The Best All-Around Izakaya in Boston Nagomi Izakaya in Kenmore Square is easily one of the most well-rounded Japanese spots in the city. Whether you're here for high-end sushi, creative small plates, or comforting kitchen dishes, everything is executed at a very high level. We ordered a massive spread, and almost every single dish was a hit. The Raw Bar & Sushi: * Oysters: These were 10/10. Incredibly fresh, perfectly halved, and meticulously cleaned--not a single piece of shell in sight. We loved them so much we had to go for a second round. * 8pc Omakase & 6pc Aburi Set: Both sets were fantastic. The Aburi (torched) set is a must-try for that smoky melt-in-your-mouth texture. * Uni Nigiri: Even my wife, who usually avoids raw fish, was won over by how creamy and fresh the Uni was. * Tuna Tataki: This was the only "just okay" dish for me. It had good flavor, but I think it would have been elevated with some shredded daikon and a colder temperature. Kitchen & Family Favorites: * Foie Gras Appetizer: Rich, decadent, and a perfect way to start the meal. * Sea Bass: My son absolutely loved this; he finished the entire portion with rice. * Snow Crab Roll: An excellent option for those who prefer cooked rolls. * Tonkotsu Ramen: We finished off the meal with a hot bowl of ramen, which was the perfect savory "topper" to a great dinner. The Experience: The service is efficient and the wait times for food were surprisingly short given how much we ordered. One of the biggest takeaways was the value. The pricing is very fair for this level of quality; back home in Nashville, a meal like this would have easily cost significantly more. The Verdict: While I would love to see a few more small, refreshing salad dishes on the menu to balance out the richness, I left extremely happy. This is a top-tier dining experience and a definite "must-visit" whenever I'm back in town!
Went on a weeknight and the place was still busy with lots of seatings, which is always a good sign. The restaurant is very pretty, and I loved the cute koi fish area -- such a nice touch. I ordered the seafood udon and the tuna & salmon bowl, and everything was absolutely delicious. Service was fast, and the staff was very nice and attentive. Definitely a great spot I'd come back to!
First time in the city and our friends highly recommended Nagomi Izakaya. It was a nice evening so we decided to walk the 20 minutes from our hotel in Back Bay to Nagomi Izakaya. Easy walk and we built up our appetite for the meal to come. First thing we noticed was the large menu offering a great variety of Japanese cuisine. My wife went with the Bluefin Tuna and Toro Don which was loaded with the freshest tuna served with sliced sashimi and minced toro over a bed of perfectly cooked rice. I had also entered intending to order a bowl but after looking at the menu I had to go with the Premium Chef's Omakase which included gyoza dumplings, edamame, fresh oysters, nigiri sushi, sushi roll, and the freshest sashimi. I was a bit confused when I tried to order sake when our server said my Premium Omakase included the house sake as part of the meal..that was a nice bonus! We finished off our meal with a matcha crepe cake/green tea ice cream making it the perfect ending. Overall it was a great meal at very good price for the quality of seafood, fantastic service, and drink choices. I'd highly recommend Nagomi for anyone looking a wonderful izakaya meal!
Pretty restaurant with quality fish and wide menu offerings. The sake don came with a ton of salmon and we enjoyed the crazy maki and tuna belly rolls. The takoyaki balls were also creamy and flavorful and the miso soup was very strongly miso flavored. Food came out quick and items were decently priced.
My partner and I had an awesome time at Nagomi Izakaya. We went with the Signature Chef Omakase that came with sake, and it hit the spot--super satisfying without feeling too heavy, and the price was pretty reasonable. It kicked off with some edamame, miso soup, and gyoza, which were all tasty. With the sushi/sashimi set, we started with the oysters, and the vinegary sauce on top was a bit too strong and kind of overpowered them. The rest of the meal was great though--the fish was super fresh, and the king salmon was hands-down my favorite. So buttery and delicious. Service was pretty attentive too, and it wasn't too busy since we went around closing time, which made it feel nice and relaxed. Overall a cozy spot for fresh sushi/sashimi! Would happily return to try more things on their menu.
Wow. Came here alone and I was treated so well! The staff kept checking on me and my food came out fresh and fast! Everything was SOOOOO good!!!! Love the energy inside. So cozy.
Fast and fresh sushi and ramen spot on the Boston University campus. It was under $30 for 3 rolls, miso soup and seaweed salad. The rolls were so tasty. My kids loved the ramen and you can select udon noodles.
I had an incredible meal here!! The sushi is so fresh and they have an extensive menu of options! The ambience is very nice and gives a relaxing vibe and the service was exceptional!! I tried the 8 piece omakase set along with the Nagomi don bowl and the salmon & ikura hand roll and all were absolutely INCREDIBLE! The fish was super fresh and flavorful and each bite was perfectly crafted for the best taste!! Will definitely be back and would absolutely recommend
Quick walk over from Fenway Park - we were seated immediately at the bar after the end of a game (although we were asked to move down from our original seats later once more people arrived to accommodate another party). Sushi tasted fresh, a little on the expensive side but prices overall on par for Boston. Service was prompt. Would consider returning if in the area, but probably would not make a special trip out again.
Got the salmon donburi and the strawberry mojito, pretty good meal. The salmon was nice and fresh, there was plenty of rice underneath. Wasabi isn't super spicy, soy sauce was rich. The drink was the right level of sweet but not strong, but it tasted good! My friends passion fruit drink was a great combo of sour and bitter yuzu and was slightly stronger in taste! The interior was cozy but sleek and had lots of nice decor. Service was very friendly and attentive. Overall solid experience but a bit pricey for what you get.
No "Irasshaimase!" welcome here because it's not truly Japanese. Then again, I didn't get a "Ni hao" either. Not sure I would characterize this as Izakaya, more sushi bar. Still, the food was well done if small portioned. I enjoyed the "premium omekase" I ordered. Boston prices did not disappoint. Service was fast and friendly. The sushi bar vibe was right.
A true hidden gem for Omakase. The premium and signature Omakase are definitely worth it, with a great selection of premium cuts of fish/sushi, appetizers, miso soup, and hot or cold sake. Whether it's date night for 2 or girls' night for 8, the experience for the few times were incredible. They were very attentive and can recommend the best options for the occasion! Can't wait to be back again!
***TO-GO ORDER*** Food 5/5 -Aburi sushi set of 8, this was the best sushi set I have ever eaten but also the most expensive. Fish was fresh, seared to perfectly smokey but not overdone. My favorite favorite favorite piece was the foie gras. Highly recommend for a special treat. -Torched toro maki, caviar feels like a fancy touch but did not make a significant different honestly. The toro was really good though, overall still an above average quality sushi but I don't think it's worth the price. -Seafood maki, insanely luxurious roll with sweet shrimp and uni and scallop, just all the most delicate ingredients you never see in a sushi roll. Tasted amazing and I would get this again even though it's very expensive. Packaging was superb, sushi was in great condition through delivery service. read more

I got the premium chef's omakase and bomb handroll - TASTE: 5/5 - solid omakase w oysters, sushi, sashimi, and torched toro maki. And the bomb handroll was perfection: torched scallops, toro, uni, caviar, and truffle everything! TEXTURE: 4/5 - miso soup and edamame to balance the rest of the tender sushi PRICE: 5/5 - $88 premium chef's omakase is a steal, would come back! Handroll was indulgent at $28 though lol SERVING SIZE: 5/5 - more pieces in the omakase than I expected, plus the sake! We didn't have a reservation for a Friday evening, but they quickly were able to get us seats at the bar. The restaurant was busy, but the decor like the Khoi pond and being able to see the chefs make the sushi fresh enhanced the experience. To drink I tried the Japanese passionfruit margarita and it was very refreshing. I also got the unagi don and my fiancé got a salmon roll. Everything was delicious and tasted fresh. Easy to make reservation on yelp just one day early for a party of four. Chill and ambient vibes and the servers were friendly. The martinis my friend and I ordered were very bad - they just tasted like fruit punch and a very strong sweet flavor without the taste of alcohol. Omakase set was pretty good and fresh. My only complaint would be how the rice was a little overpowering. The two rice bowls we share were decent as well. An okay place to go to if you just want an affordable omakase set. They also have makis and many other different options on the menu to try out. -6.8/10 read more
I loved this place so much, I decided to come back again the next week! This time, I decided to try their omakase. It was delicious and it was different from other omakases I have tried. They served all of the sashimi in one boat rather than course after another course. Nonetheless, it was still good and worth it for the price, especially if you like raw fish. The foie gras was my favorite, as well as the otoro. The service here is amazing, every time. Definitely give Nagomi Izakaya a try if you're in the area and have not yet tried! read more
This place is such a hidden gem! It's hard to come by if you don't know where to look but its located right in Kenmore! It's super elegant inside and the service is pretty good but it can get busy. For food, we got a mini omakase set, food gras and cooked fish hand rolls, karaage chicken, grilled octopus, oysters, and cheese corn. The nigiris were so beautiful and felt super elegant. Overall great quality for the price. The hand rolls were okay but I didn't love either flavor profiles. The chicken was good but not the best I've had. Octopus was cool to get but a bit too chewy sometimes. The corn cheese was exactly what I expected. The drinks are also pretty good here! They have a lot of creative sake-based martinis which are delicious. Also I love yuzu sake. Overall, I think the nigiris/sushi are the best thing here that I had, but they do offer more entree-like dishes like noodles and meats! A great spot :) read more
Came here on a Saturday for a later dinner and the spot wasn't too busy surprisingly; the space is super thin and it was a little loud due to how noisy other tables were being, but it was fine otherwise. Staff were patient to wait for my friend who was running late so that was nice; they ended up moving me to a larger table while I was just seated and that was pleasant. The menu had a good mix of dishes; I will say that the prices were a bit steep for pretty much everything, especially the appetizers. Nonetheless, things were tasty and I enjoyed everything, although the prices didn't match the quality or quantity. Takoyaki was nice, albeit a bit small, while the croquettes were nice overall. The sushi was decent quality and the bowls were fine as well, good amount of fish and the cuts were a good size. Overall, I wouldn't mind coming back for a pleasant meal with decent service, albeit a bit pricy. I enjoyed my time though and if craving Japanese food in the area, I'll be sure to return to try some of their other rolls and bowls! read more

A hidden gem in the big city of Boston! Calm and intimate sushi place right off Kenmore Square. It was such a delight coming here!! The servers are sweet and attentive and everyone is super friendly here. Very beautiful presentation of some of the most tasteful cuts of sushi I've had. The wagyu beef scallop just melts in your mouth, with the small hint of the juicy uni (sea urchin) on top to make it perfect. The scallop on the Ocean maki was delicious, and their nigiri was eaten so fast I barely got a photo! Definitely a higher-end price menu, so it's definitely a special event type place for me, but your tastebuds will thank you for this place! Worth every dollar spent here, especially for Boston. read more

I didn't know this spot replaced Fin's but it's a cute spot! Nicely decorated and fancy feel even though you can come casual. They play jazzy versions of normal radio songs. Servers were fast and cleaned the plates as you cleared them. The food is a bit on the pricier side but not too bad. I think it's a great spot to try. Chutoro, otoro, tako and hotate sushi: average! Grilled saba: a delicious appetizer! 9/10 Toro tartare: a small app but it was pretty good. 8/10 Crazy salmon maki: tasty but nothing special. A lot of sauce on it. Pretty aesthetic though. 8/10 Overall 8/10! read more

Made reservations for 6pm on a Saturday and got seated right away. My husband and I each got the Omakase Sushi set (15 pieces) and it was delicious. The fish is really fresh and the sushi rice is great. Nice atmosphere and will definitely come again. Parking can be tough but we got lucky and found meter parking nearby. read more
It's very cute inside. The staff are nice, we made a reservation and were seated immediately. The food was pretty good overall. The chawanmushi had too much truffle for me personally. Both the rolls were really good. The nagomi don was also really good. I enjoyed my dinner with a sparkling strawberry lemonade. If you care, they don't serve the food in order. They serve them as they are done. read more

While vacationing in the greater boston area we were craving sushi and a good soup. I took forever trying to find a place and we stumbled upon Nagomi. What a hidden gem! Amazing, super fresh, and fast service. The teriyaki ramen was so good and just what I needed after spending a lot of time out in the cold. My husband had the Spicy Maki, Kampachi and it was very fresh and delicious. A must try if you are in the area. read more
We've ordered takeout from here a good deal but only recently went in person. Right when you enter, there is a nice Japanese garden that creates a very homey and comfortable feeling. I do, however, recommend making reservations since when we arrived we were seated at the bar due to the tables already being reserved. I am not sure, but I think the menu we were given was different as well because of this. Still, we ordered the Spicy Combo and the Takoyaki. We had a big lunch so this was enough food, but we normally try to get the three roll spicy entree instead that comes with a spicy tuna, spicy salmon, and spicy yellowtail maki. The Spicy Combo was a pretty good alternative though! Takoyaki - this appetizer is one of our favorites at Nagomi. The takoyaki are really freshly made, and the exterior remains crispy while the interior is nice and gooey. The octopus inside is also much larger than other places we've had this dish, and the sauces are generous. Spicy Combo - this came with a miso soup and seaweed salad which helped fill us up. The actual sushi was 3 spicy salmon nigiri (with black fish eggs on top), 3 spicy tuna nigiri (also with the fish eggs on top), 4 pieces of spicy salmon maki, and 4 pieces of spicy tuna maki. The actual quality of the fish at Nagomi is really good, and it tasted extremely fresh. We'd definitely order this again. All in all, it is a bit pricey, but the atmosphere is really nice and the fish quality tastes very fresh. We saw a few people order rice bowls/dons and maybe chirashi, and those looked extremely vibrant and colorful. I'll definitely try one next time I go! read more
We were catching a concert at MGM on a very busy Friday and were lucky to find Nagomi Izakaya. We easily got a seat at 6pm and were placed at a beautiful table for two in a serene setting. My partner is operations manager at Brooklyn Kura sake brewery, so when my dad spotted their "Blue Door" on the menu among some other fine selections (BK's partner brewery Hakkaisan, Dasai), I was very pleased. We of course shared a bottle. My dad is an uni freak and fortunately Nagomi has a whole uni rice bowl on the menu. It did not disappoint. He is still talking about it. He got a whole box of fresh Japanese uni atop a bed of perfectly seasoned rice. In New York that would have run him at least $100 and here it was less than half that. I got the unavoidable Nagomi special don which was another rice bowl that had all the best things about planet earth atop. Truffle, caviar, ikura, toro, uni, fresh sashimi... I was in heaven. And again, with something that in NYC I wouldn't have batted an eye if I'd been charged $100 for it (I live there now, originally from NH, and I always knew Boston sushi was better...). I was full off my glorified chirashi bowl, but my dad was like a kid in a candy shop after the uni bowl and kept ordering his particular favorites that he can't get in NH - hamachi hand roll, futo maki, ika sushi ... and of course ice cream. He'd never had mochi before, so we ordered two mochi ice cream plates which came with three flavors. He's a convert now. And he's already trying to bring my mom back to this splendid find of a restaurant, tucked away just enough, but not too far at all from the other Fenway hullabaloo. Come for the sushi, obviously, but also come for the other Japanese specialties on the menu. read more

The tuna & toro don is soooo good! The toro just melts in your mouth. The sushi rice is also very yum. $30 very reasonable for this quality of fish and a big portion that I couldn't finish. Much better than Tora (another don place) imo! Nice, relaxed setting, not very crowded. read more

Nagomi Izakaya is a cute sushi restaurant by Kenmore station/BU area serving high quality specialty sushi. I had been here a year or two ago and had a wonderful experience but haven't returned since it is a bit pricey. I went around late dinner time the other day and was one of the few tables there which was surprising. They have $12 sake cocktails which is a pretty good price even though it isn't made with liquor. The yuzu marg, lychee martini, and yuzu rose martini were perfect cocktails (although not super strong). They have the best karaage so we got an order of that, the crispy rice, the mango tuna roll, and a shrimp tempura roll. The crispy rice was good but I have had better. The mango roll was the best roll and it tasted so fresh! I would say their speciality maki are probably the best and best value for nagomi since some of the pricier items like the crispy rice aren't totally worth it. If you come get the karaage and some of their speciality maki! The prices are a bit on the steep side especially given the location (kind of hole in the wall area by Kenmore) but the quality is excellent and it's a nice and clean atmosphere inside. read more
