My girlfriend and I enjoyed a lovely evening filled with good food, cocktails, and music. I really wanted to love this place, especially with all the hype I've seen on Instagram, but after my visit, I'm not quite sure what all the excitement is about. I arrived before my girlfriend and waited at the bar. The bartenders, both gentlemen, were friendly, engaging, and professional, which made for a pleasant start to the evening. While waiting, I ordered a ginger wine, one of my favorite wines ever. I was actually surprised to see it behind the bar, but unfortunately, it was a disappointment. The wine tasted flat and lacked the bold, spicy body that a good ginger wine should have. It gave the impression that it had been sitting for quite some time. I ended up asking the bartender to add something to improve the flavor, which helped just a bit, but it still wasn't what I expected. Once my girlfriend arrived, we were escorted to our table. Since we had made a reservation in advance, I expected better seating. The restaurant is relatively small and wasn't completely full, yet we were placed at a table against a wall with an opening directly behind our chairs where people were constantly walking past. With booths and other seating available, it felt like a missed opportunity for a more comfortable dining experience. Our server, however, was excellent. He was friendly, attentive, professional, and genuinely added to the overall experience. My girlfriend ordered the Palm Tree Punch, which she thoroughly enjoyed, while I remained stuck with my less than impressive ginger wine. To start, we ordered the combination appetizer platter, which included three spring rolls, three chicken wings, three Bangkok shrimp, and calamari. Overall, it was a good appetizer. The Bangkok shrimp were enormous, although the texture didn't quite resemble shrimp. I still enjoyed them and finished every bite. The entire platter was flavorful and a nice way to sample several items on the menu. For our entrées, my girlfriend ordered the Mongolian Beef, while I chose the medium cooked skirt steak with a side of Vegetable Pad Kee Mao. The Mongolian Beef and the Pad Kee Mao were both delicious and full of flavor. The Palm Tree Punch also delivered. The skirt steak was just okay. Considering this is marketed as a steakhouse, I expected much more. It simply didn't live up to "a steakhouse" reputation. My girlfriend ordered a fudge cake that was more fudge than cake, but it was okay. I wanted to try the Hennessy cake but they had none. The evening took a turn after we left the restaurant. On the way home, my stomach began cramping, and by the time I got home, I wasn't feeling well at all. The ginger wine stood out as the most likely culprit since it was the only thing I consumed that my girlfriend did not, and we shared all of the same food. Given how flat and off the ginger wine tasted, it certainly left me wondering if it had been sitting for too long. Would I return? Possibly, but mainly for the cocktails (no wine), appetizers, and the lively atmosphere. Overall, this restaurant has a beautiful atmosphere, great music, and outstanding service. The staff truly made us feel welcome, and the ambiance is definitely one of its strongest qualities. However, I do think the restaurant is overpriced for what it offers. I've dined at several more upscale restaurants where both the quality of the food and the overall experience better justified the price. When the food truly exceeds expectations, the cost becomes an afterthought. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case here. I do believe this place has much more potential. They just need some tweaking. Yesterday, my daughter treated me and her sister to dinner at La Chai Restaurant on Utica Ave to celebrate our birthdays. The ambiance of the restaurant was beautiful clean, welcoming, and we were seated quickly. Our waiter was pleasant at first, which made us excited for the evening and hopeful for a great experience. We started with the platter combination along with two frozen rum punches and a lychee lemonade. Unfortunately, the drinks were disappointing from the start. The rum punches were not frozen as requested, and when I brought it to the waiter's attention, he appeared unaware and stated that the machine "must not be cold as yet." What was disappointing was the lack of communication. Had we been informed beforehand, we could have simply ordered another drink. The platter combination also missed the mark. Everything tasted overcooked, and the wings seemed overly refried, making them hard and unpleasant to eat. For our main courses, I ordered the Thai shrimp fried rice, my younger daughter ordered the Singapore noodles with chicken, and my other had the chicken and broccoli. Sadly, the food quality did not match the beautiful atmosphere of the establishment. My fried rice had such a strong egg smell that I could not eat it at all. The Singapore noodles and chicken with broccoli were served warm instead of hot and fresh. What made this more disappointing was that this dinner was meant to be a special birthday celebration with my daughters. La Chai has the appearance and atmosphere of a restaurant with high standards, but the food quality, temperature, and attention to detail did not reflect that standard during our visit. We visited Le Chai on a weeknight, and it was a really nice experience! The restaurant is very chic, beautifully decorated with dim lighting. It gives a lounge vibe. They also played a lot of great music, and they even got a DJ later on in the night as well. They played a lot of reggae, soca, and reggaeton music. The food is mainly Thai fusion, and everything we ordered was delicious! I got the Singapore noodles with beef. It was very flavorful. We also ordered the Mongolian beef, which was very tender and delicious. We also ordered shrimp dumplings to share. They were more like shrimp shumai, but they were good as well. Their drinks pack a punch, but they taste great! I got the Tropical Sunset, which was very sweet and refreshing. Service was quick and attentive. This was my first time here and honestly I was very pleased for the most part with just minor issues. The service was great. Our waiter Alex was very attentive and pleasant. Initially it looked pale and I was skeptical because I asked that they make it well done, and I was also expecting a darker sauce. But when I tasted it, it was really good. The appetizers were all good and the sauces were good, except the calamari. The calamari was very disappointing. They were big and looked like onion rings lol. They also were too chewy and had a cheese-like pull of a mozzarella stick. We were not pleased. We brought it to their attention and sent it back, but it wasn't even comp it off of the bill. Celebrated a friend's birthday here and it was an amazing time! This is actually my 2nd time here, not sure how or why I didn't review it before. The ambiance in here is beautiful! Love the decor and the dim lighting. I especially love the decoration behind the bar. It's great for a date night or any special occasion celebration. This is a pretty and cozy space. It feels intimate with the dim lights, music is perfect. They played old school reggae jams when I went for dinner. My friend and I both had the Thai basil fried rice and an appetizer. The calamari was nice and flavorful! Our drinks were good as well. Alex was our server, he was attentive and kind. The ambiance was really nice, very beautiful decor in there, the service was great, the bartender was the most attentive and really gave personalized service, he spoke with us about our preferences and made custom drinks and brought them out to our table. The drinks were great, well prepared. The food was really good. We had the appetizer sampler and it was good but the must have on there was the calamari 10/10. I had that Mongolian beef and that was delicious as well. I want to come back on Thursday for their martini night and brunch if they offer it. Definitely a must try. However, my experience was a bit of a mixed bag. First, the menu was not very extensive, and it took me a while to decide on what to order. Some menu items seemed overpriced. For instance, salmon was listed at $50, and crab legs were around $150. I'm fine with splurging for great food, but those prices felt excessive, especially for dishes like salmon, which is generally inexpensive. I ordered the drunken pasta, which was delicious but incredibly spicy, even though I had asked for medium spice. It could definitely use a bit of balance. My wife ordered the lamb chops, and we specifically asked if it would come with the green sauce. The waiter confirmed it would, but when the dish arrived, there was no sauce. To run out at 7:00 pm is kinda crazy. The waiter said he'd check on it, but it took him 20 minutes to return, by which time my wife had to escalate the issue to the manager. To their credit, the manager handled the situation well. They eventually made the sauce, offered to reheat the lamb chops, and gave us a discount for the inconvenience. By that point, though, we were ready to head home to celebrate New Year's Eve with our kids. Overall, the ambiance and food were enjoyable, but the service and pricing had some hiccups. I never said anything about the entree because I was full once I ate half of the rice and figured since I didn't really like it I may have felt the same way about the entree. When we ordered our dessert, it happened again but to my friend. We all ordered our cake, they brought the sparklers, but the server barely sang and clearly wasn't too enthusiastic about it. We saw others celebrating their birthday with different servers and they were much more into it. Back to the cake, myself and the birthday person were eating and I noticed my friend didn't get her cake. I summoned over the sever as she walked by and she said she didn't hear my friend's order-- what? She came up to each of us just like with the entree so it made no sense. A Complicated Experience at Le Chai I have a complicated relationship with the experience I had today at Le Chai in Brooklyn. We stumbled upon this Thai restaurant while walking through a neighborhood where people actually greet you--Southern hospitality vibes in NYC? Yes, please. That warm energy followed us into the restaurant, where a security guard outside greeted us kindly and the host sat us with grace and urgency. The space is stunning. I had to ask if it was Black-owned--and sure enough, it is. You could feel it in the intentional design, the warmth of the environment, and the overall vibe. We showed up in beach bum outfits, and still felt welcomed and at home. Meanwhile, the other diners were dolled up, and it felt like a whole scene. We started with the vegetable spring rolls--nice crunch, solid flavor. I ordered an espresso martini. Not my favorite, but it wasn't bad either. Here's where it gets tricky: for a Thai restaurant, there were some noticeable things missing--no Thai iced tea, Thai coffee, lychee drinks, or even a creative fusion cocktail to nod to Thai flavors. That absence stood out. We ordered the curry and pad Thai, expecting the flavors to match the elegance of the space. No peanut sauce, no limes (limes instead of lemons for pad Thai), and coconut milk in their curry. Unfortunately, they didn't quite hit the mark. As my friend put it: "there is spectacle but no substance"--only regarding the food. I genuinely believe Le Chai has heart and potential. The intention is there, and the atmosphere is already next level. But when you're charging $20+ for dishes I can get at other spots for $12.95 (with more authentic flavor), it's hard not to walk away a little disappointed. It's also unfortunate that there is a missed opportunity in blending black/AA flavors with Taiwanese flavors. Again, slight disappointment. That said--I want to see this place win. My expertise this restaurant was horrible. We went there thinking we were going to have some good food, but was told we could only have the appetizer which would end at 4:00 pm. After complaining to the manager she still couldn't explain what we were getting for $60 each , only drinks with two coins, which I had a fruit punch which I did not touch. After that I was so turned off. They brought out two appetizer which was a tiny boat container, clearly which was nowhere worth $120. Also gave us two t- shirts which we left in the table. I literally asked him for it 4 times, and watched others who arrived after us and ordered after us get theirs, eat, and leave. I even asked him to pack it to go. I'm not sure why he couldn't read the room. Our son was getting antsy as it was getting late and we had him cornered in a both because they didn't provide a high chair. You can tell a lot of thought went into creating the vibe, and it definitely delivers on ambiance. This spot has been on my list for a while, so I was hoping the mixed reviews weren't true... but unfortunately, they were. The food just didn't live up to the setting. The apps were okay, and my sweet & sour chicken was fine, but nothing memorable. My friends ordered the beef & broccoli and shrimp & broccoli which are both classic dishes, but neither could get through more than a few bites. Pretty disappointing, especially considering the upscale vibe and pricing. The silver lining was our server, who was super attentive and made sure we were well taken care of all night. Extremely disappointing Valentine's Day experience. My date and I sat for nearly two hours and our food never came. We eventually had to leave and just pay for our drinks. Communication was poor, and no real explanation or effort was made to fix it. Valentine's Day is one of the biggest nights of the year for restaurants, so there's really no excuse for being this unprepared--especially while charging $145 per person for a prix fixe menu. This was one of the most uncomfortable dining experiences I've ever had. Our group of 10 was told we had to pay for our entire meal before we could be seated or eat--something they claimed was a "new policy" for large parties. I've been to plenty of restaurants with big groups and have never been asked to pay upfront. Although the staff was hospitable and polite, the policy itself felt discriminatory. We are a Black group, and it's hard not to feel like we were being profiled or treated with suspicion. On top of that, we were overcharged. They added an "administration fee" we were never told about, plus double gratuity--20% and then an additional 10% on top of that. That's not a service charge, that feels like stealing. Restaurants should never make customers feel unwelcome or criminalized just for showing up to eat. This experience left a bad taste in my mouth, and not from the food--because after all that, we barely wanted to stay. read more

Enjoyed dinner at Le Chai last night. Started with the combo and a rum punch, main course the skirt steak and the egg fried rice. Desert was the apple crumble cheesecake. My sister in law had the ribeye steak in addition with a frozen lychee colada. We were seated immediately with our reservation. It is important ghat you make a reservation. I was disappointed in our seating since I did make the reservation a few weeks ahead and expected a better location. The waitress was so attentive and helpful. She was worth every penny of the included tip. Yes the tip was automatically included with the bill. This is a good place for a girls dinner or a date night. With dim lighting and good music. Two thumbs up for this experience. read more

This place is trash honestly waiters have a horrible attitude. I went for Valentine's Day and the wait alone to order food was an hour. The wait to have food delivered was about two hours. I am truly disgusted with black owned establishment. On top of that the owner is just walking around like he's high and mighty. Le Chai is an Upscale Asian fusion Restaurant on Utica Avenue. The outside signage is lovely and the inside decor was well thought out. It has great ambiance for a celebration or just wanting to sit and have a nice dinner. Food: we started with an appetizer platter which comes with wings, spring rolls, fried shrimp and calamari. (The wings and spring rolls were a hit for my palate, however the calamari and shrimp was not. The shrimp was under seasoned and although the calamari was fried well it lacked flavor as well) We tried the drunken noodles with chicken and the spicy thai basil shrimp. I ordered a side of rice to complete my shrimp dish. The thai shrimp was cooked to perfection, beautiful textures, fresh crisp veggies and lovely sauce..however once again the shrimp lacked seasoning. The drunken noodles was a fan favorite..cooked well sauced and flavorful. We finished our meals with some coconut ice cream and the weekly cheesecake special which was a hennnesy cheesecake...both desserts hit the spot. Overall I would give it another try. I can tell they are still working out the kinks of the newly opening and from what i was told this is a soft launch. One recommendation i have is to revamp the menu to include what are in the dishes. With patrons having many allergies it is helpful and please list all your sides. To have a short list of options that doesn't include standard white rice for a thai/asian resturant preplexed me. read more

Pleasantly surprised. Dinner with friends on a Friday night. Ordered a couple of appetizers and drinks before our main course. They we quite good. Our main dishes from the noodles selections were quite large, could be shared as we had to take home doggie bags Ambiance very nice just need to finish up on some of the cosmetics. Our waitress was friendly. I think she was stretched a little thin in my opinion. Great customer service, very attentive. We were checked on a couple of times to make sure we were okay. Parking might be an issue. Also, make reservations. I did in OpenTable, so no waiting on line. All in all, I recommend and will definitely come back. read more
