Went to Sawa for dinner with a group of six on a Friday night, and it was a great dinner. When you walk in, you are immediately greeted by a giant oven baking fresh pita as well as an open kitchen. There is also an outdoor dining area, as well as a mid-sized dining room and we were seated near the window. Sawa serves Lebanese cuisine with some more modern dishes. Additionally, they have a mostly Lebanese wine list, which gave us an opportunity to try some new wines. We ordered both a red and a white for the table, and I was especially drawn to the red, as the red was served chilled, light-bodied, and very enjoyable. Nearly all of the reds and whites on the menu are from Lebanon, with just one red from Morocco, plus a couple sparkling options from Lebanon as well. We started with several dips for the table: hummus, baba ghannouj, and muhammara. The hummus was incredibly smooth, and the muhammara was especially flavorful with large pieces of walnut throughout. Everyone at the table receives fresh pita, and we ended up ordering a few more to share. We also shared the Brussels sprouts and the snap peas. The Brussels sprouts were rich and flavorful, but the snap peas really stood out. They were unlike anything I have tasted before, intensely mint, served with garlic mint labneh, and very delicious. For mains, we focused on lamb: two orders of the lamb ribs, two orders of the kafta, and two orders of the sfeeha. We probably over-ordered by about one entrée, but otherwise it was the right amount of food for six people. The lamb ribs were phenomenal, fall-off-the-bone tender and packed with flavor. The lamb pies were also very good and came with a delicious dipping sauce. The kafta was good, though not quite as memorable as the other lamb dishes, but still very satisfying. Service was attentive throughout the meal, and despite the number of dishes on the table, the staff handled everything smoothly. The table got a little crowded at times, but it was manageable. I would absolutely recommend Sawa, especially for anyone who enjoys trying something a little different. They do classic Lebanese dishes very well, while also offering some creative dishes that feel unique and memorable. I am already looking forward to going back. read more

Great flavors, though the prices are quite high. The rakakat (halloumi rolls) were crispy and filled with a cheesy and herby filling. The mudardra was a new dish - stuffed and roasted cabbage on a skewer served over beluga lentils and rice. The rice was rich and hearty. The cabbage was nutty from the sliced almonds, and was covered in a barbecue-like sweet and spicy date sauce. I also had the tahini genie drink, which was sweet and had a velvety texture. The bill came to $88 with tax and tip, which is pretty steep. The quality is pretty good though, so it might be worth the occasional splurge. read more

Sawa has two inside seating spaces but we sat outside in the garden on a large table. The ambiance was lovely on a summer evening - sitting under the string fairy lights as the sky darkened. The food was delicious. We devoured 3 of the dips between six of us (my favorite was the baba gannouj) which come with warm fresh pita. We ordered extra pita for one each but I don't think it was necessary as they are large. The tabouleh was nice and refreshing. The heirloom tomatoes were also tasty and served with a chili oil and garlic toum. We enjoyed a few lamb dishes and all the lamb is from Australia so it tastes nice and not gamey. Lamb ribs and skewers were very good. The whole fish was also super nice, no bones and well cooked. The osmaliyeh was my favorite dessert. Service was a bit slow and weirdly timed with some odd breaks between, but a little bit pricey. read more

I took my daughter to dinner here. She picked it. It was an excellent experience. The interior space is designed well and offers the customers a decent amount of space. The space could benefit from some sound deadening as it was a little loud, but in all fairness, it was a FULL house. Our server greeted us with a big smile, and he made some excellent suggestions with respect to food and drink. We had some great cocktails and approximately 2-3 dishes each. I love the tapas format as it allows us to share. We tried the baba ghannouj, tabbouleh, rakakat, freekeh, pita, and sambousek. EVERYTHING was excellent. The food was expertly prepared and presented. Came here for a dinner with some friends on a Sunday with a reservation. Their reservations get pretty filled up so definitely place one ahead of time! Our waitress was very informative and helpful and recommended some dishes. We got the hummus and labneh for dips with extra pita. Their apps rotate seasonally so what we got might not be available anymore, just to note. For apps, we got the heirloom tomatoes, fried potatoes, and lamb ribs. For entree, we got the fish in tomato stew and lamb kafta. The dips were great, definitely do not skip on these. You have to get at least 1-2 dips I'd say! The pita is soft and delicious and you can actually see the pita being made when you walk into the entrance. The heirloom tomatoes were delicious and it was the last day to get it as it's a seasonal summer dish. It was so fresh tasting and seasoned great, I loved it. The lamb ribs were very tender and fell off the bone. The potatoes disappointed me because they were fried so crispy that the inside was not fluffy and it took a bit of force to stick a fork through a piece. I like garlic but these were heavily seasoned with garlic and then served with garlic dip on the side, it was an overpowering overall. The entrees were good but honestly the apps and dips were the star of the dinner. For the price point, I expected the entrees to be bigger. Overall, I did feel full and satisfied by the end of dinner. Flavor was not lacking at all in any dish and as mentioned, the dips and apps were the stars so I'd recommend going and getting several of those and maybe skipping entrees and the potatoes unless you really enjoy a crispy potato and lots of garlic. read more

I was able to get a table for two the same week of the reservation. The restaurant was on the smaller side with a very tight entrance which made it hard for multiple parties waiting to be seated. We got the muhumarrah dip which came with one warm pita. We paid an extra 4 dollars for an additional pita. I didn't really think much about it, but other reviewers did mention how ridiculous it was that they would charge 4 dollars for an additional pita. I guess I never really appreciated that Al Badawai serves unlimited warm pita. We split the chicory salad, octopus and lamb chops. Everything was done very nicely and well seasoned. The octopus was on a bed of heavenly green acidic sauce with couscous. The lamb chops came in four medium rare pieces on a bed of seasoned and cooked green onions and a spicy yogurt sauce with a kick. Last night the restaurant we had planned to go to in the area ended up being surprisingly closed, and we popped out to Yelp to figure out what else was great in the neighborhood. We had been to Sawa when it first opened to much fanfare, and we found it solid but weren't blown away. This visit was different! Every single dish we got was fantastic. The ambiance is as beautiful as ever, the service is pleasant and fast (we sat at the small bar, to be fair). A fantastic surprise dinner. For the dishes, their Tabbouleh was the surprise favorite for me. I've had a *lot* of Tabbouleh, and they perfectly balanced the ingredients with the acidity to get something with just the right tang and crunch. The sambosek meat pies were also great, reminding me of mini-kibbie, great flavored lamb and perfectly crunchy. Their bread, right out of the oven, highlighted the very high quality Hummus and Mouhamara. Lastly, when I ordered the Arak I was asked "would you like it served traditionally?" - and when I said yes, they did it correctly with separate ice and water (it's shocking how many Lebanese restaurants fail this). The place itself is very minimalistic in their design. Anyways, we started off with drinks so I got the non-alcoholic one called toot toot (more on the sweeter side) and my friend got the ksara merwah which is a Lebanese wine. I tried it and it was a bit on the dry side for myself so I just ordered the mocktail. The hummus with beef cheeks + pine nuts were just alright. The sambousek which are deep fried meat pies were really good. Last but not least the akhtabut was my favorite dish with the Octopus that comes with Couscous. In the end, we enjoyed this meal and it was definitely worth trying but did we absolutely love it? I'm not sure we did. We went for a later meal and the staff was super friendly and inviting, which was nice. The space is a BIT cramped and we happened to be between two large parties. Started with the hummus and wagyu beef cheek. While the wagyu was bound to be good, I'm not sure if added much to the hummus. The hummus was fine (certainly not the best I've had) and the pita was actually a bit thinner than I would have liked. Got the rakakat, mostly because it's a fun word to say. This was like a fancy cheese stick. Overall good but nothing terribly special. Kibbeh nayeh was next, which I was on the fence about ordering (not a huge tartare fan) and was pleasantly surprised by this. Akhtabut was next and is a must. We were always going to love this dish and it really was the star of the night. Cooked perfectly and aesthetically a beautiful dish- I think all octopus should now be served with pearl couscous. Modern Lebanese restaurant with a contemporary atmosphere. We walked in on a week night and were seated at the bar. Full bar with a decent selection of wines by the glass. Just two bottled/canned beer options. Interesting list of cocktails. We started with the hummus plus beef cheek cubes and pine nuts. Hummus was on the garlicy side. Beef cheeks were soft and tender. It came with one freshly baked pita which was sufficient to clean up the whole plate of hummus. Next, we shared the crispy potatoes. Unfortunately, these were the only miss of the night. Potatoes weren't crispy and were on the soft side. My guess is that the baking tray was likely overcrowded. They were also very garlic forward and came with a garlic aioli for even more garlic. I'm not a fan of ketchup, but I found myself craving that or something else to cut through all the garlic. I think the dish has all the right elements, and I could see it being excellent on another day. For the main course, we shared the lamb chops. The were cooked to a perfect medium as we requested. There were four pieces in the $48 order. It came with roasted onions, parsley, and I believe an aioli. Lamb chops were my favorite item of the evening! Juicy, a little greasy, and very forward on the lamb flavor. There were two gender neutral restrooms. One was handicap accessible. The restrooms were pretty nice. I'm stuck between three and four stars, but closer to four. Sawa is solid. I'd go back if someone wanted to go with me or it was nearby to an errand. Food? Generally pretty good. The baba ghanouj nails the creamy texture and smoky flavor, and we devoured the fresh pitas as fast as they arrived. The seasonal gem salad was interesting, at least. Lettuce-forward, a nicely tangy dressing, but I should have stuck to something more Lebanese. I liked the rakakat (cheese cigarellos) and the arnabeet (cauliflower florets in tahini) more, and my husband said the half chicken was solid. I wouldn't quite rate the food on the "can't stop thinking about it" level, but it was good. Sawa has a nice selection of alcohol, including several cocktails spiked with the licorice flavor of traditional Lebanese arak and lots of nice Lebanese wines to choose from. What Sawa does nail, though, is ambiance and service. It's at once relaxed and elegant, not too fussy but not too bare bones. I apologetically asked our server if we could get two small plates as apps, then the other two when my husband got his large plate, ready for a lecture about how tapas come out when they're ready. "Oh sure, I can do it in any order you like," she winked. Two courses later, she brought us complimentary glasses of Prosecco after noting we were celebrating our anniversary. Wow. What a lovely dinner. I recently came to Sawa for my birthday dinner and it did not disappoint! All the food was amazing, the drinks were good, and the atmosphere was so nice. I'd highly recommend the fatteh batenjen - literally the tastiest eggplant I've ever had. I also loved the rose water g+t. Everything had such a wonderful balance of flavors. Our server was so nice and attentive to our table. The inside of the restaurant is relatively small, I'd say the max number of people you'd want to eat here with is 4, but it's an amazing date or double date spot. A lot of good with some service caveats...hopefully they will work those out and it will be worthy of a return visit. Nice bright space was welcoming from the start...the hostess telling us there was a reservation at 8 when ours began at 545 squashed that a bit. We were there with 2 kids: had service been efficient, it wouldn't have been an issue at all. Unfortunately, there were hiccups in that regard in multiple ways, so much so that despite mostly excellent food, we left annoyed. We ordered drinks but needed more than the 30 seconds we were offered to consider the menu. Our server did not return for 20 minutes (not an exaggeration). I don't know if they were personal friends of hers but she spent an unaccountably ridiculous amount of time at one table at the expense of everyone else. Our drinks languished and sweated on the bar. Noone else brought them over. By the time the drinks were brought to us, mine nearly slipped out of my hand from condensation and the ice was considerably melted in the drinks for our kids. No apology, no comment. We were told we should order between 8-9 dishes. Sounded like a lot and you have to pay for extra pita (the dips only come with one). Annoyed that pita costs $4 apiece to have sufficient for the table. They should amend that pricing - it's offensively high. We were led to believe that the mains came with nothing so we were strongly encouraged to add a second order of the potatoes. More on that in a moment. Hummus with wagyu was excellent. Muhummara was good but standard. The fried cheese was delicious. Salad was good but not totally necessary. Squid was very chewy - not great, and definitely more than we needed. Potatoes kind of ruined the meal. I like garlic but the next day after full minutes of swishing with listerine, it's still all I can taste. Serious overkill. I couldn't even taste the main dishes and again, service really faltered here and we waited 20 minutes between the squid and the mains so we were basically full by the time they arrived. The fish DID come with pilaf so the second potatoes were totally unnecessary and annoying at this point. We had a taste of the fish and lamb, both of which were good, but service issues meant we 1. over-ordered 2. were sitting there too long and filled up and 3. ended up asking for boxes to take the rest home. Despite our server seeing we were doing so (they don't box it for you, the boxes are kind of flimsy and don't hold together well), she never asked us if we wanted dessert or anything else. We had to ask someone else for the check because she never returned and again was busy lavishing attention on one table at the expense of the rest of the restaurant. Would we return? I don't know. The food was good overall but would definitely stick to a couple of small place. I hope they expand their drinks menu as the glass of rose I had later wasn't great and the cocktails were kind of meh. For a $350+ meal, I expected better. read more

I've tried quite a few Middle Eastern places in the city and the new Lebanese restaurant @sawa_nyc in Park Slope Brooklyn is incredible! Every dish from the dips and mezze to the entrees and desserts were delicious! Their pita is also freshly made (you can watch them) and the best I've had in NY so far! Sawa is now my favorite Middle Eastern restaurant in NYC. Coming from a Syrian background, I have to say that the food is very authentic Middle Eastern flavors. We had the hummus with beef cheeks, babganoush, and mahumarra appetizer, and all were excellent. The owner recommended the gem salad. Met a fellow foodie last night to indulge in some delicious eats at the newly opened @sawa_nyc . I believe I read that this is from the same team as Evyal and Sofreh, which are still two spots on my list. Sawa offers a variety of Lebanese dishes that felt elevated but still comforting. We ordered: - Hummus + wagu beef cheek: this is an absolute must. The beef is so tender and is sweet braised to perfection that is plays so well with the savory, nutty hummus and fresh baked, warm, fluffy pita. - Arnabeet (Cauliflower): this was another hit. The cauliflower is addictively fried and crunchy and when tossed in the spicy tahini, it's craveable (we also topped out fresh pita and hummus with this little crumble) - Rakakat (halloumi cheese rolls) we really enjoyed these as well, my only thought was that I wish some form of honey or sauce was included with this mezze - Samke Nayeh (cured fluke): this was a nice light and refreshing dish but fell slightly flat, a touch more acidity would have brightened this up a bit - Kibbeh Nayeh (raw lamb pate), this was a last minute add on and while I enjoyed trying it, it did not suit my particular palette. This is a very rich, fatty, pate style dish. Keep in mind it is layered with oil but also is accompanied by a surrounding veg salad. - Kibbeh arnabiyeh: (lamb shank with tahini stew) this is an incredible dish and should definitely be ordered to share. The meat is so delicate and tender it almost falls off the bone. Mixed with this tangy take on tahini, it's a very rewarding taste bud experience. We ordered both desserts: the layali lubnan (semolina pudding) and the namnoura (semolina cake). Both of these were just ok for me. The pudding is fairly savory, only lending a touch amid sweetness from the bananas. Our waiter expressed this is a very old recipe and is normally eaten at breakfast, maybe I'd prefer it then. The cake was a bit dry and reminded me of cornbread. Dessert could be skipped here IMO. For drinks, I got a Sawa Bitters and soda and it was so refreshing; like the perfect summery orange creamsicle drink. TLDR; go immediately (with a group!!) +hummus with beef cheeks: crazy that the addition of beef cheeks was only like $4 more because that stuff is WORTHHH!!! Braised and braised and braised with this sweet and savory jus on top of nutty and smooth hummus. With some freshly baked pita bread it's truly an unforgettable bite +labneh: delicious whipped yogurt with some zesty zaatar. What's not to love +beef pies: a beautifully fatty and juicy Mediterranean fried dumpling. Came with a herbed yogurt sauce which was delightful +cauliflower: honestly like the perfect app. I've honestly never had cauliflower crisped to this perfection +half chicken and green onion and herb sauce: everyone loved this chicken and I thought it was amazing but what really made it was this GREEN SAUCE!!! I started to eat it on its own (no shame ok) +eggplant: roasted eggplant with kind of a warm yogurt and pomegranates. Very good +lamb chops: some of the best lamb I've had. The meat with the roasted onions and the sauce was seriously an experience +semolina cake and pudding: dessert was interesting and I thought it was a bit underwhelming. The cake reminds me of an elevated version of Naya's semolina cake with like an orange custard. I liked this much more than the pudding which didn't have much of a flavor other than the bites of banana Just a great menu in a really beautiful restaurant. What a great addition to the neighborhood! We dined at Sawa their opening week - a Friday evening reservation for two. We thoroughly enjoyed everything we ordered and it was beautifully plated. Some favorites include the babaganoush, the cauliflower, the squid, and the lamb chops. I loved my cocktail - the pomegroni! Service was great and the ambiance is lovely. 4.5 Overall, the food was delicious and the cocktails creative. The potato mezze was sooo tasty and crispy. I wish I could bathe myself in the toum it came with. The tabbouleh and muhammara were super tasty but only came with 1 pita. I understand they make them in house but $4 for each extra pita is insane. It's flour and water. Im vegan (family is not) but kibbeh nayah is a childhood favorite so I asked what farm they get the lamb from and the waitress said it comes from Australia and they've tried to do local but can't fit the demand. We ordered it and I took a nibble and we all agreed it simply wasn't worth it. We could tell it had been frozen. With a dish like that, you need fresh meat. They sacrificed the quality to meet the demand. Maybe they could have people order it in advance ‍ the mains were incredible. The mujaddara was savory and had great textures.
