I ordered a 3 item BBQ plate for $16 (the 1 item plate is $12 and 2 item plate is $14) and opted for char siu, roast duck, and soy sauce chicken. I paid at the counter and received my take out box after about 5 minutes. This proved a filling portion size - 4 pieces of duck, 4 pieces of chicken, more than a dozen smaller chair siu pieces, 2 pieces of bok choy, and ample rice. The butcher did not cheap out and give out bony pieces of duck. The duck was was overly soy sauced and the skin not fatty. The chicken and chair siu remained juicy. I don't know if the restaurant has take-out service for dinner, and also don't know why they call themselves Shoyu when they don't serve Japanese food. The paper menu lists the BBQ rice plate, but I can't remember if it enumerates the various protein options. A piece of cardboard next to the cash register has the options written in Mandarin w/o any English translation (on brand for this sort of establishment).

It was 10:30pm so my options were limited, decided to give Jade Garden a try. Ordered a wonton noodle soup. Now, I did not expect it to be as good or authentic as Sam Woo in Alhambra CA or Mike's in Seattle Chinatown. But what was served was a complete travesty of this classic HK staple. The broth had no flavor (adding white pepper didn't help much); the wontons were sad-looking, had no shrimp inside and the 'mystery meat' tasted mushy like it was about to give me food poisoning so I spit it out. The manager insisted the wontons were "freshly made" and walked away but I knew better, so I asked another waiter to sent it back. New dish = Fish fillet with vegs rice plate. The fish was fine, but the vegs were undercooked (onion almost completely raw) and there was very little sauce on the rice. Another fail. Maybe it's not their regular chef for the late night shift, but I probably won't be back. As with most U.S. Chinatowns, the best Chinese food is found in nearby suburbs and neighborhoods (such as the fine Shanghainese restaurant JiangNan by the Boston Common.)

A spectacular dish if you like sweet and sour, and a good one even if you don't. -- Sautéed Pork Belly with Hot Pepper: Firm slices of pork with so little fat you can eat the whole thing without inspection. The hot peppers weren't so hot, so while this was enjoyable as a simple pork and vegetable dish, it had no spicy flavor pizzaz suggested in the name and evident in similar examples elsewhere. On the other hand, it did have pleasant black bean flavor. -- Sautéed Shredded Beef With Long Horn Pepper: Numerous slivers of tender beef with more of an understated thin gravy than sauce, with the peppers crisp but not that peppery. Mild but substantial. Everything was nicely presented and I appreciate the scallion ginger sauce on the chicken and the flavorful duck sauce drizzled over half of the rice. char siu was quite fatty but juicy. I would probably request dark meat for the chicken. The rice noodle rolls had the perfect chew and a silky smooth texture. My only small complaint was that they were a little skimpy on the shrimp as most of the rolls were just plain rice rolls. I also tried the wonton noodles. The noodles weren't soggy and the broth was flavorful. The wontons filling were mostly meat, though, so they weren't quite as bouncy as I prefer. I will definitely be back to try more dishes.
