was craving hotpot after a long day while visiting boston from out of town -- came in with a group of five and three on the way, and got seated pretty much immediately. service was wonderful -- the woman serving us was super accommodating and answered all our questions, and the food came out in a timely manner. for our side of the table, we ordered a split pot with the pork bone and the cilantro broths. both were delicious; we were halfway done just drinking soup before the meat and vegetables came. meat portions were generous and quality was good, plus the vegetable offerings seemed fresh and plentiful. we also ordered a few appetizers: spicy fries, shrimp pancake, and crispy pork jowl -- all lived up to and even exceeded expectations. was a great experience all around to end the day off, and prices were affordable for the group. read more

The food itself and the hotpot experience was pretty good! The pork bone broth and the Japanese curry were both very good. The cuts of meat were on the thicker side (especially the pork belly). Also, the "one person" servings are pretty big and felt more like two people's servings in my opinion. For a group of 7 we definitely ate our money's worth. The only downside was that the service wasn't great. When we were seated, we were given menus but no one explained to us how to use it. The service was not good enough for that all they did was give us food and water not the top star restaurant we were expecting. He made it sound like the 20 percent tip was required by law. The service is good not overly attentive but gives you time and checks back here and there. The last few times we've been it's just taken a while to get our check. The place could use an update. Had a craving for hotpot one day and there was lack of options for hotpot after 12am. Decided to give Kaze a try and it was not a great experience. The service is incredibly slow and our server was all over the place. Her phone was glued to her our entire meal and every time I looked over to spot where she was because we were waiting for our pot with soup broths to come (it had been over 30 minutes) , she was too busy talking on her personal phone. Once we had her attention and reminded her of the meats & items we ordered, she would forget again and we continued to wait. I would skip their drinks also because they are super watery. Came in alone on a Wednesday around 2:30. I was the only guest inside, and was offered a booth with a lot of privacy. I got the spicy tom yum broth, with beef. The assorted vegetables that came with it were spinach, cabbage, carrot. I was excited that they offer Mung Bean noodles with the combo. The portion size for the beef was generous, but wished for more assortment with the veg for the price. I got the assorted tofu and mushroom add ons. The assorted mushrooms was everything I was looking for, and the tofu platter left me wishing I ordered what tofu I wanted individually, but the price prohibited me from doing this. Some of the vegetables pieces were so large, I used the side of the ladle to cut them to be able to eat them. The broth was AWESOME. The server was very sweet and welcoming. The melon ball cocktail was well balanced, and not too sweet (I was afraid of that)!!!! Yay! I definitely will be coming back whenever I'm in the area. The good: I walked in around 2 PM this afternoon and was seated immediately. I was the only person in the restaurant so my food came out immediately...within 5 minutes I'd say. I ordered the szechuan spicy hotpot with boneless short beef rib, udon and a side of vegetables that consisted of one slice of carrot, quarter of an ear of corn, spinach and Chinese lettuce. The waitress brought a cart full of an assortment of sauces and herbs/garnishments to add to my meal. The food was absolutely delicious and the quantity was so much that I had to pack a to go container. Today is my first day trying hotpot and I can possibly see myself returning. The not so good: Although my waitress was very nice I felt rushed from the moment I sat down. I did not get a chance to view the entire menu before I was asked for my order. I knew I wanted hotpot so she briefly explained some of the items on the menu. After my food was served the waitress approached my table nine times...yes, I began counting because it felt excessive. Granted, I took about an hour to eat but I was the only person there so it was not like I was holding up the table from other people. When it became time to pay she stood at my table and waited for me to pull out cash. It was really off putting and uncomfortable. Also, as I was packing my food to go I noticed that dirt was caked up on the bottom of the cabbage so I'm sure I digested some extra calcium. I'm very conflicted if I'd return to this place. This is the worst place you can go and enjoy food. TLDR: This place really sucks. 0. When we entered and seated, a guy who handed over us menus had flu. And he sneezed on the counter. 1. When you enter there is a sauce station, I wanted to get the sauce the old lady refused because it only comes with Shabu Shabu. She did not let me soy sauce for the noodles. 3. Being denied from having sauce, I refused to pay the tip. The same flu guy (to identify he is slim, short and unattractive guy with glasses) demanded me the tip. I asked him that the lady did not even given me the sauce, that's I don't want to pay the tip I still did not pay. Then he threw the receipt in the air in rage instead of handing me. I waited there and demanded my receipt the other staff comes and got the receipt. 4. If you are Asian please avoid this disappointment. For other,s please don't ruin your dining experience. 5. The meat is thick and tough (I got the rib eye plate....not at all like the thin shabu meats youre thinking about), the broth is tasteless and very chinese style and the sauces are not shabu shabu style--Why didnt they just name their restaurant hot pot--rather than shabu shabu. What a great way to start out 2023 with a solid 4/5 star rating! I've dined at Kaze several times now, but I feel confident in giving them 4 solid stars. This is the perfect comfort food spot that's opened later in the night and decent in price. Service is always pretty quick. Amazing quality meat cuts, including the Japanese Wagyu Kobe beef which comes with gold flakes on top. The bone marrow soup broth is phenomenal, and it comes with a bone and meat melting off the sides. The only reason why this place cannot receive my 5-star rating is because the sauces are left out in the open for everyone to access. They don't even have a sanitary cover. read more

I've tried every single hotpot places in China Town, and so far, Kaze Shabu Shabu is definitely one of my top choices, if not my absolute top choice. First of all, Kaze Shabu shabu has been great not only for a group lunch/dinner, but also amazing for a single person to dine in. They have smaller table with a one person pot in a somewhat separate area so that it's less intimidating for a single person to go and enjoy a nice warm hotpot. The restaurant's really clean, and unlike most of hotpot places, it doesn't ooze cumin smell. I don't have to put my clothes into laundry bag right after coming out of the place. The quality/quantity had never disappointed me. They have a lot of options for broth flavours, meat selection, and noodle selection. Their combos come with decent amount of meat, no matter which one you order, various sorts of veggies, and you can choose one of their noodles (I usually choose mung bean noodles). The price is very reasonable. I think they recently upped the price a bit, but still, when I go by myself, I come out, very satiated, paying around $25. I've also seen some hotpot places in Chinatown area where they bring out dipping sauce with a few ingredients to mix in, but Kaze Shabu Shabu has a dipping sauce bar (which is a huge plus for a lot of hot pot lovers :D ) read more

I would like to start off this review by saying the food here was AWESOME! I loved how you could have an individual or share with others, the variety of foods was impressive. The only problem is the menu and the waiters can be unclear at times. It took many attempts to order correctly and have it make sense to my family and I. I loved the "get your own dipping sauce" that way everyone's gets something they like. The seating is limited but it isn't very busy so that isn't a problem. I've heard some not-super-great things about the quality of the food which is why I have not returned Experience 3/5 The inside is very old fashion in its decor and outdated. Compared to other hot pot spots they are definitely behind. Food 2/5 My main priority with food is that it is fresh, and not in any way suspicious whenever I go here for the food. I've been coming here almost every weekend! The quality here never changed and I love their menu. They have lots of appetizers and cooked food beyond just hot pot menu. Their meet variety is fresh and great portions. I enjoy their raw oysters and Kobe sushi. The oysters were big and fresh, I love the sauce they marinate it in. The Kobe sushi is blow torched table side which is such a fun experience! These two are special items that you'd have to ask for and won't be on the menu. I enjoy their sauce station which they bring to your table. I love coming to this place, the staff is always friendly and inviting and make sure we get what we need. Kaze Shabu Shabu is one of the least expensive a la carte hotpot places in Boston which I have visited on numerous occasions. I have not reviewed it until now and decided to so I can share all my experiences here. I have been going here since I was in high school and it is certainly a no frills hotpot place which also serves some appetizers and other dishes. It is a great option for a less expensive place that is not all you can eat and is open until 1 on weekdays and I believe 2 on weekends. The reason why I am rating 3/5 stars is for a couple reasons. The place itself is not always the cleanest and the sauce bar is usually dirty and surrounded by small flies. The other reasoning is the service, which is not great. I understand some restaurants prioritize efficiency over friendliness, but the service can be slow and the employees are not very friendly. There was a point where I was going frequently and one time I noticed that the bill on my bank statement showed that they put the tip in as almost double what I recorded it as. I had a photo and informed the restaurant employees and instead of rectifying the situation they gave me a free shot. I was mostly upset that they assumed I wouldn't notice and I was a regular customer who always tips 20% so it felt disrespectful and dishonest. Since that incident they now use a system like toast where the tip is automatically put into the computer system, but it still was a bit off putting. For the price of the hotpot, it is much more affordable than places like Liuyshou, La Mei, and Da Long Yi, but if you are willing to spend more I would recommend those places over Kaze Shabu Shabu. This is a place to go if you want hotpot past midnight, or don't mind dealing with lower quality food and service. read more

Kaze Shabu Shabu is their name, but there's a poster outside advertising their lunch specials consisting of Bibimbap (Korean mixed rice bowl) and Ramen (Japanese soup noodle) served daily till 3pm. This tempted me because it has been rather hot this summer so far, and I'm not much one for Shabu Shabu (cooking your own food in a hot pot of soup) when it is this hot. Note that Kaze does not open until 12 noon on Sundays, 11:30am every other day. There's two bubble tea places down the block. By 12:30pm, their first floor was full up, and we had all been served our main dishes, as the Bibimbaps came with both miso soup and ice cream, while the Ramen came with ice cream. All that for $9.50! ($10.50 if we had gone with the eel variant) The clay pot arrived super hot and without a verbal warning. But we were all experienced enough to know better than to touch the pot. I gave my egg a flip to start the raw side cooking against the pot, then shortly realized it would be best to give my rice a nice scooping as well, since I prefer my scorched rice a golden crisp sans the burned black. The beef, though shaved too thin, was well flavored. The portion fully consumed, and well satisfied. A DC commented that the ramen noodles were too soft, but the egg was very well done and nicely flavored. Ice cream was a simple scoop of vanilla. A nice end to a tasty meal. (On another visit, it was strawberry. The similarity was that there was no choice offered.) For those electing hot pot, I thought it great fun that the condiments to make the sauce was provided on a well contained trolley. We'll be back. They also offer hot pot lunch specials, starting at $10 for beef, lamb, pork, or chicken breast, while topping out at $15.50 prime rib eye. $15.75 seafood deluxe, and $33 beef lover, and all the items you could want to add for a la carte pricing. Note: 18% gratuity was automatically included for our party of 8. *** I did return on a cooler day for one of their hot pot lunch combos. It was $10 for either lamb or beef, so I opted for the lamb and traded slices with a DC to try the beef. Both were thin cut and tender and tasty, so can't go wrong either way! I played it simple and selected their included meat bullion and tossed in some scallions and fried garlic from their sauce cart. It sufficed. But I did sample a DC's $5.95 Pork Compact Bone Marrow w/Tomatoes & Sweet Corns soup base (aka Big Pork Bone Soup) and found it a nice rich alternative. When sharing a burner with another, the broth arrived in a large divided pot. However, for my own private burner at the other end of the table I was provided with a smaller pot containing my single soup base. It was larger than those individual settings set bar side at other establishments, and so could hold everything I decided to toss in at the first go without running out of space nor cooling down overly much. Unlike the flip side of the lunch menu, the hot pot combos do not come with dessert (a refreshing scoop of ice cream). Instead, the meat selected is accompanied by a bowl of assorted vegetables (namely greens, carrot, turnip, mushroom, and corn), and a choice of noodles (Japanese Potato, Mung Bean, Udon, Spinach, Vermicelli) or rice. Neither lamb nor beef take long to cook, so just a few swishes till the color changed over, and it was ready to eat. Veggies were not quite as simple, as the root vegetables and mushroom should be tossed in first for a longer hot bath. Noodles soak up some of the broth, so I threw those in close to the end of my meal. I ate all the meat and leafy greens, but some of the noodles and other vegetables made it home with me for a snack. read more

The food fuels us and prepares us for the next day. The restaurant is run by a wonderful group. We love the service and friendliness. They are quick to solve your needs, bring dishes, and remove dishes. Even going out of their way sometimes to dress up your dipping sauce on your behalf. We have ordered everything on the menu. Every time, the food is always impeccable. Fresh. Delicious. Kaze Shabu Shabu is a gem. It is challenging to find restaurants such as these. Great food. Great pricing. Excellent service. I cannot say enough good things about Kaze. Slightly off the main drag but not too far sits Kaze by itself. The side of the building is very colorful and it wasn't hard to find. Admittedly our main goal was a scorpion bowl, and a lot of the traditional restaurants in Chinatown only serve beer and wine. We weren't familiar with many of the places in the area, but a friend suggested Kaze for mixed drinks. The scorpion bowl was delicious and reasonably priced ($10) but the food...oh, the food. When I saw dolsot bibimbap as a lunch special my heart was aflutter. It was exquisite and half the price a restaurant elsewhere would charge. It was a cold night out so my girlfriend and I wanted hotpot. We went to our usual spot across the street (Shabu Zen) but it was super busy. We decided to give Kaze a try because of all the good reviews and the 4 stars. It was the worst decision we made. Going to cut straight to the point here. The food was AWFUL. The prices were surprisingly cheap compared to other places but you get what you pay for here. We ordered two simple things; prime ribeye combo and lamb combo with the tom yum broth. Both combos came with a bowl full of vegetables. First off, the tom yum broth we ordered was bland and did not have any strong tastes or fragrances of tom yum. When I cooked my prime ribeye, I noticed that there were still parts of it that was still pink around the ends. This was weird because beef should not take no longer than 20-30 seconds to fully cook. I let my beef cook in there for a couple more minutes to see if the pink would go away - it did not. WHY is that?? For our vegetables, we were given a deep tall bowl full of napa cabbages, carrots, corn, mushroom, and watercress. The portion was a lot. However, the quality of the food was ABSOLUTELY MEDIOCRE. Kernels on the corn were black and we had no idea why. The mushroom still had dirt on it and looked like they pulled it straight from the farm. The cabbage was literally rotting and had black sticky gooey substance on it. Also the watercress looked like it had been left out all day to dry and wilt. It looked like they grabbed it straight from the bottom of the box and threw it into the bowl. ALSO!!! This place has a DIY sauce serving station. Given the circumstances of the time we are living in, this was in no way COVID friendly at all. Each sauce tin had its own spoon. Who knows what customers come back for more sauce and accidentally touches the spoon with their own sauces?? They need to get rid of this concept and bring the sauces to the customers table instead. I was so shock because this place looked very promising and delicious from all these yelp reviews/photos. Needless to say this is the last time we will ever come back here. I should have complained to see if I could get something deducted from the bill. This was literally the worst hotpot we have ever been to. Giving 1 star because service was great though. This was my first time having hot pot and it did not disappoint. We ordered the beef combo, the shiitake mushrooms, and of course some soju to wash it all down. Let me tell you, the beef was to die for. So tender and flavorful. Our base was tom yum, and just the broth itself was delicious enough. The staff was so friendly and enjoyed talking to us and guiding us through how hot pot worked. They liked us so much they even gave us a few items on the house. The only drawback to how delicious the food was, was how impatient I was when eating and I ended up burning my tongue quite a bit. Will not make that mistake again! We were so intrigued by other lunch combos. Hotpot has a choice of meat and noodles with assorted vegetables. Bibimbap comes with miso soup and ice cream. Ramen comes with ice cream. I would totally try all these combinations, but I obviously wouldn't finish it all, so I stuck with hotpot. My friends and I also ordered tea ($0 guys!). The menu is presented in a way for a newcomer to understand. I love the visuals! The sauces and sauce ingredients came in a wheeled cart to stop at the end of the table. The food is so well presented that it's worth a picture at any angle. If you miss the opportunity to take pictures because you were so hungry and just dug in (which happens all the time), the food is worth eating as well! Kaze has a variety of seatings and decent bathrooms on different floors. Service could improve a bit. It took a while to get our orders and sauces after we ordered. When we wanted to get tea or the bill, it was hard to get someone's attention since no one checked in with us or acknowledged our eye contacts towards them. Overall A-OK. I had the benefit of having visited before and knowing this restaurant wasn't too packed/crowded (for COVID precautions), so I picked it again to take my parents who were visiting town for the first time. A friend had a $100+ parking ticket because he wasn't from around the area and did not notice the signs. What I like most about Kaze is the relaxed laid back atmosphere which is great for groups or just a regular family dinner. Appetizers are good too. I recommend the fried oysters and the wings. You never feel rushed here. The broths and quantity of food vegetables are good too. I recommend the ribeye and the seafood supreme. Kaze Shabu was a random stop for us; we were on our way to dinner reservations at Island Creek Oyster but we were enticed by shabu/hot pot. I'm usually pretty boring with my soup bases (see: plain or kombu) BUT we decided to try something new and went for the: *泰式冬蔭湯底 THAI TOMYUM: I'm usually really really skeptical about tom yum in general but this was pretty tasty. *中式藥膳湯底 CHINESE HERBAL: This might be a little off-putting for folks who aren't used to traditional chinese herbs but I loved this! As for the protein, sides, etc. I particularly enjoyed the 手打蝦丸 HOMEMADE SHRIMP BALL and 鮮蝦雲吞 HOMEMADE SHRIMP WONTON - super fresh and handmade. I don't love the sauce bar (they roll out individual carts per table) because there are some weird non-traditional sauces BUT the base is so flavorful that the sauces aren't really necessary.
