Love this local gem! Great cocktails and food menu is very good as well with plenty of delicious options ranging from lighted appetizers and salads to a full entree if you're hungry. For example, I once asked for a cherry flavored Stoli and the bartender told me they did not have it even though I saw three bottles on the shelves behind her. I used to frequent Anyway Cafe (2nd Ave location) for years and have always loved it. I've always wanted to try this location and lucky did last night with a group of friends. The vibe: fantastic. Anyway cafe and bar is such a convenient location! It is right at the corner of neck road train station. As I walked in, I realized a live music group trying to set up their equipment. They have live music every Saturday at 9PM till 12AM. They play classic songs from the 80s. The musicians would go around asking customers to contribute to the songs. A lady walked into the restaurant trying to sell roses. The nice pianist bought a rose for his lead singer. The food was spectacular! I ordered the mixed green salad with grilled shrimp, seared tuna,and pellmini. The mixed green salad with grilled shrimp was very flavorful. The chef was also very generous with the shrimp portion. The sear tuna was cooked perfectly. The pellmini is a must try. It's basically fried beef dumpling. You dip the pellmini into spicy mayo. Lychee martini was also to die for!!! I ordered Merlot by the glass and steak. Did not enjoy merlo much. Since they ran out of mashed potato, I got salad which had a flavorful dressing, steak was also okay. This is a local bar with a great atmosphere in a very out of the way location. It is right outside the Neck Road stop of the Q train in Brooklyn. There are pretty much no other bars in the immediate area, with the only other stores being a Russian supermarket and a furniture store. This doesn't seem to be much of an issue though since the place is almost always packed with no empty tables at peak times. The atmosphere is very nice, far more pleasant than most bars that I've been to. The lighting isn't so dark that you can't see and yet it's dark enough that you feel like its a relaxed environment. There is usually some live music in the evenings, but its just a guy with a guitar playing covers of classic songs (this is not a bad thing). The place itself is actually pretty small, but it gives it a nice friendly feeling. The bartender makes some of the best martinis that I've tried (the rest of the drinks are excellent as well). According to what I am told by my friends he is actually well known and draws a lot of the people into the bar through his reputation. The price for the drinks feels more like you are in Manhattan than Brooklyn, but I think it is worth it for the quality you're getting in terms of both drinks and environment. There are a couple of catches to this place. Number one, it is pretty much a Russian bar. This doesn't mean that they will have any problems at all with an American, the menus are in English and all the staff speaks English perfectly well, its just that you will notice that most of the people in there are Russian and are speaking Russian. The other down side to some people is that they don't really seem to care too strongly about the NYC indoor smoking ban. They don't really say you can smoke there, but they don't object either. If those two factors don't bother you and you are in that area of Brooklyn for whatever reason I strongly recommend you stop by one night with a couple of friends, I'm sure you'll enjoy yourself. read more

I admit I checked in too early, only to find the place closed on 12/26 evening. So this review is really based on a number of other times that I've come here. It has a really nice local vibe, and that's probably what attracts people to come here on a weekly if not daily basis. There's a sister(?) cafe on Manhattan beach, but I prefer this one. Some nights (all nights?) they have a live guitar/singer so really adds value to the atmosphere. Drinks may be a little overpriced? But I hear that if you're nice to some of the waiters, they comp a drink or shot once in a while. Funny story about their ceasar salad. First time I ordered it, the waiter asked "Do you want it chopped?" As I looked at him dumbfounded, I asked "how else does it come?" Followed by, "ok let's chop it" after the waiter obviously did not get my sense of humor. What I got was the unchopped version, basically a head of ice lettuce cut in half and grilled(?). It's yummy, but the practically whole piece of lettuce was a surprise element. Kid you not, this story, in almost exact words happened three more times. Only on the third time, did the salad actually came chopped, as in a regular ceasar salad. Perhaps they like surprises, either way it tasted good with the ceasar sauce and a crostini. read more

Anyway cafe became my new favorite spot in South Brooklyn! The drinks are delicious. I am usually not a martini person, but their martinis are just amazing. My favorite one is the pear martini, but I have also tried the grapefruit, pomegranate, peach, apple, and lychee and they were all really great as well. The food is also very delicious. I tried their mushroom soup which is one of their popular dishes and some appetizers. Their fried calamari is definitely worth trying! It seems like we came in here to drink a glass of water...for over an hour and a half...while they were chasing the cow that was supposed to be my burger, and hunting the duck that was supposed to be in my husbands ravioli. Not only did our food not arrive in all this time, but the waitress came over once after 45 minutes saying it was on it's way--with a casual laugh. This is unacceptable, especially with the place being half empty. The food finally arrived. The duck ravioli portion size was laughable, barely warm, and floating in what was basically soy sauce. My medium rare burger was overdone and came in a breakfast roll. What happened to all their buns? In fact, I am pretty sure they went to a local deli and bought the roll while making my burger. The potato skins were ok, oily and barely crispy. A lesson for the waitstaff: if the food is over an hour late, at some point early on you should have come by and offered something for us to nibble on--some bread with butter or even mixed nuts, and not avoid us while hanging out chatting at the bar. Another option is to notify us that our food is delayed so that we may choose to leave and find another place to eat if necessary. A quick apology when our food arrives and an offer of a dessert (God knows how long we'd have to wait for it, and how edible it would actually be) is not sufficient at all. Any decent manager should have comped this miserable meal--this review is their reward. I do remember a time when this place had good food, seems that time has passed. Who would've known that a little hole in the wall like this place would end up being such a gem in the neighborhood! Pro's: Live music everyday after 9 pm a great drink menu, from classic cocktails to funky ones I've never heard of, a good selection of wine's and whiskey too dim lighting, sets the mood, very chilled out very clean place, even the bathroom was spotless staff was very friendly , always there at your convenience, always serve with a smile on Wednesdays you get a free bottle of champagne with your meal on Mondays there is happy hour, and Tuesdays is ladies night! the menu had a good variety, from salads, to chicken, steak, seafood, pasta dishes, sandwiches and dessert the tomato and cheese appetizer was perfect, it had just the right amount of seasoning and balsamic vinegar, everything was fresh with a great presentation, they even threw some olives in there the skirt steak was perfect, it was juicy and had some sort of glaze on it, and it came with salad and mashed potatoes which were airy and not too heavy and good seasoning, the steak was such good quality that I didn't even need to use steak sauce the prices were decent, salads were 8-13 entrees ranged from 14-25 in the summer they open their patio ;] cons: some of the staff barely speak English, for us it was no big deal since we were Russian, but for other customers this could be a concern the place was cash only, and the atm inside the place charges 2.50 fee the décor is confusing, its hard to understand the theme of this place, it seems like an old fashion saloon type of vibe.. the chicken caeser salad, came with no dressing, we had to ask the waiter for dressing and for plates since we shared everything, they thought we were going to just eat off the plate, total confusion when we told them from the start it was for the two of us. the chicken was rather bland too. the portions are rather small to share , I left feeling a bit hungry would I come back here? definitely, I have yet to try more things! read more
