This was my first time trying KBBQ in Boston in probably 10 years or so. Based off of the photos, branding and ambience, I was expecting a somewhat upscale experience. While I appreciated small touches with being able to put your jackets in a plastic bag under your seat, everything else fell a bit short. The quality of the meats and produce was a bit disappointing. The onion our server used to flavor and start our grill with looked dry, the pumpkin seemed to have a bit of frost as though it were frozen, and the overall quality of the meat was a bit lackluster. Even towards the end of our meal, even when our server told us the meat was ready, a couple of pieces were still raw. The banchan was not bad and the bibim naengmyeon we had was probably the best part of our meal. Sadly I don't think we'll be back based on our experience. read more

Overall just weird and negative experience. I had heard great things about the restaurant, but as soon as we came in, it instantly felt off. The restaurant was empty, the music was weirdly loud, and as soon as we were seated the waitress was so unwelcoming. She stood over us silently as some of us looked at the menu. One person couldn't get the QR to work so we asked for a physical menu, and the waitress just grabbed the phone and forced the QR code to work. She kept standing there silently until we said we needed a few minutes to order/be ready. We then eventually got a new waiter, who was fine. Friendly enough, just an average experience. I also asked for the music to be turned down multiple times because it was literally causing the seat and floor to vibrate, but every other song just seemed to go back to its original volume. So weird. As for the food, we got the beef combo. Most of the cuts were not marinated, so it was pretty bland even with the side sauces. I was very excited to hear about a new Korean BBQ restaurant opening in Boston! I heard great things about Naksan prior to my first visit and it did not disappoint. You can place your belongings (coats, bags) inside the seats so they don't smell like BBQ. They have the vents above the grill at each table which is always great at BBQ spots. Food: I have no complaints 5/5. Beef tartare was fresh, I love beef tartare served with Korean pears, everything mixed well with the egg yolk. For my first visit, between three people, we were full with the small beef combo and an extra order of boneless short ribs. One of the memorable items that I tried was Korean style potato pancake with cheese; we literally ordered a second one. It was crispy on the outside, chewy on the inside, dipped in a honey dipping sauce. They do provide side dishes; I wish they had pickled radish and potato salad banchan. Service: The staff will grill your meat for you. I did not feel rushed with my meal at all, the server would give us time to enjoy the meat in between each cut. Some restaurants would start grilling portions after portions and that doesn't leave enough time to socialize/enjoy the meal without the meat becoming cold. Overall, the restaurant felt welcoming and clean. During another visit, we had a party of over 20 people and we were able to reserve a time by calling ahead. We were split among 4 different round tables, which was fine because that gave us enough room at each table. This restaurant is on the pricier side, however, I think it's the best Boston has to offer at the moment. There's valet or you can try to find street parking, I've never had a difficult time finding a spot, even during the snowy winter. The egg soufflé that comes with it is amazing!!! I personally like coming here with a bigger group because a large combo comes with so much more variety. There are a good amount of alcohol options too. The variety gives it a fun and more exciting steakhouse experience. The grill here is charcoal so it adds to the taste. It's my preference to eat any and all bbq over charcoal. You can also make a reservation over yelp now so you can avoid the lines. The cold noodles, kimchi stew, and soybean soup are some of the most underrated items on the menu. It's also fun to see the staff shake the traditional lunch box for you. One thing to note though is if you do have a reservation they are very strict here about their time. 8:30pm reservation is 8:30pm and they cannot take you any earlier. We tried to come in around 7:30pm because our plans allowed us to be at the restaurant sooner than we thought and they told us to come back at 8:30pm. Horrible service. The food was okay (three of us spent over $240, so it really should have been better than just "okay"), our server was nice, but the host at the front desk was incredibly rude. Two friends (A and B) and I chose this place mainly because of its location. I was visiting from the West Coast, so this dinner was supposed to be special for us. We originally planned to have dinner from 5:30-7:30. That day, A suddenly had to leave by 7, and B ended up arriving late at 6 because a huge tree fell in her yard due to strong wind that day. The plan was simple: A and I would start eating at 5:30, and B would join when she arrived. I got there at 5:25, right after the restaurant opened. The dining room was completely empty. When the host asked how many people, I said three. He told me everyone had to be present to be seated and made me wait outside. It was a rainy, cold, and very windy December night. When A arrived at 5:30, we went back in and explained the situation. The restaurant was still empty, but the host refused again and told us to wait outside. When I asked why, he just said, "It's the rule." No explanation, no apology, nothing. Just rude and rigid. We had already taken a 30-minute Uber, B was already on her way, and it was raining, so we had no choice but to stand outside and wait. We were finally seated at 6 when B arrived. By then, A barely had time to eat and couldn't enjoy the expensive BBQ. B felt terrible for being late, even though it was completely out of her control. What should have been a meaningful reunion was ruined by the host's behavior. The restaurant stayed at least half empty the entire time we were there, which says a lot. We visited on a weekday evening, and although it was pretty crowded, we were seated within a reasonable time. Our waiter was very helpful, explaining the menu options and even recommending some dishes to try. The Korean BBQ was fantastic. The staff started cooking the meat for us, but we took over since we're used to doing it ourselves. They still kept an eye on the grill to ensure nothing was overcooked. The meat was tender, juicy, and paired perfectly with the dipping sauces. We also tried the seafood pancake, kimchi stew, and cold noodles. I don't usually enjoy cold noodle broth, but this one was particularly good. The service was top-notch. We were celebrating a birthday, and the staff surprised us with a complimentary Soju. The grill works with charcoal, is both electric like in other Korean BBQ places, which is great and gives the meat a nice flavor. All banchan plates were really good in flavor as well, the stew was a "finally a good one!" moment for me, after been served what tasted like colored water with some salt and cabbage in other places this one took the prize. The egg soufflé was great too, nice flavor and great size. We barely finished (2 people that eat a lot), so maybe this combo would be great for 3 people. Service was 10/10, from the person that picks up the phone, to the one that greets you to the server, super attentive and they kept making sure we had enough banchan at all times on our table. The greatest thing for me was the great extractors they use. In all the previous ones I had visited their extractors sucked! You get smoke all over your face, your hair, your clothes, your thoughts, everywhere! Here they have very good quality ones, my fresh washed hair appreciated it and it helped us enjoy our meal way more than in the other places.
