Hunter's was a nice experience. I would love to have given it 3.5 stars. The day we went they were short-staffed but the server, who was actually the bartender, handled it well. The location was nice. We found a park right across the street, directly in front of the restaurant. The ambience inside looked similar to a saloon with some of the drinks being served in mason jars. The food was okay. Nothing to write home about. I would come here again, though. I would just try different menu items. read more

My friend and I have been trying to get reservations here for months and finally was able to snag some last night. We had the wings and shrimp appetizer ( sooo good) the wings had so much flavor and cooked to perfection. Both had the gumbo which was absolute divineee. The place was quite good! There were quite a few things on the menu that look good and cocktails that looked delicious but was still recovering from the night before so had to stick to a mocktail and some appetizers. The mocktail was good but quite small for what seemed close to like ginger beer, some lime juice, and cranberry juice. We got three appetizers. The hush puppies were good, not dry and the sauce tasted alright but would have preferred a more savory sauce than an apple cinnamon honey type sauce. We liked the mac n cheese more. It was creamy and was good with the bread crumbs but maybe would have been good with some more cracked pepper or more Parmesan, just a little more flavor. The cornbread was on the same level of the Mac n cheese. It was quite moist and the peppers on them were quite spicy but were great in adding flavor to the corn bread. The service was quick and quite nice and the inside was had a nice ambience that was quite trendy and sorta of southern-esque. I would come here again to try a full brunch experience but just wouldn't get the hush puppies and would get a full cocktail. read more

I came here because reviews for soul Food looked really good, and when we arrived, it was packed with a bunch of 20 something years old and predominantly young ladies, who are all dressed up, looking good for the evening. The music was booming really loud and I was like OK I'm back in college now with a fake ID. I'm thinking the food better be good if I'm gonna lose my hearing. The soul food was surprisingly delicious! We had the wings, brisket, and the ribs and the side of collard greens mashed potato and cornbread were superb. The beignets were delightful too!. I mentioned to the servers about the music level and I said honestly if they just kept the music down from 630 pm to 8pm dining would be a more pleasant experience for me so my food could be properly digested.... my chair was vibrating with the base and I'm thinking who is this for the young 20 something years old who buy one drink at the bar and order one french fry for five girls to share? Here's a brutal truth if you want this place to be a go to place for food and drinks just keep the noise down pm on a Saturday till 8 pm, then raise the volume because honestly the food was exceptionally good and the sous chef Lambert is talented and seemed to be a nice guy. Yeehaw! This place is a great addition to the melting pot that is Southie. The place is small but I love the vintage farmhouse feel it has. The drinks are STRONG and the food is fantastic. I wish there were more "southern" restaurants like this in the area! My husband and I came here for brunch and the place was packed. We ordered the cornbread to start and it was to die for!! So creamy with real corn inside...now I don't want to have cornbread any other way. For my entree, I ordered the fried chicken sandwich. It was a large piece of popcorn chicken on a biscuit, which originally seemed like a small portion size but it was actually perfect. The honey mustard sauce made this sandwich!! It just complimented the chicken and biscuit so well. The home fries were probably some of the best I've ever had - they were oily without being greasy and crispy without being burnt. If you look on the outside it is a old whole in the wall but when you get inside say what it's a cool country feel a tavern but intimate. This place can get super crowded it's best to reserve for it's size. Window seating can get nippy in the winter. If eating at a busy time it can get loud and feel tight at the bar. The bar is hustlin' and bustlin'! One thing I can say though is that the food was on point and so were the drinks kudos to the chef and the bar! read more

You walk in from the city streets to a smoky mountain cabin that is somewhat comforting if you like 90's Shania. Greeted by the bartender who was also our server, she was very sweet and did what she could to appeal to my eating habits/dietary restrictions. My husband had the smash burger;I had the Cobb salad with the pulled chicken (no sauce). Most of the menu was either fried or loaded with bread. Please DO NOT COME HERE ! They only serve white people. This place is not even a high- end restaurant but the staff treat customers like garbage. Jenna is our server. She is extremely racist. You never thought 2023, racism doesn't exist. Well there is Hunter .Jenna not only ignored our table. We asked her questions, and she didn't even respond. She completely ruined my appertize. 5 minutes after the food came, I asked for empty boxes, she immediately came back with the bill while the rest of the party still eating. She never asked if we needed anything. She never delivered our silverware till we asked, she still didn't respond and just stared at us. So we literally stared at the food for 5 mins waiting for her to come back. I mean how desperate the owner is to have this kind of employee to work here. SUCH a huge fan of Hunter's! I went for dinner recently (after having only visited their bar in the past) and had such a great experience. Our server was highly attentive, kind and gave great recommendations - and the food was super speedy to come out! The ambiance is unique, with eclectic lodge decor - Southern comfort is the best way I can think to sum it up. Loved the country music playing while we dined there, and the kitchen was partially open so we could see dishes coming out one by one. My top 3 orders: Mac and cheese: I feel like you can't go wrong with mac and cheese, but sometimes you REALLY go right - and this was one of those times. With perfectly crispy breadcrumbs, al dente shells, gooey cheese, and whatever other magic they put in there - I couldn't recommend this any more. YUM!! Fried pickles: I am a fried pickle LOVER and these fully met (exceeded) my expectations! They came hot with a perfectly crispy exterior, and the salty taste wasn't the least bit overpowering. The dip perfectly complemented the pickles, as well. So good. Beignets: They didn't offer a dessert menu, but I'm SO glad I asked what their options were anyway! These beignets were to die for, although by the time we got to the dessert course we were on the verge of a food coma. Regardless, so worth it - the hot chocolate sauce poured on top of the powdered dough was delicious and just the sweet touch I needed to complete the amazing meal. My partner and I ordered popcorn chicken, mac & cheese, hot & messy fried chicken sandwich, and brisket sandwich, plus the Ruby Road cocktail and Bartender's Choice mocktail - TASTE: 3/5 - drinks were fantastic! Both the cocktail and mocktail were fun and super easy to drink. However, wish the food shone more. I expected more "szechuan and garlic chili crunch" flavor from the popcorn chicken, and wish the mac & cheese had a little something extra than the three types of cheese. I made reservations for my birthday celebration and I wasn't pleased by the service myself and my guests received! A red flag I ignored was all the odd requirements that frankly are obvious. The first being a $200 minimum. Obviously with 8 or more guests that will be met. The main one that I should've considered however was the $20 food minimum. Fast forward to the day of my birthday reservation I was running a little behind. I decided to call the restaurant and ensured them I was on my way. Not even 15 minutes later a friend of mine who already arrived said the manager was asking about myself and the other guests! I told him tell him we are in the neighborhood, but had a hard time finding parking! (Southie sucks when it comes to parking and majority of the side streets are reserved resident parking!) Not even 10 minutes later the manager whose name is Chris calls me! I said the same thing I previously mentioned to the employee and my friend! I don't understand why this man was being so pushy! I called the restaurant no one shouldn't even have asked my friend! I finally got parking & myself and everyone else were seated and given the time we had to order sooner since the kitchen was closing soon which was fine. We get our drinks and one of my friends drinks tasted like syrup! No grendadine or any of the other stated liquors was being tasted! We sent back that drink. Then our food arrived & I ordered the chicken breast that came with green beans, cranberries & pecans in a glazed served with mashed potatoes. I also decided to order a side of biscuits since I read reviews about how good they are. The food I ate was good, but I wouldn't say it met my expectations from the reviews I read. One my friend's however experience wasn't that great! The side of macaroni and cheese tasted nasty! It looked like it was going to taste delicious, but it didn't taste like macaroni and cheese at all. We then sent that back. The bill comes and it was way over $400! We found out they were trying to charge us from the drink and dish we sent back among some other odd pricing including the $20 food minimum per person! Come to find out that DIDN'T include drinks! So allegedly we were told they did some fees to compensate or something like that. We got those odd charges and returned items removed after more than five minutes. To top it off I didn't even get a Happy Birthday from the staff! Most places sing that to guests as we all know. The atmosphere was to loud and a little to dim for my liking. We had to speak loud just to talk! Honestly this gave off pub/bar vibes versus a restaurant with a bar. From the nagging from prior to my dinner till the end I am disappointed! Everything tastes like a salt lick, including the chocolate sauce for the beignets. I have eaten at Hunter's three times and each time the food has gotten progressively more apathetic. Salt seems to be the main ingredient in all the food. Not just slightly too salty, either. It tastes drowned in salt. Cobb salad had flaky sea salt on top that I could feel in my teeth. It was overpowering and uncomfortable to eat. It was missing some ingredients, too. Just seems like the excitement is gone from the kitchen. Apparently it is illegal to wave hello to your friends on the inside. Knocked on the window to wave to our friends and the bouncer said "nope you guys are gone" and would not let us inside. We really enjoyed our meal at Hunter's last week! To start, we had the biscuits, cornbread, sweet potatoes wedges and the popcorn chicken. The biscuits were the smallest dish but packed with flavor. I'll dream about those for a long time! The cornbread was a little bit under, but still very flavorful. For my main course, I split the spicy chicken and brisket sandwiches with a friend. I was skeptical when it came to the food here. All I've heard from here before was that it was a good vibe for the post-college 20 something's in Southie. Boy was i wrong. The food is delicious! I am recently gluten free () and I was nervous to go out and have very limited options. I got the bbq rice bowl and it was so good and HUGE. Seriously delicious. Came here with a party of 12 for a birthday dinner. For starters, it's not kid friendly AT ALL. It's crowded and unless you're at one of the few tables, you're nut to butt with the people around you. We had to yell to hear each other. Our fault, we didn't know it was more of a bar than a dine in establishment. Overall, this place was pretty good! Atmosphere 5/5 Cocktails 3/5 Apps 4/5 Mains 3/5 Dessert 4/5 Service 4/5 When you walk in, it feels like you're in someone's hunting lodge. The walls are covered with wood paneling and there are fun little "knick knacks" on the shelves decorating the restaurant. There is a fireplace that had a little fake fire going. Definitely a cozy atmosphere, which was probably my favorite part. The service was pretty good, but pretty slow for the size of the restaurant. The first waitress we had was a little cagey, but the second at shift change was very kind. I wish I remembered her name! In terms of cocktails, they were good. They had a decently sized cocktail menu, I tried the "Ruby Road". The strawberry flavor came across a little too sweet for me. I got the Virgin Mojito for my second drink and again, it was a little sweeter than I think Mojitos usually are. One of us got the "Ginger Snap" mocktail which was great, and the "Berry the Hatchet" was also good - the Ghost Tequila makes it spicy! As far as food goes, for apps we got the Fried Pickles and the Popcorn Chicken - both were good but nothing to write home about. The popcorn chicken has a Szechuan sauce which was pretty flavorless, but the chicken itself was nice and moist. For mains, I got the Peach and Burrata salad. The peaches were very fresh and the saltiness of the country ham was a nice combo. It was an interesting flavor profile but overall was very good. I also tried a bite of someone's "Brisket Sandwich" which was pretty spicy but tasty. We finished with some absolutely wonderful beignets and the s'mores pie. Overall, the food was good but I think there are better restaurants in the area. It's a great concept for a restaurant but I think the execution of the food could be done a little better. There's also a never ending flow of Southie "finance bros" chilling at the bar, and listening to their banter gets a little old, so keep that in mind lol. Great biscuits and sides. What's with the plastic like macaroni and cheese? They are un edible once they get cold, What with the humongous plate size? Choose quality over quantity please. There is no way that's real cheese on those macaroni and cheese plates because it becomes like a brick when it gets cold. So went here last night with my daughter and son. I cannot begin to tell you what a mind fuck this place is. It's a hopping bar packed to the brim with 20 somethings and perhaps the best southern inspired restaurant in New England. So the ONLY reason this place is not 5 stars is the seating. The table next to the fireplace is directly below a speaker that was booming (good music selection by the way) and the table wobbled. The drinks were well made and strong, prices for the cocktails was in the reasonable range. I had a whisky drink. We started with brisket sliders (our server warned us that they were small) and they were amazing two bite sliders. The brisket was the perfect combination of crust, fat and lean. Would order two orders for 3-4 people. We order the cornbread which was served in a cast iron baker with a gob of whipped butter. I make a really good cornbread but this was different level cookery right here. It was spectacular. Almost custard like in the center with corn kernels throughout. We also order the popcorn chicken (the amount of apps was my fault as I wanted to see what they did well). Simply put: I would run you over for another order of this chicken. I'm pissed that I didn't order the fried chicken. For entrees my kids had chicken sandwiches which were served on a potato roll. They loved them and raved about the flavor and texture of the potato salad. I had the best gumbo I've had since I was in NOLA. Spicy, full of seafood and sausage and okra. The roux was made expertly. The rice served on the side was also perfectly cooked and not all clumped together. Rice should not be an after thought and it isn't here. The service was a 6/10 Atmosphere 5/10 - definitely over capacity to the point where it was uncomfortable (our table of 6 was squished into a 4 top after waiting 30 minutes for the table) the 30 minutes waiting was tough because there was just no where to go inside due to so many people being there I will definitely be back though! PSA: So this review is not the restaurants fault but theres is just one thing that has made my girlfriends and I skeptical about going back. When we have gone on a typical afternoon the experience is great. Awesome staff and fantastic food. Yet annoyingly when there is live music there is a very vocal group of older male groupies that hang out by the singer. Now this would be fine except they get mad aggressive to the point of down right creepy with every female in the joint. Once rejected they tend to get almost territorial and make it uncomfortable. I've had quite a few female friends tell me they have also experienced this. Completely kills the vibe. It would be nice if they had a night with a female singer that attracted different followers / vibes and felt a bit safer. Now again, this is NOT the restaurants fault but something I'd be aware of when going out as a group of girls on the younger side. I'd recommend going early in the day/brunch. The mac and cheese is splendid when washed down with the Apres Ski Cocktail. read more
