We got the jampong and the dok bokki. It came with some sides. The jampong was very very seafoody, and I liked it a lot. It came with a lot of noodles, but the shrimp was very small and not a ton of seafood. But it tasted good and was spicy. The dokbokki was good, it was a bit on the sweet side. Buk Kyung is the reason behind my newfound love for Korean food. I've been meaning to review it as my love for Korean food has grown from minor to massive. Their tangsuyuk is massive and oh-so tasty-- I can taste it if I close my eyes and focus hard enough! Their jajangmyeon is standard, pretty good but you can probably get the same thing elsewhere. However what's nice about theirs is that it doesn't taste bad as leftovers. I've had others that tasted weird the next day, but I was fine with this one. Hooray! The place was quite clean and large, and lots of Asians and non-Asians gathering inside. However, it's nice when you see actual Koreans eating at a Korean restaurant, because then you know the food there is up to par and good enough for those people. The staff was very kind and I felt very welcomed. The area isn't exactly great and it's a little difficult for uber/lyft drivers to navigate properly so we ended up running across the street to get from our lyft to the restaurant and back, but that's okay! Overall it was a really great experience. I'm so glad my friend took me here for my first Korean food experience! read more

This is one of the better Korean restaurants I've been to in Boston! They are known for their jajangmyun, jampong, bibimbap, and sweet and sour pork. We opted for the first two, and you will NOT BE DISAPPOINTED! The only other time I've ordered jajangmyun in Boston is at the Korean joint in the super88 food court, and I was pretty disappointed and discouraged to order it again.. BUT after Buk Kyung, my spirits have been revived! I devoured this chewy noodle goodness (ok, maybe not all of it.. we shared it 4-ways. It's a realllly big bowl!!). But seriously. I love the texture of the noodles and the sauce is flavored well! Pork, zucchini, and potatoes! Don't let the black sauce scare you. You must try this.NOW Jampong is a spicy seafood noodle soup. Pretty sure they use the same perfect noodles as the jajangmyun. We ordered the one with extra seafood because we were splitting this 4 ways again. Definitely enough noodles and seafood, but don't expect too much variety. It's mostly squid, onions, zucchini, and those baby frozen shrimps. Also, the broth is prettyy spicy! We also ordered the seafood pancake- a little on the thicker side, so it was a bit mushy towards the middle. Comes with 8 pieces total This was more than enough for the 4 of us. I'd come back just for the jajangmyun.. can you tell I'm a little obsessed? Probably because I haven't had it in so long and gave up looking for a good place after my disappointing experience before. Buk Kyung to the rescue :p Only gripe? There's only 2 people working, and they tend to leave the tables filled with dishes until people walk in and need to be seated.. On a recent visit, I ordered the udon soup, which was rather flavorless - although I keep a vegetarian diet, I made an exception on this cold night for what I expected would be a hearty soup. But the shrimp were tiny and not even worth it, and if there was any flavor, it was the single flavor of noodles. My companion ordered the jjajjangmyeon, which exhibited a uniquely high proportion of onions to sauce compared to every other rendition I have seen. Needless to say, she was not a huge fan. The kimchi pajeon to start was not bad, although it could have been crispier. Despite my grievances, the food is not the worst, and its at least nice to have an option for Korean-Chinese food in the area read more

I'm sorry but this was the worst Korean food I've ever had in my life :( everything was either SO bland or very very salty. No one in our group ate any of their food. Jajangmyeon was inedible. Food and service wasn't the same since last visit. Came into town and was looking to forward to great meal but unfortunately the opposite.

I picked up take-out for us and our neighbors yesterday, a gross rainy day. The dishes were ready in only 15 minutes, and were PIPING hot. Here's what we ordered: A10 - cheese ddok bokghi S1 - tofu kimichi jeyook F2 - beef bokumbop A1 - goon mandoo What I ate, the Cheese Ddok Bokghi, was very good. A spicy tomato based sauce with chewy rice noodles and melted cheese on top. My neighbors LOVED their tofu and beef dishes, though said the mandoo didn't travel as well as the other items. If you're looking for well-priced Korean dishes, this is your place. read more

Not a lot of things has been bringing me much joy ever since the pandemic crisis, but today was a good day thanks to Buk Gyung. I studied abroad in Seoul for several years and Korean Chinese food was always a popular go to. The classic combination to order would be jjajangmyeon, jjambong, and tangsuyuk(sweet and sour pork) or gganpoongki(spicy fried chicken). Tried a couple of places around the Boston area, but tbh none of them were that satisfying. It was my first time ordering from here today and wow!!!! Got two jjajangmyeons and one tangsuyuk. They were both extremely delicious. The amount of both the noodles and the meat dish were more than enough for two people. The sauce for the noodles isn't heavy or goopy - it's got a savory sweetness that makes each bite pleasant. The pork has just the right batter and crunch. The sweet and sour sauce is pretty tangy (almost vinegar like tanginess?). If you're into sweeter tanginess like pineapple tanginess this might not be your favorite, but in any case, it's a damn good dish. You have to call the restaurant directly to order your food. The person who took my order and the delivery man were so nice. I definitely plan to order again. read more

Best bi bim bap! Went for early-ish dinner to celebrate Chuseok and was so surprised there was only one other family there! Portions are huge! The half japchae and rice was huge! Dolsot bi bim bop (hot) was SOOO good! Love how the rice gets crispy with the egg and all the yummy veggies and marinated beef in the stone bowl. I could have eaten two bowls! Oink! I came here with a party of 17 on a Thursday night and the staff was very accommodating! Luckily someone from our party knew what to order. We got a big chicken plate that was amazing and filling! I was told that it was the Chinese infused Korean food. It tasted similar to orange chicken. read more

This place was alright. Cheaper than most other Korean food places in the area but also more inaccessible because of its location in Union Square (for now! Hurry up MBTA construction!!). Servings were huge (especially if you get the GOP 1.5x portion size). My friend got this egg noodle that I will describe as relatively flavorless, mostly a black pepper taste. Kind of disappointed with the jjajangmyun here, which is why we made the trek to Somerville in the first place. The flavor just wasn't there, kind of bland and the noodles were a little over cooked. The spicy tangsuyook(sweet and spicy fried pork) was also just okay, the batter was a bit chewy and I didn't get the best bites of pork that I would have liked. The one thing I did enjoy was the yuk gae jang, although it could've used more meat. Good spicy soup though. Also the spicy radish banchan was great, crunchy and perfectly fermented. Great family run business serving some of the city's best Korean/Chinese food. We dined indoors and the food was served piping hot and fresh. Highly recommend the jjajangmyun and the fried pork (which can also be done with beef) aka tangsooyeok. As a long-standing patron of Buk Kyung since I was a kid (this is the original location before #2 opened up in Allston several years ago), it's unfortunate to say that this place has been going downhill in quality and taste. It's oddly near-impossible to find good Korean-Chinese food in Boston (still) for simple homey dishes like jjajangmyun, jjambong, tangsuyook, ganpoongi, etc. so from time to time, my mom and I visit Buk Kyung to fill this craving. I came by here last night for a quick bite and there weren't many customers (maybe 3-5) so empty tables warranted getting seated quickly. We ordered the beef bokkeumbap (beef fried rice) $9.99 and jjajangmyun $9.99. The food came out surprisingly fast along with their simple banchan (cucumbers, kimchi, mung bean sprouts, danmuji). But the portion size of the fried rice was relatively small, served on a cheap thin white plastic plate, with some sesame seeds sprinkled on top. The shabby amount of thinly-sliced beef in the fried rice was a bit disappointing, but tasted alright overall. The big letdown was the jjajangmyun. A classic that isn't hard to ruin. I noticed they switched over to thinner wheat noodles and the jjajang sauce was wayyy too sweet to our liking with mostly chopped onions. It reminded me of the $3 kind you'd find at a mediocre Korean-Chinese restaurant in Korea. I know this is a family business since the owner changed, but man this was a letdown. read more

It's hard to find decent Korean food in the Boston area. Koreana in Cambridge is probably one of the better options in regards to solid Korean food. However, for Korean/Chinese fusion (where one is craving jjajjangmyun or jjambbong), Boston residents are limited to Buk Kyung in Allston and Somerville as well as the food court in the HMart Burlington location. I have yet to try the HMart Burlington jjajjangmyun, but Buk Kyung isn't as good as the ones that I've tried in NY. The sachon ganjjajjang is the spicy ganjjajjang myun. Honestly, when you eat this, all you tast is the red pepper flakes. It masks any flavor. The 2nd time around, I tried the ganjjajjang. Hmm it tastes sweet and oily? Where is the flavor? Not a fan. The tangsooyook is not yummy either. It's flavorless. However the gangpoongee is actually one of their better dishes. I just wish it was less sweet and stayed crispy throughout the meal. The jjambbong is okay. It's not bad nor good. Honestly, for the price, i think i prefer to save money and just make jjawang jjajjangmyun at home. read more

Very reasonably priced, homestyle Korean. Haemul pajeon (seafood pancake) was huge (serves 3-4), tasty but a bit scant on seafood. Jjampong (seafood soup noodles) was tasty but seemed like mostly chili powder flavoring more than anything else. Ordered soondubu jjigae with pork but server brought out haemul soondubu jjigae (seafood) instead. This tasted super tomatoey and less authentic that I would expect. This location is definitely better than the one in Allston! This place has really good jajangmyun, jampong, tangsuyook (sweet and sour pork), and all things Korean! The texture of the noodles for the jajanmyun and jampong is perfect. I like the chewiness of it. The sauce for the jajangmyun is really tasty. It is loaded with onions, veggies, and some meat. The jampong is also really delicious. The soup is flavorful and there is a lot of seafood in the soup. The sweet and sour pork is also really tender and coated with a light batter. The sweet and sour sauce is also really good. I like how they are really generous with the portion! One down side about this restaurant is that the service is kind of slow. They get busy during lunch and dinner hours and this place lacks servers! I have been here couple of times and had to wait over 10 minutes for a server to come to take my order. read more

Legit Korean-Chinese food. Buk Kyung is perfect for a weekend lunch with a group of friends. The more friends the better, as the dishes really seem to scale well the more you order. Their portions are large and not super cheap, but with 8 friends we all ended up super stuffed for less than $20 a person. I would even recommend sharing the individual noodle dishes. The typical Korean-style Chinese dishes seem to fall into main categories: noodles and crispy fried stuff. On the crispy fried front we tried the tangsooyook sweet and sour pork, the ganpoonggi sweet and spicy chicken, and ganpoonggi shrimp. The tangsooyook was the best dish of the meal in my opinon. It was very crispy and tender, and comparable to incarnations I have tried in Korean. The other two were also good. On the noodle front we had the famous jajangmyun black bean noodles, the jjampong seafood noodle soup, and the ulmyun seafood and egg chowder. The jajangmyun was pretty solid and I enjoyed their jjampong more than I usually do at other places. It was my first time trying ulmyun and it was pretty tasty. They also have tons of other traditional Korean dishes on their menu. Service was friendly. Food took a while to come out of the kitchen, but once it got going, it didn't seem to stop. We were also offered some dumplings and an extra bowl of jajangmyun as a freebie. Great for groups. read more

For now, Buk Kyung gets three stars. I will be back for the soups, because after going and getting a dish that wasn't, it seemed like everyone else in the place ordered soups. I got a strip steak and onion dish as my entree, while Robert got a spicy chicken dish. To start, we got scallion pancakes and dumplings. Everything was tasty, and came out super fast. The little dishes of kim chee, pickled cucumbers, bean sprouts, and various other goodies were fun, and and eating adventure for Robert. The menu wasn't as extensive for the other reviews posted, but I was happy with the options......except there was only one chicken dish on the menu. The rest are beef and pork. The service was great, and there only seemed to be three people working. It was quick, except for getting the check. The food was good and authentic. The bill was a little high for a Sunday lunch for two ($50), but well worth exposing Robert to authentic Korean food. Also, word of wisdom-all credit cards are accepted except for AMEX. read more

I don't believe they speak much English, but they do provide the best service they can, so kudos to that. I really hope this place stays in business because its specialities are very very good. This isn't a traditional Korean restaurant in a few ways. Traditionally, many Korean restaurants are BBQ joints where they marinate various meat dishes and grill them right at your table or in the back depending on the size of the place. Buk Kyung specializes in Chinese Korean food, which is basically Korean preparation of some Chinese dishes that are popular with Koreans. So if you come here, order the popular stuff (jajangmyun, tangsooyuk, ganpung shrimp). My favorites here are the ganpung shrimp (shrimp tempura tossed in red peppery sweet and sour sauce) and jajangmyun ( noodles with black bean sauce, pork, vegetables). The noodles are just something you crave every once and they do a good job of them. The springiness and stickiness feel just about right and the sauce is plentiful and very satisfying. I'm pleasantly surprised by how flavorful the ganpung shrimp is. It is on the spicy side which I like, but be careful you don't eat one of the many small chilies garnishing the dish or you'll be choking and crying at the table. I didn't care much for the kimchi tchigae nor jambong here since I prefer both of these dishes with a thicker spicier broth, but as I wrote previously you can't go wrong with any of the other specialities mentioned above. I used to frequent this place more often because it was across the street from the korean market in union sq, but HMart in Burlington has been getting more of my business in the last year and possibly stealing business from both the market and this restaurant. read more

The Tomboy-dressin, decent-looking girl-next-door that kisses great- that's what Buk Kyung is. In a city that utterly lacks good Korean food, this place isn't that bad (this really is a 3.5 star review until I can try other dishes). Very bland-looking establishment, which reminds me of the in-house cafeterias I found in office buildings in Korea when I was stationed there last year, but uber friendly. The food isn't great enough to write home about, but is good enough to consider coming back to when I'm Jonesing for Korean eats. We had the Jjajangmyeon (noodles in black bean sauce), ojingo bokkeum (sauteed squid and vegetables in spicy sauce), and soondubu jiggae (spicy soft tofu soup). The noodles weren't bad at all, which surprised me, since I can never find a place to satisfy my craving when I'm outside of NY or LA. The squid was OK- nothing great, nothing bad. The tofu soup.... gets a strange complaint from me: too many shrimp. It's not as good as the other Korean establishments in Boston, but, I'll eat it if ordered by somebody else. I like this place enough to come back again, as I know the real test of their food will involve the meat dishes, pancakes, and cold noodles. I lived in K-Town NJ my entire life, so I grew up eating cuisine like this. So when I came to school in Boston, I didn't expect to be able to taste such good Korean-Chinese fusion outside of my hometown. I was pleasantly surprised when my boyfriend and I tried this place out after reading other yelp reviews. First of all, the service is incredible. As soon as we walked in, we were seated in the warmest part of the room (near the heater). The owner went around asking everyone how the food was, and when customers said "Everything's great," he responded with "Oh I love when that happens!" How cute is that? The food was extremely delicious and filling, even for my boyfriend, who rarely gets full after meals at restaurants. The portions are generous enough that you won't leave hungry. Overall, this was the best spur-of-the-moment find ever and we'll definitely be back soon. read more

My trip here started with a friend from out of town stopping by. She's a vegetarian, so my roommates and I started to come up with a variety of options. Eventually my roommate Chris suggested a 'great place called Pot Pot." He swore it was great, and neglected to comment that he'd never been there and was making up the name. Walking into Buk Kyong we weren't even sure this was the place he was thinking about. I really wasn't terribly impressed by Buk Kyung. Seeing the 4 star reviews, and the location, I would think this was going to be a hidden gem of Somerville, however, the "unpretentious" atmosphere I was hoping for struck me as slightly bland and cafeteria like. There were no vegetarian options listed, you had to ask to prepare the food sans meat, but there was no reduced price for it either. On a positive note, the staff was friendly and patient (with a slight language barrier this was appreciated). The abundant 'sides' were present (like every other korean restaurant.) The food was all pretty good, but not superb. The fried chicken my roommates got was tastey, and in great supply, but after half the mound was gone, it just was a bit too much for fried food. In the end, the four of us walked out with a 68 dollar tab, pretty stuffed, but not gunning to head back here. I might pick up an order or two of the fried chicken for a poker game or party where some snacks are in order, but otherwise I'm willing to bet that better Korean food can be found in Boston, even though there was nothing particularly wrong with this place. read more

Considering most of the families and young groups seemed to be really enjoying themselves, we knew we were in the right place. Minus one aspect: no liquor license. Stop at Jerry's Liquor on Somerville Ave on your way to Bukk Kyung and all problems are solved. Friday night at 830pm and the place was three quarters full. Goon Mandoo dumplings are lightly pan fried and filled with pork and vegetables (4.50) and the Tong Mandoo dumplings are steamed and filled with pork and vegetables (7.95). Both are obviously site made and delicious. The goon mandoo come quickly but the tong mandoo don't come until entrees arrive - both are so good it hardly matters. A couple bowls of fresh miso soup arrive and are excellent. The Bibimbab comes with vegetables, shredded beef, fried egg and is served with white rice, red chili paste and miso soup (10.95). The Jabchac is a cellophane noodle dish that is stir fried with sesame oil and sliced pork some mushrooms, carrots, onions and spinach (12.95). Finally my Mandookuk is a beef short rib soup with handmade dumplings, rice cakes, shredded beef and egg (9.95). The broth is a bright red color and I permanently ruin the bright white shirt I am wearing when I drop some pickled pickled radishes in the broth and splash myself with red hell. Totally worth it. The entrees are enough to serve two each. Ridiculously in-expensive and with mountains of food. A family restaurant to be sure but a nice place to take a date or have a low key dinner with friends on a Friday night. And you're in Union Square to start the night off!!! read more

Randomly came to this joint for lunch since we're in Union Sq. It was a pretty slow Saturday lunch.. Not even a quarter filled dining room. First off, the AC was not blasting on a warm day. When it's summery out, I go eat at restaurants for their AC because I rather not slave in front of the stove and sweat like a pig. Secondly, the can of coke is kitchen warm. I love my Coke iced cold, not very warm Coke over hollow ice which makes the Coke flat and taste watered down. There wasn't much ice left after pouring the Coke into the cup of ice. Thirdly, the stone Bibimbap was not heated enough. I didn't get my crispy rice on the bottom! The whole point of paying extra for stone bowl is for the treat near the end. Other than that, the rice bowl was fine. Forgot to mention.. The meal came with half cup of miso soup with no seaweed. The server was friendly and did her job in serving us.
