    Hokkaido Butter Ramen
    KJ B.

Symphony Sushi remains a neighborhood staple. A perfect choice before attending a show at the nearby Huntington Theatre. My party found the food fresh and the servings generous. I don't eat pork and had beef and chicken options. I went with the beef dumpling soup and Crazy Maki. My friend found the pork belly bun scrumptious, but was so filling she couldn't quite finish her salmon sushi combo. The butter ramen topped with chashu pork, ordered by the third person in our party, found it rich and buttery... exactly as described. We went late afternoon, so while there was a robust take out business, we did not have to wait for table service. Our server was pleasant and well versed on the menu offerings. Dine in business picked up as we were leaving. Decor is simple Japanese motif. Temperature was comfortable. Space was clean.

Great service and super clean inside. They have great lunch deals and their fish is always super fresh.

    Shrimp and vegetable tempura

I've been to Symphony Sushi many times, and this one was a bit sub-par due to the server, who was slow and got an order wrong...twice. My friend and I arrived on time for our reservation (great addition, Symphony Sushi! Didn't used to take reservations) and ordered drinks and appetizers. I had my regular, shrimp and vegetable tempura, which was perfect--light and crispy coating on the outside, tasty on the inside. My friend's experience was a different story. Her appetizer was the Geisha Maki which she took great pains to order with the spicy sauce on the side. She explained it several times but apparently the server didn't get it because it came with the sauce, which my friend couldn't eat. The server reluctantly took it back and quite some time later returned it... with the wrong sauce withheld (there were two toppings). My friend wound up scraping it off. For her meal she ordered the Sushi Pizza, which she orders most times we go. After waiting some time she observed it ready to be delivered and after a bit she stood up to ask the server to pick it up, which she did. Symphony Sushi is usually a staple and as the closest full-service restaurant near Symphony Hall, a go-to before a performance. We will return but with some trepidation.

This is a great neighborhood spot. The sushi is so fresh and they have great lunch specials, even on Saturday. I always get the spicy salmon roll- best I've had- and the Alaskan roll. The service is friendly and quick and the space is clean. Will be back!

Fresh, generous sushi. I usually reserve, but I think not always necessary. Great for a meal before a play or the symphony.

This is a 12 out of 10, and I don't just hand those ranking out willy-nilly. I came here through winters first, which is honestly the ideal origin story. The Spicy Hot Udon in Boston winter is the equivalent of someone putting a blanket on your shoulders without being asked. The broth hits deep, the udon has that perfect chew that tells you someone back there actually cares and respect their noodles, and you leave feeling genuinely restored rather than just full. Then summer came and I almost made the mistake of skipping it entirely--because soup in summer? I mean c'mon. But silly me, I should've tried the Spicy Cold Udon sooner than later. Same exceptional broth. Same gorgeous chewy noodles. But served cold in an absolutely refreshing way. I mourned all the summers I could have been eating this. Portions are generous, prices are reasonable, and the service moves at a pace that impresses you without making you feel like you're being processed; the atmosphere is nice and simple too. Anyway: hot or cold, winter or summer, just go, get some, sip some amazing broth, bask in all of it!

I always worry that…read moretraditional flavors will be toned down to appeal to a broader audience, so I walked into Yume Ga Arukara with a little hesitation. Those concerns disappeared almost immediately. Looking around the dining room, I noticed many of the customers were of Asian descent, which gave me confidence that I was in the right place. I grabbed a seat at the counter, and it ended up being the best seat in the house. Watching the cooks prepare each bowl from scratch was fascinating. They hand-cut the udon noodles, cooked every component to order, and assembled each bowl with incredible care. It felt like dinner and a show all in one. On a rainy Boston afternoon, the Spicy Hot Niku Udon with an onsen egg was exactly what I needed. The broth was deeply flavorful, with rich dried fish and beef notes that tasted comforting without being overwhelming. The thinly sliced beef was tender and perfectly cooked, while the freshly made udon noodles were the star of the bowl. They were silky, smooth, and wonderfully chewy. The tempura flakes added a satisfying salty crunch that contrasted nicely with the soft noodles. The star of the dish, onsen egg, stole the show. The white part had an almost custard-like texture and the yolk was rich and creamy, blending effortlessly into the broth to make every bite even more luxurious. My only suggestion would be to offer sliced jalapeños as an optional side garnish. As a Korean who grew up enjoying spicy foods, I found myself wanting just a little more heat. I understand that Japanese cuisine typically isn't as fiery, but having the option to add fresh jalapeños would have taken an already excellent bowl to the next level for my personal taste.

The restaurant focuses mostly on soba or udon noodle dishes with a good selection between hot and cold options. It's not going to be the best udon or soba you've ever had. HOWEVER, I tried the cold ikura & uni cold soba and LOVED it. It's seasonal, so I tried that one out and was extremely surprised about how much I enjoyed the bowl. Not too much soup and the uni didn't completely obliterate when I stirred it up. They do use American wasabi though, and I found it superfluous to the dish and wished it was served on the side. But regardless, despite not having some extremely high quality noodles, the flavor and experience of the bowl itself was super pleasant. I ended up coming back the very next day because I wanted to try their clam soba. The clam soba only comes hot, which is a bit unfortunately because I actually think a cold clam soba with some lemon or yuzu would be phenomenol. I've been seeing recipes for it online so I've been wanting to try it, but their clam soba is a lot more standard and hot. They had a very good amount of clams in it, but I generally like their cold soba better. Still good, but didn't give me that feeling of needing to come back the very next day like I did with the ikura-uni combo. Overall, I'd still come back when I'm in downtown!

XO Seafood Udon: The restaurant specifically labeled it "wok-tossed," and it truly had a wonderful wok-hei鑊氣 (wok aroma), with an irresistible fragrance as soon as it arrived at the table. The XO sauce was extremely rich, sweet and umami, and the udon noodles were soft on the outside and bouncy on the inside; the sauce was glossy, smooth, but not greasy, allowing it to coat the noodles evenly and infuse them with flavor. The shrimp, squid, and scallops were all fresh and large, making for a very satisfying meal. The shrimp, in particular, were coated with a thin layer of starch before being pan-fried, adding layers of texture and locking in the juices. This plate removed the scallions and onions to suit my taste, and if you like spicy food, adding a little chili oil would greatly enhance the flavor. The restaurant had an elegant and refined ambiance, and the service was attentive, making it a very relaxing place.

When I made the reservation online I put that the occasion it was for was my birthday- I notice that most restaurants don't pay attention to this on OpenTable, but Fuji definitely did! We were seated quickly and with no issue at all, despite it being pretty crowded. The vibe was intimate and classy- a great spot for date night, or for dinner with your parents. At our table was a card (in the pictures) which was such a nice touch and was a great start to the meal. Our waitress was awesome, and it seemed like there was a floor manager too that was making sure everyone was happy. It felt like the staff truly cared and wanted to make sure everyone was having a good time and experience. Our waitress checked in on us multiple times, and was very helpful with the menu. Speaking of the menu, I was very pleased to see the amount of vegetarian dishes! You don't see that often at Japanese restaurants! For our appetizers we got the lobster Rangoon and spicy edamame. Technically the tofu is an app but you would never guess that from the portion size. The edamame were outstanding! They were spicy as expected and were so tasty. We demolished the whole bowl. The Rangoons were also amazing- the chunks of lobster were divine. I myself love lobster and crab Rangoons, so a combo?! Amazing. Both the edamame and lobster Rangoons are can't misses. For our entrees/ mains we got the crispy soy noodles, miss Waldorf roll, sweet potato roll, tofu, and fried rice. The miss Waldorf roll is amazing, and I can not wait to go back and get more sushi. Truly the best sushi I have had in boston. There are other upscale sushi restaurants I have been to that charge a pretty penny but taste like grocery store sushi. Fuji is not one of those- it was truly exceptional sushi. The sweet potato roll was also delicious! I am very picky about my sweet potato rolls and had one that I have dreamt about since I had it in 2022. I have finally found a sweet potato roll that matches my standards. The crispy soy noodles were also amazing! They reminded e of one of my favorite restaurants when I was a kid and it filled me with such joy to eat something with that flavor. The serving size was pretty big too, and they were not shy on the shrimp! Note though, they were a tad oily (I added a little bit of soy sauce to balance it out). The fried rice was also very good and tasted like a good bowl of comfort fried rice. My parents ate it with the tofu and liked it! The only dish I would want some change in is the tofu- it wasn't bad but compared to the other dishes it definitely lacked the flavor punch you get in the rest of the dishes. The sauce was okay with it. After dinner our waitress brought a slice of vanilla crepe cake and ice cream! This was such a nice touch and it was SO good!!!!! It was the first time I ever had crepe cake but I loved it! I'm not sure if they have a dessert menu or not (we weren't asked if we wanted to see one) but I would love to go back and get that cake again! Overall I am beyond happy that I picked this spot for my birthday- I had an amazing experience and amazing food. Will definitely be back!
