Stopped by Comptoir for some of Will's famous chicken and it was just as delicious as everyone says it is. We also ordered the gildas, caesar salad, and caviar service. The gildas was super yummy - highly recommend if you're a savory girl like myself. Their salads are always incredible the caesar is no different. The dressing is always so flavorful and it's a generous serving size. The caviar wasn't the best I've ever had but still very good. Loved the presentation of the potato chips in the upcycled tin, too. The vibes in here are just so cozy and lovely. Le Comptoir du vin has been on my to try list and it finally happened! We came here with a reservation at the bottle shop- where you get to pick out your wine before dining! They have a nice selection or everything from sparkling to red, and we selected a white and a red for dinner. All of their wines are natural so you know you're getting something great. We started with the sourdough bread, Gilda and chicken liver pate. That may have been the best pate I've ever had, paired with the red wine shallots was legendary. For supper we went with the braised duck leg. Everything was cooked perfectly, the presentation was beautiful, and they perfectly timed it for us so that we had a nice meal throughout the night. The service was amazing- everyone was so nice, and sitting at the bar we were able to watch and talk with the chef. The restaurant is cozy, I would recommend a reservation. We ordered an anchovy appetizer, which truly met expectation. We ordered the fish dish and the chicken with mushrooms. My single biggest issue was portion size and specifically for the chicken. I've been two Le Comptoir a couple of times and have never been disappointed! Upon walking in, the upstairs dining area is small but cute and homey with an open view to the kitchen in the back. Downstairs they have an incredible back bar patio area and dining and it is one of my favorite places to sit, especially when the weather is nice. The most recent time I came here, I shared a number of plates with my friends and everything was great! Their menu is frequently changing but the octopus and short rib that I had were fantastic! This is the first restaurant I've been to in Baltimore that reminds me of the fun little places wedged into small spaces in the East Village. It has crazy amounts of atmosphere, is intimate, and really sets the mood for a great experience. The main dining room is downstairs and through a small maze of hallways with arrows on them to lead the way. It eventually opens up into a truly unique space with about 8 tables, and a gorgeous cement courtyard. We went here for date night, thinking we'd have some good wine, fun atmosphere, and slightly weird French food. We were so wrong. This place is phenomenal. The food blew us away. Every course was unexpected. The sourdough bread, with homemade butter, the quail eggs with raw garlic aioli, the beet and greens tower - all magnificent and so much tastier than I thought they would be. The star of the show, however, was the pork and apricot terrine - I couldn't tell you exactly what was in it and I'm sure I don't want to know, but we almost kicked the plate. What a little gem of a place in Baltimore! I went with a friend and luckily got a walk-in table on a Tuesday night. It's a cozy spot and you can buy any of the wines on the displayed as well as pickled things. My friend got a non-alcoholic drink that she said was refreshing and yummy. I got the orange and pink wine and I liked both okay, I didn't love either but it was fun to try! We ordered the sardine and olive and pickled pepper on a skewer and that was a flavor bomb! The pate with rye crackers was creamy and literal perfection. We also got the endive salad which was nice but there was too much cheese and that made it too heavy. The ricotta on sourdough was really lovely but I needed salt and pepper - it was too bland otherwise. Finally, we ended on the olive oil cake which was so close to perfect but the crème fraiche on top wasn't doing it for me. The food is a mix of tapas, American and European flair. Last time I went I got their Haggis - such a unique menu item and while I'm not a fan of offal it was probably a great rendition of the dish. My favorites at Le Comptoir du Vin is their house salad which comes with the best sheep cheese and crumbled croutons. This time we ordered their fish and pork dish. My favorite was the fish dish - it was vibrant and salty. The staff is so knowledgeable about their menu - it's impressive bc they change it out often! I miss their hand soap on a stick in their bathrooms - something I'm used to having in South America but they've gotten rid of it since. There's several areas you can sit, upstairs where they have the wine store, the small bar and then the downstairs and outdoor patio. I've been to Le Comptoir du Vin for dinner twice since they reopened for dinner service a few months ago (after pivoting during the pandemic to more of a sandwich/takeaway shop). I've loved every bite I've ordered: chicken liver pate with red wine shallots, escarole/frisee salad with secret de compostelle cheese and anchovy dressing, duck rillettes with pickled prunes, pissaladiere (anchovy and onion tart with olives), littleneck claims and monkfish with lentils, chicken and wild garlic pie, poached ox tongue al dragoncello with dandelion greens, banana cream pie,... The menu is posted daily, and everything I've had has been excellent. The wine is also great. Le Comptoir du Vin is also a bottle shop/natural wine bar. I've stuck to wine when I've visited (because they have such great, interesting, varied options - some by the glass/more by the bottle), but they also have cocktails and beers! The wine I've had with dinner the last two visits was a Spanish orange wine - Azimut Brisat. The service is great. It feels like everyone who is a part of Le Comptoir du Vin loves food and wine and being a part of Le Comptoir du Vin. There's a small front room and then a sort of hidden patio area (which can be closed off with garage doors if the weather is so-so). They take reservations only if your party is 4-6 (by email; find details on their website). I've always been one of a party of 2, so I like to get there a few minutes before they open and wait outside for staff to open the door. (They are currently open for dinner Wednesday through Saturday at 5:30pm). It's possible to get there later and get a table, but I like a guarantee that I'll be eating their delicious food soon - so getting there before they even open the doors works for me! Is it possible to fall in love with a restaurant!?!? I think it is and I think I did! Someone told me to come here, was it a friend was it my Bon Appetit Magazine!? We might never know. But who ever did, I am forever grateful. The place opens at 5:30, no reservations unless it's a large party. I'm a large party of one. And I ain't mad about it. I like food experiences and am always willing to travel and to pay for them. When I arrived I was a few minutes early and a couple behind. I was third. The doors were opened at precisely 5:30. I was able to snag one of the two seats at the tiny bar. I immediately loved the rustic and home feel to the restaurant. By 5:45 Jeff a wine rep was pouring me samples and taking the other seat next to me. An obvious regular and super fan. I wanted everything on the menu but I would narrow down my choices to "braised leeks, Stilton and anchovies" , "grilled scallop with Montpelier butter + puree" and cocktail is "Harvest Moon" - mezcal, Campari, turmeric syrup + lemon. I had some out of body experiences during this meal, maybe I saw some divine light, all the things. It's almost like the first bite of my toast completely silenced the chatter of a completely full restaurant and all I could hear was my enjoyment of the first bite. The braised leeks were perfect and with that strong blue and the saltiness of the fish, it could not be more perfect. The scallop was the most perfectly cooked scallop I've ever had. I could not be happier. It was served on a little shell. The presentation brought a little bit of whimsy to my solo date. My drink was the mixture sweet and smoky and that I look for. As I was talking to my bartender/waitress I mentioned that I was headed to a show later at "Holy Frijoles" only for her response to be that she would be headlining that same show with her band. What are the odds! Heather quickly became a new buddy! I could not recommend this more but by the looks of it, recommendations are not even needed, if anything I'm sure Baltimore would like to keep this as their secret French food heaven all to themselves! It's sort of pricey, yet if you pair the weekly specials just right and share, along with wine and one dessert--a dinner for two can come to just $75. The food is great, sometimes rich. Two quibbles: Choosing a wine to suit your taste can be a challenge but you can get a taste before choosing. Slowly eating my way through Baltimore and I finally came to the restaurant where it was listed one of the best and new of 2019 according to Bon Appetit magazine. There was a 30-40 minute wait and we didn't have a reservation so luckily there was a cute bar outback to have a cocktail while we waited. I love the vibe this restaurant was giving but there were only limited tables for dining. There were mini 4-5 tables upstairs and probably 5-6 downstairs. The bartender downstairs was super friendly and we loved what she recommended to us. We were seated upstairs and was allowed to bring our drinks with us. Sour dough bread w/ Normandy butter - amazing. Noted that the butter was the best part of the whole meal Cullen skink - the name made me think of a medical term the whole time but actually a Scottish gosh soup. Very creamy and hearty. Lamb heart steaks w/ mash - not sure if it was lamb or a diff animal. Flavor was good but it came out luke warm. Nestled away in a grungy block of Station North, Le Comptoir du Vin offers small plate French excellence and carefully crafted cocktails. Their menu changes daily. Reservations are only for parties of 4 or larger, and expect it to fill up quickly after opening for walk-ins. If you don't manage to snag a table right away, their backyard bar/patio is a super cute place to wait. Service was impeccable. Menu highlights from our trip included a blood cake, a savory, almost brownie-like blood pudding, and the octopus sandwich, which was so delicious and unique and turned what would otherwise have been a standard "this food was really good but I'm still a little hungry because it's a gourmet small plates French place meal" into a genuinely filling experience. The few times I've been to Le Comptoir du Vin have all been wonderful. I reserve trips to Comptoir's wood panelled intimate Station North location for dates and special occasions, and it consistently lives up to my expectations. It is my favorite kind of gourmet dining, that which surprises you with being delicious but without being too pretentious. On my most recent visit, my partner and I ordered vegetarian, opting for their house sourdough, St Marcellin cheese, persimmon salad, celery salad, and french lentils, with a bottle of french red to accompany and a fruit tart with two espressos for dessert. For this food, everything was delicious and creative with no doubt, but I would definitely recommend the salads and lentils over the cheese and bread. If you are at somewhere this interesting for dinner it pays to be adventurous! Also the sourdough comes with two pieces but the cheese also comes with bread so best not to get both. The persimmon salad had mascarpone, mint and dukkah, which was so interesting and successful as a flavor combination! And the celery salad, which doesn't sound too exciting, was actually surprisingly good, with its pistachio, dates & colatura topping. The ambiance is dim, romantic, with menus handwritten on chalk boards, and a great selection of natural wines from around the world. The service is prompt, familiar, and welcoming and made the experience even more enjoyable than it would've otherwise been. Given the small space and popularity, reservations are a must. All was cooked and seasoned so perfectly. I was truly blown away. it's a small place and the "bar seating" gives you a great video of the tiny kitchen area where the magic happens. I was in town for a conference and my colleague asked me to accompany her to her in-laws restaurant which happened to be Le Comptoir du Vin. I was hesitant at first as I'm not big on French cuisine. The restaurant was hard to find somewhat as there was no sign but I quickly spotted it after my Uber driver took the turn. The space is super quaint and the aesthetics is oh so pleasing! The lambent lighting was a great touch as it added to the dining experience. I got the scallops and a glass of wine (sweetest one they had). This place is housed in the old Bottega spot(next to the Tattoo parlor). Sometimes you want 6 of your good good girlfriends to have dinner with. Now back to this delicious food. I was completely and I mean completely blown away with all the deliciousness. I started with a Negroni cocktail, which was the best, adding this place to my list for awesome cocktails. I kept it pretty simple with the bavette steak dish with burrata and rapini on a crostino and drizzled with salmoriglio sauce. The steak as so tender and melted in my mouth with the burrata and some of that delicious rapini. If was to be sentenced to prison, this would be my last meal. Just so delicious. I normally do not order dessert, but I was tempted to try and I am glad I did. The pound cake with crème frache, honey comb with black sesame seeds. So darn tasty. We drove from Philly to meet friends for a celebratory meal here. They had enjoyed the quirky menu and beautiful food some years ago. We checked the menu ahead of our visit, knowing it is limited, and being aware of the cancellation policy. Our meal on Saturday was a big disappointment, mainly because at our 6:30 reservation we learned there were only two items on the menu that passed as entrees- a chicken breast and Romano beans with a fried egg. Pork and haddock listed on line were no longer available. Our server, who was very attentive throughout the evening, told us the restaurant was headed for vacation and fish isn't delivered on Saturday. So at the direction of our server, who suggested we enjoy the dishes "family style", our table of four ordered one of each item and shared everything. We brought our own champagne and purchased a bottle of Tempranillo there. Bread is a component in several of the menu items, with no gluten-free option. We had several in our party who don't eat bread or gluten so we brought our own gf crackers. The roasted garlic, paté, terrine, and sardines were perfect, as was the unique ceasar-like salad. Portions were very modest. The beans/egg and the chicken/zucchini were unremarkable. The clincher was dessert- the "poached peaches " was one half of a peach in a tiny bowl with a couple tablespoons of what looked like creme anglais. There is an unspoken contract between a restaurant and diner, and so many aspects of this were breached. When you eat family style, that means you serve portions generous enough to share. If you encourage tapas style dining, then provide variety. If you have a limited menu and expect your diners to trust the chef to decide what is best for the meal, offering only roast chicken for dinner is stingy. read more

Reminds me of some of the small random places you walk up to in NYC that end up being good. If you're a more plant-based-diet person, options are very limited but everything we've tried has been good. There will be butter, maybe too much for some tastes. I liked their casual approach with the wines and and willingness to figure out what you'll really enjoy. Desserts were simple but still a delicious highlight. Very fresh and not overly sweet. Down-sides (probably not enough to keep me from trying again) I think it could be cleaned better (differently?) inside - when we came in, there was a bleach smell around the tables rather than a pleasant or neutral scent before dinner. The menu changes pretty much every day, which is good for fresh ingredients but tough for dietary restrictions or planning on having a favorite dish. They are pretty strict with the reservations and seating system, but when you reserve, you're taking a gamble on the menu and they're not super flexible with that. And while it might seem like a date-night spot, there's way too much garlic for a date :/ Bring a friend and some mints. Wine glass and pour are small for $16+. The menu is written on a wall that you can't see while sitting at the tables. The price point is high for this area and the nature of the dishes, despite the good quality -- I think we landed at over $100 per person with drinks, dessert -- something to keep in mind. This place was really quite charming and we had a lovely experience overall. Here's a breakdown of our meal: Homemade sourdough - I'm more than happy to pay for quality, and the bread and butter was quite good, but I did think $8 was a tad bit steep for 2 thick half slices of bread. Not to mention that the attempt at char may have gone slightly too far on one of the pieces. I was also surprised that the radish was grated daikon versus a different variety but perhaps it came down to season. Overall, yummy yet overpriced. Persimmon - I'm so happy we opted for this over others as this was hands down the winning dish of the evening. The subtly sweet persimmon, combined with the tangy mascarpone, topped with spicy, nutty dukkah. Drool. The combination of flavors and textures was just perfect. Scallops - The dish was beautiful and the scallops were perfectly cooked. But sadly, I found it to be overly salty to the point of being unable to finish the dish. I'm assuming it was the anchovy vin, but there were also small, crunchy, super salty bits scattered everywhere that was impossible to avoid. Then the extra bitter pink radicchio only further enhanced that it was a miss. Gnocchi - The gnocchi was very fluffy and clearly made with care. And when covered in the gooey raclette made this a very rich dish. Chocolate nemesis - Their flourless chocolate cake was very good. Admittedly I only had a couple of bites from being very full but you could taste the quality of the chocolate used in the dish. The food here was amazing and the food prices are EXTREMELY reasonable when you consider that the restaurant seats less than 30 people, is only open 4.5 hrs a night and cooks unique, delicious dishes. We had- FRENCH QUAIL W/ POLENTA + BAGNA CAUDA: Easily my favorite meal, not only in this restaurant but in recent memory. If it is on the menu when you go then you don't have a choice. At $28 it was the highest priced item on the menu and I would've gladly paid $12 more dollars for it. UVOU RAVIOLO w/ ROSEMARY HAM, BROWN BUTTER + CHIVES: I'm going to be honest, I only had one bite of this because it wasn't mine but it was very tasty. $18 CHICKEN LIVER PÂTÉ w/ RED WINE SHALLOTS: I do not like liver at all but I was told that I had to try this, so I did. I probably wouldn't order it again because it still had the consistency of liver that I couldn't really get over but the taste was excellent! If you like liver then I imagine you'd probably love this. Served with their amazing bread. $14 SAINT MARCELLIN w/ GARLIC CHIVES + SOURDOUGH: Not to over simplify the dish but it's basically the cheese version of the pâté, also served with bread. $12 HOUSE SOURDOUGH w/ NORMANDY BUTTER: I actually had this for dessert even though it's an appetizer. It is the same bread that comes with the liver pâté and the saint marcellin. When I first tasted the bread with the liver I wasn't crazy about it because it had that charred taste to it but after a few bites and then a few more with the saint marcellin I became obsessed with it which is why I ordered it as dessert. $8 So to recap: Don't expect a full bar. Don't complain about it. Get the Quail, get the bread, branch off however you'd like from there. read more

After seeing Le Comptoir du Vin being recognized as one of top 10 US restaurants by Bon Appetit I couldn't wait to visit. Luckily my honey surprised me with a birthday dinner here and it was magnificent. There is no overhype to this place, every item we ordered was sensational. The winner was the chicken pate. I've never had something quite so decadent with a wonderful smooth texture. The bread slightly charred and buttered served as the perfect vessel for the pate. We also ordered the mussels and ham raviolo for entrees, the latter being surprisingly light and tasty. To top it all of we had a the chocolate dessert which was rich but not too rich. On very few occasions have I felt compelled to give a restaurant more than 5 stars but this place is one of them. I can't wait to come back if just for the chicken pate! read more

Charming, cozy, small, double doored(keeps the cold out), hard to see menu written on a mirror and chalkboard (feel free to just ask what they have), efficient! Made a reservation a month in advance and must say I was not disappointed after the wait. How this place can operate with the prices they're charging for the atmosphere and small turnover in tables (small area, seemed like people suck around) is beyond me - but I'm not complaining. We had 4 appetizers, 2 entrees, dessert, 2 alcoholic beverages and was stuck with a $100 bill - seriously not bad given the atmosphere and offerings. Drippings toast was delightfully meaty, rich, on a soaked yet still structurally sound and crunchy thick cut of country toast. The celery salad? I don't know, just try it. Delicious, simple in principle but complex and almost meaty in flavor. They captured something pretty interesting with one of the least interesting ingredients I can think of: celery. The lentil curry was perfect. The flat bread, the cream dollop, spices, everything meddled together perfectly. Absolutely our favorite dish. They are churning out magnificent food in a tight space with incredible flavors. Definitely deserved it's early recognition as a top ten newly opened restaurant. I came to try this place out and they were not letting anybody in the bar area, although I can't remember why now, I think maybe they were short staffed. I came a second time to try it out and there was a problem with the gas line apparently and they were closed. Ok, twice I came here to check it out and twice denied. The third time, on a Wednesday night, they said no walk-ins tonight and we were on three strikes and you're out! For a restaurant that does not say it is reservations only and has a bar, to deny patrons three times in a row is ridiculous. I would not normally write a review without actually going to a place, and I understand unexpected things happen, but the odds of this happening three times in a row by luck is practically zero. This is obviously their normal way of doing things. A lack of reliability is enough reason not to go there, as it likely translates into their food and service too. If you do go, be sure to make reservations. I hope they are more reliable with those then they are for their other customers. read more
