Great service and amazing food Drinks were absolutely amazing and full of flavor Hailey the bartender was the best - welcoming, friendly and a true hustler ! With a local funeral in progress, she dominated the tables and bars with quick service ! Will return before I return back home read more

I had a very disappointing experience with Hunter's Bar and Restaurant. After leaving the restaurant, I checked my charges and noticed that the original charge had been changed. On top of that, I was charged three times for the one drink I had. I spoke directly with the restaurant manager to get an explanation and resolve the issue. Instead of properly addressing why my original charge was changed and why I was charged multiple times for one drink, they tried to tell me that I was "too drunk." That explanation made absolutely no sense considering I only had one drink and then left. I am also requesting that the restaurant preserve and provide the security camera footage from the time I was there. The footage should clearly show that I only had one drink and may help verify exactly what happened. Being charged multiple times and then having the original charge changed is frustrating enough, but being given excuses instead of a straightforward explanation or resolution made the experience even worse. I recommend that anyone visiting carefully check their receipt and bank charges afterward. I assume the charge came from the group sitting at the table, which i was asked if i was with them and declined. read more

Hunters has been on our list to try for a long time, but parking in South Boston is something else This fourth we ventured on over and it was one of the best meals we've had in a long time. Our waitress Bonnie was a gem! She had great recommendations and was very knowledgeable about the menu. The cornbread, I can't say enough about how amazing it was and the cheese on the bottom of the skillet, what a treat! The drinks were amazing. Bonnie helped my husband pick his drinks because he was unsure about the offerings and her picks were great! The chicken wings were cooked perfectly. The macaroni and cheese, don't ask questions about it just get it and don't be surprised that as it starts to cool, it tastes even better than when it first hits the table. Hubs had the pulled pork sandwich which was a big hit. Collard greens had a bit too much vinegar for me it, but I think it just needed some sugar and hot sauce. The mashed potatoes and gravy was fire. Whatever they boil those potatoes in is working!. Overall it was a great meal. The only complaint, if I have to have one is that the playlist in the kitchen was a lot better than it was in the restaurant. We definitely will come back again!! Ps: Hubs woke up telling me he wants his own cornbread next time! read more

Cool vibe. Friend described as a southern food bar which isn't wrong but I wouldn't say that it was exclusively that. Went for a brunch'ish meal on Saturday morning (open at 10), had a solid sausage and burnt ends hash. Good flavor but didn't blend quite as well as I would have guessed. Maybe needed more egg or cheese. Friendly staff. read more

Bobby Flay's best gumbo win is what sent me to South Boston, and let me tell you, the hype is real. Spoiler: I made it through TSA with leftovers. That's how good it was. I tried the mac and cheese, cornbread, and of course Lambo's award-winning gumbo. The mac was a solid 10/10. Creamy, flavorful, and pure comfort, even with the breadcrumbs (iykyk). The spoon bread was just okay for me. It leaned a bit too buttery and slightly undercooked, but shoutout to my amazing server and bartender for kindly comping it. Now the gumbo absolutely ate. As someone who loves New Orleans food, I know good gumbo, and Lambo truly gets it. Every bite was packed with meat, bold flavor, and soul. If you're in Boston, take the train and head to Hunter's Kitchen & Bar. Your tastebuds will thank you. read more

I came here for my birthday brunch with high hopes, especially since this restaurant is known for its gumbo and has the reputation of beating Bobby Flay in a cooking competition. Unfortunately, the experience was underwhelming overall. I ordered the signature gumbo and was very disappointed. It was extremely watery, heavily herb-flavored, and lacked the rich, traditional New Orleans-style roux I was expecting. For $25, the portion was also disappointing and only 2 shrimp, about 4 pieces of sausage, and one small piece of lump crab. The rice paired with it was actually flavorful and one of the better parts of the dish, but it couldn't save the gumbo itself. The Vermont butter biscuits were one of the highlights, absolutely delicious when served warm. They were soft, buttery, and flavorful. My only complaint is that the portion was too small. The brisket was tender, but it was served extremely cold, and the BBQ sauce that came with it was also ice cold, which really took away from the dish. The mac and cheese tasted exactly like frozen Stouffer's and was honestly the biggest disappointment of the meal. The fried pickles had good flavor, though I ordered them expecting more okra in the mix and there was barely any. The potato salad was surprisingly excellent, well-balanced, creamy, and one of the best things we tried. The cowboy steak bites had potential but were extremely overcooked, oily, and lacked flavor. Definitely not something I would order again. Service was inattentive throughout our visit. No one checked in to ask how the food was, remove menus, or acknowledge that I barely touched my gumbo. I had ordered two bowls, and only after bringing it to the manager's attention was it corrected. The atmosphere was another downside. The music was so loud that it was hard to hear the people at my table. We specifically made a 3:30 reservation because the website stated live music would end at that time until later in the evening, but that wasn't the case. The strawberry guava margarita was very good, but overall this wasn't the birthday brunch experience I had hoped for. Between the inconsistent food, inattentive service, and overall lack of attention to detail, I don't see myself returning. read more

LAMB JAM SUPPER CLUB! Amazing event with the Chef the winner of this year's Lamb Jam restaurant events. With a stellar crew, the event went so swift and easy. So let me say, the 3 Chefs food was AMAZING! The lamb croquetas, the pita stuffed with lamb sausage... STILL thinking about it! But this review is for Hunters, and not for Brink or Amba. Let me say that the sweet tea lamb ribs were all of that lamb, not silenced (unfortunately its a cut that is very fatty, which was a good thing because it rendered fat for the roasted potatoes). Goodness gracious my balls were on fire! = the lamb fat roasted potatoes in a super garlicky aioli (CAN YOU HEAR THE ANGELS SINGING?). A mountain amount of potatoes no one could stop eating (but with SO MANY OF THEM, there were to-go containers everywhere). Roasted carrots that makes you eat your veggies with passion, and corn bread in a cast iron skillet that will make you slap yo mama. If you live in the area and haven't visited... I feel sorry for your loss! WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?! read more

Oh Wow! Hunter's kitchen, You are simply not what I expected!!!! The entertainment here is Amazing!!! Live Bands Rock!! I thought laid back, Sunday dinner, with some good soul food, but you give so much more. Thanks for the Amazing service too. We are a party of five friends visiting beantown looking for delicious soul food. Well we found it! For starters, me and my friend got your Amazing cornbread. Delicious skillet cooked cornbread with corn inside with a scoop of honey butter on top! Yes, the hit of the night. For entrees, Mary and I got the chicken sandwich, both with fries and a side of greens. Greens are spicy but delicious. PD and the Matriarch got fried chicken with greens and coleslaw. Sanders got the chicken and dumplings. Food is 10/10! Everything is good! read more

Hunters might be my new favorite Southie spot! We were able to walk in at around 2 on a Sunday. We had the mini waffles, burnt end hash, and southern skillet. Incredible food. I recently visited Hunter Kitchen and Bar during a busy brunch hour, and while the atmosphere truly shines, the food and service left something to be desired for the price point. Starting with the positives, the vibe is fantastic--it's a classy take on Southern charm, with wood panels everywhere that really enhance the country feel. The country music playing in the background added to the welcoming, relaxed ambiance, making it a great spot to unwind. On the food side, I tried the Rice Bowl with BBQ pulled chicken. The chicken itself was moist and tender, but it could have benefited from trimming some of the excess fat and tendons. Unfortunately, the dish focused more on presentation than flavor, coming across as a bit bland overall. The gluten-free Kale Salad with regular pulled chicken was another miss for me; the kale had far too many tough stems, which detracted from the enjoyment. As for drinks, the Ginger Snap Mocktail sounded promising with its description hinting at spice, but it turned out overly sweet with no heat whatsoever--disappointing given the expectations set. Service during peak times felt rushed; the staff seemed prioritized on pushing orders to the kitchen rather than providing a warm introduction or attentive check-ins. The noise level was high, which is understandable for brunch, but it contributed to a less polished experience. In summary, Hunter Kitchen and Bar has a lot of potential with its charming decor and theme, but the food didn't quite deliver on taste or value, and the service could use more hospitality during busy periods. I'd give it 3 out of 5 stars--worth a try for the atmosphere, but I might skip the food next time. read more

Before coming in, I called my order ahead for gumbo. Based on how it was shown online, it appeared that the gumbo and rice were separate, so that's what I expected. When I picked up my order, I realized the rice had already been mixed into the gumbo. I politely asked if it would be possible to make another one with the gumbo and rice served separately. Instead of trying to resolve the issue, he told me I would have to pay for both the original order and the replacement. He also said, "I can't take the rice out of the gumbo," which I completely understood. I wasn't asking him to remove the rice--I was simply asking if they could remake it the way I had expected based on the menu. What disappointed me the most wasn't the mistake itself, but the lack of customer service. There was no effort to understand the confusion or offer a reasonable solution. As a customer, I left feeling like my concerns didn't matter. Unfortunately, this experience fell short of what I expect from a restaurant, and because of how the situation was handled, I don't see myself returning. read more

I was a bit disappointed with my reservation, which, by the way, I highly recommend. My Valentine and I made reservations a week ago. We walked in and it was packed with a one man band, who was great but it was sooooo loud! They took us over to the window, looking out at the hardware store. It was like a little space to have more people. We were on stools. Not looking at each other. I went to the hostess and told her our situation. She gave us a few minutes then said that she had a table by the one man band. We didn't mind because it was so loud anywhere you sat. Lots of younger people. Which we didn't mind either. It is a fun place. We ordered drinks with an appetizer, Cowboy Steak. So tender and tasty!!! After a few more drinks, we decided to order our meals. It's 5:30 at this point. We didn't truly get seated until 4:30. The waitress said she had to check if we could order because with reservation seating, they give you 90 minutes? She worked it out so that we could stay. My Valentine ordered Gumbo...he loved it! I got chicken fried steak (ribeye) and it was delicious along with country mashed potatoes. It's not cheap but worth it. Parking is a bit tough. But all in all, it was about the food which I highly recommend. read more

decided to try this restaurant after seeing so many great reviews on TikTok and Google, but unfortunately, I was highly disappointed with the food. I ordered the beignets, which were $10 for four. They had very little flavor and were basically just fried dough topped with powdered sugar. They were extremely bland. I also ordered the pancakes, which were not traditional pancakes at all. They were served in a cast-iron pan and had more of a cornbread-like texture with blueberries. Unfortunately, the dish lacked flavor, and the melted butter they served on top didn't taste good either. I also tried the strawberry lemonade, which tasted more like syrup mixed with water than an actual strawberry lemonade. The one positive thing I can say is that the waitresses were very nice, and the service was good. Overall, I was very disappointed with my experience. This is a perfect example of why you can't always rely on restaurant reviews you see on social media. Everyone's taste is different, but for me, the food simply did not live up to the hype. I will not be going back. read more

The food at Hunter's Kitchen & Bar is amazing!! Everything I ate was a 10/10. We found this place on a whim while in Boston for a weekend. The place itself is very popular so I highly recommend making a reservation. FYI there is a $40 hold placed on your credit card to book a reservation. If you no show or cancel within 24 hours they will charge you. We had a reservation but we ended up sitting at the bar so we wouldn't have to wait. We started off with the fried pickles and the everything bagel biscuit bites. The butter they put on these biscuits is out of this world! The shrimp and grits were also another highlight of the day! This was probably the best shrimp and grits I've ever had. Overall, I was not disappointed with the food. However I am deducting 1 star because the atmosphere is pretty loud and gives college bar vibes, which isn't a bad thing, but does make it hard to enjoy a meal. read more

Foot was delicious!!!! The atmosphere is loud if you're into that. Sat outside which was nice. Got great service through the experience

Let's start with the only good thing: Hunters Kitchen and Bar looks nice. The place has a cozy, southern cabin vibe that almost tricks you into thinking the food is about to be good. It's not. The food was straight-up bad. No flavor, no care, nothing memorable in a good way. The customer service was just as disappointing--barely attentive, not welcoming, and clearly not interested in the dining experience. I go out to eat to be taken care of, not ignored. My friend ordered the pulled BBQ (forgot to take a picture), and she rated it a 4/10. The beignets? Also a 4/10. Honestly, that might've been generous. Bottom line: I wouldn't recommend this place and I definitely won't be returning. Boston deserves way better when it comes to soul food, because this place missed the mark completely. read more

Came here for my birthday on April 1, 2023 and let me tell ya, the line was super long. It was my first time coming there but we had reservations for 12 but the parking situation was horrible but no fault to the restaurant. Took some of my family 30 min to find parking. So back to Hunters, I would have to say this isn't a kid friendly place. Our table for 12 was next to the fireplace and speakers which sucked but like I said I can't blame them for that. The service was amazing and so was the food. I also love country music so it didn't bother me lol. Now lets review the food: Popcorn chicken- This was a hit for the kids, very moist chicken and super good Chicken & Waffles- The chicken again was cooked to perfection and seasoned very well but the waffles was out of this world. Super tasty Gumbo- This was the highlight for me! This bad boy right here was amazing. The spice was perfect as well. I'll be back just without the kiddo next time.. read more

Saturday night during college football season? Bad idea to come to Hunter's for dinner. I wanted to go to South Boston to meander around, eat at Fat Baby, and go bowling. My mother wanted southern food, so we headed to Hunter's instead. Since we had a filling lunch we ordered a few smaller plates: Hushpuppies, BBQ Ribs, and Lambo's Gumbo. The hushpuppies are big, too big really, and they're served on a bed of whipped butter. Half a cup of butter would have been too much butter for these things, but I think they served them on more than that. The pumpkin spice flavor in the butter was interesting, but I would have preferred a small plate with 6-8 smaller hushpuppies with a little spicy remoulade or something more snacky. But overall they tasted fine and despite their large size they were cooked through. The ribs were good, tender enough and all that, but they were missing something I couldn't quite put my finger on that makes good ribs so delicious. You know the ones I mean- can't stop eating them, you go a little caveman on them and lick your fingers after for just a little more of those delicious ribs. The ribs at Hunter's? No. The menu labled the gumbo as the signature dish and Google informed me that this was a Beat Bobby Flay winning dish. Shrimp, crab, andouille sausage, and Charleston rice sounded good and I was curious. Was it good? Sure, best dish of the three we ordered. The seafood was tender, the gumbo was flavorful, the rice was nice. But it was also spicy which the menu doesn't say, but I suppose you should just assume. Hours later I remembered why eating spicy gumbo on vacation isn't always the right move for me. I should have learned this after my trip to New Orleans, but I am a sucker for all carbs. I was happy with my choice, for a bit anyway. But I will say if you are like me- order the gumbo but have a pepto chaser. This trip was in late September and the menu on their website looks different now, so perhaps with that change things have improved. But a restaurant is more than just its food, so I'll also add the atmosphere was awful. The decor provides a certain ambiance that makes it seem like a nice place for dinner, but it's just not. Too loud for conversation, too many college age kids in here drinking and not eating, and they have zero sense of personal space. Sitting at our table for two near the bar we were jostled by frat boys the entire meal. They'd apologize and then do it again. Our server disappeared after dropping off the food and didn't come back the rest of the time until it was time for the check. Which we asked for and then waited, and waited, and continued to wait for. Was the place busy? Kind of, though those of us at tables were the minority. Ruining your guests dining experience by overfilling the bar area is a bad idea. Maybe there's a better time of the week to go for a nice dinner, but it sure wasn't the night I went. read more

I'll start by saying that I usually am not here for "southern" restaurants in Boston because...it's Boston. LOL. But I was pleasantly surprised by Hunter's Kitchen & Bar. While parking is definitely a challenge (not their fault), I found the very last spot at the parking lot around the corner. I met here for dinner with a friend who had parking woes for a while, so I just sat around and took in the scenery. The wooden walls made it feel like I was back in Oklahoma. We ordered the mac & cheese with brisket, candied yams, and biscuits. We thought we were just going to have those as appetizers, but they were filling, and I even took some of the Mac & cheese home because it was such a substantial portion. It was the bomb, and I really enjoyed the candied yams. They were a bit softer than I usually have them, but that was not a bad thing, and they had all the right spices. The biscuits were also a nice touch. I ordered chicken & waffles to go, so that I could have something for lunch the next day. While I tend not to review businesses based on to-go food that is reheated, I will say that the chicken & waffles were still quite good the next day. I'll be back! read more

I went here for dinner and drinks at 8pm on a Tuesday. I wasn't expecting it to be as loud as it was for a Tuesday. The music was very loud so people were yelling just to hear each other. The volume was over 90 decibels according to my watch. It was hard to have a conversation at my table, which was made worse by having a very wobbly table because if I tried to lean forward, then my drink would nearly spill. I went with two of my friends to Hunter's today and needless to say the experience was... interesting. We had a reservation for 1PM which is the beginning of peak, but we were seated immediately which was great! Our server (not sure if she ever told us her name) was sweet and very attentive. We tried the Big Jens Elixir, Blood Hound and The Floor is Guava and all drinks were great. We then ordered starters and thats where the real magic began. For starters, we got the Popcorn Chicken Mac and Cheese and the Honey Butter Cornbread. Popcorn Chicken: nicely battered and the taste was great! Nice chunk sizes and the honey mustard was a nice addition. Mac and Cheese: definitely a must have! Very cheesy, pasta cooked to perfection, good portion size. Honey Butter Cornbread: the BEST. I have tried it multiple times in the south as Cornbread Souffle and I was THRILLED to know it is prepared the same. The flavor, consistency, and portions are top tier. Our table ordered two for the cause, pleasantly surprised and should remain a staple on the menu. We were pretty stuffed with the starters, but got meals to see what more Hunters had to offer. We then ordered the Shrimp and Grits, Chicken Wings and the Award Winning Gumbo. Shrimp and Grits: really good flavor concept. Loved the gouda grits and the shrimp was cooked perfectly. Chicken Wings: nothing to rave about. They are your typical bar wings with lackluster flavor. The dipping sauce was good. Gumbo: S A L T Y. The flavor and everything was there, but way too much salt. If they dialed back the salt im sure it'd be much more enjoyable. Food: 9:/10. Food alone would make me come back. Atmosphere: you can certainly see who this restaurant caters to... we got lots of weird stares. This is a SOUTHIE restaurant, the FOOD is just Southern. We also noticed the Chef/Owner went around to every table greeting the patrons and having small talk, but repeatedly skipped our table. Not a nod, "how was the food" nothing. We looked past the rather awkward environment and wanted to praise the Chef for the amazing food, but he never acknowledged us. It was enough for us to not want to return despite how good the food was. read more

For an appetizer we went with cornbread. OMG! This cornbread was everything and more. The cornbread was savory and sweet topped with a plentiful amount of butter! You must order this if you go here. For my meal I went with the smash burger. It had 2 patties with melty cheddar cheese, avocado, crispy onions and serrano aioli. The bun was perfect for this thick sandy. I came here for brunch on a Sunday morning with my friends. Despite being the first people to walk in the restaurant, we were seated in the corner right by the window, which we thought was slightly odd. Our waitress was attentive and nice. For drinks, we were all planning on getting hot coffee, but found out they don't offer it. Breakfast without coffee? Pass. We were slightly stumped when looking at the menus, since some of the items seemed misplaced within section headers. For example, Hunter's has a parfait on the brunch menu, but it's listed as an appetizer. In my opinion, a yogurt cup isn't something that you share with friends before you start the meal. It seems like they just needed to reprint the menus and reorganize the layout. I ordered the cornbread, and my friends had the ribs and the fried chicken Benedict. Everyone loved their food. The cornbread was served right out of a cast iron skillet-- it was piping hot! It was more like pudding than cake, but it was still great. The ambiance of the restaurant is really cool; country music playing through the speakers, taxidermy wall art, and rustic wood paneling all enhance the Southern vibe of the restaurant. I just feel like there's a few kinks that need to be worked out before I dine here again. read more

Hunter's Kitchen and Bar is a southern comfort restaurant in Southie. I came here with two friends on a Monday evening for dinner. None of us has been here, and was recommended to one of my friend by a coworker. For starters we got the fried pickles and the pastrami loaded fries. I got the shrimp and grits as my entree. My friend got the signature gumbo dish as her entree. The pastrami loaded fries and fried pickles are very heavy dishes, I would recommend getting either one or the other, unless if you have a decent party. Also to factor in that the entree portions here run on the larger side. Fried pickles were great. Pastrami loaded fries were alright, nothing too out of the ordinary. We ended up taking most of the fries and pickles home. The shrimp and grits was alright. The taste and flavor were there, but I would say it was definitely on the saltier side. I did not end up finishing up my dish. My friend had the Gumbo and that was also a bit saltier than what we both would've liked. Again, flavors were definitely there, just the saltiness overwhelms the entirety of the dish. Overall the entire meal was more on the saltier side. I wouldn't say I wouldn't return here, but maybe to try the drinks or other items on the menu. read more
