Braised lamb shank
Vanessa M.

Food (5/5) - Everything was great but honestly the best thing was the rosewater ice cream, don't sleep on dessert. Tahdig was great and is what people had recommended. Would also call out the date salad where the tangy sauce very much balanced out the sweet dates - and the dates weren't too sticky in your mouth as well, not sure how you select for materials like that really. The lamb shank fell off the bone and the sauce was equal amounts flavourful and hearty without being too greasy or leaving a sheen on your lips. The bread was put to very good use. Ambiance (4/5) - Can get a little crowded but we managed to get a nice seat right by the front of the restaurant looking out the front window to the street. Not too loud or too dim. Service (5/5) - Good recommendations by the staff and they weren't too pushy even though they were booked out for every seating. Price (4/5) - A little on the high end but fair for the quality.

Exceptional Persian food, but you already knew that. Ignore the 1 star reviews as they are misguided. As someone who is lucky enough to regularly experience authentic Persian food, this simply blew me away. It felt like each dish was crafted with purpose if that makes sense. Like, have you ever bit into a garlic piece and felt that its consistency and flavor burst just right? That's what I experienced, and that's why I love dining out. To simply experience what the Chefs have to offer at an immaculate level, something I can't just make myself. Let's start with the Aush. Now, I've had Aush before but not quite like this. The noodles were delicately cooked, surrounded by a thick (but not too thick) green herby sauce. It was served hot and was immediately devoured. So good. The standout of the night was the lamb. Seasoned to perfection and practically falling off the bone due its succulent-ness. If I were still hungry, I would have ordered another. It was simply that good. Finally, the pistachio ice cream was simply divine. Order it. I'm not one to exaggerate my reviews, so you will probably sense how much I enjoyed my meal here. Bravo, Sofreh. I will be back.

This Persian inspired restaurant has a mild yet elegant look .the staff is personable and the lamb is amazing! My wife raves about this place and brought home some food . This place is not far from some deep competition but can hold its own!

The food took two hours and then the Manager, who was unreachable for the last hour, finally came out to our table, looked at us and said that's the industry average and turned around to leave. The waitress looked shocked and tried to speak and he literally put his hand up to her face and shushed her. I have never seen someone treat their staff or the customers this way. We were shocked, we asked for the check to leave without getting the and entrees. Note, I booked this reservation two months in advance for friends visiting out of town for a special occasion.

Wow, Sofreh was so delicious! I went with two friends and we shared some plates. Everything was amazing, and I have no complaints. I really loved the eggplant and whey dip along with the tahini and date salad! The restaurant is cozy and cute, with the staff being very kind and attentive. Our server helped us pick a rice to complement our main entree, which was appreciated! We were too full to get dessert but definitely would come back to try some more dishes and dessert! (Note: They put dairy products on the side since one of my friends is lactose intolerant)

Tahdig, eggplant dip, yogurt shallot dip - A dining table features Persian cuisine with a large piece of bread, eggplant and yogurt dips, and a vegetable salad, with water and plates.

Scored a last-minute Thursday night reservation at 7:45 for a group of four, and it was everything I hoped for and more. I'd been craving Persian food while visiting New York, and Sofreh absolutely delivered. We ordered some of my all-time favorites: * Eggplant and Whey Dip * Shallots & Yogurt * Tahdig * Lamb Shank * Dried Lime & Herb Beef Stew (Ghormeh Sabzi) Every dish was spot-on--beautifully prepared, packed with flavor, and perfect for sharing. The tahdig had that signature golden crust, the eggplant dip was rich and tangy, and the ghormeh sabzi was deeply comforting with its bold herb and dried lime notes. The lamb shank was fall-off-the-bone tender and full of spice. Sofreh strikes a perfect balance between tradition and modern flair. If you're in the city and craving a thoughtful take on classic Persian dishes, this place is a must.

Came here for dinner with my gf and her friend. Absolutely loved the service and food here. The food was amazing. We ordered sofreh bread, tahdig, grilled carrots and yogurt to start. Appetizers were splendid, sweet, and balanced. Carrots were carmelized exactly the way I like them (450F for 20min.) very well balance with honey yogurt For mains, we ordered the catch of the day-striped bass served with stewed herbs and tamarind sauce (slightly spiced) Pomegranate steak, interesting combination and yet still good! Very much enjoyed this dish-sweet and savory Saffron rice Dessert- cardamom rose cake, this was myleast favorite of the night bc it was dense and not much depth in texture/flavor Overall: this was a very delightful for dinner. Everything came out perfectly except dessert. I could tell the chef utilized techniques that not many home cooks can easily replicate at home. Definitely worth a try to venture outside your usual palate 5/5 for me

Tahini & Date Salad

Vegetarians and carnivores alike can rejoice over the delicious offerings at Sofreh. New York is truly experiencing a Renaissance of Persian food which includes the likes of Eyval and Mesiba following Sofreh. And thankfully Sofreh isn't ridiculously unaffordable or pretentious. In fact, Sofreh is the opposite of a finance bro hang. The space gives casual but chic living room loft and the staff are your friends who invited you to dinner and smile as they serve you your plates. The food is well portioned so you can order multiple things to try without needing to order the whole menu to ensure that you don't starve. My favorites for the night were the lamb shank, the tahini & date salad, and the maitake mushrooms. The lamb shank can easily feed two people, the meat is so juicy it falls off the bone, and the braising liquid is amazing with the herb rice. The tahini & date salad is crunchy, creamy, savory and sweet in all the right amounts. And who can resist maitake mushrooms and sunchokes? Just like Sofreh, nyc needs to bring back the elevated but somehow casual dine. And what a big win for vegetarians, seriously more than half of the menu is vegetarian friendly. Gotta love an inclusive menu.

Sofreh sat in my bookmarks list for years but as soon as chef Nasim Alikhani won a James Beard award on the heels of her catering a meal at the White House for Persian New Year, I pulled up their reservations page and felt lucky to get a table. The hype they received was not manufactured, for everything was beautifully and deliciously prepared under the helm of her formidable kitchen. I started with a couple of their cocktails, including "Date Night," which was a rum based drink with date syrup, cream, and aquafaba. This and all their drinks went down so smoothly, and I also appreciated their curated wine list. I really loved the crispy onions in the eggplant dip, and the tahini dressing in the date salad. A side of the Sofreh bread, tahdig, and cilantro rice were also necessary to pair with the large roast chicken dish, which was hearty and saucy. The tahdig was especially memorable because it was perfectly crispy and none of the rice stuck to my teeth, which is something that I find happens a lot with crispy rice. We even ordered some grilled asparagus as the one vegetable dish on our table, and it was amped up with roasted pepitas and some kind of cheese. Smoky aroma was well employed in the cooking of each dish, as were high quality spices that never overpowered the food. The chefs allowed the ingredients to shine on their own without overly seasoning anything. I like their newer restaurant Eyval just fine but their original Sofreh has stood the test of time over the years for good reason.

I LOVE this place! The food is off the charts good. Hearty portions, served quickly. Spices and flavors are plentiful. The meat stew mains were my favorite. The space is small and narrow but bright and airy. Very cosy. Will be back again!

My husband and I stopped by Sofreh for some light bites last week before attending a NY Liberty game and were blown away by the food and drink! Our only regret was not being hungry enough/having enough time to experience the entrees, but the appetizers we shared were all delicious. Our favorite was the maitake mushroom in whey sauce, but the eggplant dip and bruleed sweet potato and feta salad were also super well balanced and tasty. We also ordered two sharbats, the lemon saffron and the basil seed orange blossom, which were super refreshing. Definitely recommend checking this place out for excellent Persian food and hopefully we can come back the next time we're in the city to explore the rest of the menu!

Half Chicken. $38. A bit pricey for the portion size but good quality sauce
Glenn C.

Short review- A bit pricey but excellent quality. Duck was very good and the eggplant whey/kashke bademjan was good quality. I partially prefer Eyval for the price point as it's more unique but both are excellent. I went to this spot a few evenings ago with another person having had a reservation for four that unfortunately dropped to two. I had previously sampled Alikhani's cuisine at her Platform by JBF event and have also been to Eyval which is somewhat of a sister spot as a chef from here opened up that excellent place. The staff was very friendly here and the place has good lighting and the noise wasn't too loud even though the restaurant was quite crowded even for a Wednesday with all the seats taken. The design inside was modern but had some nice accents. The prices are a bit high here (especially with the rice but I'll get to that later) but the food quality was good enough that I didn't mind (almost.) I started with a Sour Cherry Sharbat for $10 which was fine. The other person had a orange blossom based one which she liked. My main appetizer was the Eggplant and Whey Dip for $16 with roasted eggplant, crispy onions, cured whey yogurt, and mint oil. This dish is more commonly listed as Kashke Bademjan where "kashke" refers to the cured whey and the "bademjan" is eggplant. This was a very tasty version with some richness and sweetness from the onions (which was a mix of fried and sauteed) and roasted eggplant. I appreciated that they gave a piece of bread with it which was barbari with some sesame and nigella seeds on it which could have been a bit warmer but was still solid. The other person had the Bruleed Sweet Potatoes for $18 with strained yogurt, lemon tahini, spiced butter glazed, and toasted almonds. The sweet potato was cooked nicely with the sauce being really tasty though the portion size was rather tiny so I'm not sure if it was worth the price point. While ordering our mains which both consisted of stews (or khoresh,) I was surprised that rice did not come with mains. We decided to split an order of the Saffron Rice for $9 consisting of steamed basmati rice topped with saffron rice. I honestly don't care how good the quality of this rice was as I have never seen this before (outside of paying supplements for more flavored rice) and it doesn't help that the rice itself wasn't too good being less buttery and aromatic compared to most other Persian spots (being only better than Miraj which doesn't say much.) There's also a choice of herbed rice ($10) as well as a sweet rice with dates and saffron ($12) with this place not having two of the other more common options; zereshk (barberry usually with orange peel) and my personal preference albaloo (or sour cherry.) The portion size was decent but this feels like a ripoff at best and would probably just order the tahdiq instead for $6 which feels more justified. For my main, I went with the Half Duck "Fesenjan" for $52 with braised leg of duck in pomegranate walnut sauce served with pan roasted duck breast. I love fesenjan/fesenjoon and this was an excellent version of said sauce though I wish there was a bit more of it with the only other place having a comparable version in the city being Nasrin's. By comparison, I found the depth of flavor here just better with a good mix of sourness and sweetness from the pomegranate molasses and earthiness from the ground walnuts. The braised leg was the better part of the duck as it was both very tender and absorbed the sauce while the rest of the duck was good but some pieces were unfortunately a tad chewy. I would still recommend heavily regardless of some chewy duck pieces as the sauce makes the dish and the duck was still good enough. The other person had the Half Chicken for $38 with Bell & Evans chicken, ginger apricot sauce, barberries, almonds, and glazed orange peels. By comparison, the portion size was a lot smaller but the piece I tried was tender and the sauce had a good sourness and sweetness to it. This was solid though I heavily preferred mine as expected. Having already spent a lot, we didn't bother with dessert though the ice cream sandwich was mad tempting (even at $16.) As someone who loves Persian food, I find this restaurant to be one of the few Persian spots which is a bit difficult to rate. The quality of the food was excellent and better than virtually all Persian spots at least in NYC with the closest being Nasrin's, but this spot eclipses it. In terms of traditional Persian food, this is easily the closest to the outstanding spots in Ridgewood (New Jersey not Queens) but you're paying a lot for that quality. In short, if you don't mind the price point, the food here is really tasty but if you want to pay similar prices and have more unique options that justify the price point more, I would recommend Eyval instead which also has better rice and a unique better version of kashke bademjan. Mid upper 4 for the quality, upper 3 for the price point. 4.3.

My wife and I have a 5 month old baby. Would it be possible to bring a stroller with us or would it be best to leave it home?

It's best to leave her home. This is not a kid friendly restaurant & there is no space for strollers, car seat or anything else in between. There isn't much space between tables.

What's the outdoor seating situation?

The have outdoor seating in front and in the back! Honestly the back patio is beautiful!

Is the meat halal?

No, it's not halal

I also had multiple chums from Brooklyn endorsing this spot, so everything seemed to be lining up for an excellent night. Unfortunately, I'm starting to think you just can't go to places like this on a Tuesday, but maybe it was just a bad night. I got here way before my chum due to our work schedules, literally 45 minutes or so. It wasn't 6pm yet and while there were definitely customers in both the bar area and the backyard outdoor section, it was pretty chill. I was able to secure a small table next to the bar right by the open window in the front (probably because the sun was glaring down on it, which wasn't an issue 10 minutes later) and just chilled out for a while, enjoying the excellent warm weather. This was the highlight of the experience, which unfortunately my chum did not get to enjoy. A lot of this was just unfortunate timing, I think. As I was waiting for my chum, people were practically streaming into the bar, probably about 25 or so, which I watched with increasing trepidation. Pretty much all of them wanted a drink, and there was only one bartender. They did not fix that problem until well into my chum's visit, so there was literally just the one guy making a gazillion drinks for about 45 minutes. Just no reason for that at all, especially given that they DID have the resources to divert and had a young woman back there at a certain point. But once I saw how crazy it was getting, I tried to pre-emptively order a second round, which he forgot about and had to ultimately be reminded of. It took literally half an hour to get the second drink. When my chum arrived, she went up to the bar to order her own drink and some of the arancini. She came back 10 minutes later and said she wasn't given the opportunity - THAT is completely insane. If you're so swamped that customers have to wait that long to even order much less get their drinks, you need help. Not clear where the disconnect was, but what started out as a great experience pretty much crash landed. Really disappointing. The crowd did thin out ultimately but the damage had been done. We were able to get the drinks but didn't bother with the additional app because we didn't want to risk missing a big chunk of the Nets game. So by not being even remotely attentive for a significant period of time, they left money on the table. I will say that the bartender himself maintained his professionalism throughout, and just kept making the drinks. Pretty much the opposite of what would have happened on Bar Rescue. This was on management, not the bartender. The drinks WERE good, which also made the service problems a shame. I got the Witch Doctor, which featured bourbon, rosemary, maple and lemon. Really well made, and appropriate for the unseasonably warm evening - it's the kind of bourbon cocktail made for summer. Would absolutely get that again. And the food was very solid. The star of the night was the arancini, which were featured prominently on the apps menu right at the time and promoted as one of their big selling points - deservedly so. These were honestly some of the best rice balls I've had. The cheese in the middle emphasized the flavors and wasn't too dense or overwhelming, the balls were cooked perfectly, and the sauce (the underrated part of rice balls for me) was delicious. Huge recommend. I also got a margarita flatbread to share with my chum, and that was good as well. Everything was going to come up short to the arancini, but it hit the spot. As mentioned, this was a random Tuesday night when maybe they don't have their full crew ready to rock. Maybe it was a fluke crowd surge? I just don't know, but the bottom line was that they weren't prepared for the customers who came in and were already there, and that's a big problem. If you can't deliver the same quality that you do on the weekends and predictably busier times, then you shouldn't be open that early in the week. Hopefully they figure it out because there's a lot to like here.

Few have been able to replicate the experience, but Honeycomb Hi Fi Lounge comes close. That the space is narrow with just a few seats along the bar and a few tables mimics the Japanese experience best, where you can almost have it so the whole room is having one conversation together. The music is the focus. The cocktail menu is rather simple, and my Stormbringer drink, with dark rum and ginger beer was not anything to write home about, but $15 is pretty low for cocktails these days so I'll take it. My friend and I each order a cocktail, and are catching up. I'm from Brooklyn, however I no longer live here, and this was precious catch-up time with my friend. Then I get interrupted mid-sentence by the old-timer DJ from his low seat in a corner behind the bar. I had bumped the bar with my wrist (bumped my wrist watch as well, not deliberately) and then placed my hand down (granted- more than placed but definitely not slammed), and he decided to warn me that I COULD HAVE made his record skip. It was the Eagles or Santana (far from eclectic, but that's just me). I'm also 99% certain he turned the volume up afterwards, making it even harder to enjoy the company. After that interaction, I struggled to pick it back up with my friend, because I found that distraction very effing rude. When this "4th wall" gets broken down with service, it is hard to then enjoy the space in an uninhibited state. I am all for the Tokyo Vinyl Bar vibe, and I'm also for also giving talent an outlet to share their collection, but this interaction colored my experience, and I closed out after one drink and went elsewhere. I mentioned this to the bartender, and he was kind to offer a buy-back of a rare whiskey, which I did accept. 5 stars for the bartender, but 1 for my experience. I don't like to be harsh or unnecessarily cruel, but this is what it is. I have visited in the past and enjoyed myself. Nonetheless, I certainly won't be coming back.

They serve oysters, which adds to that aphrodisiac experience of the oh so 'wow this is a former brothel!'. The bartenders and servers were fast and very sociable with the more sociable customers. The immediate entrance is very tight, and it was uncomfortable navigating the space. We expected there'd be more seating in the back, which there was, but it was limited and not offered to us until we asked for it.
