Came here for a business lunch on a weekday and the place was virtually empty - not hard to get a table at all, but we did come with a reservation. Regardless, we were seated and serviced quickly. The space inside was nice and felt traditional - very wooden and warmly lit. Menu had a decent selection of sushi and other entrees; we got several things to share with each other. The soup was interesting as you had to add the miso yourself - felt nice and I liked how it was customizable. The fish itself was decent quality and plated well. Service was also great! I'm fairly particular when it comes to sushi--especially in an area saturated with high-quality options and at this price point. So, let's dive into the details! The food, first and foremost, tasted delicious. The cauliflower tempura was cooked quite perfectly, the sushi was fresh and presented quite aesthetically. The staff was attentive as well, and very kind and informative. My first critique would be the size of the sushi. The sushi/sashimi in the platter (as seen in one of the photos) were TINY. I have had sushi for two decades in Boston and these were the smallest pieces I've ever had. There was the smallest ball of rice underneath the nigiri, and as you can see the sashimi were little slivers of fish. It was disappointing for $56. Secondly, going along with the first, the prices of the dishes could not be justified. The portions were very small. I understand that you pay for experience, and this restaurant is lovely, but there are better options around this area. My sushi set was fresh and included a lot of the basic pieces like shrimp, tuna, salmon and yellowtail. My partner's sushi deluxe had all of my sushi pieces plus a few premium pieces like scallop and chutoro. The deluxe was probably a better deal in my opinion, especially with just a $10 difference between the sushi lunch and sushi deluxe. SERVICE: Friendly and attentive. Two words I can describe Blue Ribbon Sushi,... DELICIOUS & FRESH! We got the salmon tartare, three maki rolls, an assortment of sashimi including uni, toro, salmon, as well as hamachi, and lychee martinis! The Lychee martini was simply divine and they were not light handed when making it. All of the fish was super fresh! The rolls that they offer here are on the simpler side, however, they were made with perfection-- perfect amount of filling in one bite. Location wise, it was kind of tricky for us to find, as we got confused with the Brasserie right next door but we were able to locate it quickly. Our server was super kind, helpful, and attentive. Have dined here several times and the food and service have been consistently very good. They open at noon every day. We stopped in yesterday at 4pm- a snowy Saturday- and it was empty. Parking (3/5) - If you're driving to Blue Ribbon, parking is a challenge, as it is with most areas in Boston. With permit parking in the surrounding neighborhoods, you have to be very attentive to the signs in the neighborhood to ensure you're not in a permit-only parking zone. If you have the ability to take public transportation, the Kenmore exit on the Green line will put you directly next to Blue Ribbon, which is a big win! Reservations/Wait Time (4.8/5.0) - Reservations are definitely recommended, especially if you're planning to dine during the weekend. We were fortunate in the sense that we had no reservation on a Saturday night and still managed to get seated right away. We also arrived a little before 6 PM, which meant the restaurant was about 3/4 full and there were tables available. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Ambience (5/5) - great vibes in this spot. Dimly lit, great music and great decor gave it a high-end type vibe, but still mellow enough to enjoy a date night or casual dinner with friends.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Service (4.5/5) - Although we were seated in the back of the restaurant, we had good service. The server was very attentive and came by regularly to ensure we were being taken care of. Additional support came around to pick up dirty dishes quickly and even swapped out some of our plates and silverware with new, clean items, talk about attention to detail. Really, the one thing that stopped me from noting a 5/5 score was a minor detail that I noticed related to the service. I noticed that our server was very attentive to walk other tables through the menu, highlighting some of the key recommendations on the menu, while we did not get that same treatment. Food (4.8/5) - As avid sushi lovers who were spoiled with amazing sushi in the LA sushi scene, Blue Ribbon, I would say exemplifies what good sushi is meant to be. The fish quality was amazing! Portions were a bit smaller than we're used to, as it relates to most sushi spots. A roll consisted of 6 pieces consistently, while other places we've visited have provided 8 pieces. Not a big deal, however, certainly requires you to order more food if your intent is to get full during your meal. We ordered the miso soup, which is fantastic as the miso paste comes separate and allows you to create your own flavor. The spicy edamame which delicious and definitely ranked up there in spicy. We ordered a few pieces of fish from the special menu (amberjack belly and salmon belly) while ordering albacore and yellowtail from the main menu. All delicious, and the rolls we ordered were fantastic as well. We capped our meal with the crispy rice which is a great way to actually start your meal. Price (3/5) - granted, sushi prices have been going up across the board, but $9-10 for one piece of fish was a bit of sticker shock. Most places we've been to are charging $10-12 for two pieces of nigiri with the quality being somewhat similar. Our bill ended up being a little over $300 (tip included at 18%), and that included 2 sake glasses, 1 beer, a green tea, a miso soup, edamame, 9 pieces of nigiri sushi, 3 rolls, and the crispy rice. Overall Rating - 4.18 out of 5. The two big "P"s dropped the overall rating: parking and price. This score can be a bit higher if you decide to take the T vs driving in. I would say Blue Ribbon provides fantastic quality fish and a great ambiance; however, Boston offers plenty of other sushi spots that offer great fish for a much better price point. I would recommend Blue Ribbon for special occasions or if you're looking for a great spot to enjoy with friends. read more

It's super cute inside and has both table seating, bar seating, and sushi bae seating (which I thought was a nice touch). Wasn't too loud in there which was also a plus. Everything we got was great, but the best thing we had has to be the crispy rice. Perfectly crispy, the tuna was so smooth and flavorful; overall delicious! The service was also really good. My newest obsession. I had been once before but didn't get to try out a whole lot, but FINALLY got a chance to go with a big group and try out a lot of the menu items. We got the shishito peppers, the brussel sprouts, the wagyu dumplings, and the toro crispy rice, and the hamachi all of which were fantastic. I also ordered the sakana sanshu roll which was so simple but still fresh, spicy tuna roll with a twist. My favorite dish of all, though, was probably the salmon tartare. A lovely bowl of salmon with fix ins and seaweed chips. Also tried the cucumber gin cocktail (the Ginza) which was so incredibly refreshing with no real kick but still a good amount of gin. Our server was the sweetest! From making great recs (the sakana and the hamachi specifically), to chatting it up and bringing out a round of sake shots, we LOVED him! DISCLAIMER: This review might sound harsh or insane, but I think there's value in at least some of the criticisms listed. I take great care in critiquing dining experiences, especially those culturally adapted. Beautiful restaurant visually, but the atmosphere was tainted by loud country hits that rendered the mood inauthentic, unserious, and overly carefree. Whoever decided to blast country music during a sushi service should be relegated to bussing at a bar and grill or relieved of restaurant related duties entirely. The quality of the fish was overall mediocre. My maguro nigiri fell apart along the connective tissue lines, and the yellowtail felt a little sad and dry--likely a result of improper freezing or thawing or subpar freshness. The nigiri rice actually was very sensitive and fell apart easily. The salmon however was great, and the crispy rice was excellent as well. The miso soup used relatively high-quality miso that you stir in yourself, which I found to be a nice quirk. This might sound particular, but the metal spoon served with the miso soup clashes with traditional Japanese gastronomical values. In washoku, there's a longstanding preference for natural materials in utensils--wood, bamboo, and lacquerware--due to their harmony with the food and the cultural experience. For someone like me, who's passionate about authenticity, this choice felt off the mark. (Feel free to dismiss this if it sounds harsh, but I take sushi seriously--it's a delicate craft and one easily compromised when adapted without care.) At a price point of $38 for a 7-piece nigiri omakase and a 6-piece salmon maki, I'd expect something closer to 4 or even 5-star quality. Country music with sushi will always make you feel like what you're eating isn't worth your dollar. read more

Blue Ribbon is a fairly well-known establishment in LA, NY, Vegas, and now Boston. Loved my time and company here, but food was overrated in my opinion. You might want to check out the sushi restaurant next door for better value. Evidently, Blue Ribbon was empty whereas the sushi restaurant next door had long lines. Stacy, our waitress, on the other hand, was super kind and helpful! I appreciated her service. The interior was finished with wood. Simple, modern, and elegant. Great date spot! For appetizers, we each had miso soup (14) & the Yaki sea scallop with miso butter (16) which was tiny. One interesting thing with the miso soup was that you can customize it. And then came the sushi-sashimi combination (51) with Blue Ribbon roll (28) and otoro nigiri (36), which was also very underwhelming. I'm sure it was pricey but we weren't even full and the blue ribbon roll was actually disappointing in terms of taste. I didn't know lobster and caviar could ever be so tasteless. I may have inadvertently expected too much from the signature blue ribbon roll as it's named after the restaurant. Otoro was probably my favorite out of the entire meal, but you can't go wrong with toro! I wish I could recommend a standout signature dish from here, but sadly, I myself won't be returning for the food. read more

Service: We were greeted by Flynn who was fantastic and gave us a short list of recommendations after learning it was our first time there. He explained that the eel sauce used on some rolls did not include actual eel and this made my wife and I change our decision about a certain item I'll get to. Blue Ribbon is a fairly new restaurant in the sushi biz. The interior is very well decorated, dimly lit and comfortable. The sushi is à la carte which makes your bill very expensive, but the quality is unmatched. The otoro is extremely fresh and light, almost like they caught it straight from the ocean 10 minutes before. One thing that I always get is the shishito peppers. Their crisp is unmatched, perfectly salted with just the right amount of spice . The cocktails are interesting and creative. Most of them have Japanese elements with a twist. Delicious! I tried to place an order well before their listed closing time -- I was about to spend over $150 -- but no one answered the phone and they had already shut off Uber Eats delivery.
