What a strange but unexpected surprise! In the middle of a random park in Seaport, Larry J's is a mom and pop BBQ place serving some darn good Texas style smoked meats. I stopped by dinner on a weeknight and was the only person there, the menu for dinner is different than lunch so just ask for what you want and Larry will tell you if they have it. I got a two meat plate of Brisket and Burnt Ends with collards and cowboy beans. The collards were good but a little watery and the Brisket was definitely a little too fatty and probably should have smoked at higher temp, but the Burnt Ends and beans easily made up for it. I came to Boston to visit for a convention. Larry J's was across the street from my hotel. It started to snow so we ordered for pickup via the Yelp app before walking over. There was a group that arrived before us that was ordering. They were obviously unfamiliar with the menu, but the way the presumed owner treated them was rude and unkind. I assume he was the owner because his picture is up there in the photos. When it finally got to my turn, I told him that I had placed an online order, and he said well what's the name? I ordered via my account but my SO paid with his card so I wasn't sure which name it would capture. I said his name instead of my own which turned out to be wrong, so I said mine. He passed us our order and we were in a hurry to leave that we almost forgot my drink until he yelled for us to come back. Now I get that it might have been cold, but I associate BBQ with Southern Hospitality and this guy has none. The food on the other hand was beyond amazing. My SO said that he would put up with the guy's attitude again because the food was worth it. We both had the Two Meat Combos, with the Pulled Pork and the Smoked Brisket. The meats were on point and the serving sizes were generous. The brisket was super tender and the fat just melted in your mouth. As sides, I picked the Mac and Cheese and the Texas Chili. The SO had a double order of Fries. The Texas Chili and the Fries were amazing. Flavors were great and perfectly cooked. The Mac and Cheese could've been improved on. I had a few pieces of pasta that weren't cooked and I had to add a lot of salt and pepper. I took away one star for the bad customer service. If you're thinking of heading here for food, you definitely should but make sure you already know what you want off the menu. O-M-G where do I even begin? One Saturday afternoon after recently moving in to the neighborhood (about a month ago), I got very hungry and decided to try this place. The best way for me to try a new place is to pretty much order everything off the menu. So, I ordered the wings (bbq & buffalo), brisket, sweet potato fries, mac n' cheese, smoked linked sausage, southern fried catfish, baked beans, candied yams, and the hillbilly nacho...because why not? The food was absolutely finger licking good! Since then, I have been back almost every weekend and the wings are my staple, but last night I had the pulled pork and was transported to another universe. Mmmm I'm so easily won over by BBQ. This was a small shack surrounded with outdoor seating. The food was good--not particularly amazing but it is HARD to find good bbq in Boston. There's a wide spread of barbecue options all made with time and love by Larry. He's a bit aggressive with the customers but I'll respect that if the food is good. I had the quarter rack of ribs, burnt ends, and sweet potato fries. I think I have an addiction...to sweet potato fries. These were fantastic but I'm a poor judge because I don't think I've ever had bad sweet potato fries... The burnt ends were okay... not what I was expecting for some reason. The meaty pieces were really tough and the fatty pieces were just all fat. I had to take a bite of one and then the other to balance it out. I've had some melt in your mouth burnt ends and this just didn't stand up to that. The ribs were quite tasty... nice and meaty with a good smokey flavor. Tried the food through Uber Eats and was slightly disappointed. I got the Whole Chicken Posse meal and burnt ends. Chicken was great and burnt ends slightly tough, but still good. The sauce was a bit thin and not as full flavored, so I used some store bought sauce as well. My main gripe was the mac and cheese, which seems to be a miss based on most reviews of it that I've read over the 2 year's worth of reviews on here. It lacked cheese and was more oily than cheesy. I'm not sure who loves this style mac & cheese, but they must be few in number. I think if this many people dislike it, a change should happen quickly. So I thought to myself, ¨okay, no customer service... let's see how the food is¨. Well. With BBQ as good as this, you can treat me however you want and I would still wait in line for a taste. You simply need to experience it for yourself to understand. I was having some people over today so I decided to take a chance on Larry, considering it's a 30 second walk from my apartment. For appetizers we had the wings and the Hillbilly Nacho which is fries smothered in delicious barbecue pork. Out of all the dishes we ordered, this was the star of the show. Do yourself a favor and order the Hillbilly Nacho. It'll change your life. We also ordered the fried catfish sandwich, the sausage sandwich, the brisket sandwich and the ribs. Everything was just so good but my favorite was the catfish. Unbelievably delicious. To top it all off, for our sides, we ordered the Mac & Cheese and the candied yams. I rarely review a place, but as a native Texan who lived in the Hill Country (and not in Austin, which is a theme park) I felt the need to address an area of specialty. Sadly, there are no competent Tex-Mex restaurants in Boston, so I had to default to the Republic's other main food, our beloved BBQ, which has strict requirements for its preparation and consumption. I found Larry J's to be quite competent, so I graded it on the Texan scale. Note this was an UBER delivery, so certain things are not reviewed. PROS: + Arrived with absolutely no sauce on the meat, but available on the side. This is an indication of the chef's competence, as sauce is used to cover up deficiencies in the meat. + Fat still on the brisket, which is a good thing. The meat near the fat and the bone produces the most flavorful meat. I don't mind a bit of shaving for better taste. + Sides were competently executed, but subject to one caveat below. Fries were impressively good for a BBQ place, where they are often an afterthought. + Flavors were excellent for this area of the US, again subject to 1 caveat, below. + Three sauces on the side, one representing the molasses-heavy North Carolina style, one representing the ArkLaTex pepper style, and one that was allegedly the representative of Texan "spicyness." + All in all, it will keep a Texan sane, which is a good thing. KINDA-CONS: = Everything was too... cold. Not temperature wise, but spicy-wise. Texas BBQ is about punishing yourself for your sinful ways, and the heat is the way to do so. Still, considering that Texas-level heat would probably mean Larry wouldn't sell anything, I'd give it a break. A necessary accommodation to soft northern palates. = In the Republic, using apple and hickory to smoke meat will get you shot, and the cops will call it justifiable. One only uses mesquite and pecan, but I imagine that it's quite difficult to get either up here, so it's forgivable. CONS: - Beans in chili. Absolutely criminal. If this was Boerne there would be riots. The fact that I had to go to the spiciness of the food and the type of tree used is an indication of Larry's overall quality, and I'll be back. Had to unexpectedly feed 14 people dinner yesterday so I thought I would give a neighbor some business. At 3pm I ordered over $100 worth of food to pickup at 5pm via their website. When I got the confirmation it came back as ready at 5:30, which really wasnt helpful. I went just after 5 to see if I could pick it up. Sorry to say, the ribs were gray and dull and clearly hadn't been near a flame in quite a while. The Arkansas sauce was unremarkable. I also ordered buffalo wings. The wings were covered with some sauce that wasn't buffalo sauce and were not fried crispy ( I'm not talking about breading). When I asked about the sauce they insisted it was buffalo. Julia G's Yelp review captured my attention and got me intrigued about Larry's offering. I've been smoking my own meats and making my own rubs over the last few years as a hobby and have really come to appreciate flavorful southern BBQ. With relatives from Houston, we take our BBQ seriously. My first call to Larry was to get a quote for a party catering to 50 people. Instantly I knew Larry and I would get along. He was downright honest and helpful in figuring out what was necessary for the party. I had already decided I was going to use Larry, but went down to try the food anyways for any final adjustments. FOOD REVIEW Wow! I took a single order home for 3 us to try. Ribs, brisket, pulled pork, and chicken with Texas caviar, potato salad, and one of the beans (can't remember which one it was). I also planned to serve 3 sauces; Arkansas Red (hot), Texas (spicy), and Honey Chipotle (sweet). For the final order, we switched out the potato salad for sweetened yams, the beans for mac and cheese, added a couple gallons of lemonade, and added corn bread. [Not that there was anything wrong, we made changes based on the guests that were attending.] HOLY MOLY! We were all taken aback hovering over our generously portioned take out container like vultures. Clearly Larry's got the time and patience to make phenomenal BBQ. Everything was amazing!!! The meats stole the show! So much flavor and cooked perfectly! Any BBQ lover knows getting that smoke deep into the chicken is hard and Larry's pulled it off amazingly. The brisket is out of this world. The ribs so flavorful and cooked to perfection. The pulled pork tender and tasty, but not over sauced. I have to pause a moment to pay special tribute to the Arkansas Red sauce though. Larry was kind enough to share with me how he recreated this sauce from his childhood memories. This sauce is like liquid CRACK! Wow is it amazing! While the BBQ will win awards on its own, this sauce completes the picture. It accents every other flavor perfectly! It's addictive; you can put it on anything! Add it to Texas caviar for an extra boost! We wiped the container clean with bread to not leave any behind! Our guests devoured the brisket and pulled pork first! The buns were amazing too! A handful of ribs, some sides, and some chicken remained which was quickly consumed the next day. The "crack" sauce was the hit amongst the three sauces. Wow make sure you eat that corn bread warm; so good! Larry had even made arrangements during a busy Comic Con weekend to have the food delivered outside of Boston for a very reasonable rate. The order for 50 arrived hot and ready to devour and tasted exactly like we had it the week before as a single order takeout. Larry is extremely personable. I live in the Fort Point Channel area between Broadway and the newer Seaport area and on a recent walk to explore the ever-changing Seaport, I stumbled upon this literally hidden gem. Tucked between two hotels in a small park, this funky little park building houses this barbecue restaurant that is open all year. The owner Larry offered no recommendations of what his favorite was, and compared the question to whether or not people have favorite children. He definitely has a sense of humor that I'm sure conservative Boston residents and tourists don't expect from a chef. After ordering a combo of pulled pork and some sides, I decided that the food was tasty and would be coming back for more in the future. For its location (seaport: prime real estate) its very reasonably priced compared to the restaurants in the area. Its flavorful casual fare perfect to bring back to the office for meetings or to enjoy in the adjacent outdoor dining area. As a wedding photographer here in Boston, I hosted about 10 photographers for a luncheon at my Fort Point studio to network and review wedding albums. For the lunch, I called Larry J at the last minute to see if he would be able to cater. He called me right back to let me know he had a driver able to get it over to my studio on time. My other option would've been to use the Postmates delivery service since I was ordering a large amount of food. When it came to placing my order, I rambled off a few items without a menu in front of me and Larry helped with some suggestions. It was a rapid-fire order as I knew he was busy as was I. I knew I wasn't going to be disappointed and neither would any of the people attending the wedding photography meeting. As soon as the food arrived, everyone was so impressed. I tried to get a little of everything. We got chicken wings, pulled pork, burnt ends, cole slaw, baked beans, chili, potato salad, texas caviar, cowboy beans, mac & cheese, collard greens and even candied yams. Mmmm BBQ I remember eating at Larry Js when it first opened at the original location in Chelsea MA. A few coworkers and my self would eat st Larry's at least twice a week. The burnt ends with corn bread dipped in the House BBQ sauce was absolutely fabulous. Larry was always very pleasant and professional and the restaurant was spotless even on rainy days the floors would sparkle. The proprietor has spunk and a no-nonsense attitude, but delivers it with humor that is apparently a little too subtle for some tourists and snobbish Yelpers. I've been there twice now, and the food was great - this is from a guy who was born in Texas, and spends a fair amount of time in Louisiana. When we got there, Larry J's had just gotten an order supposedly 30mins ago that the delivery man said was for $300 worth of food. So we were waved off to take a seat and wait...and wait...and wait. Can I say that our account would've been thousands of dollars for over 300 people vs. his small order that maybe was for 20 people?? And the fact that we made an appointment to meet before hand threw us all off. We were ready to peace outta there! However, after about 20-25mins of waiting (and to be fair, he yelled through his window that he was trying to put something together) a sample platting of rib, brisket, and pulled pork was served and man-0-man it was GOOD. The rib was fall off the bone juicy, the brisket had the fat left on, which gives is SUCH flavor!! We were also given sample sides in ketchup cups of his version of baked beans, cole slaw, and potato salad. The Cole-slaw was not for everyone I'd say...it's highly vinegar infused and has no mayo involved. The potato salad was AWESOME!! Creamy, got a nice light egg flavor, and not grossly sticky and fattening tasting. Baked beans were actually served cold and almost as a salsa type...it was mild compared to the other 2 flavors and was a nice contrast from the saucy meats, I really enjoyed it Bottom line: the food is most excellent which is why there's so many good stars, but multiple people have attested to Larry's sassy attitude as being a supreme downer and it really showed on my visit. I work in the Seaport area and my co-worker and I were out and about on a sunny day, looking for something different. We wanted to treat ourselves and go for a nice walk and this place seemed perfect. Located across from Boston's fish pier, within a small park, this BBQ shack-like structure seems like a perfect spot. It's highly visible and there's nothing next to it or above it. The modest, stand-alone structure seems relatively new and is well maintained. We walked up to the window, and after glancing at one of the printed menus next to it, placed our order. I went with a brisket sandwich ($9) and a side of coleslaw ($5.96). The pricing was a bit weird but I was hungry and it was meant to be a treat so I voluntarily obliged and then proceeded to wait by the window. We were the only ones in line even though it was 12:45PM-ish which was kind of weird and the guy on the other side who took our order wasn't all that nice and borderline rude. We waited for a few minutes and then that same guy, who I suspect is the owner, slide the ordering window open and rudely asked us to walk around the shack onto the other side, to the other window so that we could eventually get our food. He accused us of blocking the way for other patrons... even though they were no other patrons... and plenty of space. It was really weird and the whole situation was pretty awkward. Fast forward 15 more minutes and I'm back at my desk eating the sandwich. The brisket was lean but dry, flavorless and the smoke ring on it was barely visible. Not impressed at all. Worst of all, the coleslaw was horrendous. I've be very hard pressed to return here because of how rude they were and also because of their pricing and food quality. On the upside, they'll probably have to step up their game because otherwise they'll be in real trouble since a BBQ restaurant will be opening at the corner of Stillings and Congress Street late in 2016. I want to like this BBQ spot...it's outdoors, it's across from my apartment and the food isn't terrible. The problem I have with this establishment is the customer service of the gentlemen who takes your order. I'm not sure if he's the owner but he's been there on both occasions when I frequented the place. On both of my visits he was extremely rude and unpleasant to deal with. I'm not picky...I don't need white glove service...especially not from a BBQ joint but I also don't expect outright rudeness. Needless to say I won't be coming back here. If you're in the area and you really NEED BBQ then give this place a shot. If you can settle for anything else besides BBQ then steer clear. While Larry definitely does a solid job delivering the BBQ items I usually order: pulled pork sandwich for lunch, pork ribs for dinner, its the other items that steal the show. The Brisket While some folks complained that it was too fatty, I was not bothered. Like all of Larry J's offerings it was perfectly tender, juicy and tasty -- fatty or not. I'm pretty sure if, given enough time in the smoker, Larry could make my shoe taste good. The brisket sandwich is my go-to lunch. Burnt Ends By appearance, my first assumption was that these three-bite cubes of meat would be dry and charred tasting. I was pleasantly surprised to find these blackened morsels to be flavorful, smokey and tender. Hawg Wings After learning that they were out of burnt ends one day, Larry said, "Two words for you: hawg wings." I've since ordered them with every meal. Perfectly tender and fall-off-the-bone delicious. They're everything you love about chicken wings, but with the full flavor of pork. Beef Ribs Larry told me I was going to like them and he was right. These enormous, Flintstonian ribs are impossibly tender, juicy and smokey. As a general rule, I will order pork ribs over beef ribs as the beef ribs tend to be tough and hard to chew. This it not the case here. My assumption is that Larry smokes these things for a loooong time before they end up on your plate. Overall, it's clear that Larry carefully prepares everything he makes. There's nothing I haven't enjoyed -- from the sides to the teasers to the entrees. Everything is good and some is downright magical. Additionally, it's located in cute park in the Seaport District with outdoor seating. Larry is a true character and a BBQ virtuoso. Order wings, because everyone loves wings. Pork ribs are outstanding. Tender & juicy, not over-cooked, with an appealing smoke flavor that lingers on the palate. My preference is for the Arkansas sauce, similar to Texas, but with a kick. Let me take a moment to compliment the sides - no gloppy mac & cheese, here - oven baked, small firm noodles that haven't met with the indignity of overcooking, with a crisp, lightly breaded top. And beans with a hint of - mmm, cinnamon? - I don't know, but I don't care - because instead of overcooked, oversalted beans, these were small, perfectly cooked and flavorful. Cornbread is dense and moist. And the slaw? If you're a fan of vinegar, you'll be a fan of this slaw. Perfect compliment to the pulled pork and smoked boneless chicken. Seriously better than most other BBQ in the Boston area. - Locally owned - BBQ in the Seaport is a nice change of pace from the many fancy restaurants - Fun to sit outside in the park at lunch or dinner time - Standard/reasonable BBQ prices - They have a solid catering offering THE BAD - The sides aren't always all available - The mac 'n' cheese desperately needs a new recipe. The current iteration is oily and not good. - This is quite possibly THE SLOWWWWWESTTTTTT "quick-serve" place I've ever been to. If you see more than 5 people ahead of you in line, you might as well head back to the office because ordering and preparing the food takes FOREVER. - It's a well-known fact how slow the service is here as evidenced by many conversations I've overhead in line on several occasions. Larry J's would get far more business if they could figure out how to speed up the order taking and food pickup. If many other places in the area can do it, these guys can too. They'll make WAY more $$ if people are confident they can get their order quickly and get back to work. Overall: Worth giving a shot. Kind of weird that it opens at 1pm on Saturdays. You miss the 11am-1pm lunch crowd that way! read more

A serious caveat about Larry J.'s as they first get themselves going: it takes forever. As in something like a 30-minute wait for maybe a dozen people in line. There's one guy taking orders, another guy makin' food. There are homemade signs with missing information, and not much else. you get the feeling that those poor guys are just beleaguered and need some helpers and some time to get their system down. The good news is, the food is actually pretty darned tasty. The pulled-pork sandwich was really yummy, and appropriately overflowing with meaty goodness. The barbecue isn't sloppy, but it is pervasive, tangy and a little bit spicy nevertheless. Next time i'll know they have french fries too (aforementioned lack of a real menu). The signs they did have mentioned ribs, burgers, and (crossed-out) brisket, too. And it's in the middle of that little park across from the piers, so there's lots of nice places to sit and eat outside. If they get things squared away, this place will be awesome. Whoa did I eat at the same place as everyone else? My ribs had almost no meat and were extraordinarily flabby. The burnt ends were probably 60% fat and not well-seasoned. Expensive and took forever. Owner was nasty to some customers (not me but I witnessed it). read more

BBQ was decent, the sides were not. Some of the mac pasta was not cooked at all, and tasted stale like it had been sitting out all day. The wings were mediocre at best. Chef and owner Larry was oddly hostile both towards us and his cashier. Recommend that he take a few etiquette courses like "Let's not yell at the customer today" and "Hey, let's fix the menu so its not so hard to understand". Needless to say, things got quite awkward....fast. We were considering getting food catered to our office but are now disinclined to give this place any future business. read more

Ordered pork ribs one weekday night. Larry J was not happy. He was angry that I paid him $14 for a small rack of pork ribs 10 minutes before closing. Poor Larry J. Ribs were mediocre. Tiny portion. Nothing special about this shack. Mediocre everything. Won't ever go back to get a big portion of Larry J's attitude, that's for sure. read more

We were in the area for a tradeshow. Walking back we noticed his cafe by chance (it's pretty small). We couldn't make up our minds and only had a limited time for lunch. He recommended the pulled pork sandwich for my coworker and the brisket for me. Woah, it was so soft and tender. We both tried the other's and was suitably impressed. The sauce really cemented it as awesome though. Make sure you ask for extra though because you will want more! read more

Just what I've been waiting for in the Seaport! The food here was pretty good. My friend had pulled pork sandwich and I had a dry rubbed half rack of need ribs. The beans were super hot but tasty and the slaw has a good tanginess to it. Someone walked around with samples of their fried pickles and I have to admit that it might actually be better than Redbones. It was accompanied by an interesting and delicious dip on the side. Overall, I would recommend this place. It's definitely a great addition to those who want more diverse dining at the Seaport especially for lunch. read more

If you like to spend your money on mediocre food and RUDE service, this is the place for you. The setting is ideal, and my hope is that a better establishment will open there. Even if the food had been awesome - which it is NOT -- I would not go back. It's rare that I write a bad review, but also rare to be treated so unkindly. BTW... I simply don't believe responses from the establishment that they want everyone to have a positive experience. If that were true, they would not continue to treat people rudely! Was in town for a friend's graduation. Our hotel was in the middle of the financial district and all around us was tourist trap restaurants and places to eat. We weren't far (driving) from the cheaper chinatown or any regular fast food joint but that meant taking our car out of the parking garage and we did not want to be bothered. So we started walking from our hotel and came across a small park with a mini restaurant in the middle of it. First of all you can smell the food from 4-5 blocks away. As we got closer our stomachs started to growl. The food here is damn good. You are not supposed to find good BBQ in Boston for crying out loud. This is the place of fish and chowder and beans. Here in the middle of the financial district in the park inside a cafeteria like small kitchen this place existed. Well we got a nice lunch serving of Burnt ends, ribs, and these amazing chicken wings. The owner was there by himself. Very nice guy. He said we came after the lunch rush and we were sad to learn that the pulled pork was all gone. We didn't wait long at all for our food. We also got some potato salad. My favorite was the wings which we asked and got a variety of homemade sauces to try with them. Also the burnt ends was awesome. We couldn't even finish the food. We packed everything up and thanked the owner for a very random lunch bbq meal. We had intended to come back but with the weather being crap he said he would probably have shortened hours on sat and closed on sunday. Sadly the food we brought back we didn't eat cause the fridge in our room wasn't working. We hope our next trip back to Boston Larry's is turned into a full fledged restaurant with 7 days a week hours. read more
