the drink menu, the flower bomb being a favorite, which features a round ice cube with flower petals within it. The causa and ceviche appetizers are a favorite. Last night, I tried the pulpo, which is octopus served carpaccio style, and quite delicious. The chef sent out a sample of a guava flavored Pisco drink as the intermezzo (palate cleanser) course, which was amazing and cruel all at once. It was SO good we immediately wanted more! I like to try a different entree each time I go in, and last night I set my sights on the Parihuela, a seafood soup with a tomato base, herbs, and a rocoto pepper. The white scallop shell served on top serves a nice visual contrast to the darker soup. The rocoto pepper looks a bit like a tomato itself, so our waiter alerted me to it, and recommended I just eat tiny bites of the pepper with the seafood. I ate several bites of the soup that way, but found the base of the soup so flavorful on its own that forgot about the pepper after a while. The soup included shrimp, scallop, prawn, and crab leg, a few of which are still in shells. Having cooked seafood soups myself, the shells add so much depth to the broth. I admit, I did find it a bit awkward to open the crab leg with the provided cracker. Depending on your grace and skill with one of those (which I have little), or if you're on a REALLY hot date, you might opt to leave the crab leg in the bowl and appreciate its flavor through the soup. Portions here are on the smaller side, clearly aiming for quality over quantity. We typically spend about $50-60 per person here, and its not hard to shoot past that if you're hungry. If you're coming here really hungry, I recommend checking out the the Mar y Tierra, which I found very filling as well as being incredibly tasty. Everything about this place was a great experience! the food was delectable: we had the beef hearts and ceviche lima and Anticuchos appetizers, the mar y tierra and cordero cusqueno entrees, and algarrobin custard for dessert. The meal included toasted corn kernel appetizer and a plantain smoothie shot pallatte cleanser. The food was impeccable, the presentation beautiful and the atmosphere charming.
