Pulled pork platter with cowboy beans and potato salad.
Dave S.

This is basically set up as a food stand with outdoor seating. The food is fantastic and the service is great. If the weather is right, this is an ideal place to stop off for lunch. Enjoy it outside under the trees with the waterfront view

Staying overnight in the port district before catching a cruise. Walked to this place for dinner. It is outdoor seating and it was a bit chilly. Place was clean and had a large menu My husband loved his sandwich. Mine was ok.

I ordered food from Larry J's BBQ Cafe via an app, but then I realized it would be a while till I could sit down to eat, so I called in to see if they'd be willing to pack the fries separately in my Hillbilly Nacho appetizer (Fries, chili, pulled pork, cheese, jalapeno peppers) Half $7.95 before I headed on over. Larry J's is located in a building plopped in the middle of an urban greenspace with tables and chairs strewn about before it. You order at the window out front, and await your order by the window to the side where you may also claim some paper napkins and sauce packets if you wish. The fellow who took my call let me know in a reasonable manner that this request of mine took more time than they can normally extend to each order, but that it was no trouble this time. I appreciated that. Turns out they packed everything separately - the fries (as expected), the pulled pork in a pile, the chili in a soup cup, and the cheese in a sauce cup. Wow. I was imagining the pile of toppings layered up in a dish, with the fries separate. The pulled pork by itself was a bit dry in spots, but mingled with the chili, it was perfect. This was a nice mess of a dish once put back together. Their sweet potato fries $2.95 small from their Teasers menu was a goodly portion, all soft (no crisp) but full of nice sweet potato flavor.

Literally the best BBQ I've had here. So glad I found this place. The collared greens are to die for. They have a way bigger variety than a lot of other bbq places here. Burnt ends- yum. Loaded hot dogs- yum. The cat fish YUM Prices are pretty damn great for the seaport and for bbq- getting it at a place like sweet cheeks would be double the cost for half the taste.

Burnt ends. Different. A bit too much pepper
Glenn C.

Short takes: Would not recommend the burnt ends or mac. Brisket was OK. Nice location nearby a park. A large group of us ordered while in the area for a convention. I didn't look up the place prior so I went in open and ordered what I would usually get from a place such as this. The guy in front was nice and it appeared the workers liked being there. It took a while for the food. I personally got the Burnt Ends platter with mac and cheese/baked beans. Burnt ends were very different and not in a good way. The rub was heavier with a strong peppery (black peppercorn and something else) flavor and the fat wasn't as rendered as other places. I wouldn't mind this if it had better flavors but it was also very chewy and slightly dry. It was overall some small bits of meat on a very large piece of fat. The portion size was good though I wouldn't expect a smaller one for around 19 dollars. The mac was also different, also slightly dry. It could have used more cheese. The beans on other hand didn't have the issue of the mac/meat where they were almost too soft, lacking some texture. Sauce reminded me of a slightly stronger version of their BBQ sauce, a lot better than what they give out. I usually don't add BBQ sauce to good burnt ends or brisket but it was necessary to cut the pepper and heavy fat flavor. I found it alright though watery; definitely ketchup based. The meal was alright though I would not go back if I was around there. I also tried a bit of brisket from someone else which lacked a bit of smoke/texture but was overall fine. 2.3

BBQ Box Mac and Cheese

First of all, I'm from Texas so when the website mentioned Texas on there, I got a little excited. Let me tell you this is NOT Texas style bbq. I got the box combo and a side of Mac and cheese. The brisket was dry, the baked beans tasted like Bush's baked beans from the can and I cannot figure out their potato salad. The Mac and cheese was dry and hard but I think that's because of the bread crumbs. I ordered sliced bread on the side which I did not receive. Complimentary sliced bread on the side is traditionally served with Texas bbq. There was also no bbq sauce on the side (which should be automatically served with bbq right?). No extras were given such as onions, pickle slices or jalapeños either. I attached a picture of the meal that I received and the Texas style bbq I was expecting and that I'm used to.

Broken menu board and inaccurate pricing.
Jon C.

10/10 don't recommend. The owner was rude and not truthful about pricing. Half of the menu board is not working and the prices do not match posted website prices. Additionally his menu states a large soda is 2.50. He is out of cups and said he had cans instead. To my surprise after swiping my card, I am charged $3 each for a canned soda and more than advertised for each plate of food ordered. Sometimes you don't want to cause a scene. I'd much rather let people know about a poor experience and go my own way. Save yourself the time and go somewhere else.

Burnt Ends, Texas Chili, Coleslaw, & Macaroni and Cheese
Milan P.

I let them chose my sides because I couldn't decide. The coleslaw 10/10. Texas chili 10/10. Def my favorite parts of the meal. The burnt ends were really good I just tore the fat off, and I tried the brisket. I would get brisket next time. The Arkansas bbq sauce was so good. Anyways order the coleslaw and chili idc what else you get.

Pork Rib, Burnt Ends, Sweet Potato Fries, Macaroni and Cheese
Agnes L.

Had a great experience here with my gf, and Larry even came over to hang out with us for a while. The meats were awesome, will definitely be ordering the burnt ends again. The sweet potato fries and Mac and cheese were both 10/10. Can't wait to come back!!

a pulled pork sandwich and a drink

As someone else has pointed out, the food is the real deal. The owner is a bit brusque but he also has a soft side. If you can only get one thing make it the pulled pork sandwich. Amazing

I don't know what his deal was, but the guy berated me when I picked up my order from the window.

Pulled chicken sandwich was mostly dark meat. Sauce was good. Slaw was standard vinegar cabbage and dill seed. It was ok.

We got a table for two and we ordered a 3-BBQ meat and rice plate and a Beef Chow Fun. Both were ok. The size of the meat and rice plate was a bit smaller than Hong Kong eatery in my opinion. The beef chow fun was average, not too oily, not bad, but just average. The staff was busy but attentive. They do have a large selection of other authentic dishes like clay pots, crabs, fish, etc. Many people just come here for take out.

Convenient Chinatown main district location near the excellent bakeries next door I visit for Chinese pastries . I saw a picture of the meat combo of duck, char sue, pork belly, white rice, hot Vegetables. I ordered the combo, an appetizer of pan fried dumplings. Nice Asian restaurant environment, but not a spot to enjoy a lengthy dinner with soothing music ambience or sipping hot tea... a busy no nonsense kitchen type eating place with yelling, bone chopping. The hanging appetizing cooked ducks, pork, chicken creates the vibe of a China town experience. Quick service, nice hot tea in kettle offering. The combo meat platter was cold slices of meat , rice a bit cold too. Vegetables fresh, hot but needed more . The duck meat was boney and not much duck meat or select pieces. Char sui was salty , few pieces. The pork belly was very good and needed more. I didn't compare my combo picture with the one I saw from 1 year ago and mine looks 1/2 the quantity of meat and vegetable.. the pic last year displays beefy pieces vs. my meat that looks like my animals are starved before preparing for my plating. I understand inflation reduced portions , but I would rather have last year's picture at a higher price. The pan fried dumplings not impressed as had much better elsewhere. These were too doughy and not a nice flavor or texture. I didn't see anything to be impressed with my dining outing and nothing to be offended by with either except boney malnourished duck pieces of cold meat . Other noodle dishes, rice dishes I saw other diners order were fresh hot and definitely appealing, abundant and worthy to try. Maybe the combo was a bad choice and a just a hot duck dish may have been better option here... clearly the hanging food was freshly prepared. Prices were fair , my waitress , server very pleasant , clean restaurant and no issues with that. I might look to try the hot duck at the other locations with a bit better expectations for ambiance and conversational luncheon environment. The baked egg custard pastry, creme coffee sponge cakes after for desert were excellent from bakery down the street.

They were fresh and tasty. I also got a general gau chicken which I know is more Americanized Chinese food but got it since it was offered as a plate with rice. First of all, the arrangement they had for queueing for tables was a bit confusing and unclear. We were given a slip of a paper with a number on it, which the hostess eventually called out after about 10 minutes. I wish they had a more seamless system for handling this (in an app or taking phone numbers instead). We ordered lots of dishes to share.. pineapple buns with roast pork, the viral crab rangoon scallion pancake, soup dumplings, rice rolls with ribs, etc. The standout for me was definitely the crab rangoon scallion pancakes. I 100% get the hype! It's ooey and gooey and perfect for any crab rangoon lover. I was however pretty disappointed in the pineapple buns (one of my favorite dishes) and soup dumplings, which honestly just tasted like they were frozen and reheated from the grocery store. The service was also very absent and it took awhile for us to wave someone down so we could pay our bill. Not sure if we visited on an off day or something, but I wasn't very impressed.
