Went to Sawa for dinner with a group of six on a Friday night, and it was a great dinner. When you walk in, you are immediately greeted by a giant oven baking fresh pita as well as an open kitchen. There is also an outdoor dining area, as well as a mid-sized dining room and we were seated near the window. Sawa serves Lebanese cuisine with some more modern dishes. Additionally, they have a mostly Lebanese wine list, which gave us an opportunity to try some new wines. We ordered both a red and a white for the table, and I was especially drawn to the red, as the red was served chilled, light-bodied, and very enjoyable. Nearly all of the reds and whites on the menu are from Lebanon, with just one red from Morocco, plus a couple sparkling options from Lebanon as well. We started with several dips for the table: hummus, baba ghannouj, and muhammara. The hummus was incredibly smooth, and the muhammara was especially flavorful with large pieces of walnut throughout. Everyone at the table receives fresh pita, and we ended up ordering a few more to share. We also shared the Brussels sprouts and the snap peas. The Brussels sprouts were rich and flavorful, but the snap peas really stood out. They were unlike anything I have tasted before, intensely mint, served with garlic mint labneh, and very delicious. For mains, we focused on lamb: two orders of the lamb ribs, two orders of the kafta, and two orders of the sfeeha. We probably over-ordered by about one entrée, but otherwise it was the right amount of food for six people. The lamb ribs were phenomenal, fall-off-the-bone tender and packed with flavor. The lamb pies were also very good and came with a delicious dipping sauce. The kafta was good, though not quite as memorable as the other lamb dishes, but still very satisfying. Service was attentive throughout the meal, and despite the number of dishes on the table, the staff handled everything smoothly. The table got a little crowded at times, but it was manageable. I would absolutely recommend Sawa, especially for anyone who enjoys trying something a little different. They do classic Lebanese dishes very well, while also offering some creative dishes that feel unique and memorable. I am already looking forward to going back.
Great flavors, though the prices are quite high. The rakakat (halloumi rolls) were crispy and filled with a cheesy and herby filling. The mudardra was a new dish - stuffed and roasted cabbage on a skewer served over beluga lentils and rice. The rice was rich and hearty. The cabbage was nutty from the sliced almonds, and was covered in a barbecue-like sweet and spicy date sauce. I also had the tahini genie drink, which was sweet and had a velvety texture. The bill came to $88 with tax and tip, which is pretty steep. The quality is pretty good though, so it might be worth the occasional splurge.
Sawa has two inside seating spaces but we sat outside in the garden on a large table. The ambiance was lovely on a summer evening - sitting under the string fairy lights as the sky darkened. The food was delicious. We devoured 3 of the dips between six of us (my favorite was the baba gannouj) which come with warm fresh pita. We ordered extra pita for one each but I don't think it was necessary as they are large. The tabouleh was nice and refreshing. The heirloom tomatoes were also tasty and served with a chili oil and garlic toum. We enjoyed a few lamb dishes and all the lamb is from Australia so it tastes nice and not gamey. Lamb ribs and skewers were very good. The whole fish was also super nice, no bones and well cooked. The osmaliyeh was my favorite dessert. Service was a bit slow and weirdly timed with some odd breaks between, but a little bit pricey.
I took my daughter to dinner here. She picked it. It was an excellent experience. The interior space is designed well and offers the customers a decent amount of space. The space could benefit from some sound deadening as it was a little loud, but in all fairness, it was a FULL house. Our server greeted us with a big smile, and he made some excellent suggestions with respect to food and drink. We had some great cocktails and approximately 2-3 dishes each. I love the tapas format as it allows us to share. We tried the baba ghannouj, tabbouleh, rakakat, freekeh, pita, and sambousek. EVERYTHING was excellent. The food was expertly prepared and presented. The value was quite good for the quality and portion size. I was very satisfied, and you will be too.
Came here for a dinner with some friends on a Sunday with a reservation. Their reservations get pretty filled up so definitely place one ahead of time! Our waitress was very informative and helpful and recommended some dishes. We got the hummus and labneh for dips with extra pita. Their apps rotate seasonally so what we got might not be available anymore, just to note. For apps, we got the heirloom tomatoes, fried potatoes, and lamb ribs. For entree, we got the fish in tomato stew and lamb kafta. The dips were great, definitely do not skip on these. You have to get at least 1-2 dips I'd say! The pita is soft and delicious and you can actually see the pita being made when you walk into the entrance. The heirloom tomatoes were delicious and it was the last day to get it as it's a seasonal summer dish. It was so fresh tasting and seasoned great, I loved it. The lamb ribs were very tender and fell off the bone. The potatoes disappointed me because they were fried so crispy that the inside was not fluffy and it took a bit of force to stick a fork through a piece. I like garlic but these were heavily seasoned with garlic and then served with garlic dip on the side, it was an overpowering overall. The entrees were good but honestly the apps and dips were the star of the dinner. For the price point, I expected the entrees to be bigger. Overall, I did feel full and satisfied by the end of dinner. Flavor was not lacking at all in any dish and as mentioned, the dips and apps were the stars so I'd recommend going and getting several of those and maybe skipping entrees and the potatoes unless you really enjoy a crispy potato and lots of garlic.
We sat in the outdoor courtyard on a lovely summer evening and enjoyed a long and relaxed meal. The ambiance was great! For food, we tried 3 dips, 5 mezzes and 4 entrees for a group of 5. Honestly we could have done with 2 less entrees or maybe 1 less entrees and 1 less Mezze - we were very full by the end. But we did squeeze in 2 desserts too. All the food was very solid. The lamb is from Australia and was great in the ribs, chops and sirloin formats. Service was very friendly, although the courses were pretty spaced out so it took a while. Overall the meal was very solid but the price felt a little bit high at the end so not the absolute best value.

Where to even start! Top 5 dining experiences I've had in the world. Service and food. I basically ordered everything because I like trying a bunch dishes. I recommend yall try every single dish we got! Tabbouleh salad (a MUST), hummus, baba ghannouj, labneh, muhammara, Chicory Salad, Caraflex salad, Halloumi Cheese, The Batata hara crispy potato, lamb ribs, kafta, Shish Taouk, and always extra pita! It's made fresh in the front of the restaurant Also our friend ordered the Jezzine Dream cocktail and loved it.
Delicious - my faves were the hummus with beef cheeks, the snap peas with labne, lamb pies, octopus, and the crispy potato. Gem salad was ok but not the star. Would love to try the other dips. Friendly service. Not crazily expensive.
Really cute spot near Park slope! Would come back for the Batata (super crispy flavorful potatoes with toum), octopus dish and the kafta kebabs!!! We also tried the halloumi sticks and the hummus topped with wagyu - also really good. The wagyu has a slight touch of sweetness. Their drinks are super interesting as well. I tried the Jeelab - super refreshing and sweet drink with rose water dates, pine nuts, raises and pomegranate! I've never had anything like that before. The beer is also nice and tart! The only thing I didn't care for was the dessert mainly due to the flavor profile (lots of options with semolina, orange blossom and pistachio but if you are a fan of that then get it!) I was able to get a table for two the same week of the reservation. The restaurant was on the smaller side with a very tight entrance which made it hard for multiple parties waiting to be seated. We got the muhumarrah dip which came with one warm pita. We paid an extra 4 dollars for an additional pita. I didn't really think much about it, but other reviewers did mention how ridiculous it was that they would charge 4 dollars for an additional pita. I guess I never really appreciated that Al Badawai serves unlimited warm pita. We split the chicory salad, octopus and lamb chops. Everything was done very nicely and well seasoned. The octopus was on a bed of heavenly green acidic sauce with couscous. The lamb chops came in four medium rare pieces on a bed of seasoned and cooked green onions and a spicy yogurt sauce with a kick. I would come back again if the reservation isn't hard to come by.

The restaurant wasn't trying to get out over their skis on creativity - they executed what they advertised very well. Have recommended to a number of people. FWIW - I am not a huge Mediterranean restaurant fanatic, but I loved this. Staff was very polite. Ambiance was great. Low yellow lighting. Great for a date spot. We came here with a small group and ordered the following: Hummus Baba ghannouj Labneh - insanely good Muhammara Tabbouleh - so much flavor. Must get Kibbeh- must get Batata hara Lamb shank - my favorite. So tender Beiruti samka harra - amazing sauce Kafta Kastaletta Would definitely come back here. Very pleased with it.
DELICIOUS spot for dinner! Try this spot if you enjoy Lebanese food :) We went as a group of four and thoroughly enjoyed the meal. We opted to split several dips and mezze and skip on the mains, and it was a perfect amount of food. One of the stand outs was the tomato dish with toum. So flavorful! The back patio is beautiful, and a great place to enjoy a meal if the weather is nice. The service was alright. We ended up getting a different dip than we ordered, but this was fine as they were all delicious! It was a busy night when we went. This did not at all detract from the meal and experience. Overall, absolutely recommend this restaurant!
Wonderful meal at Sawa on Saturday night. We were able to get a table for the (beautiful!) outdoor patio about a day in advance. The ambiance is cozy, inviting, and upscale. Service was incredibly warm, and our waiter gave helpful recs when navigating the wine menu, which featured mostly wines from Lebanon. For 2, we got: - baba ghannouj - muhammara - dips come with fresh, fluffy, warm pita - batata hara (crispy, spicy fried potatoes with garlic) - heirloom tomato (with garlic toum and sunflower seeds) - octopus - lamb chops Everything was delicious and extremely flavorful! The heirloom tomatoes were a standout dish: fresh, packed tons of flavor, and I loved how everything went together. The waiter mentioned they're seasonal and will be swapped out for something for the fall season soon. Dips and potatoes were excellent. Octopus was the one weaker spot. The skewer was a bit small and the preparation left the meat a little lackluster and chewy (I'm picky with my octopus!) The lamb chops were very tender with tons of flavor - char, mint, meat. A bit heavy but might just be because I don't eat a ton of red meat. I was VERY full by the end of the meal! I think we could have done 1-2 fewer dishes and still been very satisfied, but I'm glad I got to try so many things. The mains took a while to come out, though I enjoyed the longer, non-rushed, 'let's chat over delicious bites for hours' feeling of the meal overall. Great dining experience. The bill came to about ~$100 per person for the above + a drink (one wine, one mocktail) each. Between the fantastic ambiance, service, and high quality flavors, I found it to be worth the price and great for a treat yourself outing, date, or special occasion. read more
Chef worked at Sofreh - which is one of my faves - and I love Lebanese food, so I was excited to try this spot. Made a reservation for dinner on a Thurs night and tried: + Seaside snap cocktail + Coco logic cocktail + Hummus with Wagyu beef cheek and pine nuts + Baba ghannouj + Snap peas with labneh + Muhammara + sfeeha - baked lamb pies + lamb ribs Cocktails were fine - would get wine next time. Food was excellent, with my favorite dish being the lamb ribs. Baba ghannouj, snap peas and sfeeha were all delicious as well. I do prefer the muhammara at Miss Ada, but would order the rest of the dips (and hummus) here again. 4.5 stars. read more
My friend and I came here for their special end of summer dinner. We got all of the roses to taste - both flight options. All of them were delicious and none of them too sweet at all. We started with some appetizers- the hummus with wagyu beef cheeks was served with hot fresh pita. Then we got the rakakat - halloumi cheese rolls, yum! Finally to start we got the bemyeh, fried okra with spicy tomato sauce - this was outstanding. We shared the kafta as our main and got an extra pita for sharing. This was so delicious with blistered tomatos. For desert we got the burnt honey ice cream and nammoura cake. Both were very tasty but the ice cream with zattar was like nothing we'd ever tried - truly unique. Service was great, vibe was super nice. I would definitely come here again. make a reservation!!! you'll need it even on a weekday dinner. interior is super cute and i'd consider it fancy. service is attentive and overall vibe upscale. definitely pricey - dips are teeny and don't come with the pita ($6/each on the side). personally didn't find the taste worth these trade offs. the pita was good indeed and we could watch them make it fresh though. overall portion sizes were a bit dissatisfying and the taste wasn't interesting enough to make up for it. read more
I'm hardly in this area, but when I am I have to check out the different restaurants. This time around my friend suggested this place. We made reservations, so it wasn't a problem dining here. The place itself is very minimalistic in their design. Anyways, we started off with drinks so I got the non-alcoholic one called toot toot (more on the sweeter side) and my friend got the ksara merwah which is a Lebanese wine. I tried it and it was a bit on the dry side for myself so I just ordered the mocktail. The hummus with beef cheeks + pine nuts were just alright. The sambousek which are deep fried meat pies were really good. Last but not least the akhtabut was my favorite dish with the Octopus that comes with Couscous. All in all, this is a great restaurant if you're in the mood for light food. read more

In the end, we enjoyed this meal and it was definitely worth trying but did we absolutely love it? I'm not sure we did. We went for a later meal and the staff was super friendly and inviting, which was nice. The space is a BIT cramped and we happened to be between two large parties. Started with the hummus and wagyu beef cheek. While the wagyu was bound to be good, I'm not sure if added much to the hummus. The hummus was fine (certainly not the best I've had) and the pita was actually a bit thinner than I would have liked. Got the rakakat, mostly because it's a fun word to say. This was like a fancy cheese stick. Overall good but nothing terribly special. Kibbeh nayeh was next, which I was on the fence about ordering (not a huge tartare fan) and was pleasantly surprised by this. Akhtabut was next and is a must. We were always going to love this dish and it really was the star of the night. Cooked perfectly and aesthetically a beautiful dish- I think all octopus should now be served with pearl couscous. We rounded out the meal with the lamb shank, which was also a really delightful dish with fall-off-the bone tenderness and plating that was very well executed. read more

This was excellent. The baba was among the best versions I've had -- super smoky in a way that really hit. The hummus with beef and muhammara were also excellent, as were the kibbeh nayeh and especially the samke nayeh. read more
Another wonderful dinner at Sawa. Such a beautiful restaurant. I love the minimalist aesthetic. It was busy but the vibe was chill and quite relaxing. We were lucky to have the same server, the amazing and kind Jenny. She offered excellent recommendations and we enjoyed each dish. The standout for me was the octopus. Heavenly, laid on a bright green sauce with soft couscous. The best tabbouleh and hummus to accompany. We also shared the whole fish, beautiful preparation. Ended the meal with a lemon sorbet, a very special dessert. Highly recommend for a superb evening meal. read more

Nice atmosphere, good service. The hummus was just ok but I loved the fresh pita bread. The heirloom tomatoes were special, a lot of flavor for such a simple dish. The rakakat were delicious. The cauliflower appetizer had a nice spice to it and was perfectly cooked. The meat pies had a cinnamon spice that was kind of overpowering. The kafta was incredible and interesting dish. The meat was full of flavor, the garlic whip was outstanding. The lamb shank was a bit dry but the sauce and the grains and greens were perfect. read more

Sawa is a triple threat for an upscale spot- date night worthy ambiance, delicious shared plates, and great service I scored a reservation for 4 here to go on a double date with friends and it was packed on a Wednesday night. That said, it was a lovely place to catch up. It's very vegetarian and pescatarian friendly, more limited for vegans due to dairy in many dishes but they may be able to modify - I didn't ask We shared everything which is definitely the way to go: -baba ghannoj; on point. all the dips come with a freshly baked pita -Muhammara: so flavorful and fresh -grilled chicory salad: refreshing with a bright zesty dressing -rakakat: 4 pieces of mediterranean "mozzarella sticks". Yum -samke nayeh: nicely done but not a standout -Beiruti Samoa Harra: this fish was super high quality and paired with a fantastic stew sauce. I'm stuck between three and four stars, but closer to four. Sawa is solid. I'd go back if someone wanted to go with me or it was nearby to an errand. Food? Generally pretty good. The baba ghanouj nails the creamy texture and smoky flavor, and we devoured the fresh pitas as fast as they arrived. The seasonal gem salad was interesting, at least. Lettuce-forward, a nicely tangy dressing, but I should have stuck to something more Lebanese. I liked the rakakat (cheese cigarellos) and the arnabeet (cauliflower florets in tahini) more, and my husband said the half chicken was solid. I wouldn't quite rate the food on the "can't stop thinking about it" level, but it was good. Sawa has a nice selection of alcohol, including several cocktails spiked with the licorice flavor of traditional Lebanese arak and lots of nice Lebanese wines to choose from. What Sawa does nail, though, is ambiance and service. It's at once relaxed and elegant, not too fussy but not too bare bones. I apologetically asked our server if we could get two small plates as apps, then the other two when my husband got his large plate, ready for a lecture about how tapas come out when they're ready. "Oh sure, I can do it in any order you like," she winked. Two courses later, she brought us complimentary glasses of Prosecco after noting we were celebrating our anniversary. I still give Shukette the nod for hype-beast Middle Eastern tapas in NYC, but if you want to stay in Brooklyn, Sawa absolutely competes. read more
Wow. What a lovely dinner. I recently came to Sawa for my birthday dinner and it did not disappoint! All the food was amazing, the drinks were good, and the atmosphere was so nice. I'd highly recommend the fatteh batenjen - literally the tastiest eggplant I've ever had. I also loved the rose water g+t. Everything had such a wonderful balance of flavors. Our server was so nice and attentive to our table. The inside of the restaurant is relatively small, I'd say the max number of people you'd want to eat here with is 4, but it's an amazing date or double date spot. I've tried quite a few Middle Eastern places in the city and the new Lebanese restaurant @sawa_nyc in Park Slope Brooklyn is incredible! Every dish from the dips and mezze to the entrees and desserts were delicious! Their pita is also freshly made (you can watch them) and the best I've had in NY so far! Not to say all their staff were really nice. Need to try more dishes another time! read more

Sawa is now my favorite Middle Eastern restaurant in NYC. Coming from a Syrian background, I have to say that the food is very authentic Middle Eastern flavors. We had the hummus with beef cheeks, babganoush, and mahumarra appetizer, and all were excellent. The owner recommended the gem salad. It was amazing as well. also had the Kafka, and the meat was perfectly cooked and seasoned. We can't wait to get back again and try some more. Highly recommend! read more

Amazing food! We came here per recommendation from a coworker and loved the food. Restaurant is small, but we managed to get reservation table for 2 on a weeknight. Would definitely want to come back. read more
