To start with, I ordered burnt ends-- which I was only permitted to order once I was able to describe that I knew what they were..lol...Ordered 1/2 Slab (6 bones) with Collards and Bbq Spaghetti. Got Larry J's signature bbq sauce (tasty) as well as the NC bbq sauce--my personal favorite-- needless to say I was well satisfied. I am going back this Saturday for the Whole Posse. Not gonna lie I gave this a 3/5 only because they gave me a butt ton of food Service was okay- slow however. I ordered beforehand to just pick it up and I still had to wait ten minutes past my order time. Food: quantity over quality. Burnt ends was dry and peppery , not sweet. Ribs were juicy but got dry easily. Brisket was tough. Mac and cheese was dry as well... Potato salad was good but it's really hard to mess that up. Fries were very salty but they got that crispiness. Location is pristine I guess so it's easy for them to get customers. I just wish the food tasted better .... read more

Really don't like to post negative ratings/reviews but wow, not good. Dude was on the phone when I walked up and looked like I was interrupting his conversation. Brisket sandwich was bone dry and had to dump all of the bbq sauce on it to try and salvage it. I know it's hard for bbq joints that don't smoke on premises but come on. Coworkers have been recommending this restaurant to me for quite a while and today I had some time so I decided to visit . I love beef ribs, but I don't have the opportunity to order them much. I ordered a large beef rib with two sides (collard greens and macaroni and cheese). For $36 I got 1 beef rib that was semi tender with hard edges, 6 oz of collard greens that were tough and 6 oz of Mac and cheese that didn't smell fresh. It was obvious that the Mac and cheese was reheated in a microwave for too long and I think the rib was too. The staff was friendly. I will not return or suggest this place to anyone I know. This food was a culinary disappointment. I ordered (via Uber Eats) a Turkey leg, collard greens and Mac and cheese. Each item ended up seeing the inside of my trash can. The Turkey leg was EXTREMELY hard and flavorless, not tender at all. The collard greens were very bitter and had no seasoning and the Mac and cheese was dry. Mind you, I ordered in the morning (they weren't open yet) but scheduled delivery for when they were open. I felt extremely taken advantage of. While the Turkey leg was big, I knew it would be tasteless as soon as I removed it from its foil sheath. It was evident that I received a turkey leg from the day before. I ordered food from Larry J's BBQ Cafe via an app, but then I realized it would be a while till I could sit down to eat, so I called in to see if they'd be willing to pack the fries separately in my Hillbilly Nacho appetizer (Fries, chili, pulled pork, cheese, jalapeno peppers) Half $7.95 before I headed on over. Larry J's is located in a building plopped in the middle of an urban greenspace with tables and chairs strewn about before it. You order at the window out front, and await your order by the window to the side where you may also claim some paper napkins and sauce packets if you wish. The fellow who took my call let me know in a reasonable manner that this request of mine took more time than they can normally extend to each order, but that it was no trouble this time. I appreciated that. Turns out they packed everything separately - the fries (as expected), the pulled pork in a pile, the chili in a soup cup, and the cheese in a sauce cup. Wow. I was imagining the pile of toppings layered up in a dish, with the fries separate. The pulled pork by itself was a bit dry in spots, but mingled with the chili, it was perfect. This was a nice mess of a dish once put back together. Larry catered a big lunch for us yesterday at our law firm, and for the rest of the day people could not stop talking about how good the food was. Growing up in Texas, I was so excited to have found a place that makes BBQ similar to what I grew up with and loved. I deeply regretted not snagging a plate of leftovers to bring home, but hey, that just means I need to take a drive over to Southie very soon. We had chicken, turkey, and pulled pork, all cooked perfectly and delicious. For sides, we did the cowboy beans, collard greens, and mac and cheese which were all packed with flavor and had everyone kept going back for seconds. Everything was fresh and HOT (temperature) which is always a nice surprise with catering. The sauces provided were fantastic - I did not catch all the names but they offer all sorts of regional options so whatever style of BBQ you are missing, you can have. There was a wide range of spice levels too, for those of you who don't like as much heat. I cannot wait to go back and try more of this menu. I have already been eyeballing future orders. Literally the best BBQ I've had here. So glad I found this place. The collared greens are to die for. They have a way bigger variety than a lot of other bbq places here. Burnt ends- yum. Short takes: Would not recommend the burnt ends or mac. Brisket was OK. Nice location nearby a park. A large group of us ordered while in the area for a convention. I didn't look up the place prior so I went in open and ordered what I would usually get from a place such as this. The guy in front was nice and it appeared the workers liked being there. It took a while for the food. I personally got the Burnt Ends platter with mac and cheese/baked beans. Burnt ends were very different and not in a good way. The rub was heavier with a strong peppery (black peppercorn and something else) flavor and the fat wasn't as rendered as other places. I wouldn't mind this if it had better flavors but it was also very chewy and slightly dry. It was overall some small bits of meat on a very large piece of fat. The portion size was good though I wouldn't expect a smaller one for around 19 dollars. The mac was also different, also slightly dry. It could have used more cheese. The beans on other hand didn't have the issue of the mac/meat where they were almost too soft, lacking some texture. Sauce reminded me of a slightly stronger version of their BBQ sauce, a lot better than what they give out. I usually don't add BBQ sauce to good burnt ends or brisket but it was necessary to cut the pepper and heavy fat flavor. I found it alright though watery; definitely ketchup based. First of all, I'm from Texas so when the website mentioned Texas on there, I got a little excited. Let me tell you this is NOT Texas style bbq. I got the box combo and a side of Mac and cheese. The brisket was dry, the baked beans tasted like Bush's baked beans from the can and I cannot figure out their potato salad. The Mac and cheese was dry and hard but I think that's because of the bread crumbs. I ordered sliced bread on the side which I did not receive. Complimentary sliced bread on the side is traditionally served with Texas bbq. There was also no bbq sauce on the side (which should be automatically served with bbq right?). No extras were given such as onions, pickle slices or jalapeños either. I attached a picture of the meal that I received and the Texas style bbq I was expecting and that I'm used to. read more

To my surprise after swiping my card, I am charged $3 each for a canned soda and more than advertised for each plate of food ordered. Sometimes you don't want to cause a scene. Not entirely sure what the deal is but I guess other yelpers are saying the location in Revere is permanently closed? I've never been to it, I just thought there was 2 places. This place right on the sea port is a fantastic location. Im giving it a 4 star for the food but I will say that the attitude of the owner almost made me give it a 3. The website menu and the menu posted on his window aren't the same. And a few places don't allow Ribs or Brisket to be one of the meat options for the combo meals. Or at the least they charge extra. But I couldn't see anything saying what meats are available or what not. Before I could barely get out the question he kinda shouts "Just tell me what you want, don't worry about it". Then I ask how many sides (Or "Fixins") it comes with. He holds up his 2 fingers. Now usually the people will ask me what I want for the sides ... but apparently at this place you have to just shout your order and hope that works out. Closest thing to a Soup Nazi as I've ever experienced in my journey. But then I started adding this and that and the order price went up a bit and that seemed to make him a little happier. Then I said "I'll take a Larry J's Sweat Tea", to which he replied "I Aint Got No Cups! ... Can't Find Them Anywhere around here, they all out!" ... what am I supposed to say to that? Anyways. Got Ribs, Sliced Brisket, and Pulled Pork, Smoked Chicken. BBQ Spaghetti, Mac and Cheese, Beans, Cornbread, Candied Yams. Ribs were actually pretty good but only a little bigger than a riblet size. A lot of a darker rub to it, extremely smokey flavor, tender enough but a tiny bit dry. Rub flavor is a bit on the mild savory side but in this instance I really enjoyed it. Still thought they would do better with the sauce so I reached in the bag and realized he'd given me just a big cluster of sauces. First one I pulled out was like a sweet bourbon sauce. It was some of the best sauce I've ever had. His menu offers 7 Sauces but I think I only got 3 different ones and the Vinegar NC sauce is the only one I could tell what it was. BBQ Spaghetti. I've heard of this stuff before but never tried it. Everyone will say it's regular spaghetti and red sauce. The main difference is that the sauce has a nice heat to it and the noodles might be smoked a bit. Mac and Cheese was great, baked style, butter and cheese balance each other out, hardens up pretty quick though. I do believe it was microwaved though, but that's alright. Pulled Pork is pulled nicely with some chunks still in there. Tiny bit dry but still good. Sauce was needed and it made it 100 times better. Brisket is sliced, so that's good. But real tough and leathery. Hard and thick. Flavor on the edge isn't bad, very smokey, a lot of rub. Even the most tender and juicy parts of the brisket though tasted like flavorless turkey to me. Chicken was smoked chicken and pretty good. Smoked well, maybe a nice brine. Nothing wrong with the chicken at all. Beans where essentially traditional canned baked beans, semi sweet bean sauce "gravy" and just pinto all day. Nothing bad, nothing special. Candied Yams was AWESOME! I don't know how anyone can screw it up though. Cornbread was a brick, hardest cornbread I've ever had. Paper didn't even want to come off. read more

Everything (brisket, ribs, pulled pork, wings, burnt ends) was super-dry. Friend said the sausage was good, but that's it. The guy that took our order was a complete jerk to us. Unfriendly, unhelpful, unresponsive to questions and surly. Fountain soda was one of the worst beverages I've ever drank and they didn't have any straws. Just an incredibly disappointing experience. We would have loved to give them repeat business and great word-of-mouth, but these guys take no pride in their craft. read more

Food is really good but the owner, who I assume is Larry J himself, is not friendly or helpful, and has a bit of a nasty attitude overall. Still, his food is amazing so I will go back, but I am telling you this upfront so that when you do go (and I hope you do) that it's nothing personal to you. I grew up eating out at Thai and Jamaican spots where this is normal (and even part of the charm really), so I was not really taken aback too much. Others might be! I have no idea about the food because we couldn't get past the horrible miserable rude dude at the counter. We were there for the jazz festival. So we stopped by Larry's J's BBQCafé. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich and the sweet potato fries. The only thing that saved it from being a two star is the sweet potato fries. The pulled pork had too much sauce and too much fat. It actually tasted it like the pig. It almost made me stop eating pork. My husband got the pulled pork sandwich and the potato salad potato. The potato salad saved from being a two star also. Both the potato salad was good, the sweet potato fries, but the pulled pork sandwich was thumbs down. The manager or owner was not particularly pleasant. The service is extremely slow considering they were only two people ahead of us. Then there was nothing to drink but unsweetened tea and I think water. The location is perfect for tourists who don't know any better. However, I don't think they have any repeat customers unless we just ordered the wrong thing. Beautiful location by the water. So I parked my car at Castle Island to walk around Southie for the afternoon on Saturday and found myself very hungry. That's when I saw this place near the waterfront. It's across from some fancy hotel on D street. Great setup here. Tons of outdoor space with lots of tables for dining and people watching. You stand outside and order through a window. The menu is hanging to your right. Larry took my order. Now, I've read the reviews that say he has an attitude, blah blah blah. Really people? Don't be such Massholes! He's really nice and actually wicked funny. He even came out to check on me and a few of the other guests while I was there. To me that shows how much he actually cares about people's experience there. I tried to order the burnt ends but to my disappointment they were out of them. I ended up ordering a half rack of ribs, a smoked brisket sandwich and a pint of collard greens. Yup. I was hungry! Didn't wait to long. maybe about ten minutes and he called out that my food was ready. Of course I had to eat some of it there. It was such a beautiful day and I'm in love with the great outdoor space he has. The ribs were magnificent! I ate everyone of them there. Perfect smokey BBQ with the sauce on the side. This guy knows his Q!! They packaged up the collard greens nice and tight so nothing spilled on my walk back to Castle Island. When I got home I had the Collard green which were absolutely amazing!! I doctored it up a little bit: sliced and diced the sandwich, mixed it with the Mac and cheese, supplemented with some more of my own cheese and bugger, and sprinkled on some crushed BBQ chips for crunch. OH MA GOD. Amazing! Let me tell you though: the items individually hold their own as great food. I just figured I'd add my own personal touch since I brought it home. I came here the other day to get some BBQ with some coworkers and met Larry and the crew. He hooked me up with a veggie burger (the black bean one) and it was really good! This was my first experience with a veggie burger and I am glad that I came to Larry and his team for that! A few of my friends got the BBQ and weren't happy about the amount of meat on the ribs for the price they paid, but they were happy with the chicken they had. I would say if you come here, grab the veggie burger and some sides or grab some chicken- either way you'll be happy! A bit expensive, but I expect that in Seaport. Great job at a catering event I had today. Ordered for 20 people and the food came 15 minutes early and was very hot. Plenty of options for everyone, even vegetarians. Potato salad was one of my favorites, I could've just eaten that alone. Mac n Cheese was a little dry but others seemed to like it. Awesome pulled pork, pulled chicken and spare ribs. Smoked flavor was delicious throughout and the different sauces (3) were great to try on everything. Food was 4-star and the catering was 5-star. Would recommend based off ease of ordering, delivery and group satisfaction. I'll be trying the brick & mortar location next time I have a chance. read more
