Liman is a precious and luminous secret on the coast of Brooklyn, far removed from "hipster hot spots". Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that I could be sitting in BROOKLYN - on an outdoor deck with a feel and view that was reminiscent of Istanbul - fresh and windy breezes, overlooking a body of water with boats (No need to differentiate between Sheepshead Bay and the Bosphorus), and the chance to practice my broken Turkish. We were there after a day of biking and beaching (Manhattan Beach) and wanted something fresh and **light** before the hour bike ride home. We ordered three items and they were perfect for sitting outside on a hot day. 1) The Ezme salad was light and fresh. 2) The cubed potatoes were great, but the garlic sauce that they put on top was unbelievable (Note: Our server recommended this, the garlic sauce does not usually accompany these potatoes). 3) The St. Peter's Fish was fresh and excellent. We ordered *one* entree - fillet style and grilled (at the server's recommendation). The portion was huge and our server split the fish into two plates. Note: For the oenephiles, their wines are all imported from Turkey. I came to this restaurant because I was really in the mood for seafood and because of the four star rating. The restaurant is clean and staff is friendly. I had the octopus salad as an appetizer which I really enjoyed. It had tons of flavor and was seasoned nicely. For the main course I ordered the Chilean Sea Bass. Every time I ordered this at other restaurants it was delicious. So I figured, hey if it ain't broke why fix it? My wife decided to order the same. While the plate was presented nicely, it lacked a lot of flavor. I was really disappointed after seeing the 4 stars this place contained on yelp. For dessert I ordered the baklava. I took one bite and instantly caught type a diabetes. It was so sweet, a pancreatic transplant was the only cure for the sugar rush. The check came out to a little over $100 for it all. Normally I don't care about spending $100 on food. But I don't feel like this food is worth the price. I won't be returning to an expensive restaurant that serves mediocre food. read more

I was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed the food last night at Liman, although I was hesitant at first when my friend suggested it because of the location and the parking which can often be a nightmare on Emmons Ave. However, there was ample parking since it is still a little out of season and it was raining. The restaurant itself is on the water, so it is imperative to request to sit in the room closest to the water for a lovely view. We shared a large salad for an appetizer with tomatoes, cucumber, and feta, the grilled octopus, and the hummus dip. Each was absolutely fantastic, especially the hummus, because it had so much flavor and the bread that they serve with it is hot and delicious. I also appreciated that the octopus was sliced up and easy to share and was grilled well so it wasn't rubbery or chewy at all. For dinner, many of us ordered the Surf and Turf which consists of grilled shrimp kabobs with lamb, rice, and zucchini and carrots. The rice was absolutely fantastic, the vegetables seasoned with with garlic, the shrimp grilled to perfection, and the lamb very tender and cooked to the temperature I had requested. The table also ordered several desserts to split among each other and they were all outstanding: chocolate covered strawberries, tiramisu, rice pudding, chocolate souffle, and baklava. The only one that wasn't superb was the baklava and that is the one that you would think would be the best. It was lacking honey for sweetness and the phyllo dough and nuts had no crisp to it so it was just a mush of nuts. The servers were attentive, however, we all found that they were a bit too attentive. No one wants servers standing over them and staring as you are talking and eating...like can we have just a little space? Considering that we ordered several appetizers, entrees, desserts, and lot and lots of wine, the bill was quite reasonable per person including tip. If you are looking for a place on the water that has a lot of seafood options and are in this part of Brooklyn, this would be a solid choice. read more

If lunch for two costs over a hundred dollars, it should taste like one hundred dollars. I was greatly disappointed with this meal. My husband and ordered the octopus salad, and we initially thought that the meal was going to be out of this world. The bread fabulous, can't say much about drinks because we opted out of having anything other than a coke and passion fruit and you can't mess that up now can you? Although I shouldn't be surprised if someone did but anyway, the meal was off to a great start. But then, the main course. How can the appetizer and bread be better than the main course? And it's not like it was slightly better. The appetizer was delicious, the main course, ehh. We ordered the Chilean Sea Bass. We used to order that in Miami from a place called Oceans Prime, which was pricey but not as pricey as this place and it was out of this world with truffles. The food here is really good and always fresh. My Favorites include the Mediterranean Salad, octopus salad (really amazing here), whole Saint peters fish, etc. despite never really expecting outstanding service in south Brooklyn, I was really disappointed with my recent reservation for the reasons below: I called about 2 weeks in advance to reserve a table for 14 people. I called back about 2 times to follow up with questions and I always spoke to the girl who picked up the phone who gave me one piece of information, and was finally transferred to a manager who provided me with different information both times. That should have been a sign. I ordered a cake from the venue in advance and called to confirm twice that the cake will be ready for the day of the group reservation and ... whop-tee-do- no cake! They claimed that it was "not on the reservation" but I called twice to confirm! The day of the reservation I called to confirm that it is cool enough, because my cranky Russian relatives can't sit still when the temperature is even remotely uncomfortable. The girl on the phone said that they have 3 ACs running and that it was fine. I know that it was very warm outside that day but when your room has a lot of people, 3 ACs means nothing. It was warm. When we arrived and saw that it was warm, I asked if there is room in the other section of the restaurant and the reply from the hostess was "this whole section is free but our staff will eat here." I feel like she could have just said that "it's reserved"- but don't tell me that you are prioritizing your own staff's comfort as opposed to a client. During the meal a waiter that was helping in the area came to tell me not to stack plates (I stacked 2 plates from finished appitiZers) because he will get in trouble from the manager for not doing his job. I explained to him that I was done and he can't tell me not to stack the plates. He repeated that the manager will think he is not doing his job. I get what he wanted to say but there is a better and more customer-service friendly way of handling this situation. During our meal, while it was super warm and sunny outside, they decide to randomly Lift the canopy that was hanging over us because they needed to take a picture for their new menu. There was a lot of staff around but glasses and pitchers were empty. I must say, however, the waiter that was actually assigned to our table was great. It seemed like he had very little help, including the support from managers (who were watching the World Cup). I was expecting to have a nice, calm, smoothe family dinner. Liman is one of the top Turkish restaurants in the area. It is up there with Taci's Betyi. I found the quality to be on a similar level as Taci's, but found Liman to be pricier. Liman also specializes in Seafood and has a waterfront view overlooking Sheepshead Bay and Manhattan Beach. I recommend the Shepheard's salad as an appetizer. It's a little peppery, yet very delicious and flavorful. I made sure to dip bread in the salad's juices. I also liked the tarama and hummus spreads. I found the stuffed mussels as well as the fried mussels to be interesting ways of serving mussels. I think they're worthwhile to try if you haven't tried mussels prepared like this. For the main course, I tried an open faced fish, shrimp skewers, and lamb chops. I heard the St. Peter's fish is very good, but I was too full from the appetizers to order an entree for myself. The entree portions are quite large and are shareable. The desserts are all good to. I liked the baklava, the kunefe, one of the puddings, and the mousse. The baklava had slight apricot flavor to it. I think it was a flavored honey which gave it this flavor. The service came in rounds. When the waiters were around our table, they were helpful and attentive; however, there were stretches of time when no waitstaff was around to replenish bread or refill drinks. read more

Had the sangria, Turkish ezme salad which had a nice kick/spice, shepherds salad, octopus salad, cubed liver, calamari, hummus, mixed meat plate, and salmon. Everything was great. We really enjoy our stay and service in this cozy restaurant and service !! Our table was on the waterfront it was very pleaseant. The fish soup and white sangria delicious but overpriced. Pulpo and Calamari for appetizer was the best Highly recommended!!! About our entree, fresh fish and home fried potatoes yummy , the baby lamb the best we eat in USA. When the lady showded us the tray with those delicious desserts we were not able to say NO , we ordered 3 different kind of desserts with a unforgettable Turkish coffee. Even though the food and service was legit the only disappointed issue were the bathrooms, there are 2 old and very small bathrooms that need to be well upgrated. Both bathrooms ( bar area and dinning room ) were dirty and one had a water-leak. During our 2 hours stay, no one from the restaurant crew was able to do regularly maintenance despite the amount of people that visit the restaurant. They have The Best shrimp kebab, and I pretty much order the same dish every time (boring, I know lol). If you are a shrimp lover, I promise you, you will enjoy it. After coming here for a few times, you become one of the locals and are treated accordingly. Sometimes you don't even have to tell them to bring sauce or cheese on the side, because they already know it. The food speaks for itself. Fresh, clean, healthy... You can always see familiar faces at Liman on these nights. The Sheppard salad with feta is a must order. The spicy ezme Salad hummus, babaganoosh, jajik, spinach hot or cold are also must gets. The St. Peter's and Bronzino are always great. Try the homemade potato chips. And to finish the meal you have to get their kenafeh! It's sooooooo good! I highly recommend Liman. Liver cubes-extremely entertaining dish, but don't forget to onion and to squeeze some lemon juice to bring a full taste of it just like you do to fry calamari. One order is big enough to share with two people. My husband has the Sea Bass filet which was out of this world. Aunt and uncle split a fish which they claim was also very good. Well i am giving this one star for food and nice servers . But restaurant policy is quite awful. I was there with my cousin and having good time until some smokers started ro bother us. And i told them that i am not comfortable with it. And after having smoke into my food , i went to talk to Manager that what is your rule about smoking??!! Went there for my 27th wedding anniversary, with my wife and 2 adult children. They set us up with a nice table in the back, very nice ambience. We started out with cocktails, and apps. The calamari was so tender you could cut it in half with a fork! We also order humus, Shepard salad, and zucchini pancakes. So delicious!! For dinner I had the Liman Salmon, which was a salmon filet on eggplant purée. The purée was so delicious, tasted like mashed potatoes. My wife had the lamb kebab and shrimp, and my son had shrimp kababs. The shrimps were wonderfully grilled and huge! Everything was so good!! Attractive location in Sheepshead Bay. Restaurant is clean and service is good. Food leaves a lot to be desired. Fish is fresh but very heavily salted and heavily fried when asked for it to be lightly pan fried. For the prices they charge the seafood should be the freshest possible and expertly prepared which is not the case. I've had much better seafood at other restaurants . An average bill can easily come to $200 or more. Also they charge a 3% fee for using a credit or debit card. Black Sea Grill does a much better job. read more

Food was fresh and would definitely return although the greeting we received upon arrival was questionable. We were greeted as if we were in the wrong place or lost. It didn't give us a warm and cozy or welcome feeling. Portions and pricing are spot on as are quality of product and freshness. Wait staff was attentive and service overall was good. Loved being on the water and on a nicer day would actually sit outside. One thing we did was request a table by the window and they put us close but not exactly although there were tables free (no reserved sign) where they could have placed us so that also contributes to this 4 star rating versus 5.
