The food was pretty solid bbq, but with these complaints: - The service was pretty slow. The owner/manager was busy yelling at an employee. This is always a turn-off. He appeared to be understaffed with a long line forming at noon. He should be ready for the lunch crowd. - I got a pulled pork sandwich and asked to add North Carolina sauce (which I was charged for). I walked back to the office, opened the sandwich and there was no sauce. Again, the sandwich was pretty good, but they failed to put the sauce on it. - There was some strong spice (must be part of his rub) that I got a little too much of in my last couple bites. It took over the entire experience. I won't go back. After reading other reviews... I should also add this: Dear Owner: Take a hint! If a whole bunch of people find you to be rude, you ARE rude. If you like to spend your money on mediocre food and RUDE service, this is the place for you. The setting is ideal, and my hope is that a better establishment will open there. I work in the seaport and was tired of the LTK and Jerry Remy's lunch scene. I ordered the Texas-style pulled pork sandwich and was impressed. For $10 I had a large sandwich, side of cole slaw and bottle of water. The sandwich was good, filled me up and the sauce was tasty. There's no inside seating, just the South Boston Maritime Park. But with water views and plenty of patio tables shaded with trees, this is the perfect spot for a laid-back southern-style summer lunch. There aren't too many good BBQ places in Boston, but I'd definitely recommend Larry J's to someone looking for a quick and easy lunch. Other reviews mentioned long wait times. I didn't experience this at all. I went at 12pm in June and by the time I had signed my credit card slip, my food was ready. Everyone working there was super friendly and smiling, which is always nice to experience. This place is across the street from my office and we all know not to go. The owner is incredibly rude. The one time I did go, I asked for his recommendation since it was my first time and he said "look there's customers in line, order or leave" so I quickly ordered the chicken sandwich. 'Meh' sums it up. Larry seems to put in a lot of love and care into the BBQ. I could tell because I had to earn my choice of sauce by describing and proving to Larry that I know what the sauce tastes like. Yeah, Larry isn't the typical 'friendly' owner, but I could relate to his personality so it doesn't bother me as much. The BBQ itself is really just mediocre. Everything's on the plainer side, which is a fine style of BBQ, but...no smoke rings or smoky taste... I tried most of the popular items - burnt ends, ribs, brisket, pulled pork, and fires. So I really wanted to love this place! It's about a 5 minute or less walk from my work and bonus when the weather is nice you can sit outside and eat. Like I said I WANTED to love this place, the owner is probably one of the RUDEST people I've ever had to deal with! Any questions that were asked were met with a rude snide comment! Literally we asked a question and his response was "that's what the menu says isn't it?!" I was so taken back by his response especially considering it was our first time there. We then decided to avoid dealing with him since the food was ok and we ordered through caviar. We called the place to confirm our order and they told us "we don't deliver and that app doesn't work" as we prepared to order elsewhere our order showed up! I'm a fan of BBQ and this place definitely tickled my fancy. I had the brisket sandwich with a side of collard greens. The brisket was juicy with a nice hint of smoke flavor. The BBQ sauce was sweet with a little bit of tang. The collard greens were good with a tiny bit of heat in them. The location is great with all of the outdoor seating. This is a great place with too much business. Which is a good and bad thing, when you are hungry. I have to say the food is excellent. I love the fried pickles. Overpriced for what you get. Spent $14 on a brisket sandwich, side of sweet yams (sandwich does not bring a side or a drink) and a lemonade. The place is in a park area, where its nice to sit and listen to the music being played by a one man show but due to the music we could not hear the orders being called out, which then led to one of the employees to be rude to us for not having listened when the orders were being called. Not returning again. Customer Service is what makes me spend money at a place and this man was just rude. I am pretty sure he is either the manager or the owner. Well from earlier reviews I had high hopes I would be able to get some good bar b Que in between all the great seafood we were going to have in Boston. Was not to be. Omg OMG OOOMMMGGGGGG ...... I found the best food in Boston. I have been wanting a Turkey leg forever.... the leg that kicks you right and I found it at Larry J's. Hinding in a little area in seaport of Boston this place this wonderful place is here. They also have a food truck that delivers. I've never written a negative review in my life, but I checked on yelp to make sure it wasn't just me. The owner was more then rude to me, i announced I was there for pickup and what I ordered very politely. Apparently I didn't announce the order the way he wanted it. It turned into a very awkward situation were he stared me down and then spoke to me like I was dumb to which I didn't back down. I don't know if it's because it's in a touristy part of town he thinks he can get away with talking to people like that, but I was having no part of it. The food is awesome! I live next door, so it's very easy to pop in and pick up dinner on the way home from work. I've had two styles of pulled pork (both equally amazing), ribs and various sides. 2/24/17 the weather is amazing, walked the harbor side and did not find a restaurant that was reasonably price by the water. So with 6 kids n 3 adults, for $100 including tip, we had the best BBQ!! Been looking for some good BBQ and had a $10 promo code with UberEats. Got a brisket & pulled pork platter with Mac & cheese and collards . The bark on the brisket was so on point and the fat melted. Pulled pork was good and still had some heft to it, opposed to some places where it's reduced to mush. Collards on their own had a good vinegar bite but were too salty, but the fat from the brisket cut through that salt very well. Mac wasnt bad but I prefer it creamier. A little disappointed that I didn't get cornbread with my platter though, I expected it to come with the order. The sauce that came with it was nice too. I didn't specify which I wanted so it was whatever the standard is. I'll have to try their other sauce options. Im definitely coming back to try the burnt ends. If only they could come in a combo platter. I'd be very broke and very fat. A lot of reviews here speak negatively of the owner. Since I ordered online I didn't interact with him, but he replies to feedback on here and seems very warm and willing to rectify the criticisms, and that shows that they may be overreacting. read more

I've been working in the Seaport District and literally just had this gem earlier today and boy am I glad that I did! Our work has catered lunches twice a month and HR picked this as the spot this time. The food arrived on time and everyone's order came as requested. Larry and one of his workers came and handed them out one by one to everyone in our office (70+ people)! They even stuck around to make sure that everyone got their correct food and was happy with them. When they found out that someone stole someone elses food (what can I say its an office), Larry actually went back to the stand - picked up a giant container of BBQ sauce and got my co-worker a meal that was missing. Great find for good 'cue if you find yourself at the nearby Convention Center or down around the Fish Pier for any reason. I had some of the best fried pickles and definitely the very best burnt ends I've ever sampled after stumbling upon this place. Great salesmanship! Sorry to say worst barbecue I've had. Seasoning on the ribs terrible. Barbecue sauce tasted watery. Macaroni and cheese looked and tasted old. Couldn't taste the cheese could barely see any cheese. No rib tips available. The smoked turkey leg was ok had a great smell. How did I not find this place sooner? On a nice day in southie/seaport, your options for quick casual food include tasty burger, some pizza places, food truck or tent at Lawn on D, and yankee lobster if and only if there isn't a cruise ship in town. Beyond that, your sitting down and shelling out some decent money but now I realize that Larry Js has come to my rescue. The prices are reasonable, the service prompt, and my pulled pork sandwhich with texas sauce was perfect. The pork was lean and moist and the sauce had great flavor and was just the right amount that it didn't drown the meat. Though i didn't try anything else (yet) the pulled pork was better than redbones or blue ribbon bbq, and there obviously aren't any bbq options in the area so the convenience factor is big for me too. Is it the best bbq i've ever had? No, but thats reserved for hole in the wall places in mephis and mississippi (like E&L outside Jackson, MS).
