The food tasted fantastic and the combos were amazing value but there are some negatives that need to be addressed. Food: We ordered two combos that left us super full and with leftovers. Our favorite were the tangsuyuk and the soondubu. The pork was super crispy and the dipping sauce was refreshingly tangy. The soondubu had a great heat that was flavorful but passed quickly so you could enjoy sweating too much. Service: Our waiter was pleasant but with the dining area pretty empty more frequent check-ins would be appreciated. Atmosphere: The interior was clean but I would describe the decor as nondescript Asian. Our primary complaint was definitely a fruit fly that kept buzzing around us. Terrible service, don't go! I ordered spicy seafood noodles on takeout app. For which the suggested wait time was 10 minutes. They gave me the wrong food after around 20 minutes, and refused to make the correction. I had to contact the customer service to cancel my order after 30 more minutes. Also, as a Korean restaurant the staffs there are non-Asian and have very limited English level. I wonder if they have the basic ability to read the English translations for Asian dishes and get to know customers' needs, especially for online orders. Underwhelmed by the jjajangmyun, especially based on the very positive reviews of it, but perhaps I caught them on an off-day. The noodles were cold and had minimal bounciness. Microwaving the noodles killed the ghost of any bouncy texture that might have lingered. The sauce was hot and very flavorful, though. I had plan to order two full orders, but to my surprise, they had a combo of exactly what I wanted to order. Super local Korean spot that's been OG of union square for years. It's been a very long time since I've been at this joint and it does not disappoint. We were able to grab a table for two on a random Tuesday evening and were able to order quickly. Always quality and tasty Korean food every time I come. They recently changed management so they have an amazing deal for jajangmyun and jambong for half off! Both noodle dishes are so delicious! The noodles are perfectly cooked and chewy. The portion is generous, the flavor and sauce/broth is all on point. I've also tried the tofu soup, tangsuyook beef and ganpoong shrimp. The ganpoong is tangy, sweet and a little spicy. So good! Portions are large and definitely shareable. All highly recommend! The only downside is the location. My friend and I came around 6h30 on a Saturday. They were very empty at the time but were slightly busier by the time we left. We ordered the jjajangmyeon, the topokki , and the kimchi jjigae. Jjajangmyeon was great - a rather large portion size actually- and the noodles and sauce were so delicious. I will note that there is barely any pork in the sauce though - it is mostly onions. The topokki was good - extremely spicy with a crazy amount of the pepper powder. Kimchi jjigae was also really yummy too - surprisingly less spicy that the topokki, with very well cooked and generous portions of cabbage, pork, tofu, and rice cakes. Price point was also surprisingly low too (especially in this economy?!) Overall super happy with my visit; I had high expectations since I love Chinese Korean food, and fortunately they exceeded all of them! This is the first place where they served half/half option for jjajangmyun and jjambbong like they usually do back home in Korea. I appreciated the option for that because I love both and I would always have to choose! The ttangsuyuk was also pretty good and they gave a good amount too (we already ate a few before taking the pic). Why did I not come here sooner?! Off to the side of charming Union Square, Buk Kyung is doing its best to stand out amongst the crowd but falls a bit short with the outside decor. However, don't be discouraged, grab that door handle (they provide free parking permits if you want to take your car and park to the side of the restaurant, adjacent to the Axe throwing place) and pop in. The inside is casual, and the atmosphere is typical of an unassuming family-owned restaurants: older guys hanging out, handful of younger, clearly sons or cousins of the older men, milling around and working the tables. The menu boasts pretty much anything you want in the Korean food group. My husband and I have been wanting dolsot bibimbap for a long time so we ordered that, and an appetizer of scallion pancake. We were offered two courses of kimchi in two ways (daikon and the traditional napa cabbage). Getting our food was a pretty quick process, getting our checks afterwards took quite a bit longer but it was also kind of nice to be sitting there in a sort of quietish, chill vibe of the restaurant-- it almost felt like hanging out at your Korean uncle's house. I was longing for some dolsot bibimbap and started looking for a Korean restaurant that wasn't some sort of "fusion" place. Enter: Buk Kyung. When I walked in, there was a small group of older Korean people watching TV in the shop with the host. They weren't eating or anything, so I think they were just hanging out (this was a good sign as it reminded me of one of my favorite restaurants in my neighborhood when I lived in Korea). The host quickly greeted me and, after scanning the menu, I ordered the vegetable mandu and dolsot bibimbap. Not much time passed before the dishes were delivered. The mandu were less crispy than I would prefer, but still traditional and totally fine. As usual, I lathered the dolsot bibimbap in gochujang and fried the egg right in the bowl. Mmm! It's a small and quiet family run place that offers a variety of Korean dishes. We got a bunch of the Korean-Chinese items to share and were relatively satisfied. The highlight was definitely the tangsuyuk- sweet and sour pork. After trying the chicken version, we all agreed that pork is definitely better. The jajangmyun had chewy noodles and a good sauce but it was just ok. We were happy with the service we got and the variety the menu had to cater to everyone's different tastes. read more

Buk Kyung redemption arc!! I came here and there was no customers there, but it was at a weird in-between time so we felt pretty safe even though there was no outdoor seating. We were asked if we wanted tea or water- we asked for tea but it tasted like they just gave us hot water. Also some of the staffs had their masks below their nose. They brought banchan- most were fine but the bean sprouts just tasted kind of wet and unseasoned. We ordered jajangmyeon (black bean noodles) and tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork), but our expectations were low. But when the food came out it completely turned everything around. I usually think black bean noodles and just ok but these were the best I've ever had! They were soooo delicious- savory and subtly sweet. We were recently inspired to try this place on its reopening. The food was authentic and reminded us of home cooking. Of all the dishes we tried, the tangsuyook stood out as a standout favorite. The crispy and tender pieces of pork were perfectly complemented by the sweet and tangy sauce, which had just the right balance of flavors. We also had the jjajangmyun, which was on sale. It sounds weird for a restaurant to have items on sale, but it's more to try to get people in the door. Notably, I think this restaurant shies away from using a ton of salt. The food here was noticeably less salty than other Korean places we've been to. If you have a heavier palette, you may enjoy the food here less. Overall, it's not really instagram story food, but if you want a great meal in a low-key place, this is a great choice. Also, parking is onsite and next to the axe throwing club. Buk Kyung is a Korean restaurant located in Somerville, MA. There is metered street parking in front of the restaurant as well as across the street. There is also an adjacent lot to the right side of the storefront as well. There are three must order items in my opinion. First and foremost, the tangsuyook, which is a deep fried battered pork strips. This is a definite must share item for a large group. The large order is ginormous. It comes with a sweet and sour dipping sauce that you can drizzle on top of leave on the side as a dipping sauce. If you're in a small group of two or even three, a small would do. Goes well with a nice cold beer and they offer quite a variety. Second, I recommend ordering the samsum ganjajang. This is their black bean stir fried vegetables (loaded with cabbage and onions) and seafood with the noodle served on the side. This is my go to place whenever I crave black bean noodle. To enjoy, you mix into the noodle the black bean sauce and eat it while it is warm. The black bean sauce is very rich and slightly sweet combined with the slightly thick and chewy noodle is in my opinion heaven. I would also say this is a good dish to share since the denseness and richness can be a bit much after several bites in. The third must try item is the seafood soft tofu chigae. This is by far their tastiest soup and I have tried three others which I don't recommend and will explain why later. The soft tofu soup is spicy, salty, and seafoody. The broth is the most flavorful in my opinion. Out of all their soups and stew, I feel this is their best. I have also tried the kimchi chigae which I found to not be as good as other Korean restaurants we have been to. Not sour and salty enough. The mandoo soup, which is a vegetable soup with dumpling and rice cake, I find to be rather bland since it is a vegetable broth. I also tried their yuk gae jang, which is a shredded beef, egg, and vegetables soup in a spicy beef broth with noodles. This noodle soup is only okay. I wouldn't order it again. I didn't quite enjoy the vegetables in this soup. I also don't recommend the tofu kimchi jeyook. I have had it at other restaurants and this restaurant version I am sorry to say didn't taste all that good. I wonder if it had to do with the kimchi used. We ordered the tangsooyuk and jajangmyun which were alright but the service was pretty poor. We asked for side dishes which usually come with the order but never received it and we were pretty persistent with asking. I think we asked a total of 4 times but it was near the end of our meal and we didn't want to keep bothering the staff. Also there were other tables complaining about not receiving banchan (side dishes) so maybe they ran out? The food was a bit cold and it was clear it wasn't prepared fresh. My wife had a craving for jajangmeun and this place hit the spot! The portions are pretty big for the price and the flavor is deep. If you're used to regular jajangmeun then this might disappoint, since its Korean-Chinese fusion. Philip showed us Tang suyook and it was incredible, a great twist on what it usually is by incorporating jalapenos and apparently using very high heat. I've only had a couple of their menu items. My favorite is the seafood soft tofu stew. It's such a good, flavorful broth and slightly spicy. I would prefer slightly more spicy but it's good and a HUGE portion. You also get a ton of seafood in here for just $12.99. There are shrimp, octopus, clams, squid.The bibimbap is pretty meh. It's good because it's bibimbap and that's always delicious but I've definitely had better ones in Boston. The service is pretty nice as well. I ordered take out once and realized that they didn't pack my rice. When I called and told them, one of the staff came to deliver rice within 5 mins. It still tasted a bit one note - the base sweetness of the jajangmyeon sauce is still present. I think Seoul Jangteo is notably better. My SO didn't want Korean Chinese so I ordered the Bi Bim Bop and totally missed the fact that it's not served with rice. You must order Dolsot Bi Bim Bop if you want your veggies and egg on rice. So sadly, I lost girlfriend points for ordering the wrong thing and we probably won't get takeout from here again. read more
