We went to 311 to celebrate our anniversary, and it was worth every penny! The staff and owners were incredibly kind and thoughtful, and explained all 18 dishes. The restaurant was quiet and relaxing, and the food was absolutely delicious. We're very excited to go back!

I had the privilege of dining at Boston's first Michelin-starred restaurant on Christmas Eve, and the award is well-deserved. Each dish was carefully crafted and delicious, with kaiseki-style appetizers like crispy fried tilefish and Hokkaido hairy crab topped with jelly and foam. I was also thoroughly impressed by the table settings, with ceramics and tatami brought straight from Japan. Everything throughout this experience was beautifully thought out, and I am excited to see what's in store for 311 in 2026.

A phenomenal experience. I highly recommend this place. This is the only omaske I have ever had State side. I have only done this in Tokyo. The freshness of the seafood and the care to preparation is on par. What makes omaske great is the freshness of the seafood and the attention to detail. It is very expensive due to rent, shipping in products from Japan, preparation and training of staff, and lastly greed. This restaurant however isn't overcharging. They truly put effort into everything. Including the restroom. If you love sushi, I rececommend trying this place. If you don't, then pass. Most of the seafood is not cooked and the flavor isn't heavy. This was worth every cent of my student loan payment lol.

Located on Tremont on the lower level of a residential brownstone, On the Outside 311 is unassuming. You will probably walk past it without noticing it. On the inside, it offers dining for 10 guests in an intimate and upscale setting. I was told by the chef and owner that the menu is frequently changed based on what ingredients are in season. When we went (April 2025), the menu was 6 appetizers and 10 sushi courses, plus miso soup and dessert with tea. The sushi was definitely more of a traditional experience (especially compared to other omakases in the area at a similar price point-- think OYa). The appetizers stepped away from the traditional and got creative. A highlight was the Kegani dish. Crab, dash jelly, and tomato mousse was reminiscent of the best crab and cocktail sauce you've had. The sushi was some of the best I've had. The rice was perfectly seasoned. The balance of the warmth of the rice and fish was spot on. The chef is truly a master here. We opted to get the sake pairings. This turned out to be a choice well worth the price ($125). The pairings perfectly complemented the sushi. I don't know how to explain how perfect they were other than saying that the sake pairings were equally as impressive as the sushi. Cari, the chef's partner, put a lot of thought and work into selecting the perfect sake, and it was masterful! I've been to nearly every omakase in Boston. 311 is definitely in the top 3. It's hard to compare directly to others that aren't as traditional. But I think if you're looking for tradition, simple, perfectly crafted nigiri, 311 might be the best in Boston. We were served fish I've never had before, preparations I've never had before, and they were incredible. The chef, team, and especially Cari served us an incredible experience, and their hard work and dedication showed.

Great omakase experience! The service is super attentive and friendly, and I love talking to the chefs at the counter. It's a high end experience, with each dish explained to you. A great meal for a special occasion!

Came here for dinner last night, party of 2, for the 8:30pm seating. You have to make reservations ahead of time since they only seat 10 per seating time, with 2 seatings per night on evenings they're open. Online it says reservations open on the 15th of the month, but we luckily just happened to be looking and saw 8:30pm was available on Sunday! Feeling super blessed we got the chance to eat with chef Wei Chen (?). $250 per person not including the 14% fees at the end, we also ended up tipping an extra 4%. Pros: - EXCELLENT omakase experience - not only was the fish so fresh and tasty, but the presentation of every dish was so beautiful, including the plating - super nice relaxing ambiance - classical covers of animated movie soundtrack quietly in the background , quiet and peaceful but not SO quiet that you feel like you can't talk in a hushed tone. - fantastic service all around as you would expect from omakase - staff refill your waters and tea immediately, there's a hanger for your clothes behind your seat, and a basket for you to put your bags/purses. - super clean bathroom with amenities like lotion, mouthwash, tampons etc - the chef and all the workers were so kind and professional. - even fish you wouldn't think you would like is deliciously prepared. I usually don't love squid but this was delicious - my husband usually doesn't like uni but this was so good in his opinion - you won't leave hungry - it's an 18 course meal including dessert and 6 "appetizers" - my favorites were the uni shrimp noodle cold broth, the Chu toro nigiri, and the dish with the tomato paste. - the chefs presentation is like watching a calming show - the intentional and skillful knife work and plating is mesmerizing to watch - great location - super walkable from many hotels and train station - educational - the girl Carrie(?) was really good at explaining which parts of Japan certain ingredients came from, the chefs background, etc. I feel like I learned a lot and she gave us Boston recs for the rest of our trip as well. - they gave away abalone shells at the end of our meal which was so cute haha - they seat you in order of arrival and we got one of the middle seats with a great view of both chefs prepping Cons: - can be easy to miss the front door (so typical of omakase places lol)- make sure you don't miss the few steps to the sunken entrance - obviously pricey $$$. But honestly worth it to me - a once in a lifetime experience really with no bad ingredients ! Overall 10/10. I really like that they don't really put effort into marketing because it's truly a word of mouth (or internet lol) kind of place and doesn't dilute the quality of service and food. I tasted so many things for the first time (like anago saltwater eel, liver sauce on abalone, cheesecake pudding, etc). The preparation and ingredients felt more complex than some omakase we've done in SF and Seattle. Definitely hope I'll be back for a special occasion.

Chef Wei and Carrie were truly hospitable and informative. This may be our favorite omakase spot in Boston so far. The vibe is on point in terms of it being exclusive and intimate while the service is personalized and attentive. There were 18 well paced courses and you left feeling comfortably full. Presentation was on superb as well and Carrie made sure to add a special touch for my husband's birthday. A lot of Omakase in the area falls short in that the prices are outrageous and you leave feeling hungry and thinking the food could be better. Not here. We look forward to coming back again, the pictures speak for themselves!

The omakase here is 18 courses at around $320 pp after tax and tip. The head chef here used to work with Masa in NYC so i was very much looking forward to my experience here. The 18 courses consisted of 6 appetizers, 8 pieces of nigiri, 1 handroll, 1 tamago nirgiri, 1 miso soup, and 1 dessert. My personal favorite part of the dinner were the appetizers which took me back to Japan (not a lot of places can do this) and i loved that they had a Hokkaido Hairy Crab course! I also appreciated the chef's efforts to prioritize the natural characteristics of the fish without changing its original texture too much from the curing process nor adding a bunch of additional toppings and garnishing. Each bite of the fish felt very simple, clean, unique, and direct to my palette. If you're someone that prefers bolder slap in the face heavier flavors, this place is not for you (you can go to O Ya instead lol). While most of the fishes were directly flown in from the Toyosu Market in Japan, i did have an issue with a few of the the nigiris here as they were surprisingly fishy and not appetizing. I also was not the biggest fan of the sushi rice here as it had a unique subtle fragrant note to it which i didn't quite like. I probably won't come back here but i'm glad that i finally got the chance to give this place a try.

Amazing experience! It started off quiet but eventually the food starts coming out and they'll explain what you are eating. The ambience is so calming. All the bowls and plates and art, all is for Japan and hand/locally made there. I liked the low bar with the chefs up high and right in front of you. The service was great everyone was very polite and ready to help with any of your needs. It was an amazing tasting experience

This experience was a feast for the senses. From the moment you push the button to be welcomed, you are transported to another world, I only visit in my dreams. Our Host, Carrie and Chef Wei are masters of the orchestra, elegantly and seamlessly offering some of the best Japanese cuisine I've ever had. The service was relaxed, elegant and well paced. The care and consideration for every detail was evident. I would be difficult to choose a "favorite" but the appetizers were the showstopper for me. Every bite was a delight....especially the Hokkaido Hairy Crab...subtle and beautiful....it made me feel like Spring was around the corner; light and bright tomato foam with the essence of the sea from the crab, unreal! Also, do not shy away from the waitlist! We were invited same day....they had a cancellation and we were eager and ready. Overall value, you can't put a price on this. I've been to Nobu and others, but this was simply "special". I dream of going to Japan to immerse into the culture someday, this was dreamy and beautiful. I highly recommend.

Chef Wei and his team at 311 offered one of the best, most intimate dining experiences I've ever had. The restaurant offers two seating times, each allowing up to 10 patrons. I made reservations two months in advance for a special occasion. The decor was thoughtful, minimalistic, and traditional. Each seat is along the counter, so you can watch as dinner is prepared over the evening. Before each course, Carrie explained the dish and ingredients, making the meal especially interactive and informative. The appetizers were complex and unique, and the sushi courses were all delicious and unbelievably fresh. Although the full dining experience took just over two hours, we had such a great time that when we left, we were immediately thinking about when we could return next. They also recently got their liquor license and had an extensive menu of sake, beer, and wine. Hoping to visit again soon!

311 is the new hot Omakase in Boston. It's clear that the chef knows what they are doing and the restaurant looks amazing from the inside. It's slightly tricky to find but for that 2 hour tasting menu, it's just you and the staff and the outside world don't matter. Here are some of my thoughts: 1. The grill scallop is still one of my favorite hand rolls. 2. Tai Truffle from the appetizer might not need the truffle. 3. Kinki - the soup was perfect for a cold day and inspired me to make it at home. 4. Uni is wowwww and the cheesecake was better than 99% of the dessert place I had it. Can we get a bigger slice next time? 5. I appreciate the staff walking us though the good and chatting with us. 6. The sushi is good. Try it out.

YES!!!! Do yourself a favor, eat here. He had me at the first dish! I love how we get small dishes and sushi! This is one of Boston's best.

This is a 12 out of 10, and I don't just hand those ranking out willy-nilly. I came here through winters first, which is honestly the ideal origin story. The Spicy Hot Udon in Boston winter is the equivalent of someone putting a blanket on your shoulders without being asked. The broth hits deep, the udon has that perfect chew that tells you someone back there actually cares and respect their noodles, and you leave feeling genuinely restored rather than just full. Then summer came and I almost made the mistake of skipping it entirely--because soup in summer? I mean c'mon. But silly me, I should've tried the Spicy Cold Udon sooner than later. Same exceptional broth. Same gorgeous chewy noodles. But served cold in an absolutely refreshing way. I mourned all the summers I could have been eating this. Portions are generous, prices are reasonable, and the service moves at a pace that impresses you without making you feel like you're being processed; the atmosphere is nice and simple too. Anyway: hot or cold, winter or summer, just go, get some, sip some amazing broth, bask in all of it!

Those concerns disappeared almost immediately. Looking around the dining room, I noticed many of the customers were of Asian descent, which gave me confidence that I was in the right place. I grabbed a seat at the counter, and it ended up being the best seat in the house. Watching the cooks prepare each bowl from scratch was fascinating. They hand-cut the udon noodles, cooked every component to order, and assembled each bowl with incredible care. It felt like dinner and a show all in one. On a rainy Boston afternoon, the Spicy Hot Niku Udon with an onsen egg was exactly what I needed. The broth was deeply flavorful, with rich dried fish and beef notes that tasted comforting without being overwhelming. The thinly sliced beef was tender and perfectly cooked, while the freshly made udon noodles were the star of the bowl. They were silky, smooth, and wonderfully chewy. The tempura flakes added a satisfying salty crunch that contrasted nicely with the soft noodles. The star of the dish, onsen egg, stole the show. The white part had an almost custard-like texture and the yolk was rich and creamy, blending effortlessly into the broth to make every bite even more luxurious. My only suggestion would be to offer sliced jalapeños as an optional side garnish. As a Korean who grew up enjoying spicy foods, I found myself wanting just a little more heat. I understand that Japanese cuisine typically isn't as fiery, but having the option to add fresh jalapeños would have taken an already excellent bowl to the next level for my personal taste.

Not too much soup and the uni didn't completely obliterate when I stirred it up. They do use American wasabi though, and I found it superfluous to the dish and wished it was served on the side. But regardless, despite not having some extremely high quality noodles, the flavor and experience of the bowl itself was super pleasant. I ended up coming back the very next day because I wanted to try their clam soba. The clam soba only comes hot, which is a bit unfortunately because I actually think a cold clam soba with some lemon or yuzu would be phenomenol. I've been seeing recipes for it online so I've been wanting to try it, but their clam soba is a lot more standard and hot. They had a very good amount of clams in it, but I generally like their cold soba better. Still good, but didn't give me that feeling of needing to come back the very next day like I did with the ikura-uni combo. Overall, I'd still come back when I'm in downtown!

When I made the reservation online I put that the occasion it was for was my birthday- I notice that most restaurants don't pay attention to this on OpenTable, but Fuji definitely did! We were seated quickly and with no issue at all, despite it being pretty crowded. The vibe was intimate and classy- a great spot for date night, or for dinner with your parents. At our table was a card (in the pictures) which was such a nice touch and was a great start to the meal. Our waitress was awesome, and it seemed like there was a floor manager too that was making sure everyone was happy. It felt like the staff truly cared and wanted to make sure everyone was having a good time and experience. Our waitress checked in on us multiple times, and was very helpful with the menu. Speaking of the menu, I was very pleased to see the amount of vegetarian dishes! You don't see that often at Japanese restaurants! For our appetizers we got the lobster Rangoon and spicy edamame. Technically the tofu is an app but you would never guess that from the portion size. The edamame were outstanding! They were spicy as expected and were so tasty. We demolished the whole bowl. The Rangoons were also amazing- the chunks of lobster were divine. I myself love lobster and crab Rangoons, so a combo?! Amazing. Both the edamame and lobster Rangoons are can't misses. For our entrees/ mains we got the crispy soy noodles, miss Waldorf roll, sweet potato roll, tofu, and fried rice. The miss Waldorf roll is amazing, and I can not wait to go back and get more sushi. Truly the best sushi I have had in boston. There are other upscale sushi restaurants I have been to that charge a pretty penny but taste like grocery store sushi. Fuji is not one of those- it was truly exceptional sushi. The sweet potato roll was also delicious! I am very picky about my sweet potato rolls and had one that I have dreamt about since I had it in 2022. I have finally found a sweet potato roll that matches my standards. The crispy soy noodles were also amazing! They reminded e of one of my favorite restaurants when I was a kid and it filled me with such joy to eat something with that flavor. The serving size was pretty big too, and they were not shy on the shrimp! Note though, they were a tad oily (I added a little bit of soy sauce to balance it out). The fried rice was also very good and tasted like a good bowl of comfort fried rice. My parents ate it with the tofu and liked it! The only dish I would want some change in is the tofu- it wasn't bad but compared to the other dishes it definitely lacked the flavor punch you get in the rest of the dishes. The sauce was okay with it. After dinner our waitress brought a slice of vanilla crepe cake and ice cream! This was such a nice touch and it was SO good!!!!! It was the first time I ever had crepe cake but I loved it! I'm not sure if they have a dessert menu or not (we weren't asked if we wanted to see one) but I would love to go back and get that cake again! Overall I am beyond happy that I picked this spot for my birthday- I had an amazing experience and amazing food. Will definitely be back!

I came here for a solo dinner recently and it was a great spot! As it's a pretty popular spot,…read morethere was a line when I came. However, the hostess takes your order while you are in line so (1) the line moves quickly and (2) you get your order pretty quickly once seated. The interior is spacious and they have both tables and bar seating. Their menu is pretty straightforward: just a bunch of udon (but there's hot and cold options!). I got their famous spicy cold niku udon with an onsen egg and it was delicious. The portions were big, noodles were perfectly chewy, and the broth/sauce was great. Onsen egg was also cooked to perfection. I can definitely see the hype of this spot and would love to come back.

My Boston native friends recommended us try the OG spicy cold udon spot and I'm so happy I did!…read more - Spicy Hot Niku, (4.5/5): the soup! Omigosh sooo flavorful and umami. It had a nice deep savory chicken broth flavor and the spicy balanced it well. noodles were slightly cooked past my desired doneness but hard to avoid especially bc the soup was piping hot - Spicy Cold Niku, (5/5): love this!! Especially the udon doneness. Soooo extremely chewy and flavorful and great for a hot summers day. I recommend getting the egg so your noodles get coated spices and creamy yolk I heard they're opening up a location in NYC so definitely looking forward to that :^)
